UPDATE 2010-07-21Interview with QXC We are doing a series of "Interview With The Pros" over the next week where we get to know some of the pros on a more personal level and hear their current thoughts on starcraft while having fun.
This is our first interview ever with qxc, so we had issues for the first few minutes with ventrilo clicks and delayed conversations leading us to step on each other, but it smoothed out later. + Show Spoiler +

----------------------------------------
Hey everyone! This is Kitty and Krytos here. (EDIT: We are a commentators/tips duo, read below for more details) We are very new commentators to the esports scene, but we really do believe in the esports movement and want to help bring more attention to it in America by adding more diversity to the commentators already out there. Day9, Husky, HD, and others are all great. They have their unique styles, which is great because some will love Day9's strong analysis, whereas others might just enjoy Husky's energy and goofiness in his videos.
Either way, we believe that at a buffet, people should have a nice selection to pick and choose from, and we want to be a part of that selection. We know we are not the best (still improving with each video), however this is a fun hobby for us and believe we can help bring content to the community that is worthwhile in the form of our commentary and tips for beginners.
If we're not your cup of tea, that is fine and understandable. No need to support us, but please do support other commentators because the more attention esports gets, the more serious it becomes and can grow.
We plan to stay dedicated to providing VODs regularly to the community because we also feel that everyone can benefit from the content, explanations, and overall entertainment value of watching these games.
Note: we read the other thread about self-promoters very carefully, and after talking to some of the mods, we think that we will be providing good content for everyone and the sc2 community. Go esports!! =)
Edit: we should point out that the videos of us talking in front of the camera is using my very poopy canon camera. Other videos with commentary/tips are done with a Blue Snowball mic. We believe that mic is good enough, but if people still feel that the quality of the mics in the commentary/tips is not good enough, please let us know if there are better ones than the Blue Snowball for a reasonable price.
Also, we should point out that right now Kitty is very new to the RTS scene, but still dedicated to picking up the game more and doing more commentaries with Krytos down the line. Krytos is more experienced and thus jumping straight into commentaries. We plan to evolve quite a bit over the course of months/years. So expect to see improvements over time! =)
Good luck with ur channel u seem really consistent.
Personally im not a big fan of female commentary, personal preference i guess. But keep on bringing out videos and im sure ull keep ur subscriber count growing.
Good to see other people taking an interest in doing this. The one thing I can strongly suggest is to not only focus on your ability to commentate; but your game knowledge as well. Make sure you have a strong fundamental understanding of the trends in builds, what certain actions made by players mean, etc. All too often I hear commentators state complete misinformation about player's intentions despite it being painfully obvious what they intend.
Buy a new microphone please and ill give you a second chance.
Edit: also, i gave your first video a second chance.... it sounds to me like your just talking for the sake of talking talking about the stalker and its sheilds you just walk around in circles very very pointless commentary...also i didnt hear any girls voices but... i guess i didnt watch it all...
try not to watch the game before you commentate them. I know its hard sometimes but it really affects the way you speak. the game I watched you had clairvoyant powers.
also TL is brutal with complaints so you better be prepared. cleavage won't save you.

