Q: What should I be posting about? A: Basically, anything you want to talk about but aren't sure if it warrants a topic of its own. Heard a rumour you want to share? A new video? A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching? A brilliant new idea that you want to vet, to make sure it's really as brilliant as you think it is?
This is the place.
Note: Posting standards will not be as high as if you were to make a new thread, but pointless spam will still not be tolerated. I have seen threads like these work out alright on other sites (for other games) so I figured, why not give it a shot? It's possible there's not really enough content for something like this to exist at this point in time, but no harm then, it will just die on its own.
Now my opinion to share: based on the changes currently being tested on the PTR and plans for patch 1.2.0 i do see a nice performance improvement for Protoss and im not against it (faster Void Rays make me have nightmares every night but ok), what worries me is infestors not being able to fungal growth air units. Not saying you shouldn't watch pro replays, but if you're bronze then maybe you should just get the basics sorted out first. You cant copy their strategies anyways. At bronze - gold, only macro matters, so get good at that first
But if you're just watching for the fun of it then go ahead It's just that so many bronze/silver players focus way too much on cute stuff and strategies instead of just the basics.
I love the new Protoss two-stargate play we've been seeing in the GSL!
Without spoiling the games by telling the ending, I will say that oGsMC, HongUnPrime, and ChoyafOu have been dropping some pretty awesome builds. I still hit Colossus/Stalker mostly on the NA servers, but I'm hoping things will change. Incorporating the stargate really helps get some good scouting pre-observer, forces a bit of anti-air (or keeps T in his base a bit longer and delays the MM timing), and, best of all, it's not a dead-end build because voids can cleverly be incorporated into a stalker timing push.
Still have yet to see how it plays out in the lategame, but it's great to finally have a build that allows a bit of early game aggression and harass.
I dont like the new Stargate play in ZvP it just seems so hard to deal with as Zerg since hydralisks gets so badly owned by Storm and Colossi. and muta / corruptor is so gas intensive
friends of nexgenius probably say that. minchul is the best
Yourself and Tester are my favorite Toss players to watch, I will add minchul to my "to watch" list as I've never heard that name. No offense to him, I'm just not overly knowledgeable about all the players.
Who else for Protoss?
Actually what I'd love to know is who to watch that I could try and emulate to get myself past Platinum. I feel so predictable. Nobody is surprised to see Colossi.

I don't know if you've been watching the GSL, but there are some sweet stargate builds floating around that work really well, and don't rely on colossi. GuineaPig got beaten because he was greedy and didn't build anything other than probes until 34 supply, but the Protoss that made the Ro8 all have been using builds that did not rely on colossus. They may transition into them, but you don't see any 2-base double robo colossus timing pushes anymore. Thank god.
I'm pretty late to the boat on this but someone told me a while back that TLO was going Hydra / Queen vs protoss at a recent enough event (not sure which).
I'm not sure if they were telling the truth or not but if these games exist I'm interested in watching them. Anyone know what the score is ?
Hey Jinro, wtf was with PoltPrime suiciding his tanks into you in g2 of your match? It looked...uncharacteristic of a top player, to say the least, and I must confess when I first saw it my gut reaction was, "OMG he just took a dive."
I won't ask you to speculate on that last part, but were you as shocked as I was by that particular tank push?
Out of curiousity, have Terran or Protoss actually been complaining about Fungal Growth? I usually see them complain about different things like mutas or banelings and I feel like the 1.2 change just came out of left field.
Gold level Terran here, I'm having a lot of trouble sticking to a build.
I'm mainly and almost completely focusing on my macro game right now and I want a solid build I can do pretty much every time unless I have a specific gameplan in my head that requires something else. Should I just go with 111 and get very very familiar with it?
HollowLord: T here, fungal on ground and banelings is tough to deal with, though not really imbalanced. I have no idea why they nerfed it against air.
Jambi: You should have a build for each MU. Liquipedia has a bunch, and you can look at pro replays for a style you like.
Generally, I look for builds that give me a strong midgame boost rather than trying to win early, because that's the style I prefer playing. I do a lot of 1rax or 2rax FEing, which requires being able to withstand 1base baneling builds, 4gates, etc. It's tough, but after a while, you'll end up being a better player.

Well fungal pretty much disables terran drops and protoss pheonix play, but I still think the fungal change was unnecessary and pretty retarded (psi storm hits air as excuse).

