You can add your hotkey schemes without editing original MPQ files. SC2Tools modifying your MPQ files, so it's illegal. But adding files isn't illegal, because you don't changing game files. It's undocummented thing in SC2, that the game will read from folders "Replays", "Saves", etc, AND from folder with "Hotkeys" name (if you will create it)
You can edit only hotkeys, that are in schemes. You can't edit unit/building specific hotkeys
1) Create file with any_name.sc2hotkeys with same syntax, like official hotkey schemes
2) Download this file with original hotkey schemes
3) Open your file any_name.sc2hotkeys and add this code
[Settings]
[Commands] TownCamera=Equals ReplaySpeedInc=Backspace
Instead TownCamera and ReplaySpeedInc you can put your hotkeys from original hotkey file. Open any original file and find any hotkey. Example:
Button/Hotkey/BunkerAttack=A
Put blue text BunkerAttack=A to your created file any_name.sc2hotkeys instead TownCamera and ReplaysSpeedInc
And you must REMOVE CONFLICTING HOTKEYS (one hotkey with 2 buttons)
4) Put any_name.sc2hotkeys file to My documents/StarCraft II/Hotkeys/
5) You can select your scheme in hotkey menu ingame options
This topic for peoples, who can't use Grid scheme (really good hotkey scheme), Standart or Classic.
P.S. If you're using Grid scheme, you must put all Grid hotkeys (QWERT, ASDFT, ZXCVB) to your new hotkey scheme too
CommandButton00=Q CommandButton01=W CommandButton02=E CommandButton03=R CommandButton04=T CommandButton05=A CommandButton06=S CommandButton07=D CommandButton08=F CommandButton09=G CommandButton10=Z CommandButton11=X CommandButton12=C CommandButton13=V CommandButton14=B
Or game will use standart (not Grid) hotkeys
You can change only interface hotkeys. I don't know, how to change unit specific hotkeys.

Yes, no editing blizz files. But you're need an original hotkey file for change something.
It's worked on beta, didn't tested on SC2 release version
|
|
Nice, that's cool. Am using Sc2Tools right now, would be nice if the tool creates such a file instead of editing the mpq... gonna suggest that immediately ;o
|
Wait so you havent tested this on release yet?

As you can see on screenshot, it adds another hotkey scheme. You're need only original file with hotkey syntax for editing.
|
whawhawhawhaaaat?!
sweet, it works, cheers m8
|
Can you post a cut&paste of the standard hotkey setup so that I can see the correct syntax please?

There's so many stuff I don't understand.
1st there isn't a directory called hotkeys in my SC folder, I have to create it? 2nd what do I have to type in the txt in order to change the hotkeys I want?
O_o
** Edit ok I managed to create the file properly (I had to activate extensions in order to name it correctly).
But I still don't understand how I change the hotkeys :x

1) Yes, you must create it 2) Read topic again please, I don't have original file with syntax of all ingame hotkeys, that you can edit. If you will find this original file, you can put it to this "Hotkeys" folder, rename and edit. And there will be no game file editing, because we're only adding files, not editing

Oh... oh. Used that already but thought it's rather a backup in case I mess the current hotkeys up. It saves with the right ending? Well gonna try it out then, thanks.

Oh god makes me want to switch back to terran so I can abuse F2/F3/F4 again, since as zerg bases/queens are already 6, 7, 8, 9, 0 for me..

The .sc2hotkeys file is pretty bare, there. Is there one that's actually complete?
I ask this because I don't speak russian, so I can't really read that thread.

Wow, why didn't Blizzard tell us about this ? I had to modify my MPQ files since beta.
You are awesome. How did you find this out ?
SC2Tools by Tiler (save as file) + This method by Axelerator = epic legal win.
Thanks Existor for creating this thread.

Why is it not legal to add a file to your own computer, as long as it isn't modifying the original files? If it wasn't "legal" they'd just make Starcraft II not look for/read files from your documents folder. They have to code it specifically to look for these files. If it isn't something they want to support, they can simply tell the game to no longer look for those files.. editing the actual MPQ files would be a breach of the EULA and could result in a ban, but this isn't touching the Blizzard stuff, and won't change any sort of checksum the game probably runs on the original files anyways. so life is happy
|
how did you discover this? can't believe blizzard hasnt mentioned this
|
this is so crazy. so blizz gave use a rather normal way to have customkeys but doesnt tell anyone about it. dunno if thats more funny or sad.
really great find sir. good2know when the patch hits in 3 days.

- you created folders with same names, like in MPQ files - put some edited files to folders - game will read files from MPQ files first, then after it will read files from created folders
Now it works only with My document folder with Hotkeys. It doesn edit original files! If there no hotkeys, game will use original hotkeys.
Ah, now you can FIX SURRENDER HOTKEY!

Since I am currently using grid hotkeys I am curiousif there's a download available that contains the grid hotkeys so I can finally put the attack button back on A.
|
|
WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE MAIN PAGE.
|

Read topic again! -.- You're ADDING FILE, not replacing
You're downloaded files with original syntax for get original hotkeys. It's a standart txt files, that contains all ingame hotkeys. You can select any hotkey and put it to your scheme and modify in your file. It's will not edit original game files.
|
Are you sure this is legal way and we wont have any further problem with Blizzard???
|

I had already done that with the SC2 Tools thing, everything is grid style with a few exceptions.
Build/A-Build is on Q/W Unit Skills are on QWE Warpgates on R (I Main Protoss, **** the Y Key) A is attack Other unit functions (patrol, hold, etc) are the normal non grid hotkeys. Random other things.
Its really easy. Just make it with that SC2 tools app, save it as a text and add it as done in the OP. Simple.
|
Very nice! No more replacing mpq when patching. And its so easy to port to another installation of sc2 without messing around with that sc2 installation. + a its only a single file to edit. great

This is extraordinarily convenient. I suppose it's the foundation for Blizzard's eventual implementation of completely customizable hotkeys. Until Blizz polishes that and releases it, this will have to do

I have yet to hear about anyone being banned for using custom hotkeys, via editing MPQ or otherwise, and it would be frankly retarded for that to happen.