Some people prefer Klazart, some people prefer Chill.
Although I definitely agree game knowledge is the most important part about commentating, some people are looking more for the enthusiasm and the enjoyment in it. Specifically bronze players.
The only way to become a good commentator in my opinion is be good at what you are commentating at.
Watched your TLOvsWhitera game, One thing i would like to mention, is dont bother speculating if it's the 'real' TLO or 'real' whitera. All you gotta do is look at the apm, 150 ish and they're legit. why commentate a game if you dont believe it to be the legit players?
On July 14 2010 02:47 SCC-Faust wrote: Although I definitely agree game knowledge is the most important part about commentating, some people are looking more for the enthusiasm and the enjoyment in it. Specifically bronze players.
I agree 100% that enthusiasm and a general feel of enjoyment is absolutely essential to great commentary. However, even in the eyes on a bronze league player, a commentator loses credibility if they consistently state what is going to happen only to have it be completely wrong. A lot of lower level players look up to the commentators to relay accurate information to them so that they can better learn from the games they are watching.
Even if there is a big lack of femininity in the playing and commentating of StarCraft, i would prefere a more strict look, muck like HD. Even if Day[9] is a nice and chill way to make up in the morning, with no need to even put on your cloths, it feels good to see professional.
I often prefere a womans voice, but in GomTV, i can't remember her name, but they had a female commentator for a short while. Perfect eyecandy, but she didn't contribute to the commentating. So i would love to see a professional, clever female commentator. Cleavage isn't all, SUIT UP!
First, about logo since you asked in a video. Put some kind of borders to it, so we can better see it's not part of the game.
Watched couple videos, so I could give some feedback for you.
There's so much SC2 content available all over the web, so you need to attract people to watch your videos. You have a lot of videos of matches that are not tied to anything or title does not give hint what it will present, so there's no incentive or hook to watch some random game.
One obvious way to make a match more meaningful is to have some kind of incentive to win, every tournament match have incentive to win and are often more meaningful to spectator that basic ladder match.
Another option would be coherent in naming of games, bunching them into series and have some sort of general viewpoint in every series. Example: Day[9] Daily has random replays in his show, but his bread and butter is to concentrate on analysis of the game. Another example could be your own Basic Starcraft with Kitty. Right away when I read the video named "Basic Starcraft With Kitty! #1 - Hellion Harass" I knew what to expect. However, when you have video like "PvT - WhiteRa vs TheLittleOne - Game 1" there's no way to tell if this match is interesting or not, if it's play-to-play commentated, analysed or what are the stakes in this match.
Also, your introduction in this thread made me understand that you cast as a duo. But I didn't find videos where you would do commentating together. Maybe it was my misunderstanding.
In summary, I'd like to see more focus on specific viewpoint and somehow communicate it to spectators as well as organizing videos in a way that this focus will be clear (part of the communication).
I'm losing my own focus now so I better stop before I talk more nonsense. By the way, check my siggy, it might interest you.
Hi everyone, thanks again for the support. As mentioned in the edited post above, right now Krytos and Kitty are split into two segments for the VODs. Kitty is sticking to basic SC w/ kitty while she smooths out her speaking skills and gains more knowledge of the game. Krytos also has alot more stamina for cranking out hours of VODs on end =P Down the road, Kitty and Krytos will recombine efforts to doing more commentaries together. We forgot to post it as "Commentator/Tips Duo", but the thread has already been made lol
Since you will eventually combine your forces, you might want to think through your interaction between each other. Caster duos always have two distinct roles that complement each other. But you probably know this already.
I know this is Internet and people have to act like the stereotypical male Internet user but can we NOT comment on her cleavege in every post? (Exaggeration, I know) I'm just happy about the fact that we have some female commentator for a change. I look forward on seeing more stuff from you I hope the girl gets more courage to commentate as these become more frequent, she was kinda silent for a duo.
Ill check it out. I always feel sorry for the girls getting into something like this for reasons you can already see in this thread. I hope you are able to ignore stuff like that and keep going. Thats the best way to make them stop anyways. Good luck
Gender of the commentator/player/whatever shouldn't be an issue. Whoever can perform the role at a satisfactory level should do it, regardless of gender.
This team will be a really good thing, assuming all things go well.

Watched 2 and a half games. It seems like only the guy talks and kitty doesnt add anything of substance to the commentary. Its nice to see a girl commentator as even a change in voice can add a dynamic mix. However, it seems like the girl is there to be just a gimmick to attract viewers. It would be nice to have more females be involved in the community but they should be knowledgeable about the game and not there to take advantage of testosterone full gamers.

u might be right, but we like seeing girls. they r just better looking and sounding than guys no offense guys.
but there could be trouble if kitty is really popular because then the next commentators will be 2 girls, and then 3, and soon we will have only girl commentators. it's a slippers elope.

I facepalmed when I read this. The whole thread had some fairly useful feedback, then this came along.
Back on topic, they're new. As already mentioned before. Practice makes perfect guys, I look forward to seeing more commentaries from you two.
My feedback has already been posted but I feel it's one that needs a little encouragment: Don't watch replays before you commentate them. Like any sports caster, they can't watch the games before hand.
With that being said, (like I said before) it's just practice now more than anything else.
hey been a fan of your work since u started as u know
and I can vouch for the effort they are putting into this, from watching their first and last video u can just notice an amazing difference in commentating which they have developed over a very short while, so this can only get better
You can tell alot about a community by the way it treats its' female members...
..I could seriously do without all the cleavage comments.
At first I was interested by the OP's sales pitch all about diversity in commentating. He's absolutely right, it's nice to see different styles of commentating. However, I didn't whatsoever feel KK offered anything new or different. HD and Husky already have lame jokes covered.
tbh, im enjoying the commentaries quite a bit, but just cus theres a girl involved doesnt mean that puns and cutesy things have to be tossed around, i would enjoy it immensely more if it was 2 serious ppl discussing starcraft, not 1 starcraft guy and 1 starcraft girl with emphasis on the girl.
i want to talk directly to kitty but i feel weird doing it when its a shared account "kittyy"

lol, we are consolidating our accounts to everything KKstarcraft. We asked the mods to change the username to KKstacraft eventually. Besides, why deny others the chance to hit on krytos? he could use some loving too =P
----
yes, we are new, and we are still slowly making ourselves stand out as something different. Depending on your perspective, we might look like carbon copies of XYZ, we might look like lame noobs, etc. but either way, we feel it's too early to tell exactly how we will pan out. Please stick around with us if you think we are heading in the right direction, if not, well there is other food at the buffet =P
I'm afraid some people aren't reading TOO carefully... but keep in mind, this is the first time Kitty is serious about an RTS, and she is learning alot everyday. Expect to see more from her down the road, but if you really want to see more kitty, please be patient, supportive, and constructive, it'll help us improve faster =)

