banner courtesy kennigit, terrible times have been hard for newbies in the starcraft scene, especially newbies to the big bad teamliquid site where we ban people for no good reason, at all! and the contests, oh god the contests are impossible and so cruel!
the intrigue Beta Key Scholarship (lol) seeks to reward new posters with lots of potential who have made quality posts to the best of their ability, helping them actualize and become successful nerds and nerdettes. these are people that already try their best, instead of saying 'plz give me a key, i'll contribute i promise!' like everyone else.
i will be giving these out as i see deserving candidates - you don't need to come up with crazy stuff, even consistently good and thoughtful posting is enough! nominations welcome for other people, please include links. if you are shameless enough to nominate yourself despite my explicit bolded instructions, you are probably going to be banned.
here is a giveaway where hopefully you can feel good even if you don't win =]
winners: 04/20/10: Aether
for his unreal mindfuck research on mining at gold patches. the fact that misplaced ccs can mine at least as well as properly placed ones, and likely even faster is interesting and simply brilliant! this kid registered yesterday, lmfao isn't that sick 04/20/10: Klapdout
this next guy has been with us for a bit, but hasn't been active regularly until recently, with the starcraft 2 beta out. since then he's had quality posts everywhere, but most noticeably in tech threads helping out other people. you can see our hero in action here, here, here, and/or here if you actually care. lately he's been running bad on luck in beta key drawings and is either too slow or too stupid to win any contests. no worries! have fun buddy! 04/20/10: TossFloss
04/21/10: dudeman001, Z3kk
i know even 'contests' like this one seem out of reach, due to our first three winners being just hilariously awesome. today's winners should be much easier for many of you to relate to: they don't have a single significant thread for me to link, but have had exemplary posting overall despite failing to win keys over and over. being able to maintain class and good humor after discouraging results is really admirable. have fun guys. 04/23/10: Golden Ghost
what a good fucking poster, damn. been around for a long time (knows his stuff about the old, old old school brood war scene), only very recently started posting and i'm really glad he did. can you believe he hasn't made a single post about not having a key? this just makes me look harder, there is no way guys like this should be left behind haha 04/23/10: Housemd
good poster. can i stop writing these? everyone gets the gist by now LOL 04/24/10: DefMatrixUltra

you could be next!

this is difficult since most of the quality posters in the sc2 Strat forums are quality because they already have a key.
or can it be just quality posts in general?
EDIT: nvm i read the OP more thoroughly

I second Chill's nomination. Not Kennegit's though. Nah awesome idea, glad to see people getting a chance at keys!

Congratulations aether! A well deserved key for an amazing discovery.
|
Congrats Aether! Great math you did there, it is always fun to see stats used effectively.
|
Just one question is it the same Aether that used to play wc3 as ud ´back in the oldschool days? anyone knows
|
It's pretty hard to find new stuff when you don't have a key ;(. Unless it doesnt have to be sc2 related.
|
Nice Aether! I also like this idea! I don't usually have much to contribute besides finding posts that have been done before and linking in that post to related topics.
|
Congrats Aether! I hadn't seen that post but it is really a mind-blower. WOW!
Also, I just wanna say I really like the idea of encouraging constructive positive scholarship/research with beta key rewards. I think the TL mods are doing great job of finding interesting ways of rewarding different people for different reasons in the community and I really really like that.
|
Very nice, congrats to Aether. This scolarship for new users is very good but what about old school users ? Cheers.
|
this is hard as hell T_T
can't think of any good NEW posters who dont already have a key.
|
Good luck to those who gain the scholarship.
|
Nice! Thanks for looking out for us newbies in the sc scene.
|
Did you catch my post on..oh. nm.
|
i'll nominte ares[effort] for this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=89128
i really like his replays and interviews and such. sure its not as original and creative as applying math to SC, but he does requests and is a nice guy if u talk to him (although i have only done it like twice)
never seen him get appreciated as much as he deserves so that is my justification.
|
I think there are many of you people that write in the forum that already have a beta key. so there is impossible to get a beta key, but i realy need one all of my friend and all im my clan have, and im still waiting for a beta invite. please liquid give me one.