Still confused. So if I put "ControlGroupAssign1=`+1" into the My Hotkeys file, does that mean I've switched assigning Control Groups from "Control+1" to "Tilde+1"?

I changed Immortals to and the Cybernetics to Q, and removed every Surrender/Quit hotkey.

i dunno if its your english but its really hard to understand im trying to make control group 7 into control group W ( i assign and append with w instead of 7 ) and i got this : [Settings]
[Commands] UI/Hotkey/ControlGroupAssign7=Control+w UI/Hotkey/ControlGroupAppend7=Shift+w (im a protoss player and im used to warpgates :D)
but its not workign so what am i doing wrong?
|
Sorry I couldn't manage to do this. How do I assemble a hotkey file with grid and "select all Warpgates" on Z?
I tried opening the text file in sc2tools and simply fill in all grid hotkeys, but there was no option for "select all Warpgates".

UI/Hotkey/ControlGroupAssign7=Control+w
UI/Hotkey/ControlGroupAppend7=Shift+w
Delete red text and read original file (that you're downloaded) with hotkey syntax

There are no MPQ editing

i actually dont mind using the standard keys. it helps me improve my hand speed and accuracy across the keyboard and not just the wasd area. anyway it certainly doesnt sound illegal so people shouldnt have trouble over this method.

I've switched my TownHall key and my CameraSave keys without issues, but I'm having issues changing Build Queen and Spawn Larva (morphalisk).
Do the non-UI hotkeys need a different format?

Russian Federation4295 Posts
I've switched my TownHall key and my CameraSave keys without issues, but I'm having issues changing Build Queen and Spawn Larva (morphalisk). Queen syntax is very easy:
Queen=Q
For custom hotkeys for all units you're need to open GameHotkeys_button.txt (or GameHotkeys_button2.txt, no different, only some changed hotkeys)
Do the non-UI hotkeys need a different format? What you mean?
|
Right now I have
[Settings] [Commands] Queen=Z TownCamera=Q
and the TownCamera one is working, while the Queen is not. This is in LiquidHotkeys.sc2hotkeys.
Are you saying that I need to create a file called GameHotkeys_button.txt and put Queen=Z in there, or that there's a GameHotkeys_button.txt file somewhere that I need to find?
On September 20 2010 08:28 Existor wrote:What you mean? What I mean is that it seems like changing things such as TownCamera, CameraSave, Quit Game hotkeys (all UI things) works fine with this method, but changing things like Build Zergling, Queen, inject larva, burrow, etc. don't, or at least seem to need something differently formatted.

txt files, that you're downloaded, are help and FAQ for you (you can copy from them hotkeys with their names and put to your scheme and edit)

Ok I just finished converting my previously mentioned hotkey scheme for all races to the hotkey format, expand the quote below and just copy paste that into the file.
Features
Gridkeys for everything Except - Attack is now A Other unit functions (patrol, etc) are the standard hotkey Idol Worker is ` Camera keys are CTRL+F1-F8 to bind and F1-F8 to use Warpgates are R Build/A-Build is Q/W Unit Skills are QWE. Some zerg units have a Z key due to being unable to QWER (conflict with warpgate key, so if you play zerg you might want to change that.)

Still no luck getting any "Build unit" hotkeys to change. Do we need to make it Queen_Liquid=Z?

Meh, I just wasted a lot of time on trying something similar to what Chronicle tried, as well as various other things (e.g. having [Settings]Suffix=_GLS and then trying to override the attack command hotkey).
As far as I can tell so far, this method does not allow arbitrarily changing hotkeys for building, training, researching, attack-move etc., only the ones listed in the hotkeys settings window.
Using
[Settings] Suffix=_GLS [Commands] ...
one can choose between the basic layouts (GLS (Grid Left Side), GRS, SC1 (Classic), ...) etc, but not alter those.
One possibility would be that there is one more .ini section in which overriding unit hotkeys is possible. [Commands] only seems to contain edits to hotkey paths starting with "UI/Hotkey/". A different section containing edits for "Button/Hotkey/" hotkeys is plausible imo. Sadly there is no example of such a section anywhere in the MPQs since the pre-installed layouts just use one of basic layouts (SC1, GLS, etc) without modification.

Yeah, that seems to be the case. Shame really, the functionality is there but we don't know how to use it since for some weird and unexplored reason, Blizzard won't tell us =(

I'm trying to find out how to do this but can't figure it out
When I play zerg, I number all my queens as 6, and to larva inject I press: 6(select queens) x(inject) shift
(for each hatch) backspace (center on base) -> click
where can I change backspace to, say tab?

I wasted a ton of time coming to the same conclusion, and have since given up. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if anyone fixes it, but for now I guess I'll just stick with .mpq editing.

Nice find!
I would also point out that since this method doesn't modify the .mpq file, that you don't need to deal with patches failing due to checksums not matching.

Thats why you're need to download those txt files, where you can "Search" text "Backspace", copy it to your scheme and change to Grave (as example)
It's original
TownCamera=Backspace

To answer my own question:
The in-game push-to-talk hotkey setup helped me figure out that § maps to 'BackSlash'. However, I wasn't able to bind anything to that key even though game did show that the command was correctly bound to backslash. I tried Alt+BackSlash next and it seems to work, so I guess I'm happy with that.