As Day9 said once, the most important think is to stick with it as a commentator - dont just do it a few times and give up because you dont feel you know enough etc. Especially in this scenario u guys got going, be prepared for a lot of jokes at your guys expense until you guys are a bit more comfortable and known.
That said, stick around long enough and the jokes will eventually be out of liking u guys rather than laughing at you. Example - Day9 again. Alot of ppl make jokes about him, just last night ppl on his live stream were laughing and saying "hes such a goober" but honestly, Day9 is probably the most known and loved guy that plays this game lol.
I wouldnt be surprised if he enjoys those kind of comments - and not just because he tends to be self deprecating lol... but it shows that just being himself shows his true colors and shows how passionate he is about the game. Which is the key to being an enjoyable and likable commentator.
Hell it must take a lot of guts to be seen by thousands of people and be open about his stuffed bunny Manfred, lol. But do I think that hurt his image? Not at all. Did it set up some jokes? Yes... but I've also seen people talk of "ManfredX's Awesomeness!". So in the end, being real is a good thing.

This.
HDstarcraft, husky and Day[9] pretty much fills all spots tbh. Day[9] knows most, Husky for enthusiasm, and HDstarcraft as a middle-ground.
I prefer day9 because he really knows what he's talking about. If you want to commentate you'd better get some serious experience, I don't care if you have big cleavage or not.
Honesty time. I watched the White Ra Little One game on your channel.
1.IMO, I don't know if you really have the voice for commentary. Its a little grating and nasally to my ears. Maybe its the mic, maybe its nerves, I don't know, but the voice is one of a commentator's most important attribute, rivaling his knowledge of the game itself. You can have all the knowledge and aptitude about the game, but if you have an unpleasant voice (read CROTA), then you're not gonna draw in casuals, and the more hard-core people will just stick to Day 9. Also, Day 9 has a great voice. Its deep, resonating, with a nice slow cadence. I won't say to try to emulate his voice, because its nigh impossible to change one's own voice, but its a nice standard for what commentators (male) should sound like.
2. Your jokes = I was not amused. The samurai joke about zealots slicing people in half...... had me cringing. Don't attempt to force humor into the commentary, because it will always come off artificial and contrived. Unless it comes out naturally, its better to err on the side of professionalism (read HD)
3. Don't advertise it as a male female duo and not have the female speak. On your channel you have several pictures of you two together, but then on the commentary its just you. Either wait until she's ready to commentate before you try to break into the commentating scene, or just take down the pictures and remove the male/female gimmick.
Guy is a decent commentator. Hope the girl learns enough to be a decent commentator otherwise its just a guy with a random girl who says "cute probe there".
one of the things you really have to consider if you want to start commentating is if you have a voice that people can listen to drum on for 1-2 hrs worth of games.

I'm pretty sure that the girl being there is entirely a gimmick to get more viewers. If a girl actually wanted to commentate for the sake of commentating, "girl commentator" wouldn't be in the topic of the post.

yeah i just hope this casting duo stays abreast of the SC2 patch changes.

