My daughter though likes to see it. She goes all "ohh that little mouse died to that man" when a ling gets killed by a marine, hehe. She's five btw. Haha that's awesome. Kids are so funny!

I tell pretty much everyone who I know reasonably well that I'm into Starcraft - if they don't know it already Most of my friends, workmates, and my girlfriend as well know how much I enjoy it. As someone else referenced earlier in the thread, and Day[9] says, you should be proud of what you love.
Anyone who is worth anything will realise when something is important to you, and support you in that. My girlfriend, while she doesn't play Starcraft 2, knows how into it I am, and doesn't mind when I play for hours on end (we live together) - sometimes she'll watch, and she'll always be happy to hear how I'm going in league games etc, and will comment when I mention things about it to my friends.
She also listens along a lot of time when I'm watching Day[9]'s casts - he's able to cast/commentate in such an entertaining, captivating way - and make things easy to understand for people who wouldn't otherwise get it. <3 Day[9]

Same story here, but i just fought my way through since i was like 16. We had some convo's and i just told them that it is something they wont understand, they asked me to play less FPS (killing people is obviously evil lol) so i did, they dont mind me playing SC2..
I told my mom about SC2 release she kinda tried to kill my hype for it since im 20 and shold not be playing games anymore according to her. The funny thing is that she came around and was kinda counting days before the release with me hehe....
My GF hate that i play video games, but supports me, if that makes any sense. She knows that it is important to me so she cares about it too now. Even got her to play sc2 vs easy ai, its rly funny watching her as she freaks out when 2 marines 1 helion show up, she has like 2 immortals and 1 of each other unit and she just boxes EVERYTHING and a clicks lol...
I told most of my friends about sc2(they are gamers anyway) they bought we play from time to time. People that i hang out with all know me to be this crazy gamer that does nothing but plays games, and secretly wishes he was Korean.
I told all my GF's friends about SC, SC2 E-Sports how its huge and awesome in KOREA, showed them the plaguuuuuuue! vid they thought it was hilarious actually i bought the PLAGUUUUUUE! shirt from thehandsomenerd.com for one of them for her birthday and she thought it was the best gift evar!

I tell people to imagine a game of chess. A game of chess where you both have different pieces, you can play on boards of different shapes. you can make more pieces. And you dont take turns.

That's what I said to make my boyfriend switch from chess to sc:bw a few years ago

Since most people stop paying attention pretty quickly when I'm describing Starcraft, I usually refer to the experience as, "like Chess, but instead of being turn-based, you just move your pieces as fast as you can. Except twice as intense because you have to also build your pieces."
That often piques their interest, at which point I'm free to begin describing the eSports and Pro-Gaming scene.
When I put it in that context, I find people are a lot more interested.

Somehow I fell into having all friends that don't play SC, or any RTS. They're big sports fans, watching, playing , etc (They play Tiger Woods golf, how shitty is that?) and pretty much just laugh at me when they ask what I'm doing and I tell them "Playing Starcraft". I know there isn't a chance in hell I'll get them to play more than 1-2 times, so I don't bother trying.
I play it up though, and I'll often go on rants about how big it is in Korea and talk about about Muta micro, or Reaver drops, or 3 gate Robo or something else they have no idea about/interest in just to troll.

I actually have 6 or 7 guys from my workplace into SC2. One of the guys was over for a couple drinks and I fired up a game. He had already purchased it and was just starting to get into it, never really played many RTSs but enjoyed the few he had. Anyways when he saw me play at first he said he kinda felt depressed lol. I'm no pro, sitting around low Diamond Zerg but he was simply amazed at how fast things happen. The depressed part he said came in because he was ridiculous slow. I told him that once you get the basic knowledge down your timing will greatly increase. I then was able to sort of coach him on simply things like queuing commands and such.
But they were kind of already into gaming, at least a little bit. And since a few of us had it, the others that have an old pc or play on the xbox mainly decided to jump on and play. We actually have a "lan" party planned in a month or two.
As for the GF.. it's a no go. lol. She doesn't get it, doesn't want to but that works. It's something I do in my free time and I can go into my own little world for an hour or so :D

My parents pretty much gave in to the fact that I love playing video games, and that I am very good at them. It took a while, but after seeing me watch countless hours of Korean broodwar, they realized that games aren't so bad after all. They, especially my dad, used to hate seeing me play games because they thought it was a waste of time. Recently however they have become much more supportive to me, and they even let me get an alienware laptop for sc2, so I am very grateful for that.