Has anyone had success remapping the idle worker to another key (preferably Tilda)?
Here is my attempt IdleWorker=Tilda but it sticks to F1 which messes up my camera saves
|
Ok I've come to a conclusion as to why nothing is working. Only UI Hotkeys that the profile config menu ingame displays can be edited, and new hotkey profiles are the standard layout by default. This means only a few commands can be changed ATM such as the Warpgate key, Idle Worker, Etc. Nothing else will change which is a shame.
I believe the reason for this is the same reason there is 2 hotkey txt files per each of the games profiles, which you can see if you do an MPQ edit. So for the time being until we discover what the other 1 is then nothing so far will work. However once we discover what it is then everything posted so far should work in that file.

Nothing will work atm except some UI keys such as Idle Worker, warpgates, Camera, ETC. For the most part currently this is near useless but it does prove that the functionality is there. Why Blizz won't let/tell us how to use that functionality is the current question.

Didn't work for me.. I changed all the hotkeys on SC2Tools, saved to a file (checked the file to see if all the hotkeys were as I put them, they were), put the file in the folder.. I can select my hotkeys file on the in-game menu, but the hotkeys are still the same as default =\

Anyone know what _GRS and _NRS mean under the Control Group Hotkeys?

Anyone know what _GRS and _NRS mean under the Control Group Hotkeys? GRS - Grid Right Side NRS - N.... Right SIde (don't know, what N is)

No you can not. Changing unit keys with the methods described in this topic does not work currently, only the changing of certain UI keys works. Everything else reverts to the standard layout.

blizzard already said they will patch custom hotkeys into next patch.
seems like they did it already with the beta and then waited for 1.1 patch for the "OMG! U SO AWSUM! <3333333 BLIZZARD <333333333"

ANyway, using sc2tool for MODIFYING mpq files is too risky.
Schemes contain only standart interface hotkeys

Oh, so this is only for interface? What I needed was unit/building/spells hotkeys..

Its not illegal otherwise thousands upon thousands would of been banned by warden on WC3 for custom unit models/textures. Unless you are cheating blizzard does not care what you tweak.

Super cool. I use the lefty grid which is just chock full of bugs. You can't use the question mark, town center doesn't work, so irritating. Definitely gonna fix that stuff. Nice find.

When did they say that? Source?

I have been experimenting with this and can't quite seem to get it work. I'm probably like many zergs, trying to move the Select Hatch (backspace) key over to the left of the keyboard. As you can see I am using the left handed grid based keys.
I have it somewhat working but cannot seem to get Cancel to work, this is what I have so far:
[Settings] Suffix=_GLS
[Commands] TownCamera=Grave CommandButton00=Q CommandButton01=W CommandButton02=E CommandButton03=R CommandButton04=T CommandButton05=A CommandButton06=S CommandButton07=D CommandButton08=F CommandButton09=G CommandButton10=Z CommandButton11=X CommandButton12=C CommandButton13=V CommandButton14=B AICancel=Escape ChatCancel=Escape CinematicSkip=Escape ConversationSkipAll=Escape DialogDismiss=Escape ObserveClearSelection=Escape SelectionCancelDrag=Escape Cancel=Escape CancelBuilding=Escape CancelSlot=Escape
But when I cancel it is still somehow using B as the hotkey. What am I missing here?
|
Well I'm trying to switch the hotkeys to build advanced buildings and regular buildings from
Advanced -> Regular (V -> B) to Regular -> Advanced (V -> B)
Button/Hotkey/ZergBuild=V Button/Hotkey/ZergBuildAdvanced=B & ZergBuild=V ZergBuildAdvanced=B
Doesn't work, seems like you can only remap the prebuild hotkeys from the main list of hotkeys

Or for the REAL Lazy that fail at txt files, you can just download the file here and place it in your hotkey directory [url blocked] Edit - Ha, not working =P It should work though, no idea why it is not. If anyone could get it working for me (and anyone else interested) I'd appreciate it. I'll mess around and see whats up. bump
Only works sort of. I have european keyboard layout and changed all =Z to =Y but for example WarpInStructures is still Z which is not grid layout style for me. How do i change this?
|
@Merikh:
I was trying to get Select Hatch on the tilde key while using grid based hotkeys. The example you showed me switches Select Hatch correctly but then it's still using the standard hotkeys.
So my question is, how to I switch Select Hatch (TownCamera) while keeping grid hotkeys?
@trancey_ :

This should work for you I replaced Z by Y.

This thread is confusing/missleading for people who didn't read all the 6 pages.
You can't customize hotkeys for units/buildings/spell using this method yet.
You should edit the OP until we find a solution. I sent an e-mail to Blizzard support about this, I don't have much hope but they should be notified.
|
Thanks a lot for that thread !
Now i don't have to worry about anything, just have my little file.
Just to provide some example in case someone still have difficulties to make his own file, here's my config : + Show Spoiler +[Settings]
[Commands] TownCamera=F1 IdleWorker=W CameraSave0=Control+F2 CameraSave1=Control+F3 CameraSave2=Control+F4 CameraSave3=Control+F5 CameraSave4=Control+F6 CameraSave5=Control+F7 CameraSave6=Control+F8 CameraTurnLeft=Insert CameraTurnRight=Delete CameraView0=F2 CameraView1=F3 CameraView2=F4 CameraView3=F5 CameraView4=F6 CameraView5=F7 CameraView6=F8
I play Zerg of course, so now backspace "town camera" is on F1, and you select idle worker with W. Of course, now you can save some placement with F2-8. It works perfectly for me.
Again thanks a lot for the tips !