the girl really didnt say anything. It will be hard if they dont have enough knowledge of the game. if you dont have enough knowledge then you dont have much to say. look at day9. he knows his stuff and he have lots to say that are really useful
The internet: the last bastion of publicly debasing women without any social consequences.
I would suggest that you try and focus a bit more on speaking clearly with some better intonation. You can take a second to say something if it means you'll say it better, if you know what i mean. Don't feel like you have to speak non-stop.
kitty is pretty cute but her voice sounds a bit dragged out - perhaps a bit of practice on pronunciation, intonation and articulation would end up being beneficial
What is actually important is RTS experience as a player. One of the reasons why Day[9]'s casts are so popular (besides his soothing voice) is the insight he brings to his viewers - because he has a lot of experience playing at a very high level in SC:BW, he is able to nitpick at little mistakes and compliment little things that players do that ultimately make or break the game for them, and explain why certain army positions / movements, building placements, strategic responses, etc. are good / bad.
Of course it is important to be (a) good speaker(s), which I don't doubt you are, but: how much RTS experience do you actually have? Why should we listen to your casts, what can you actually explain to your viewers that most of your viewers wouldn't have been able to figure out on their own?
The girl reminds me of peanut who commentated for a bit in SC1. I know this is a bit off topic but does anyone know what happened to her?
On the OP:
I think it is important to take into consideration that this is a guy/GIRL team, commentating is mostly for entertainment (with the exception of Day[9]). Saying that we shouldn't consider or ignore that girl part of that duo is like saying we should ignore the variety they are adding to the commentating scene.
The whole point of commentary is to add extra knowledge and entertainment to a replay. If people are willing to seek out commentaries, then they're almost certainly at a high enough level that your commentaries are not helpful to them.
That's okay; there are many commentators who do little to no analysis during a commentary. However, they make up for it with entertainment value, which your commentaries also lack. You aren't funny, you aren't good speakers, and the majority of what you say is more distractingly useless than entertaining.
Kitty: Your videos seem roughly equivalent to a fifth grader teaching grade 4 math. Yes, you know things, but you don't know them that well and you don't know how to teach them.
My suggestion to both of you is to step away from commentating until you're at a level at which your commentary is helpful, natural and entertaining. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but it really is impossible for casual low- to mid-level players to provide useful commentary. It's great that you want to help e-sports, but you have a few steps to take before you're actually helping anyone.
Hey, this is good! There's some room for improvement obviously, but no one's perfect off the bat. As some are saying, there's some knowledge that still needs to be learned in order for these videos to be really convincing. The SC with Kitty bits are catered to new players and I think they serve that purpose well. It's just that they could be livened up a bit to keep people interested. The best way to do this would probably just be to give yourself a general outline of what you were going to say and try to wing it. It needs to flow more.
I think the real question is, how big of a role does variety play in the commentaries for everyone? Let's not titivate this to what it's not. Might as well start a commentating series of a black guy, a French grandmother, and a German shepherd dog casting SC replays.
Will have to wait to see how you guys transition. From watching Krytos commentate I get the feeling that you guys haven't practised very much. But I think with the two of you working on it at the same time, you'll catch on quickly. What ends up happening a lot for single-commentators when they start out is that sometimes they're not entirely sure what to say during times when there are moments when more of the same is happening (ex: Players are doing standard stuff, no combat at the time, no harrass, macro situations). So learn to get through those moments by watching other commentators and you'll get a real feel for how to get through those.
Another thing to note is that when you work with someone, it's a lot easier to get through and that'll be a nice start for you guys I think. Make sure you don't talk over each other and try to work out who's going to open the start of replays, etcetera.
Looking forward to see you guys in action though.
I'm a commentator myself and you have any questions feel free to PM me. I organise tournaments and look for commentators for those as well, so I might contact you guys in the future. See you around.
we need more gimmicks in starcraft commentating IMO who needs quality when your username is high definition starcraft or your commentating partner is a chick? eventually we'll have commentators dressing up in hydralisk costumes or chicks dressing up as kerrigan to 1up eachother cant f'in wait!

I find it funny how for some people it is okay to use cleavage to attract viewers but it is not okay for the viewers to discuss the cleavage in question because it's offensive for women... I demand a drastic change in Krytos' wardrobe: tight shirts, skinny jeans. Lose the glasses and the nerdy shirt, show us some pecks, etc. And the haircut, oh my...
The cat is okay though, you can never go wrong with a cat on the internet.
Anyway, as you are obviously new to casting, I would recommend some serious thinking over about what exactly are you going to do. While at the moment most good casters are good players as well, getting into the game with the sole idea of becoming a caster might actually turn out to be an advantage because you will not be burdened by your own expectations.

why there is no channel for non pro games, maybe from games in the platin/diamond league .. it would be so much more interesting. make an email account, let the people send you some replays. watch the replays and pick some interesting or good games and then commentate them. sure its more work - but its much better. one reason for that is, that the majority of the gamers learn much more from non pro games, because the players make more mistakes - and so you can point out that mistakes in your commentarys and talk about better solutions. i think many people would like that, and you would be more successful with that. another reason is, that there are a huge number of replays, which are very interesting to watch, and are still untouched from other commentators. i think the people dont wanna see a commentary between a match which they saw 3-4 times before from other commentators.
so, to sum up - in my eyes you would be much more successful with replays from non pro gamers.
I just watched Sen vs. TLO on Desert Oasis and TLO vs. WhiteRa and I didn't really like it. They're pretty much only paying attention to the army's, harrassment and just generally the action on the map and none at all to what's getting produced, what production building / tech is coming up and what the game plan for each player might be.

Why does a woman have to dress "properly" while Day9 can be chronically under dressed? Being professional in an e-sports environment could be different from being a professional in a traditional sports environment why not embrace that fact. Nobody is sitting in front of the computer all dressed up.

I'm pretty sure that the girl being there is entirely a gimmick to get more viewers. If a girl actually wanted to commentate for the sake of commentating, "girl commentator" wouldn't be in the topic of the post.
This is a little unfair, she clearly brings valuable assets to the commentary duo
yeah i just hope this casting duo stays abreast of the SC2 patch changes.
did you guys play broodwar on ICCUP? cuz if neither of you were good you could be Double D's. better name imo. less racist. currently your name is 2/3 racist.

HAHA! Maybe the Kitty could be the last 1/3?
I'll wait until you get better before I bother watching. Day9 and Husky + Live Streams are enough to keep my busy at work... oh yea and the actual work I'm suppose to do.

ahh I love TL
I justed watched kitty's first video. What was pretty bad imo is, since this video series is obviously for super noobs that have never played in multiplayer yet, that you didn't mention that Terran had pre-igniter upgrade. Imagine the poor noobie souls trying to copy this versus someone and then realising that they take 10x longer to kill those drones. They will think it's just cause they suck, lose confidence, stop playing SC2 and then, possibly, kill themselves.