I think they should just change fungal growth to plague. take away the movement effect but increase the damage a bit.

I'm a random player and I've been complaining about FG. Stupid change, good thing its in the test phase and not yet implemented. I hope blizzard see what a big mistake that really is.
I couldn't care less about the Phoenix change because Protoss is my best race but I think the change was unnecessary.
VR change seems a bit weak to me. It'll only add +2 damage uncharged and +3 damage charged. I prefere that Blizzard makes it a 50% damage increase to massive (pre-nerf damage)
pressing additional keys is stupid because Zerg needs to press the most keys since their units are the weakest. I really hope blizzard doesn't go through with this.
I can't wait for chat channels and customizable hotkeys, though.
SCV repair change was a VERY EXTREMELY FANTASTIC change good. No more indestructible PF.
I think reapers need a time buff more than bunkers.
I support the pylon change because small units used to be able to move through pylons in SC1. I don't know what happened in SC2. And, if they want to wall off, it'll require 3 pylons, which I think is fair. and 2 pylons + forge will still work. (and I'm often a doofus and I trap my probes in between pylons, lol.
Hallucination build time change was unnecessary, but I'm not complaining.
I like the observer change but I don't know if its balanced.
I was very disappointed to see no hydra speed research, no tank damage increase vs armored, and no Archon buff

I'm a bronze-level Terran; is there any sort of vaguely-definitive reference on exactly what 'the basics' entails? I've tried a 3-rax build the last few games and I seem to be getting owned by banelings and tanks...

Not sure if it's the right approach, but it's fun :D
work on your macro, scouting and do 3 gate expands would be my advice. but don't try funky stuff until you're high diamond, that's when you should be good enough to try out funky stuff and be able to understand what went wrong/right and make the strategies solid from that info.

to be honest, i'm worried about the fungal growth change too, its already a waay underused ability.. and a underused unit over all, what it is good for is locking down muta balls, and killing smaller units (marines, banelings and zerglings)... but without the ability to hit air units i'm afraid ZvZ will be basically dead.. just mass ling/bane/muta, roach/muta or roach/bane/muta.. since the hydra might be better in combat headon they can't keep up with the movement speed of mutalisks really hope blizzard realise that..

I know where you are coming from about the 4 gate, but remember this: Its a good build to use once in a while to make sure you CAN execute it well. its something you can fallback on because it is a strong build to exploit early vulnerabilities in tech builds.
I dont 4 gate almost at all, but ill throw it in occasionally.
Would a sort of colossus feign PvZ work? Into heavy stalker (blink probably).
My line of thinking is: I'm not too satisfied with stargate builds right now with zergs playing the July response as seen in July vs. MC (which I don't think even the new patch affects much, I've been playing some on the PTR), and going too heavily into colossus seems to be death unless you do a 1 punch knockout, but that's because zerg reacts very heavily to that.
So if you show robo bay, I've noticed 3 main zerg responses, one to go muta centric which you should already be pretty ok with fighting, two to stay on the back foot with a ground composition until they build up corruptors which should allow expanding for you and such, abusing their mindset three to go aggressive push before your colossus number comes up, which without actually investing in building the colossi and instead having gateway infrastructure should defend this I would think. Or if they don't respond much (you should have the scouting with the robo) then you can build some colossi. And it gives the infrastructure for immortals as well if they go only roach.
2nd question: Are there any PvP builds that don't fit into a common rock paper scissors blatant build order loss scenario? It seems like every build where you decide a tech has serious trouble with another common choice. Investing in mass stalker loses so easily to robo builds, investing in robo loses so easily to stargate builds, investing in stargate loses so easily to stalker builds, I've never seen a game that made a DT opening look stable in PvP. The closest to me seems like a passive 2 gate robo which can really go any tech direction from there on reaction and can in many circumstances defend 4 gates, but doesn't an early expansion abuse that? But then early expansions get destroyed by any of the previous builds played aggressively.
ok i posted this bra in a wrong section, so i try it here again:
Hey, the last few weeks/month i noticed that every toss in the world is going strait to a colossi build, because i'm bad with sentries/apm and everything ( i'm just a platin level player), i worked on a way of countering colossi without building more colossi than your opponent. Instead i'm going to a carrier build.
I got the idea after watching the day[9] funday monday concerning carriers... building a carrier before first expo etc.
Actually... no joke i won since then almost every single toss game. Yes you are vulnerable against early pushes etc. same as you would be with a fast colossi tech.
I think that carriers are still underused and their value is not yet seen by most people. E.g. the damage is insane... with + 1 a carrier has 12 damage per interceptor with an insane range.
Some people said... just build blink stalkers.. but actuall that doesn't work against this strat very welll because i add first lots, later with speed to my army...
I'm platinum about to break into diamond, and only play zerg. However, I've recently tried to break out into other races and this is where my question comes in. I use hotkeys, however - I find that while playing terran or protoss- I need more hotkeys than required. So i do what i see other players do, put all their barracks on one hot key. I find this very difficult however, because I do not know how to produce out of all these with just 1 hotkey. How do you keep from building a marine instead of a maurauder? I was thinking that there was a way to select 1 barracks and go to the next one and next one in the same hotkey. Is there a way to individually select each barracks/gateway under one hotkey?
Pay attention to this that im gonna tell you, because it hasn't yet be mentioned.
When a skill is not researched for a unit, it appears at bottom right greyed, it doesn't matter if its Passive or if it needs to be activated by the player. (example: charge/stym)
So, colossus should have the thermal lance upgrade at the bottom right when they're selected, and display greyed when its not upgraded, there is no reason to not put it there. It becomes cucial as game goes long to know if u have it done or not, even at the highest levels some players may forget to research it. Also colossus are such expensive units so i think that they should deffinetly have an icon of the passive Thermal Lance upgrade at the bottom right and display greyed whenever its not upgraded, then coulored when its already reasearche, just as the other units have.