By the way are these 4 .txt files, the complete and unedited hotkey files you can extract from the MPQ or are there more? Those hotkeys are interface hotkeys. They're from enGB.sc2asets (I got them from ruRU.sc2assets), because it's from localization archives. I've renamed it to english
Its not illegal otherwise thousands upon thousands would of been banned by warden on WC3 for custom unit models/textures. Unless you are cheating blizzard does not care what you tweak. So, you can say, that replacing Queen's voice with Overmind's voice and replacing Raynor->Kerrigan loading screen is too legal?
|
Ok so the 4 lists of hotkeys you provided and that list with additional interface hotkeys are all the hotkeys that can be edited?
Do I just put them all in my personal_hotkeys.sc2hotkeys file and edit them and thats it?
|
There is no "legal" way to modify your hotkeys. Changing configuration files is not going to fly at a tournament. You must play the game the way Blizzard created it, unfortunately they didn't want us changing the keyboard setup so that's the way were going to have to play it.
edit:.. I'm pretty sure Blizzard posted recently at SC2.com that modifying or adding any files to the SC2 directory could result in a ban.

Above poster isn't very smart, me thinks.

iLLEGAL Change (edit, replace, etc) MPQ game archives Change (edit, replace, etc) any game files Edit game textures and other ingame files
Not prohibited Add your hotkey schemes over (OVER, not with replacing, only OVER priority) original game files.
If files, that aren't in MPQ have highter priority to read by game, we can use it. There are no game editing

Are you 100% on that, Existor? Is that actually confirmed by Blizzard, or is it 'just' not explicitly forbidden in the EULA?

oh come on guys enough of this. NOONE!, I repeat NOONE has been banned for customizing hotkeys by editing the MPQ file. The method explained in this thread seems to be the way Blizzard eventually will implement fully cuztomizable hotkeys, so a ban is is very unlikely.
Blizzard probably would prefer noone did any editing, no matter the method, before they give the go. Personally I think it's fine as it puts a little bit of pressure on Blizzard to get this done ( should have been done by launch imho, this is 2010).
|
Its legal by blizzard wording, but if you were to ask a GSL admin if you could do this, they would probably tell you to go fuck yourself. So do we go by what is kosher to blizzard or what is kosher to competetive SC? Mind you 99.9% of ppl here will never run into that issue, but still.

I see your point but I believe they can still ban you because it is a "modification".
Quote from Blizzard (http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/809157#blog):
"If a StarCraft II player is found to be cheating or using hacks or modifications in any form, then as outlined in our end user license agreement, that player can be permanently banned from the game."
So yeah it may be "legal" but I think they can still ban you. Someone tell me if I am wrong because I would like to use hotkeys if I do not risk getting banned =P

If it is not, this should be illegal in all forms. Your are adding methods to make the game easier for you, and easier then it is intended to be. This is not some sort of MMO or FPS and all of the hotkeys are where they are for a reason.
By adding these things your are essentially creating shortcuts for yourself, completely skewing the intended learning curve, and trying to advance faster then the people who play and learn legit.

Modifying your hotkeys in a way where they are more comfortable and convenient to you, thus giving you an edge, could very well be considered cheating.

OFC it is. Blizzard only cares about alterations that give an unfair advantage, hack or cheat the system. Custom skins, sounds, music, etc would all fall under harmless. If they hated the mod community or customizations in general there would be no galaxy editor.
Only the following would be ban worthy.
-Altering the game stat files (units, etc). Would be detected instantly, ban on the spot. -Memory Editing -Injection -Packet sniffing.
And anything else that would have an impact on the multiplayer (this includes online single player AKA achievements). You should keep a backup of any files you edit for when patches happen though, the game may refuse to update if a checksum does not match due to an edit.

That sounds so stupid. Different people use different hotkey settings. Some people might find Grid perfect for them and others might find it inconveniencing, in that situation what do you do? Do you just give the edge to the players who find the preset hotkeys more comfortable than any custom ones?
|
I'm pretty sure competitive console games let you change your controls as well as even pc competitive games (like Counterstrike), not sure why Starcraft competitive scene would be any different?
|
For me the clearest reason this is legal is that the file is placed in the documents folder, the folder blizz created for user settings and files, and not the actual game folder.

You are not modifying anything. This method adds a hotkey scheme. It does not change any original settings or modify any files.
No you will not get banned for this. Nor will you get banned for even editing the MPQ hotkey files which this does not do, but even if you did they do not ban people for changing hotkeys. It's a stupid to even suggest that they would ban anyone for such trivial matters of preference. They will ban people for turning off the in game music next?