Double D's. I see what you did there. Double D's indeed.
Take your time talking... very annoying to have someone blow through the commentating because they are nervous.. (understandable) but something to work on.
In your basic SC videos you say attack click then move, attack click then move. You don't actually have to attack click. You can just move, press "s", then move again after the shot's been fired. Your units will automatically turn around and shoot. Especially for beginners this is much easier to do than attack, move and doesn't run the risk of moving towards your opponent's units.
EDIT: Also duo commentaries is more interesting than one person talking. I guess for the basic SC series it's short enough that two people wouldn't be necessary, but for the in-game commentaries or anything that's more than a minute or two long it'd be much more entertaining to have both people comment. HD and Husky are both fun to listen to, but if it's HDH the entertainment value is more than doubled.

Because that's just how it is. Any female in a massively male majority community is going to get bashed for whatever reason. Wearing "non-revealing" clothing would have at least prevented most of the comments in this thread from being cleavage jokes.

She doesn't have to dress fancy. She can dress down. I just don't want to be bombarded with cleavage. It cheapens the game. To me you are trying to cover up some shitty part of your show by distracting me with boobs. She can wear stuff off the Handsome Nerd or Jinx, I don't care.
Aw, I was hoping this would be for BroodWar, like Kazart and his wife LOL. I'll listen to some.
I clicked on two videos 'oh I'm gonna be casting alone this time' Then I found one where you are actually dual casting: 'how are you feeling today kitty?' 'I'm actually feeling a little bit congested...'
Sorry, but I stopped there haha... Maybe I will check back again in a month to see if you've gotten better :o
I just subscribed and I wish you luck But like other people said hopefully you have solid commentator skills as well as a "unique" style, and a knowledge of the game mechanics, because there are a handful of VERY good commentators already on the field. Also hopefully you don't solely count on your "feminine assets" in order to gain popularity
Anyway good luck and thanks for bolstering sc2 community.
I agree that we shouldn't cheapen the game and turn this into an oogling fest, but at the same time it could have just been an honest mistake. I mean can you seriously call them out for not thinking of the politics?
@OP - You guys should put a little bit of information about yourselves, I think it would serve to garner general interest. Keep up the good work!
hey everyone, kitty here. krytos and I laughed at some of these comments, especially the screenshot lol. krytos swears he was staring at the other kitty. Usually we wouldn't take the time to address some of the comments here that are not constructive, but some of these we thought we could clarify.
Boobs. I have em. You guys are correct. How should I dress? Lol, I dress however I feel like depending on the weather. Sweats during the winter, dresses during the summer (it's summer now btw =P). Just like the other commentators, Krytos and I do not change our clothes to cast any of our videos. We simply dress in our everyday clothes and keep it real. I did have a good laugh at everyone's analysis at what is appropriate for me to wear. Don't look into it that seriously guys, honestly. We are here to build our commentating skills, bring content to the community (buffet analogy at the top), and have fun for ourselves in the process. If you guys want to have deep philosophical discussions about gender roles, "appropriate" clothing, gimmicks, sexualization of women, etc. that's up to you guys. Krytos and I are not here to talk about a women's studies class, but our goal is to honestly work hard on commentating.
Anyway, even though we're not the best and are still learning lots, krytos and I are serious about improving and building some serious content (as noted with the 50~ uploads in less than 2 weeks). Whether or not people believe that we are more than a gimmick is up to them to decide, we know what we are here for, and we plan to keep on doing it =)
Thanks again to all the supporters =) We hope to keep improving and contribute to esports gaining more momentum.
i have a few questions for kitty, and krytos too i guess since u guys insist on sharing account
1. i really like ur buffet analogy can u expand on that one? 2. what is ur cat's name? 3. r u guys dating? more specifically, is kitty dating any1 4. if u r single, would u consider dating any gamers from the community?
edit: my first 2 questions r not as important to me so if u don't have much time, u can skip them

Solutions:
If you want to make an announcement video, you don't need to aim a camera at yourself to do it:
If you insist on being visible, and you still want what you're saying to be the focus of the video, you need to cut back on distractions:
If you do not try to cut down on distraction, your video comes out like this:
And no, I'm not telling you to be like those commentators. I know you want to be different. However, if you want to improve and be taken seriously, I don't see why you wouldn't want to make your announcement videos more focused.

That's kind of a disgusting argument. It's the same line of reasoning that says a person deserved to raped because of what they wore. It excuses whatever irresponsible and immature behavior the guys display, while something that a person should have a personal choice with, whether in the public eye or not, is condemned as irresponsible. She wasn't really wearing anything out of the ordinary outside of this forum. If you're past puberty, then you're past *having* to stare whenever you see the slightest skin. I'm more concerned about the duo improving their casting...

