12/26/10 Volume II coming out soon! I felt I needed to pick up some stray games that I left out and really should have put in. So I've been hard at work on a second volume of SC2 PP2010 pretty much as soon as I uploaded the 1st one.
Volume 2 "teaser": - Foxer's "Can't touch this" - KiwiKaKi's "Hurricane" - Garimto's "Nuclear Fallout" - MysticPrime's "Catch me if you can" - TLO's "Light up the sky" - (and 5 more)
Ever since Starcraft 2 came out I've been on the lookout for a collection of video highlights of the best, most ballsy, pimpest plays. I remember that the old pimpest plays were the ones that really got me hooked onto the SCBW pro scene. Around august I began to recount some of the best games I've seen, and some of the most ballsy plays, and kept a small list in a text file. The thread made a week or so ago about SC2 pimpest plays helped me fill in the last 3 out of 10 games and from then I've been hunting down the VODs, cutting them up and editing them together into a highlight video. I finished about 3 hours ago.
These songs are beats made by Yegeda and TinoXbeatz used with permission. If you download them and like them I think these guys would really appreciate a subscribe or a comment, it doesn't cost you anything and it means a lot to them
*I've gotten comments saying that a track sounded like Undead Hollywood, I don't know this group, but all the songs did actually come from the artists above, however their beats could have been inspired or a remix of Undead Hollywood. So I suppose a track has to be partially credited to: Undead Hollywood.
EggsNBaconBreakfast - PP #8 Artosis vs KHB (I know Huk, and MANY others have done this, but this was the 1st time I believe and the timing as so clutch)
Teamliquid - PP #7 Morrow vs Strelok (I credited this slightly wrong in the video, i said Nevake (Teamliquid) but the nevake part was wrong)
PsyonicReaver - PP #6 David Kim vs PsyonicReaver (this was originally on their justin.tv channel but I couldn't find the original for the life of me.)
AskJoshy - PP #5 Orb vs Zerker (in the video I think i named him Zenker, oops!)
GomTV - PP #4 TLO vs Hyperdub (I hope gom doesn't force me to take the vid down for whatever reason, I was debating whether or not to include any gomtv stuff at all. But I believe that a highlight reel is fair use? please?) No link to vid for obvious reasons
AleesaSC - PP #3 BrokenRhythm vs Joker
GomTV - PP #2 Hongun vs FruitDealer (I hope gom doesn't force me to take the vid down for whatever reason because of this one, I was debating whether or not to include any gomtv stuff at all. But I believe that a highlight reel is fair use? please?) No link to vid for obvious reasons
If you haven't seen pimpest plays before, the reason for the slight lack of "strategic" "tactical" or "genius build orders" is that the pimpest plays are something that people who have no clue about the game can see and say: "holy shit thats awesome". Pimpest plays were always about the gutsy, ballsy moves done by players, on the spot thinking, and brilliant displays of micro. (Also a side reason is that I didn't want to include too much gomtv stuff in fear of a take down notice, but i know i read or heard somewhere that a highlight reel is fair use, but with the way things are now is there actually no strings attached fair use anymore?)
half of the clips were really bad but the other half were awesome so i guess thats ok
just silly seeing things from early beta make it into pimpest plays, like someone doing some standard stuff with forcefield or david kim being much better than everyone and attack moving over someone with banelings isn't really pp material
Nice effort and some good plays, but i think that you picked some of the worse ones out there >_> LIke the time bomb one, for example...cool, i guess, but also bronze league time. I'm used to pimpest plays being micro or tricks; should have been more like "The Great Wall of Hong-Un" imo

Wouldn't showing that be illegal? Just about every video using GOM tv footage gets removed from youtube pretty fast.

