Having a true toggle (like the ALT+F type toggle for colors) for HP bars would be extremely beneficial to players, analysts, spectators, and commentators. Everyone's favortie guy Day[9] even mentioned a while back in a daily that it was very hard for him to "parse" all the hp bars. So I know I'm not alone in this.
Players have to use HP bars the majority of the time, but situations arise where you need to see the units without the clutter. Like in FF at ramp situations, late game mass army battles, ling vs. baneling, marine micro vs. baneling, etc. The current ALT toggle is only temporary, and is not practical when you have a split second to cast FF, avoid a baneling, etc.
When watching videos or the GSL, there are plenty of times when turning HP bars on for a while or off for a while make a lot of sense just for ease of viewing.
Why is this not a true toggle option? So I thought it was too late for this, but Blizz is still making major improvements to UI. I would love to see this addition!

This feature is long overdue, hope to see it happen as well as the ability to lock that dumb right on control group button.
Maybe I'm wrong, but can't you do that (as a spectator/watching replays) when you press "H"?
You can press and hold ALT to turn them off when you need to...
I would love this actually, but I've played with them both on and off.
Perhaps if you have ranged vs ranged armies it's good but as I play zerg it turns into a huge mess whenever I engage so it's just not worth it.

yes indeed. feature needs to be added. I honestly dont think its that difficult to incorporate, just need more steam and support.

I'm pretty sure he's disagreeing with the poll and saying you don't need a true toggle.... maybe you should read. Not everyone has to agree with the OP, especially if it gives you the option not to.

It's not good enough, IMO.
What happens if you want to press ALT to turn off HP bars to see zerglings at your ramp more clearly, then you press F to cast forcefield? Did you just change team colors and not cast a spell? You also don't really have time to press ALT considering you can easily miss the FF even without an extra button to press. It is no surprise players just make due and look at flying HP bars instead of the actual zerglings to approximate... but I'm pretty sure if there was a true toggle a lot of players would turn it off when a ramp break was a possibility. I mean you really don't care if the lings are at 10 HP or 35 HP when there are 30 of them at your front door. But you do definitely care exactly where they are.
If you are a commentator/analyst, should you be expected to hold down ALT for 20 seconds at a time in a huge end game battle with lots of flying units over ground units where basically nothing is visible... wouldn't it be nice to turn off HP bars for 10 seconds to see what is what? Should you constantly flip between HP bars and not (ugly)? What if you need to click on the minimap... now you have to let go of ALT... then press it again a split second later when you go back to the battle, etc. It's just very cumbersome.

What I would love to see is an option to show healthbars only on units and structures that aren't at 100% life.

I agree with that. I've been trying to think of disadvantages for this implementation but I simply can't.
Health bars should slowly fade away when a previously damaged unit gets healed, so its not an abrupt transition from damaged to full hp.
I support this. Hell just make it alt! on/off toggle rather than hold down sounds amazing.
I would use this, I play with them off as zerg now because its really hard to get a true grasp of how many units you have with roaches banes and lings and even muttas when all you see is green bars...
what I would love the most is the option to choose permanently which units/buildings shows HP/progress bars.
HP bars on: queens and all buildings HP bars off: rest of the units
thoughts?
yea there should defeintely be a toggle option for this. why should i have to hold down the alt key? that's ridiculous..
this would be very useful, ive been just hovering over my units looking for guys to micro lol
I have them always on, and wouldn't ever use it. That said adding it in for the people who do, would be fine. I think the more options like these that we can toggle the better the experience can be because it can be customized to each person's preference.
I'd prefer to have an option to show health bars for injured units only, as well.
In the PTR I changed show health to a button on the side of my mouse. It's not perfect, but it goes a long way. I still really want a toggle though. I can't imagine why they don't give the option, since toggling health bars is already in the game, it's just limited to observers. They don't even have to assign it to a key, just put it as an assignable option in the hotkey configuration menu.
Somewhat of a different question, but does anyone that has been on PTR know if you can change the key you hold down to see HP bars? Left Alt is my talk key in ventrilo and sometimes it can be annoying for the bars to pop up (I play with show only bars on selected units) every time I talk.
nevermind, thank you Grimace ^^
I've been doing FE Roach/Queen in on certain ZvZ maps and that is a situation where I would definitely love this feature. Anything to help me easily monitor all of my Queens' HP for the ease of transfuse, especially when the muta numbers start to climb.
I'd like a lot more options for Health Bars.
- just units - just structures - friendly - hostile - damaged + existing options with a Toggle that you can set to any of the options.
Wow, so thanks to the guys citing the options for observer/replay mode true toggle on HP bars. According to one of the fan sites, it is the letter "H".
Now I'm really really confused as to why this can't be a regular toggle in a game. So weird.
EDIT: And some of the other options ppl are listing would be super nice. Like only certain units, buildings, etc. That would greatly clear up some clutter in big battles... esp. if you could toggle those options!
I have them off at default for late game fights but in earlier game I use alt.
I could of sworn that I saw xhydrax turn off health bars permanently one game. Maybe he just held it down the while game*shrugs*

the only thing i still dont get, and want, but would never bother posting because i do not know where to, and it wouldnt even get read anyway... is...
WHY THE HELL CANT H TURN OFF HP BARS WHILE OBSING? it turns them on... but not off??
blizzard.......... why!!!!!
as any smart SC2 player i have my HP "always on", the only way to disable this as an observer is to disable it through the options. Now if the HP settings are normal, or off, w.e hitting H during obs turns them ON. they should fix this so that it turns them off as well. anyone with proper info where to post this i would do it, send me a pm if u know where one posts this type of VERY good ideas.
Another issue I want to raise is the healthbar looks too big and ugly. You can give any designer 2 hours and he will come up with a more elegant and less obstructive healthbar, so I can't understand why Blizzarr could let that happen. Or is it only me?
I play with HP bars on all the time, but I agree, a true toggle is needed, especially since the tab button can cause some conflicts during micro battles...
I really like the idea of only showing the health oh hurt units. That would be a great feature. To bad it is too smart and creative for them to put it in on their own.
I'm fine without it, but I wouldn't mind it.

Yes this annoys me too. I can only assume it's a bug because it makes no sense. The observer H hotkey only works if health bars are disabled in the menus.
But tbh who even thought of the H hotkey without instantly coming to the realization that allowing ALT to toggle would be vastly superior in all circumstances? It's so obvious.
i just wanted smaller health bars. Im not blind.
I would agree with this. It's a big pain.
Yeah, this has been definitely something that's been voiced for a long time and I can't believe anyone would vote otherwise. Having to play with HP bars on all the time makes the game look quite ugly and obviously cluttered.
Like honestly, you have seriously lost games because of hp bars? because i find that hard to believe, honestly, like maybe in pre-1k diamond but even then how do you not see the moving-transition from point a to b on ur screen?

I find the same results. No idea why it's done this way. It wouldn't even be a big deal if you had the same option in game... but I can't play with HP bars off b/c they help too often. So now every time you switch from playing to replays you have to change a setting in options to be able to use H normally? Doesn't make any sense.
that'd be pretty cool if they added it... especially for specs
to be honest, it'd be another nice and convenient option to have for the gamers who need it, but i'd rather have blizzard fix all the other ui problems before they even start to implement this, e.g. the fucking right-click-assign-control-group-bar garbage.