only active skills are displayed so it's fine, blue flame, concussive shells, hydra's range, khaidarin crystal and so on are not displayed, so it should be not different from thermal lance
I wanted to make a thread, but i think I'll just post here. So is everyone fine with there being no real highground advantage besides sight? I love the game and think its great right now but i believe it would be even better if highround advantage were implemented. I remember many on TL were fighting for this but its seemed to have faded away now. I'm just curious as to how people feel about this, whether or not you believe this should exist on sc2 or whether u don't care for it anymore.

u can check colussi attack and u can see Range (its yellow so it stands out a little bit)
So I've had this bugging me for a bit. My usual build in ZvT is ling/bling/muta. But once the terran starts getting a bunch of marines and thors and maybe a couple tanks, it seems like ling/bling/muta gets directly countered. When I watch pro games though, the zerg player always seem to just stick with the same units and rely on their micro. If I don't feel as comfortable in getting into a good position for an attack, would transitioning into another unit comp be better, like maybe roach infestor? Or should I stick with ling/bling/muta?

Protoss Replays Regarding the earlier poster about good protoss players to watch you may want to check out GuineaPig and HongUnPrime as well. They don't seem to be as solid as say MinChul, but both are good players with some unique plays that are worth watching since Protoss don't have as many go to players. Also now that Huk is in Korea does he count? The latest TL weekly has his replay pack vs top Koreans.

minimizing is done on the left side bar. By each sub-forum there is a double arrow. you can click it to toggle the sections to collapse. this is saved with your profile so when you log in that section won't be visible.

Day Pass is only to watch high quality, you can watch SQ for free. At http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens3/live/ hit SQ stream or SQ live test (people say this one works better but you have to download an extra thing I think) when it comes on.

I just realized how incredibly stupid it is, that warpprism-speed and observer-speed are two different upgrades that respectively cost 100/100 - ridiculous to not make it a single upgrade, hell, even stimpack affects both marines and marauders and is like...a million times stronger upgrade.

Both would/will be more useful if we ever get some larger maps. I can only imagine how good warp prisms would be on BW sized maps.

It worries me though that with larger maps, Zerg strength increases. (A sweeping generalization, but you know what I mean.)

Yup.
I even tested a warpprism warp-in lately and realized, not only is it far slower/weaker but the prism also dies like twice as fast as a frickin pylon.
EDIT: now I just realized how incredibly underpowered protoss really is, there are basicly no protoss-players in diamond as you can see here from sc2ranks

Killing the probe doesn't seem like an option seeing that the opponent can glitch another probe up onto the high ground. Even if the opponent last scouts you still can't seem to get cannons up in time.

scout after pylon every time and if you see a forge/nothing at his base then you know there is a cannon rush coming. step 2 is to grab a probe at your base and waltz around the edges to look for his inevitable pylon/probe. Once discovered, grab half of your probes to go and kill stuff he's building, including the probe if you can, and start chronoboosting zealots. Why is a pylon block giving you trouble? how can he 'glitch' another probe into your base?