But now there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, if we work hard enough. Very nice.

what's the cutoff for "new?"
|
|
thats cool aether, i admit i read your post before and just ignored it assuming it was just another noob posting about something that's already been discussed before. i also saw some posts there that indicated a similar assumption. i think that's definitely a good lesson for me to pay attention more instead of blindly assuming things

Sadly, that's not the case. If you look here http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=119864 this breaks down the forums make-up of players with and without a key. Granted, I'm sure there's lots of new users simply because TL started giving out keys which would inflate the numbers, but still.

I'm a pretty quiet guy, but I need one. Not that I've done anything to deserve one, but I guess I'll have to try.

I doubt you'll get one if you can't even take the time to read the post..
|
I guess you're assuming I'm saying "plz give me a key, i'll contribute i promise!" I'm not. I just posted harmlessly.
|
This is a great idea to lend additional incentive to create great posts! Good luck to everybody and may the brilliance of each new thread bloom like a million rutabagas.
|
I too was wondering what the cut-off is for "new posters"?
EDIT: also, don't you think it will be difficult for those of us who don't have a beta key to contribute because of the knowledge differential?
|
I'd like to nominate indecisivepenguin for a possible scholarship. He seems like a really genuine guy and I think he would be very gracious if you even just considered him. Congrats Aether on getting a key!

He did mention good and/or thoughtful posts, as well. I don't have a key and have just indulged myself in SC2 videos, mainly Husky and HDstarcraft's youtube channels, not to mention various other posts here on the forum itself. I feel the key here is to at least try to contribute to the community and help out, and not just say "giev ky plz" and then bounce once you've gotten a key.

i dont kno anyone particular in teamliquid so i m not sure who would i nominate but i think the people who deserve the key the most would be the contestants who tried to get a beta key from contest that have been happening. they should be rewarded for their hardwork. i <3 TL i m glad u guys are getting recognized by blizzard u guys keep it up love the scavange hunt!

Nice! Goes to show you if you are a quality poster you WILL be recognized and appreciated.
More beta giveaways should be like this and less about random pointless contests. True quality gets rewarded here not random gimmick.

Congratulations to Aether and Klapdout.

Pretty sweet contest. A good way to make sure people contribute with useful thoughtful posts that helps the community.
I will have no chance of gaining a key this way XD I screw around too much, too goofy
|
I have a huuuge insight to something very, very, very uninteresting and not at all important!
I don't have talents like this either.. so uhm.. I'm gonna try to win a beta key by... ah maybe... no. I'm usually good with figuring out cost efficiencies vs damage output and fiering speed of units in RTS games... but seeing as I don't have a key, I dont really have a good concept of it all, so that's not an option.. hmm... Don't suppose anyone need a morale boost or something? I can do that... :p Oh, I can stand on one foot for really long.. I haven't actually meansured... get bored, you know. >.<
Seriously though... I think most things are already covered by those that are really into the game already and commentating/playing really good... Although not to put the OP down for this "contest" or anything! There surely is alot of things to talk about that is considered good info and insight, still.
Maybe something to talk about would be the learning curve of SC2 vs SC/BW. Alot of control and mental capabilities is needed as well as a degree of good finger dexterity is also nessesary, to be a good player. SC2 is more tactical a game than SC1 was IMO.. because of the bonus damages added, you have direct, hard counters in SC2 that didn't exist in SC1. (I like that concept ALOT) However, for a newbie to get good at SC2, from scratch... there's really only one way: PLAY GAMES... lots of games! Over and over again until your fingers are getting it by themselves, you start to get faster and faster at doing what's needed. Also, take small time-out minutes sometimes, to think about what you're doing and what should be improved in your strategy. Watch your replays, analyze and do ask people about counters and such to get a better knowledge and playstyle. Do NOT go cheesing in every game just to win... you get alot better at the game if you try to get a solid Macro and evolve it to counter the enemies unit compositions..... I could elaborate alot more on this subject but... oh jeez... did I just write all that...? I'm sorry.. >.< textwall... *rollseyes*
Anyway, cheers to teamliquid for all they do for the SC2 community! (Feel free to move the texwall to another forum if you find it useful)

I nominate Lordwierd for this! I also do not understand that there are any rules aside from no self-nominating.