Yes. Lets compare cutting down on spam with rape. Makes perfect sense.
I enjoyed the commentaries Krytos has done and having two casters whether one be female or not. Is almost always better than one as long as they don't talk over eachother constantly(I'm looking at you Raelcun!), conflicting views and a bit of banter in the lulls of a game.

Having watched these two individuals try to drum up attention to their commentary channel since the beginning; the whole playing innocent is a gimmick.
This group has been constantly spamming forums and using suggestive wording in their threads in effort to try to get people to watch them for quite a while now. They get called out each time for how bad their commentaries are due to the fact that the guy is using the girl as a gimmick to get people to watch when the girl knows nothing of this game period. They eventually get called out, leave the thread and come back in 24 hours to spam again.
It gets really old fast, but lets be honest. If you're good, you don't need to use your sexuality to score viewers.
I will say I am impressed at the amount of people who saw right through the gimmick and how she is being exploited.
I won't bash them to hard because I think they get that every time they spam their threads. I just hope they get good so at least they are interesting to watch.
You can't hate on the girl for wearing skimpy clothing. The entire point of their channel is try to score viewers via this girl. Its a gimmick, sex sells.
I think once she actually learns how to play computer games and shows a genuine interest in it outside of being forced into it, the cast could probably be great.
Hmm, that didn't sound very positive did it. I can sense the banhammer coming. I should tech burrow while I got the chance.
Anyways I wish you guys luck. I may not agree with your advertising tactics and exploitation of women but, I can respect your willingness to put yourself out there and try it. So kudos.

Maybe you shouldn't make too many assumptions about people. How do you know that I am being exploited? Yes, sex sells, but it's just a plus because I'm female. As for computer games (and maybe video games in general), I play them. I grew up with video games. I own a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Gamecube, Playstation, Playstation 2, and a Wii (too poor to get a ps3 right now dammit.) I've only gotten into computer games in the past few years. Aside from all that game playing, I also enjoy going shopping with friends and putting on makeup
Also, my gamer tag doesn't refer to anything sexual. It's a reference to Hello Kitty. It sounds a lot less weird introducing myself as Kitty rather than Hello Kitty
But thanks for the luck and I will continue on trying to get better at casting.
I must say, especially now with all the new "banlings" it is truly shocking that such sexist remarks such as "oh you have cleavage as your gimmick, i get it" etc is not being moderated, with the posters being penalized.
I am a new poster, but I doubt that it is good for your website to have such bigots posting freely.
lol, all the cleavage bashing comments are funny to read.
Anyways, as a guy with a social life, let me say right now that how kitty is dressed really isn't too uncommon for how girls dress now a days, and honestly i don't even find it that revealing, at all. Sure guys are gonna look at her breasts(i know i did lol) but really now, only being able to focus on that for the WHOLE length of her videos might be a hint that you need to learn to control yourself a bit more. A normal guy would perhaps feel slightly distracted for a bit and then move on. But only focusing on that until the video is over and then bashing her for dressing appropriate(at least imo) is probably not the right thing to be doing. Of course this is the internet, and boobs will be mentioned without a doubt, but that's really not kitty's fault.
So i checked the vids and i think you guys got a lot of learning to do.... But hey, you guys are new to this and that's completely normal. I really hope you guys keep this up so you can improve quickly. And while i don't judge you guys completely based on having a girl commentator, the fact that you DO have a girl commentator is really refreshing and definitely puts you on the map.

It's really more of sexism than bigotry and to be honest I understand it. Video Gaming, and especially Progamers are primarly males. I don't like anyone trying to capitilazie on us based purely on sexual appeal. I want GOOD esports casters not gimmicky ones.
Like I said before, wear a nerd t-shirt. Goto the Handsome Nerd or Jinx. There is no reason NOT to wear one because A. it supports the sport you are trying so hard to get into and B. it removes any sexual lure you may be using to draw in viewers.
Our token gaming nerd sex symbol has been filled, and her name is Olivia Munn.

Yeah, that kind of stuff really deserves a warning or s/t.
I watched one video for 30 seconds and you suggested that TLO's 1 rax -> CC was so that he could turn his CC into a planetary fortress to protect his base....I don't need to see more.
Kudos for having a girl or else you wouldn't be getting this much attention, but too bad it will take her 1-2 years to build up the knowledge and experience to commentate at any useful capacity.

the only reason i included that is because i can't believe people would consider what she wears to be that outrageous to the point that she gets bashed for being distracting.