i did this and it seems to be working well except for a few keys, my escape function seems to be unbound from cancel (i use grid), does anyone know how to fix this?
i'm also having trouble rebinding warp in using grid hotkeys, it seems to default to W, but when i rebind it using:
UI/Hotkey/WarpIn=3
it doesn't seem to work. do i have to manually unbind 3 from control group 3? i figured it might just be easier to have warp gates on 3 since i bind them there anyway.
|
This is AWESOME! Why this isn't supported ingame is just a mystery to me.
|
Don't know if this has been done yet but don't wanna read 8 pages of a thread.
As an ex-wow player, having control groups all the way up to 0 really sucks as I prefer to keep my left hand over the left side of the keyboard. Thanks to the OP, control groups 7-0 have now been remapped to F2-F5.
I made a notepad file as he described, called Fx Control Groups, put it in Documents/Starcraft II/Hotkeys and put the following text into it
+ Show Spoiler + [Settings]
[Commands]
ControlGroupAppend1=Shift+1 ControlGroupAppend2=Shift+2 ControlGroupAppend3=Shift+3 ControlGroupAppend4=Shift+4 ControlGroupAppend5=Shift+5 ControlGroupAppend6=Shift+6 ControlGroupAppend7=Shift+F2 ControlGroupAppend8=Shift+F3 ControlGroupAppend9=Shift+F4 ControlGroupAppend0=Shift+F5
ControlGroupAssign1=Control+1 ControlGroupAssign2=Control+2 ControlGroupAssign3=Control+3 ControlGroupAssign4=Control+4 ControlGroupAssign5=Control+5 ControlGroupAssign6=Control+6 ControlGroupAssign7=Control+F2 ControlGroupAssign8=Control+F3 ControlGroupAssign9=Control+F4 ControlGroupAssign0=Control+F5
ControlGroupRecall1=1 ControlGroupRecall2=2 ControlGroupRecall3=3 ControlGroupRecall4=4 ControlGroupRecall5=5 ControlGroupRecall6=6 ControlGroupRecall7=F2 ControlGroupRecall8=F3 ControlGroupRecall9=F4 ControlGroupRecall0=F5
I left F1 for wokers but you can easily include F1 as a control group by changing 6 with F1 in the above text.
You probably only need to include the F-key changes rather than every control group but it's convenient to have them in there if you want to change them around at any time.

This is legal by blizzards standards, but do you really think a league will let you copy this file in and use it at a tournament? Getting dependent on custom hotkeys at home may prevent you from becoming a champion.
|
I'm pretty sure the whole reason this "works" is because Blizzards library to read MPQ files incorporates the normal filesystem, i.e. if the game loads a file the library checks in the MPQ files and in the filesystem for that path. Not sure what has a higher priority now but way back in WoW it was possible to replace gamefiles this way. I silenced the footsteps of my horse mount (by putting empty WAV files in WoW's directory) and also changed the models of a few items I had. Eventually Blizzard changed the priority and if I'm not totally wrong there was even a blue post about this issue (not sure).
Long story short, even if you are not editing any gamefiles, you are still modifying the *game*, so be cautious.

I think when I added Suffix=_GLS (grid lefthand side) like in my above quote, escape for cancel started working again. Also, try just WarpIn=3 without the UI/Hotkey/

That's a good point but it's unlikely I'll ever enter proper tournaments and that's sure to be true for most of us.
However, if that changes, relearning a few hotkeys won't be that hard with a few weeks to prepare.

your abit naive you know. in beta, there was possiblity of much easly edit hotkeys with txt files, change unit sound without editing mpq, watch replays without loging onto bnet and they removed all these patch by patch in beta to not alllow YOU to modify anything. they do this on purpose so they can ban, while at the same time, they wont ban real cheaters, like you know 10 years of hacked ladder in sc1 and wc3 hacker galore. but live your dream
also another thing they locked, in wc3 u can make very big custom maps in filesize, now in sc2 good luck cause its locked to like 10 mb. so you have the powerfull editor, but all you can do is simple tower defence games and the like. so i really doubt they will ever allow something like editing hotkeys.

Look, this is a non-issue. It's not happening anyway. If you're good, you (the general "you, not the specific) might end up playing and winning some online tournaments. You're not going to the GSL. Now I'm not gonna comb through this thread to make sure an actual progamer posted here, but I am damn confident in saying that no one in this thread is going to be competing in a live tournament.
The argument of "You have to get used to default hotkeys because otherwise you won't be Flash" is ridiculous. It's not happening either way.

Just to let you know, i postet in German Forums about changing Hotkeys in the way with editing the MPQ, which was open and unresponded for like a month (or more).
http://eu.battle.net/sc2/de/forum/topic/441826448?page=5
Now its "closed" with the blue post:
Name = Ulvareth "Das Modifizieren von Spieldateien oder Archiven verstößt gegen die EULA und kann Grund für temporäre oder permanente Accountsperren sein."
translation by me:
"The modification of game data or archives is against the EULA and can be a reason for a temporary or permanent account banning."
I also posted the "new" way thats discripred here, and the Thread is "removed" without any word (links to it don't work anymore aswell).
Ofcourse Blizzard cares nothing about any complains about removed threads / posts and theirs no way to really contact the blue post guy about it or ask anything directly.
So as it seems, Blizzard (or just this one blue one) doesnt agree its legal and they just stop it ice cold.
Seems Blizzard just wants to keep the Community sucking, they just get me more and more angry about the actions they make, while the game is cool, battlenet and the overall "community" managment is horrible bad.

Just continue to read my post before answering.
As i said this one has a "reason" to get closed, while the reason is kinda "gray" (as it doesnt damage anything) , the "OTHER" thread that has the exact way of "THIS" new way is just removed, not just closed with an blue post, its just "removed" entirely.
So somehow that makes me think that the MPQ editing is "less" evil than the new way, at least by the respond of the blue post, which is very annoying ...
Ok just that you can read the "removed" Thread :
http://www.elitepvpers.de/forum/starcraft-2/750076-howto-hotkeys-ndern-neu-eigenes-layout.html
I also posted it at the elitepvp forum as an exact copy.
Its in german, and it is exactly the method that is used here.
And exactly "that" thread got just removed at the German Blizzard Forum without any respons.

Anyone able to answer my question at all?
Where do I find the original hotkeys? As per the op's instructions:
[you can put your hotkeys from original hotkey file]
The only hotkey I want to change is from 'A' for attack to something more left hand friendly, without changing a lot of other keys which happens if I use Blizzards leftie profile.