Thanks, but i think Cheree deserves this nomination more than me or IndecisivePenguin. Being able to neutrally glue the Self-Nominators famous (or infamous) thread, by presenting argumentative and cool responses to all hotheaded folk in that thread. As being newcomer myself, sort of soothing support that Cheree provided there, was really nice. So before, if ever, considering me, please first consider Cheree for getting a beta key. He kinda participated in the Self-nominators thread more actively than most ppl, while not being on the list himself. I really wish he gets attention he deserves.

I visited that "list of banned people" you posted. It's actually quite fun to read. I was giggling here and there about the reasons, especially the "I have my reasons". It sounds so much like an assassin justifying his kill ^_^
Anyway, I have a hard time remembering the names of the posters, but I would say anyone with not a retarded name. If there's one thing that irks me is the lack of creativity in some names. So I cast my vote to Miklotov.
Also, grammar check, is it alright to say "I just read a book"?

Here's an idea, KEYS FOR WOUNDED VETS! We've been at war a long time and many soldiers are returning home disabled,no thanks to IED's. I'm sure many are going stir crazy not being able to enjoy the activities they used to. I used to be in the army and I know for a fact that the military is full of RTS gamers (Lot of command and conquer players and bw) I would like to nominate all of them for keys! Ah, you guys are really great. He just seems like a great guy, really. Cheree, he caused quite a stir in that thread, but I know he was just trying to look after the newer posters as best he could. He empathizes with them, and it's tough to stand for what you think in an atmosphere like that. He wasn't very popular with the crowd, but I have to respect his courage. I would second jhNz's nomination if he were a new poster. Him and Blind, definitely. I figured I would get some questions about this, but no that's not me. I've never played any RTS games competitively, and all of my starcraft knowledge basically comes from playing v-tec paintball use map settings games on the old SC1. I did play a game called Day of Defeat competitively, but the community was pretty small so not much money to be had. I played for United5 and rSports in that game where we managed to take second place at WSVG before the game basically died.
Again thanks so much for this key. AHHH! So awesome!

Yes affirmative action should be given to females so we can solve the discrepancy for the gender ratio in starcraft. This way there will one day be more female gamers or at least more starcraft gamers.

i unblocked TL at my workplace, just so i could read the site from the office, and inmmediately wrote about it on my blog. That's gotta count for sommthing, right?.... right?! (plz got make it count for something)

I nominate the hell out of TossFloss, the creator of this thread:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=116789
which meticulously details the comparative, mathematical advantages of obtaining upgrades. I'm really surprised all no other stat-lovers, I know there are plenty out there aren't paying more attention to this.
whoops, I didn't catch the OP update. Well... TossFloss absolutely deserves that key.

I nominate The_australian, great poster has organised a few TL Melbourne get togethers and deserves it due to him being the best zerg in aus.

I support giving Beta keys to new members who show high quality posts and a lot of potential. Let's just hope they don't stop posting good stuff after receiving the keys though

Well I think it will be hard for 'em to tear themselves away from SC2 to even have time to post, at least for the first few days hehe.

Hehe. I see what you did there.
I think this is really cool. I myself is hoping to get a key tomorrow in the liquipedia beta key contest

Whoa! This is the greatest gift I've received in a long time! :D Probably the first gift from (almost ^3^) total strangers! Thanks so much for the nomination XD! As dudeman just stated, I'll try my best to figure out the magic that is StarCraft II, and maybe reveal all I know about it! Thanks so much!
And yes, I happen to have noticed as well that I've ended every sentence with an exclamation point!! I should totally drop the insignificant little games I dabble in and devote my fun time to StarCraft!! Good luck to everyone who's still trying for one!!!

I'm sure that you will do excellent work in the field of Starcraft 2, and hopefully we hear more from you. GL and HF!!!

I'm finding myself only entering the random draws because I'm so lost when it comes to the trivia, scavenger hunt etc. contests. Have to keep my spirits high if I'm going to win a key
I'll keep my eye out for good posters to nominate.