TLO vs Hyperdub was used.
I would have included the following games:
MarineKing vs Kyrix on Shakuras (back and forth banelings vs marines) Fruitdealer vs TOP on Scrap Station (Baneling drops on tanks, followed by mass ultra) Fruitdealer vs ??? on Metalopolis (Mutas being healed by forward queens as the only line of defense)
But it was still a fun watch. For these scenarios I would have taken out the David Kim game (billion banelings), TT1 vs MasterAsia and probably the proxy evo camber game.
Honestly, maybe it's just my opinion, but I didn't really enjoy. The video was wayyy too long and had far too many unnecessary parts for a pimpest play. And a lot of them you included weren't very impressive... like David Kim's baneling "nuke"..? There were a ton better plays. I think it should just be redone :-/.
For example, TTone vs MasterAsia, you could have shown so much *more* than what you had shown, but kept the play to under 30 seconds. Show sporadic 3 second clips near the end showing the dire situation, then show TTone attacking both buildings in 8x speed mode, then at the very last second show the zealot in slow motion attacking both buildings then getting surrounded. Then quickly pan to MasterAsia's extractor, show TTone leaving, and then pan away.
Sort of like how you did TLO vs Whitera, although I can't believe you didn't show the start and the proxy and everything building up... if you watch the old pimpest plays you'd see it's a LOT more fast paced and makes it more exciting, I found myself actually continually checking how far I was through the video and even being tempted to fastforward at spots during hte lulls.
2 thoughts this made me think of realy.. a "pimpest plays of the decade" 2000-2010 would be nice to see. and this music is g ood for games. sc2 or w/e game would be a lot cooler with music more like this
Wasn't really feeling the music choices, also I think it was a bit annoying to have the music up so loud covering the commentators. Since they were speaking in English, I had this urge to understand them, even if I knew their words were inconsequential. It just irked me.
Awesome video. I think one great play that's not missing was some Korean Zerg (checkprime maybe) before the GSL started, put a proxy hatch in his opponents base on scrap station and ended up winning with spine crawlers. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
what was that game where nexgenius fe'd in gsl and held off and insane amount of roaches with ff and stalkers? I forget but that should be up there, epic hold.
Very enjoyable, nice job on the editing too (though I thought the music was a bit too loud since it drowned out the commentary somewhat) ^^
I'd disagree with a few choices, but I don't think you're likely to find a global consensus on just 10 plays from the year that make most peoples lists. Great effort all in all
Great video. Of course he could have put some other scenes there..so many great things happened in sc2 Still, this brings back memories. I remember all those games. Don't be overly critical of the content. There were different standards for quality play back then. Great video. We should have more of these...especially from the early days. Don't know about you, but I enjoyed them more actually. Everything was new and we had some crazy games. Nowadays it's way too cheesy/allinish. I'm hoping we'll get through that quickly.
Pimpest Plays from SC1 were much more entertaining. I could watch them over and over again and they would never get boring. You can appreciate the game more from a build order perspective rather than some exciting situations or great moves. From this movie the real genius was the HongUn wall and the rest was just interesting which is quite dissapointing.

You can argue that it is a personal opinion/taste as to which videos/games you put but (IMO ) you can only choose from micro moves and not preplanned macro builds/rushes. It has to be something instantaneous and not planned.
This was definitely going to be a hard year to gather a "Pimpest Plays" set with all the crazy innovation we've seen since launch, but I really liked most of the plays in this video. I had forgotten about that last Scrap Station match with TLO, that was beautiful haha.
Great compilation, but I'd have to agree with so many others that the david kim game wasn't really that impressive in any way.
Idra game was so so... guess it was all because he skipped the supply depot.
Replace david kim with MKP and IdrA with something else and I'd have no complaints!
And what was up with that mothership? Teleport instead of recall? Makes it so much more useful (especially now that it's so slow it's basicly standing still).
Don't really agree with some of the choice of the plays, but other than that amazingly well made video. The intro was very well thought out and very well done. The quality for some clips were meh but the BW pimpest play vids never had that amazing quality anyways.
Overall, great video. Just some questionable picks but this is really subjective anyways x]
It was a nice first attempt, and perhaps you or other people who are interested in making PP videos could use this as a learning experience for the future of PP vids.
I only noted a couple of scenes that were even worth watching or having in the video.. (Orb's FFs and Hong's wall off, which, by the way, was really undersold by the commentators..) Other than that, it's well appreciated and a nice first-try. Go easy on the cheese next time.
I can't believe people like this video. Bad choices, bad music and bad editing. I salute your effort but you could learn a bit from the BW pimpest play.

the source is VOD and not reps.
This doesn't really say much. It's like me asking "what kind of cereal did you get" and answering "I got cereal made of corn." (As opposed to oats, but whatever.)

You're wrong, silly. He says that some clips look terrible because he used bad quality VOD as source and, therefore, couldn't make them look better.