I can't put a face to the name like I can with just about every other SC2 progamer, and it's been bugging me a bit. I've searched and couldn't find anything.

The actual damage from mBL (25 I think ?) benefits from +air, and the damage from broodlings benefits from +ground. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but iirc that's the way it works.

Why? They are different units with different purposes. You're also comparing them to a different race with different units with different purposes.
Using your style of argument you can complain about absolutely anything in the game.
Idra has recently in his interview stated that he would like to see a nerf to the DPS of marines. While I don't disagree that marines are a bit too strong in the early game, they are our only staple AA unit and also the unit that we have to get in every match up, but they fucking suuuck late game. One fungal in the late game and 70% of T's army firepower is dead and Collossus / HT just fucking rape them so much. They are the reason are all ins are so strong and our late game is so fucking shitty. We are forced to making them because it's the only way to be ahead in the early game but then they get fucking raped by anything in the mid game, pure mech is sadly not viable, maybe if thors were more like goliaths everything would be good. My point is that while Idra is right that marines are too powerful early, he obviously doesn't see the effect what it would do to terrans late game. terran late game is considered (and rightfully so) the weakest late game in the game and nerfing marines even more without buffing anything else would completely destroy the game. The big problem is thors being so shitty. Maybe making thors more like goliaths + reverting tank damage to 50 vs non armored and nerfing marines would be a correct way how to nerf the all ins and buff the late game. Thoughts?
Hi Gentlemen, not sure if this is the right place to post, but was thinking that it may be of interest for all you protoss players out there who feel that if a mothership is dropped as a last resort, it damn well deserves a theme song. (inspired by HUK's original Epic last ditch go out with a bang effort at MLG)
You really shouldn't take everything idra says too seriously. hes a great player and a smart guy but very biased and says something should be rebalanced in every interview he has, and always saying that zerg is underpowered and things like that

Maybe you could make it so that through upgrades the marine got more powerful, but without those upgrades it wasnt quite as good as it is now? So lategame WITH upgrades it'd be pretty good (still just a marine though :D) and early game it wouldnt be quite as good. Just a thought.
Also, if anything tanks should be nerfed. TvT = tank/viking + bio. TvP = bio + tanks (sometimes) TvZ = tank/marine
These are the most popular strats for each matchup atm imo. Maybe in TvP tanks arent used as much, but more and more people tend to get them.
I hate tanks, never use them, and i dont want them to become some core unit that you need to win.

I'd say no. I try to get the ghosts out fast and just build up energy. Waiting for the upgrade takes too long and sometimes i wanna get cloak first aswell. Never really felt that I need 75 energy immediately. But it does sound kinda logical to get that upgrade first. Just a personal preference i guess.

TvT has always been around tanks and always will be around tanks. In TvZ we are forced into tanks because there is nothing else that kills so many units. Tanks are almost never used in TvP, because they are fucking terrible. Saying that you don't want tanks to become a core unit is ridiculous, that's like saying you don't want colossus to become a core unit, even in BW, tanks were used in every match up but not every style(SK terran comes to mind) If tanks are not a core unit, mech is not viable, which means we only have bio, air, and variations of bio mech. That's boring, imo, I would love to play some BW TvP. You probably just don't like tanks because you can't just stim and 1a... Tanks need to be buffed.

I usually play a hellion/thor/MM mix vs most of the races, i just dont like the way the tanks works. And by "core unit" i mean a unit that you almost have to build to win. I dont want the tank to be like that in every matchup.
Thors and hellions are great, but you arent forced to build them like i feel you sometimes are with tanks. Like in TvT. Probably the worst matchup to play of all time. Sort of fun to watch, but playing it makes me want to die. It's like a standoff between tanks and a battle of who can make the most vikings, it's ridiculous. Sure it's a great matcup because you can build almost anything you want, the only problem is, you still have to make tanks.
Also tanks are used in TvP very often. Dreamhack finals come to mind, and just about every 15min+ TvP i've seen lately has had tanks used.
Tanks are used in EVERY TvT. Tanks are used in maybe 90% of TvZ's. And tanks are also fairly common in TvP. To say they are "fucking terrible" and need to be buffed is just silly.
I'm a terran player and it wouldnt hurt me if terran was better (not that they need to be though ), but i dont want some super powerful unit dominating, i think a minor nerf to the tank dmg, and a buff to hp/armor might be a good thing. But ofc i hate tanks, i guess if you love tanks you might think otherwise
Not quite true. Sometimes, I go pure bio and it works well if I'm able to execute it correctly and hit the right timings. Tanks are only decent in some sort of anti collossus / blink / whatever first tech timing push, but I don't see them replacing mmm at this rate. Chargelots are simply way too good against them. Against Z we have to get tanks because the match up is impossible without them. Literally.
anyone remembers testers name? i can't find any replays of him on sc2rep.com if someone could link me to a few recent replays i'd be mighty greatful. i saw him get matched vs huk on the ladder the other night and his pvp is absolutely amazing. never been so impressed at how pvp should look