Hmm, that didn't sound very positive did it. I can sense the banhammer coming. I should tech burrow while I got the chance.
Anyways I wish you guys luck. I may not agree with your advertising tactics and exploitation of women but, I can respect your willingness to put yourself out there and try it. So kudos.
Honestly, I dont understand how so many people think that is "skimpy clothing"?
Is it just because this is a video game forum? Because if someone was wearing the same thing anywhere else, nobody would mention anything. Hell, typical mid-teen girls go to school wearing far worse things than that... not to mention that the same outfit would have no issues in a work place. A news woman on TV right now in Tampa is wearing almost the same thing, except with an open dress-suit on top.
So why is it a problem here? No offense but some of the people here are acting like they have been sheltered and never seen a girl in years lol.
And on the topic of "using sex to sell"... how is that the case? How many videos do you even see either of them in? That's just silly.

Kudos for having a girl or else you wouldn't be getting this much attention, but too bad it will take her 1-2 years to build up the knowledge and experience to commentate at any useful capacity.
Are you seriously saying this? These people (all the casters) do this out of their own damn time. With their own damn money, and the ONLY thing they get back, is the "thank you we love you KKstarcraft keep up the good work!". And then we have pricks like you that go on say shit like this.
"Kudos for being a girl otherwise you won't get this much attention?" How old are you? GTFO
Skimpy clothing? Wow, you guys must not live around any young people at all. I'm on a college campus far far away from any beaches and I'm no longer surprised if I see women walking around in a bikini in the summer. I'm sorry, but a little cleavage is not "skimpy clothing".
Yes, she will most likely attract people because she is female. That is the nature of internet/video games being predominantly filled with younger males. However, this isn't even limited to the internet, how many companies hire young women as secretaries/waitresses/etc? A lot of working with people jobs are filled with younger women, its part of society, its part of our sexuality, etc. It's not going to change and while you might call it cheap, it's really nothing new.
However, I do have to say that the quality of the commentary is severely lacking. I watched a vid and skimmed through a few others, and I have to say you guys have two problems:
- Filler talk. @stalker harass video "This is a really good situation for the protoss because it forces the terran to react to what you are doing to him." - says nothing at all. "Leaves his wall open, so, um, basically anything can happen" - no it doesn't. He can shut off the wall at any time, and "anything can happen" is filler language. "Terran is figuring out what he should do next. Whether he should change his build order, send in his marines [etc]" - again, that's not really what's going on. All the terran is going to do is have a little back and forth until a marauder comes out.
- Target audience. The people that will learn from stalker harass and hellion harass will have far more problems actually getting these stalkers/hellions out than using them effectively. Good players, of course, know these things because they aren't something very advanced, but bad players really need to get their builds down before starting to do anything like that. I suggest giving more insight into how to actually do a fast hellion harass or a fast stalker build instead of just talking about it. This will also help you fill more time in your vids.
Other than that, keep up! I haven't seen a single girl be good at SC2 (and I know quite a lot online from WoW and a few other games), so if you can prove that you're good at the game, you'll officially be the first one I've seen.

seriously that is very normal looking clothing. haters gunna hate the commentary needs tons of work, but its a start
I think you guys have potential, but you really should have learned more about the game first before casting. It seems like you say a lot of out of place or just plain random stuff. I'm sure you'll be good in time, but as of right now the commentary needs serious improvement.
Keep up ur good work. I dunno how much u read from this but i hope it helps!
Husky and HD really got a lot of attention from my friends and me when they casted Korean games. Im korean living in canada so i have my sources but for a lot of people here, it is really exotic. The girl doesnt look like shes a korean but I cant tell about her male counterpart. If either of u, or any of ur friends are korean, get korean replays. Ygosu and PlayXP are really nice.
I think day 9 is very appearing to almost anyone because He is a fanatic fan himself. He gets as excited as we do about all the big players, even though he is a very well known player himself. Korean commentators do this too. Cant go wrong with respecting big names
And in the beginning can u give us background on the players? We all know who Sen and WhiteRa are but not all of us know his recent records, rankings and possible momentum he may be riding on when the game was played.
I started following esport when the "emperor" boxer won his first big tournament in 2000. I notice every now and then that even commentators don't know all the players from all teams, past and present. But at least i think you should know all sc2 players and their background to some depth.
so i watches some videos, and if you want more viewers, you realy should buy a better mic - or speak louder. its hard to understand everything you say - so as a viewer i cant relax and watch the video - because i always have to struggle to understand what you say.
I just skimmed over this thread, but I have few comments which you might be able to take on board to help improve.
I watched a couple of your early commentaries as I saw a thread posted on the Blizzard forums. I thought they seemed awkward, unrehearsed and maybe forced - there wasn't really any synergy between the two of you. You seemed very slow at telling me the information which was already obvious to me as I could see what was happening on the screen. Try to focus on the non-obvious. There's a really bad F1 commentator in the UK. He used to be in radio but now he's on TV; he usually ends up simply describing what's happening.
Totally agree with the post above regarding "aiming the camera at yourself". HD tried doing some "pregame shows" where he pointed the camera at himself and tried to hype up the forthcoming commentaries. They pretty much sucked, you might want to check the comments on those YouTube videos.
On the positive side though, your latest videos (again, I have only watched a couple) seem VASTLY improved from your earliest ones. I'm sure if you keep it up you'll eventually be up there with HD and Husky.
P.S. I suggest getting a monitor-mounted webcam with a built in microphone, they seem to have the best audio quality within a reasonable price range. I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and the microphone is awesome.