Is there a single person out there who actually agrees with the inclusion of clips like the mass baneling game or even the evo chamber/banshee rush clips? They seemed like such disappointing clips amidst so many other awesome choices.
I get that not everyone is going to agree on what constitutes the pimpest plays of a year's worth of games, but I think going with a consensus would have greatly improved the clip quality here...
Cool video - the editing is really good for sure It would be nice for the people who havent read the thread i made to be able to look at all the other "Pimpest Plays", so if you could include a link to it, many more can enjoy great work!
banshee rush was lame tbh. Evo chamber thing was lame as well. Drone rush was cool but there was way better material to choose then that. and the david kim was probably the dumbest one in the bunch.
Also TTone vs MasterAsia is not pimp, there's nothing pimp about it. its just funny. Does not deserve to be in this video.
For the future, make a thread and let users submit the clips they think should make it. After that, hold a vote between the clips submitted. The top clips are then used in your PP video. Also a couple pointers, try to keep the clips as short as possible. And try to search for the highest quality video available for each of the clips, if this is too much work for you, ask TL for help and im sure some people would gladly help. Overall, good first video though, props to you for taking the time to make it.
Well boy this can certainly needs some improvements. Honestly I think you should always prioritize replays over Vods. Skip the commentary and just record it yourself. (Obviously not possible with GSL but the quality from there is accaptable). The bad quality VODs are just sheer pain to the eyes. You need to shorten down some of the clips as well, for they got quite boring at times.
Other than that, good effort and still better than anything I could do!
you are awesome for remaking the pimpest plays, and I hope it makes a comeback because it was one of my favorite BW videos to watch, but these plays were really not that great, maybe someone should make a thread and everyone post their favorite replays and note the time of the pimpass plays and then everyone votes on it
Loved it. Although it's nice people are recommending clips that would have been better suited for the video..its all a matter of opinion and I think you did a kick ass job. Thanks!

what do you mean by gimmicky??? pimpest plays was allways about unorthodox and/or cheesy situations.
Awesome Awesome Awesome! It's amazing how many of these games I actually remember watching from the early early Beta....even the David Kim vs. Psyonic game from his stream I remember watching live :-D So exciting to get to see all of that again--great job!
- marineking.prime baneling micro in gsl. - drunkbobby stalker micro IdrA - nexsickness warpprism micro his immortal to kill purplezenith - Jinro blocking his mineral line with a autocannon in the gsl

pimpest plays was always gimmicks. i remember there was one where a Terran sent a bunch of scvs to an empty expo to trick the Zerg's overlord scout into believe that the Terran FE'd when he was actually gearin up for an early push. It was pretty gimmicky/cheesy and yet pretty pimp.
IMO, pimpest plays are stuff that's gimmicky and cheesy and if it works, you're baller and if fails you've just made urself look stupid.
Clips were a little too drawn out, but overall good production Some of the clips were funny, but not necessarily epic / a "pimpest play," as others have suggested.
I like what you are doing but I think you should rethink what clips go in. For example the mothership thing shouldnt of made it in. Yeah it was funny at the time but it was grossly OP and was nerfed a ton. That clip was from early beta! Also the ones with bad quality shouldn't of made it in, and less commentary please.
Man, im sad that you only used about 2 clips from gsl. There were much better moments there than in a lot of the videos you used, no offense. Why not some foxer marine micro or MC's insane pushes, or adelscott's proxy 2gate from dreamhack?
I realized right soon after i put this out and from all the feed back that I missed a lot of really worthy candidates. I felt i needed to do justice to 2010 so I've been hard at work on a "volume II" pimpest plays 2010. I'm thinking of releasing that in the next few days. I pretty much uploaded this one, went to eat christmas dinner and began hunting down vods for the volume 2 cuz I got a lot of immediate response for this. gonna update OP for more info.
I'm sad this game wasn't shown. The clip is rather short, exemplifies amazing micro in a huge tournament setting, perfect for the top 10 pimpest plays:
GSL Season 1 sSKS vs NEXFreeSaGA [Round of 32 match 9] Set 3
Thanks for making this and it was a great effort. However none of these clips really qualify as pimp plays. They were all just something interesting, or a strand of good decision making, but with the broodwar pimpest plays, they clips were a combination of decision making and flawless micro. I really can't wait for the next pimpest plays tho, I'm sure there will be a lot more games to choose from now that sc2 is developed a lot more.
TLO is just genius. The thought of terrans using nukes that well is SOO frightening! And that FF and storm combo almost made me cry.
For you next video, add some more epic zerg! There was pretty much a drone rush, baneling bust, and a nydus base trade. There's gotta be something better.
Although games 6-10 were pretty bad. I'm sure I saw better ones during the last year. Hoping SCLegacy will do "real" pimpest plays again in the future!
updated the OP w/ the latest volume 2. felt i didn't get all that I wanted in the 1st one, and I actually got alot of plays simply from the feedback. So with still a few days left in 2010 i decided to make V2. a bit less in the editing department tho but it makes for a more crisp highlight reel i hope.
1. The quality seemed really bad at parts..? And I watched at 480 so.... Maybe get somebody else to 1080p it for youtube?
2. Had a commentator or someone just switch to Cam to breakup the sc2onsc2 games but more importantly HYPE UP each top 10 in like a 20 second intro to each clip...
Edit: btw great video... i didnt say this as a diss, i was just stating, yeah, that to get this from a fan made into a proper video... these 2 simple changed would probably cut it...