Can someone upload a hotkeyfile with enGB gridkeys and with Warpin on "Z" instead of "Y" pls

Any blue is always going to say this, it's the official line. Regardless of that people do not get banned for using custom hotkeys.
There are thousands of people using different hotkeys who are not being banned. That would be a lot of angry games if they did start banning for it.

If custom hotkeys were intended, they would be in the game. It is really simple as that. We are all forced to use these keys and many are sad that we can barely reach F8. Those who can skillfully and accurately hit F8 are better than us.

I didn't see any post replying to you, but apologies to all if this has already been answered.
The problem is that blizzard translates certain keys from QWERTY to your local keyboard layout. But not all. All of the grid command keys are translated. But WarpIn is not. I ran into this problem since I use dvorak. Because the Y in the lower left of your keyboard is seen as a localized variation from QWERTY it is being translated to Z for the grid, masking your warp. Try changing the CommandButton10 line to be CommandButton10=Z
SC2 will translate this to be Y, which for you is in the lower left where you probably want it. And it wont mask WarpIn which will actually be on Z for real.
Hope that works for you.

Shouldn't a mod flag this as unsafe since Blizzard has commentated that using this method to change hotkeys is a banable offense?
|
So is this legal or not?
I guess, if anything, this would fall under here:
+ Show Spoiler +Unapproved Third Party Software
A third party program is any file or program that is not a part of the StarCraft II software, but is used to gain an advantage in the game, such as increasing your resource gathering rate or map visibility. It also includes any programs that obtain information from the game that is not normally available to the regular player or that transmit or modify any of the game files. Any external applications that are used in conjunction with StarCraft II can cause quite a few unwanted side effects. Some of the major possible results of the use of third party programs can be instability of the game to the point that a player "crashes" from the game quite often. External programs can also be used to transmit viruses, spyware, and other unwanted programs into a player's computer. Third party programs can also be used to obtain information from the player's computer, such as account, password, and personal information.
If a player is found to have used such a program, he/she may:
Be temporarily suspended from the game Have further action taken, up to and including account closure, based on the intent of the program.
Since this doesn't transmits or sends any inquiries, nor does it make your opponent crash, or lets you gain an unfair advantage - pressing a key is pressing a key, it's just a matter of preference what key you wish to press. I guess it should be legit. An official answer link would put my mind at ease completely though.

It helps to give a link. I believe you are talking about this thread: http://eu.battle.net/sc2/de/forum/topic/441826448
In that thread somebody suggested editing the MPQ files which obviously violates Blizzard's terms, no surprise there.

The fact that StarCraft II looks for a folder called "Hotkeys" in your player data directory, the directory where your replays and savegames are stored, pretty much makes this an official though undocumented option.
Edit: Dustin Browder (StarCraft II Lead Designer) said in April this is allowed:
Day[9] w/ Dustin Browser informal interview:UI/Hotkey adjustments: They are not planning on having a fully customizable UI but they will have customized hotkeys. For advanced players, they can even open a textfile and edit each individual hotkey.Source: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=121072
This quote didn't make much sense back when the only known method of hotkey editing required MPQ tampering, but with the .SC2Hotkeys config files, this suddenly makes a lot more sense.
|
This is similar to counter strike configs file and definitely should be allowed in tournaments.
|
On September 22 2010 17:12 pres.sure wrote: Can someone upload a hotkeyfile with enGB gridkeys and with Warpin on "Z" instead of "Y" pls
Fixed Grid hotkeys for enGB client, QWERTY layout:
http://rapidshare.com/files/423118656/Grid_Fixed.SC2Hotkeys
Fixed Grid hotkeys for enGB client, QWERTZ layout:
http://rapidshare.com/files/423118643/Grid_German.SC2Hotkeys
(For those who don't know, the enGB client defines Command Button 0,2 and WarpIn both as Y, making playing Protoss impossible.)
Note that I created the whole keyset with all keys in the same order as they appear in the menu, so these files should be a great starting point if you want to create your own key config based on the grid keys.
Installation is pretty much the same as with replays. Create a folder under My Documents/StarCraft II/ called Hotkeys. Put the file in there. Start the game and select the new key layout from the menu.
Edit: Ok, I had to fix them a couple of times, please let me know if it works with QWERTY correctly.

Hello,
The thing is, I do not modify anything. I add another scheme through a completely new file. When I choose the new hotkeys they aren't from the old scheme, it's a totally new scheme option that gets added to the list. And since (as it says in the link) Starcraft 2 supports the Hotkeys folder, I'm guessing that this feature will be added in the future anyway. Hopefully you've actually read the post on the link...

I wouldn't count one random Blizzard technician saying it is ok to mean it is legit. A different person could view it as cheating and ban you.
Until the president of Blizzard says that this is an intended feature, I would consider it banable. It's the same thing for the SC2 z-boards people were using to macro certain things and some people got banned and some wouldn't.
They made it so you can't change hotkeys in-game, so TBH I wouldn't consider this a safe thing to do because it feels like it is unintended. All they have to do is change warden to scan for this extra file and boom you're banned.

Then don't use it, what problems?
Is there any chances for cheating with this method? Remember, you can't add 2 or more hotkeys to ONE button. Remember, that you can't change non-interface hotkeys.
And MAIN reason, why it's legal. SC2-game reading files from this folder by default. With this screenshot we can see, that SC2-game every game start will find any files in HoTS and LotV folders (that are clear now). With this Process Manager we also can see, that SC2 reading file from unexisted folder with name "Hotkeys"
So why it's legal.