friends of nexgenius probably say that. minchul is the best
But... but... 88iNControl!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try out some Immortal/stalker/Templar in PvZ, or some Zealot stalker sentry immortal in PvT, as long as you get twilight upgrades and have good sentry micro Colossi are a mere formality!
is it better to spawn creep tumours with your first queen? especially on maps like delta and scrap where your natural is so far away, you're not gonna use all that larva at the first go UNLESS he goes for early pressure, so if you spawn a creep tumour at your first go, you'll be put behind if early pressure comes and you don't have the larva to spend on units

I like to spawn larvae with the first 25 energy, then make a creep tumor next, then larvae again. The creep tumor will connect the bases fast, especially if you make a creep tumor with your 2nd queen at your natural.
Curious if anyone knows: Is the ladder reset going to be coming soon? I thought it was going to come at the end of the year along with a patch. Is it coming out in Janurary(or later) instead?
Not sure when the ladder reset is coming. Just wish that Blizzard was more open to communication to its community. On that note:
Anyone feel that Blizzard has been lackluster in the way it communicates with its community. I really want to put it on a higher standard and compare it to Bungie. Now I don't like Halo all that much, not like Starcraft, but I really envy how much Bungie caters to the community in terms of Bungie.net features (stats galore and render replays to HD/SD) and the amount of fan service it puts in its games. It really sticks around for it games (look at the love they gave to Halo 2 - when it went down, it said that anyone who plays Halo 2 on that day will get a special medal etc. in Reach). Really just see how Bungie deals with its fans. Not to say that Blizzard doesn't do a good job. It does an excellent one. BUT IT SHOULD DO BETTER.
Lovin' mirror matchups! I play as random, and most of the games I win are mirror matchups. I guess that's mainly due to my lack of understanding off-race matches. At least with mirrors, you know what your opponent is capable of. ZvZ is a bit trickier though, as you have to play blind.
zvz is actually my favorite matchup atm, in general you have to withstand far less abuse than zvt/zvp and the games are actually longer in a lot of circumstances, at least at my level of play ive had a fair few 3-4 base macro zvz's where almost all zerg units see some play on the field, as opposed to incessant 2rax and 4gate respectively from the other two races (i'm 1.3k diamond, so thats all anyone does). theres something truly awesome about having the entire map covered in creep from two opposing teams.

If you didn't know, if a roach or hydra is directly next to a unit and attacks it, it will do a melee animation rather than spraying acid or shooting a dart.

The melee animation doesn't count as ranged which is a known bug I believe. Don't know if they will ever fix it though.

It is not a bug, it is a feature! Or does it make any difference whether it is ranged or melee?
I'm curious what you guys think of the use of planetary fortesses as actual static defense in certain places on the map. Set one up at a choke point and it seems to me you have a very nice high HP blocker. I'm wondering what you guys think of it's use at a competitive level.
Also, could a viable cheesy planetary fortress + medivac drop , into someone's base be worked out :D.

Not very effective IMO. The lack of any AA associated with it means that 550 mins + 150 gas could be better spent elsewhere. Especially if you lose the CC during production or while the PF is morphing. It's been tried, and in some cases effective, but overall I would have to discourage it.
In regards to a PF as an offensive unit, I highly doubt you would have the time to let it complete. And if it doesn't, that's a huge sinkhole for your minerals. Imagine, that's 8 more SCV's you could have produced, or even more units you could have added to your army to attack instantly rather than after a huge morph time.

Yeah early game ZvZ is pretty annoying considering its almost rock-paper-scissors and you have to play blind.
Hope it's OK to post here since I didn't find any thread for January.
I was just wondering if there has been any word about watching replays with other friends? This is something I really miss, and would be great for all the casters out there too.
