So about 9 months ago, I donated a 150 slot ventrilo server for the TL community to use (news post)
Previously it was used primarily by the TL DotA and EVE players, but with the various TL events and sc2 beta coming out, I was happy to see more SC/SC2 players use it as well. Even with the new influx of people using the vent, it's still being severely underutilized, so I'm posting this to make sure everyone knows about it.
Hostname: chromium.typefrag.com Port: 11005
This vent is open to anyone from the TL community, and private/passworded channels for clans/teams/etc for even non sc/sc2 related games can be requested as well. Please don't PM me directly with requests, but I'll be glad to help you out if you catch me on vent.
Please use the thread in Website Feedback: TL Ventrilo Thread for any channel requests and issues.

I've been considering moving from ventrilo to mumble for obvious reasons, but don't know of any reliable hosting companies out there that have good support. If anyone knows of any, please let me know.

No reason why you cant switch over to a mumble client as well It has much better latency and cool features like ingame overlays (can see who is talking), create temporary channels that delete when all users log off, etc. And most importantly, it's easier to manage from an admin point of view. I believe it also has better compatibility across all platforms/OS's.

Wow never knew of this, ill definitely check it out

I have no idea why I keep putting this off. :\

The vent is especially helpful for organizing things while chat rooms aren't easily available on bnet 2.0 so TYVM.

Vent is awesome, thanks again Mango

yeah thanks, I remember they announced this and said an anonymous person donated it. Good to find out who it was.
As for mumble, I don't know the benefits, but if you changed over I would go and have my friends get it too.
Thanks from RoLClub USA.

I'll try and stop by from time to time.

Didnt know this, cool!

I 2v2 a lot with an irl friend of mine, but we don't live under the same roof. We used to skype, but it was too unreliable with SC running at the same time. A few months we switched to ventrillo, thanks t you Mango, and it works so smoothly now!

Ventrilo unfortunately have some major issues with Windows 7 and some soundcards, they haven't really bothered to fix it either so more and more are switching to other alternatives.

I also didn't know about this. Super neat!

Apoplexy Industries hosts mumble servers for about $1 for every 5 slots per month and apparently occasionally give 5 slots for free (the guy that runs AI gaming told me when I was playing TF2 with him). My TF2 team rents a 40 slot and we've never had any issues with it; AI's support is notorious among FPS gamers for being great. Just letting you know since you were interested in looking for a host. Mumble is a great piece of software and really is better than Vent in more ways than I can mention.

I am looking into alternatives like mumble and teamspeak 3, mainly due to being able to effectively admin a server with this many users. However, for its simplicity and widespread use, ventrilo seems like the best choice for now. Also, I'm sure someone will eventually release some kind of workaround or patch to resolved the windows 7 issues.
R1CH, being the wizard he is, actually solved the main issue of dealing with vent spammers, so for the near future, I don't think I'll switch. I may setup a smaller TS3 server (<50 slots) to test stuff out with sometime this month... once it's up, I'll let you guys know.

Super low latency alternatives like mumble is almost a must for fps teams, but I dont think its as critical to a userbase like tl.net. Need something that is both user friendly to setup/use, and easy to manage... mumble seems lacking in that respect compared to ts3 or even ventrilo.

after switching to mumble some months ago for qw, i just can't stand ventrilo :-o.

I just discovered this, and it's awesome!
I've been playing some games though, and we're having some problems with latency. The guy I'm playing with can always hear me just fine, but sooner or later (usually within 45 seconds) I can see his speaker light up but I don't hear anything. If I disconnect from ventrilo or wait a few minutes, I'll eventually be treated to everything he said during during that period in one big tirade with no cuts.
Any ideas what's going on? It's pretty frustrating

This is a common problem with Vent and windows 7 (most commonly), they are working on a patch for it and there are a few things to TRY and work around it but most havent worked for me. a simple google search for 'vent lag windows 7' will show you some things to try.

didnt know about this...thank you