I'm really excited I got a key. I never expected it and I had to read the message from Intrigue several times to take it in. So Intrigue thanks a lot. I guess now I HAVE to keep posting on what I can as best as I can
|
This is me right now knowing that I'll never get the opportunity to play in the beta because I'm neither a fast uber googler for the scavenger hunts, or a good contributor like the people that one the keys in this thread.
Good luck to everyone getting a key

I'm RoarK. I recently ran this thread\contest to give-away one of my own keys. I saw this thread and thought it might be a great way to help get more people into this awesome beta by nominating:
Axonn
He made several very helpful and insightful posts regarding how I should structure the contest to make it fair and worthwhile to all who entered.
Though he is young and new to TL you can see in the thread that his post are helpful and beneficial to the concept of community that TL.net strives for.
Below is his post and why I chose to nominate him:
+ Show Spoiler +On April 23 2010 04:32 roark wrote: I'm not entirely sure on the random number thing myself. My thought was to do one of two things:
1. Start a new thread. Leave that thread open for a period of time, say 3 hours. Then generate a number between 1 and the last post. The random number will correlate to a post # "x". Whoever was the "x" poster will winn.
2. Allow everyone to choose a number, between a certain number range. Ex: 1-1000. Generate the number. Winner is the poster closest to the # generated.
NOTE: Added to OP. If you are going to do the 1st option people will post multiple times and it will be un-trackable or a bunch of work-for-nothing. But if you choose the second (or even first!) don't do it at like 03:00 CET when all fellow Europeans like myself are sleeping (not including hard core dudes). So you may try to randomize it by selecting an accidental post in this thread or even simplier just find someone here you'd like to give a key by any criterion you want. No one can call any of this "unfair" because giving your additional key is fair enough!

I am super happy to have gotten a beta key.
But I am even happier to think that somewhere out there, someone on TL thinks that some of my posts were worth something.
I've never been a high-level SC player. My games (Quake-style FPS) have come and gone from the spotlight (both in games media and in my life personally). But SC is this irresistible concept that I cannot escape from. I think about it constantly. I think about the life-lessons held within the mechanics of this game. The lessons about decision-making, about how timing is crucial (one lesson that is especially hard to learn), about adaptation (and when not to go too far) - and so many others.
Whenever I think of Starcraft, I think of the legendary figures, moments, and events of its history. And TL is the place that ties those three things together for me - it's a place that remembers those things along with me.
I've never been a high-level SC player. But I hope to god I can do something to make this game as incredible as the first. I will do my best in the beta to ensure the success of this game and to ensure that it has a positive outcome with regards to passionate people like Day[9] and skillful masters of the "Starcraft concept" like Nony.
Thank you, TL, for being awesome.
|
|
On a second note why would you give out keys to those who dont deserve it? The ones that do deserve it, the real sc fans, would contribute much more. After all it is called BETA for a reason, more expirienced gamers can test it and balance it so it comes out as a more enjoyable and complete game to the public.

i nominate the guy who made the Leta article if he didnt get a key yet

well ive played since sc1/broodwar, then as people were moving onto wc3 reign of choas, then tft i followed was in 4K for short amount of time with bond, then came WoW oh my slight addiction to that, then got bored again xD as friends kept leaving for different paths. now back druling over sc2... =( and the elusive key/competions keep sliping from my fingers. but im patient!
nominate skippy2591 seems to have posted something interesting about burrow & forcefields, maybe some "gosu strategist" can put into prospective.

would someone please look at nominateing me. i don't have a key but do have plenty of knowlage from comintaries, live feeds, hacked versions of the AI, freinds who won't share their key(probally for a good reason though none is ever given), the map editor copy i got off a freind, and these fourms. if you would like links to some of the treads i have posted in, just ask or scan for some of the treads that i was the last to post in.

I have no-one to nominate, just wanted to say that this is a great initiative. When i gave away my extra beta key (pat on the back) i tried to do the same, but it was so hard since not even all the star-people had one then. The contributors should get something back!
And on the subject: does anyone in the staff get any pay for what they are doing? was thinking about this the other day; there is allmost no advertising on this site(which is great) - but couldnt you get like a sponsor so that the staff would get a few extra bucks a month or so?

is this thread dead? are there any more keys?bump