Wrote me please any advatanges, that players will have from changing... err, ADDING (there are no game resource editing, if you don't see) another hotkey schemes.
WIth your state, I can say, that "Grid" will give GIANT (!!!!) advatange for players VS players, who're using standart or classic schemes. Why? All hotkeys under left hand, you're not need to move your left hand over keyboard for some units/buildings/abilities, because all hotkeys under left hand.
And another thing that is not classified as "game file editing" or "cheating/illegal/hack programms", that are aditional buttons for mouse, that you can click with ONE finger! And there no "50 commands under one button", there only as example "Backspace" and "Select larva" ability for 2 buttons under big finger (sorry for my english). ANd game will classify it, that I've clicking "Backspace" and "X" (for Grid hotkey set).
Who knows, maybe some guys have cool keyboards, that have doubled "Backspace" button for left side? They must be banned too?
I mean, this game-keyboard.

My post was updated with more reasons, why Blizzards will be retarded, if they will ban players for changing INTERFACE (that are ONLY in hotkey schemes, but not ingame) hotkeys.
Man, I wanna be a CSR/TSR for blizzard Then ask to technical support with e-mail, omg. What problem?

I've tried "Tilde" but it doesn't work.
edit: It's Towncamera=Grave

I haven't seen examples of Mouse button 1-5 in these files yet, I was hoping to use button 4 for Towncenter.

So can I use this to swap the A and T keys in grid layout? (Making A attack like it has been for 15 years) and finally stop hacking my own MPQ files in order to get a basic feature that exists in every PC game published in the past 6 years (except for this one).

Yes, you can. But how you can use function under real "A" button, if atack is on new "A" button?
For me:
Q - move to position (not used) W - Wait aka Stop E - hold position R - patrol T - atack

Does anyone know what folder this is on mac? it doesn't seem to recognize it in documents/SCII or Libray/...../Hotkeys

i just use the standard grid layout and i'm totally fine with that but i guess it's pretty useful to many other people and would be way better if blizzard told that earlier... but i guess it doesn't matter anyway since it is confirmed that the 1.2 patch will include ingame hotkey-costumation...

Useless bump, we are on 1.1.3, not 1.2.x.
I've been using sc1 style f2-f4 for months now, couldn't be happier.

yeah man...you should've read the patchlog a lil bit better it's just 1.1.3 and not 1.2... would've been strange if this should've been the 1.2 patch with not really that much changes and (if i'm not totally wrong) more than a month earlier...

I have a little problem here, is anyone could tell me how to call the key "²" just before the "1" hey on EU keyboard ( azerty ) ?
I tried Tilde but it's not working. I made a few research and Tilde ( ~ ) is on an other key on my keyboard. Here i have a "²" and a small N.
I also check the command line with other key, it worked, so it's clearly the "name" of the key which is wrong.
Edit : I tried "Grave" to, but it's not working either, the grave key is next to my enter key on that EU keyboard. :/
Edit again : I finally found it, if someone need it it's "Apostrophe".

this has worked for me for two months and today It just stopped working for seemingly no reason.
any ideas?

I had the grid setup except I use a dvorak keyboard, and the grid setup puts the warpgate key on the same key as attack, so I couldn't play random anymore.
oddly enough the hotkey file I wound up using reassigned everything to the qwerty layout for grid, but somehow worked with my dvorak key layout ( I guess sc2 uses the qwerty names for raw positional keyboard data? I'm at a loss for how this works, or why it would suddenly stop)

Can you "create" new hotkeys? For instance make a hotkey for burrow and one for unburrow, to allow easier management of burrowed units.

You can change with this legal method only hotkeys, that are in based hotkeys schemes. SO mostly it's actual for remapping camera views and remapping Backspace to Tilde (Grave), and maybe some other hotkeys, but not race specific hotkeys

Okay, so either i'm dumb or my computers dumb... or the guide is wrong
So, i made the notepad thing, saved it, went to make the folder (documents/starcraft II/) And where it SAYS in the guide there should be a hotkey folder, so, naturally, as it says, i make one (documents/starcraft II/Hotkeys/)
Inside i place the Malpractice.sc2hotkeys file i made from the beginning (which, btw, still denotes the 'type' as a 'text document', is this supposed to be the case?)
And i reload Sc2... Check menu, hotkeys... Nothing is there >.<
Can anyone help me with this, or show me where to go to do so?
Also, when i downloaded that file, its just a sc2hotkeys file which i cant open w/whats on my computer (and searching web cant...) and a folder w/some text docs showing the starting hotkeys, so i assume its just for reference?
And if i wanted to use ~ instead of backspace for next hatch, is that 'tilde' or 'grave' on US keyboards?
|
I don't think you should allow it it was even harder hotkey setups in BW but that's a part of the skill set needed to master something that you ahven't set up your self.

Malpractice.248
Make sure your OS is set to display extensions for all file types. It sounds like you've named the file as Malpractice.sc2hotkeys but it still has a hidden .txt extension.

okay so youre right, i did check its properties (dunno how to make OS show extension) and it IS a .txt file... How do i change that to a .sc2hotkey file//edit the one in the DL? given i cant open it
I wish someone would just edit one to grid, make the ~ = next hatch (backspace currently) and post it so i can download, drag and drop.. lol
Cuz, yea, i cant figure out how to edit/make sc2hotkey files Only wanted to do grid + change the next hatch to ~ :p

Im using WinXP but most stuff should be same or similar. Open up any folder, and on the top click Tools>Folder Options. Under the "View" tab, find something like "Hide file extensions for known filetypes", and uncheck the checkbox. After that it should show your file as Malpractice.sc2hotkey.txt, just rename it and remove the .txt from the end.
To open the files the sc2hotkey files you need to right click on the file and select "Open with..." (or just open if it isnt there, and "select program from list"), and just find notepad in the list and open it.
E: Actually you can create a real .sc2hotkey file without showing extensions if you open your .txt file in Notepad, choose "Save As..." and at the bottom there should be a dropdown menu where it says "Text Documents". Change this to "All files", and save it as Malpractice.sc2hotkey. This way it wont add the hidden .txt at the end.