I tried to get a good friend who is deep into video games but mostly shooters, into starcraft.
He replied that he didn't like the feel of rts like games and went on to saying back in the day one of his friends tried him on Battle for Arrakis and he didn't like it.
I told him that comparing SC to BfA is like comparing 78 World Cup finals to a bunch of kids kicking a paper filled cloth ball between two large rocks. He still didn't budge

I was seeing a girl for a while who consistently kicked my ass at video games. That was a new twist. Didn't work out in the end as I was leaving the country and she was stuck in a shitty job, but it was cool.
Now I'm married, and my wife loves video games. Mostly she plays the simplistic ones, but she's actually pretty good, and when we play a game neither of us has seen before, she's not far behind me in skill. Just right^^
Our 6-year old boy also loves video games, and I go ahead and indulge him, when I'm not hogging the computer/xbox to myself. Sure, NOW he's a noob, but in ten years, it's gonna be good times. For anyone who's played Heroes of Newerth: about a week ago he started shooting out his arm and shouting 'You're Mine!' while grabbing some snacks and messily stuffing them into his face. Adorable =]
The only real problem people close to me have with video games is when I play games that a)take 100% concentration, b)take a while to finish, and c)can't really be quit mid-game unless I want to suffer a ratings/reputation hit or piss off my gaming buddies. Unfortunately, my favorite games of all time are DOTA and Starcraft. :/

Dune 2 was awesome, just wish you could select more than 1 unit at a time =[

Dune 2 was indeed awesome, I was referring to the overall improvement on the style all the way from it to SC2, and say something cool to impress him :D

Haha well:
I'm 39 (as I just mentioned in the "can old geezers play SC2" thread someone just posted) and of the four people in my office at work, three of us are playing, with me more focused on melee matches, one guy just doing the campaign, and one guy who's started doing some really amazing things with the map editor. I work in visual effects, so probably half the people in the building are video game junkies.
As for family and friends, everyone's understanding, but levels of personal interest vary. My mother, who's 65, watched me play a few games and was fascinated to watch but playing the game held no interest for her. Some of my female friends are gamers and some aren't -- the gamers tend to have given it a try, with varying results, and the non-gamers just find the social world surrounding the game interesting.
I don't know one person in my life who would tell me to stop playing though.
Edit: Interestingly enough, both Day[9] and qxc have gone to my (very small) college, Harvey Mudd, so a few of my non-gamer friends from college have started following the game just to cheer them on with their various SC2 activities. It's the kind of thing Harvey Mudd people do, so nobody bats an eyelash at it.

Me and my Gf watch Commentaries together at dinner. It's quite entertaining. She appreciates it on the funny commentaries and epic-ness level (basic understandning of sc2). On that note, any1 noe any funny/epic games with decent commentaries to watch?
I'm the only one of my friend to really play this. But being the best at it has it's merits Working on getting them to play too. But they're dota freaks -____-"

I went to take a shower hoping she would love it enough I could buy her a new laptop so we could play together. I get out of the shower...I walk back in there to see what she was up to and appearantly I did not clarify enough... She had soooo many drones and overlords...because she couldnt build anything else. I asked her if she made a spawning pool and she replied, I cant they keep attacking me and killing my drones... O.o LOL that's like the cutest image ever.

Ok, first off: Dune 2? Was amazing. I played that almost as much as Shining Force, a game I still play annually.
I'm so glad this thread is here. Lots of tips and quick links to impressive videos
If it comes up, I usually try to explain SCBW/SC2 to people with the pro scene and slowly turn that into them being the bad guy in the situation.
Me: Oh yeah, people travel to South Korea just to see these matches where players play for the equivalent of thousands of dollars.
Them: ...People not only get payed to play video games, but other people pay to watch that crap?
Me: This coming from someone who many sundays spends hundreds of hard earned dollars to pack themself into a stadium like a sardine, get beer spilled on them by the drunkards behind them, and watch a bunch of guys who are payed multiple millions to smash their meat heads into each other and pat each other's asses?
EDIT: Btw, some really cute stories here.