As brutal as it is, thats life and thats an opinion. I am not saying I agree with what was said but things can't be all happy go lucky all the time and if someone is doing something wrong they'll know it. The only bad thing about commentators with bad info on this game is that it spreads to the viewers.
Do you guys do dual commentaries? All the vids Ive seen (15+) have one person commentating on their own. I thought u guys were a commentating duo (as in u would commentate together)?? U just seem like 2 separate commentators who just occasionally make vids together explaining generic stuff with facetime.
Can u guys please commentate together more often? I feel slightly misled atm.
Oh man, some serious laughs in this thread, thx TL.
@ Krytos
You got a good voice, and flow, seems a good mix between Huskys energy and HDs crisp commentary. I was going to ask about the Duo commentating, but I dont think Kitty has a deep enough understanding of the game to be worthwhile listening to for any level of play.
@ Kitty
I think basic starcraft #5 is case in point. I don't see how this video is useful for noobs, as you clearly had no idea why terran was doing what was being done, and letting me know the stalker is "shooting as the supply depot" while the marines "try to shoot at it" is not useful commentary. Commentating is not where you should be learning the game you're commentating on.. This video clearly illustrates this.
Commentators gain respect for having the ability to convey ideas and information clearly, efficiently, and accurately. As it sits I really feel you need to deepen your knowledge of the game and the mechanics before your videos will be truly useful to newer players. The blind cannot teach the deaf to see.
Decent commentary, my only gripe is when you(krytos) put an almost theatrical amount of emphasis on certain type of words or actions. Best example I can give is the way that you introduce the two opponents at the beginning of the game. You make it almost seem like you're going for the movie trailer type guy voice and it's just really way over the top for my tastes.
But honestly, that's about it for now. Keep up the good work. Practice makes perfect.

Although I definitely agree game knowledge is the most important part about commentating, some people are looking more for the enthusiasm and the enjoyment in it. Specifically bronze players.
The only way to become a good commentator in my opinion is be good at what you are commentating at.
I've always found this really interesting... A lot of people say this. in it seems videogames are the only sport where this is the case. I mean no expects the ESPN dudes to be good at anything. and hell most sport reporters don't know shit and yet they are out there....
Is it because that the majority of the public are not experts? and therefore the audence is more receptive when it comes to baseball etc? As a huge soccer fan I've just gotten used to being able to correct the local analyists, just the way it is.
I'm not sure if this comes from a sort of elitism that is naturally found at the top level of video games? I'm not sure.
One thing is for sure I've listen to some great sc players that are horrible commentators. It's a completely different skillset, plus just having been born with an interesting voice. Obviously indepth knowledge of the game is a bonus, but if you limit yourself to top level players as commentators you're left with... I don't know... 5 people? if that that are actually any good in english.
the videogame world is a tough if you're not the on of the 'best' and also a guy. The doublestandards around are epic.
OMG the tarson interview is sooooooooo awesome tarson's voice is so smooth and soothing, he makes me orgasm wen he opens his mouth, and he is so skilled and has such insightful things to say g2 say this tarson interview is my fav interview of all time ... ^_^
Could you guys post the audio files of the interviews or post them as a podcast on itunes? I probably won't play a series of youtube videos but I'd listen to them via mp3 player at work, probably others in the same boat
Hi guys, wanted to leave my support and criticism at the same time~ used to be a commentator (youtube.com/hazelynut), got around the amount of YT support you have now, and gave up because it became a stressful thing for me. That, and negative comments always suck when your self-esteem is low. That, and I actually was not good enough at the game to give valuable advice to people.
@Kitty,
Make an honest attempt to improve your StarCraft. Do your homework. Learning how to play SCII at a better-than-average (aka you know all the units, the spells, the common strategies, the things that will let you beat all your casual-gaming friends) level is not actually that hard, and if you spend maybe two weeks in full immersion, you'll be commentating at a much more respectable level.
Don't pull the "I'm a female" card, try to avoid it. Even if you're not trying to pull that card, people will assume the worst of you. If you wink at the camera or wear low dresses, people will assume the worst of you. True gamers will think less of you, random sketchy YouTubers will objectify you.
@Krytos
Sorry xD Haven't had the chance to listen to that many of your commentaries. I think you give some vague play by plays that are a little on the filler side. Your enthusiasm shows more in the recent commentaries that I've previewed - good job! :D
In general, you guys probably both need to play the game a lot more and possibly watch other commentators (Day9 in particular) to start gaining that deeper level of understanding past the play-by-play. If you don't have the time commitment to do that, then REALLY work on your color commentary to the point where people don't care if you're making bad calls. Sometimes it doesn't matter. Be really funny.