Okay, so i'm very fond of this hot key changing thing.. I got it down, and know how to edit the hot keys now, thanks alot OP!
Now, my question is this:
I wanna change the key i put my units in group with to the "Tilde" Key (The key to the left of "1") My problem is, when i type in Tilde instead of Control, nothing changes in the configuration in-game, its still set at Control..
Anyone know what i should type in to change this?

Think the Danish keyboard is pretty much same as the Finnish, and assume your key is §. Dont think there is a way to hotkey anything to it atm, since blizz would need to add the name of it to the list of avalable keys, and since its quite rare to have this button I dont think its there.

Thats why you're need to download those txt files, where you can "Search" text "Backspace", copy it to your scheme and change to Grave (as example)
It's original TownCamera=Backspace
You must change it to
TownCamera=Grave
since blizz would need to add the name of it to the list of avalable keys Read first post again, please
and open GameHotkeys_UI (or UI2, no difference, both files are fully same). There are all hotkeys, that you can change
|
Actually, it's not necessary grave for all key board. It can be Tidle, or even Apostrophe and probably some other.
But, a good way to know how starcraft 2 is considering the key is to bind a short cut to put your mic' on in the game option. Just choose push to talk, assign the key you want to know the ID and here you go.

Okay, I've tried all kinds of combinations, and I can't for the love of god, change my control key to the "Tilde" key..
I can change it to alot of other stuff, but when i put in "Tilde" nothing really happends.. I tried Putting in "Tilde (Grave)" as that is how SC2 names the button, but still no effect..
I'm gonna try the thing with renaming my Push to talk key, and see what i get in result..
If anyone has any experience with using the "Tilde" or "Grave" key (Or what ever you wanna call it, the one to the left of "1") as a hotkey, please do post the line of your .sc2hotkeys - It would help me alot, and probably save me a bit of time finding out..
Thanks in advance,
Jesper

Maybe my post wasn't clear...I wish i was more confident in my English to say : "Recommend you read my post AGAIN"
I actually don't have any issue at all, but again on my keyboard, SC2 doesn't use "Grave" or "Tilde", it's "Apostrophe". I did read that topic a lot before figure it out, and there was no clue about that ID. So i gave a method that worked for me to get how SC2 was using that particular key ( and thanks, i know that list, but how am i supposed to guess it was Apostrophe ? I should try every ID ? ).
@ jelle or Jesper : Here's my custom hotkey files, hope it helps. The good thing is, you'll be able to change that with the upcoming patch.
[Settings]
[Commands] TownCamera=F1 IdleWorker=W CameraSave0=Control+F2 CameraSave1=Control+F3 CameraSave2=Control+F4 CameraSave3=Control+F5 CameraSave4=Control+F6 CameraSave5=Control+F7 CameraSave6=Control+F8 CameraTurnLeft=Insert CameraTurnRight=Delete CameraView0=F2 CameraView1=F3 CameraView2=F4 CameraView3=F5 CameraView4=F6 CameraView5=F7 CameraView6=F8 ControlGroupAssign0=Control+Apostrophe ControlGroupAppend0=Shift+Apostrophe ControlGroupRecall0=Apostrophe
Note that my town camera is on F1, but i'm using the "tilde" key ( call it whatever you want ^^ ) as a control group.

So, how do we do that now that 1.2 is out?
I have the following modifications:

That hotkey scheme won't work with 1.2, you either need it based off Grid or Default, not both the way you wrote there.
What you can to is create a default-based hotkey scheme and change all the hotkeys to fit the grid.
|
Russian Federation4295 Posts
You can save grid and edit it in notepad
|
How do I do that?
What you can to is create a default-based hotkey scheme and change all the hotkeys to fit the grid. Yeah, but that's a lot of work, and it won't work in custom maps rendering the whole concept of grid layout pointless.
|
So, I found out that now you can load the hotkeys to battle.net from C:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\StarCraft II\Accounts\[ABunchOfNumbers]\Hotkeys. Problem : my custom layout doesn't work anymore - the grid hotkeys are ignored, even when you add AllowSetConflicts=1.
Any way to solve this problem?
|
For anyone who wants the edited file I made (which works) just simply go to this link, enter captcha code, download the file... place it into your hotkey folder, then load it in game.
http://j.mp/qQAngE
It's basically the normal grid hotkeys with a few tweaks: A=Attack Zerg/Protoss unit spells are Q,W,E Burrow/Unburrow is R Other unit functions (patrol, etc) are the standard hotkey Build/Advance-Build is Q/W Load/Unload is E,R
You can always edit/add a few of these if you want, but I find this setup is VERY helpful. I do not play Terran so nothing has been edited for them. I hope you guys find this helpful as it took me a LONG TIME to figure the proper commands out etc.
Here is the link to DL the hotkey file: http://j.mp/qQAngE
|
I used a program called keytweak to change things that sc2 wouldn't let me change. Basically the program changes how ur computer reads a certain key press, so for instance you can make your computer think you pressed the caps lock button when really you pressed the tab button etc.
OP's way sounds better but thats just what i did to change a few things mainly for control groups.
