INFO Hi guys! My name is Chris Notbusch - I am a passionate sculptor and gamer living in Colorado pursuing a career in art. All my sculptures are primarily made out of a polymer clay called 'Super Sculpey', and are painted with acrylic paint. The average time it takes to complete one is ~15 hours.
----!MANY ADDITIONAL PICS CAN BE FOUND USING THE LINKS BELOW!---- The pictures shown here in this post are just a sample of what I consider to be my best works on Starcraft (I have done some others not shown below). My photobucket is the place most frequently updated with new stuff, and is also where you can find the full history of all my sculpts. My website:www.notbuschmodeling.com and my Photobucket (with LOADS of pictures): http://s881.photobucket.com/albums/ac11/cnotbusch/
My sculpting helps me pay my way through college; if you like my work and wish to contribute you may donate on my website - even pennies matter! Blizzard has prevented me from selling these, but it IS possible to commission my sculpting talents for a sculpt of your very own. If you have a favourite unit (not necessarily from Starcraft) you would like brought to life I would be glad to help - more information can be found on my website, and I can be contacted at: cnotbusch@gmail.com
Mind=blown. A lotta the time I say stuff is good cos its just fanboys who try out stuff which is otherwise lame but you sir are the REAL deal. I will def be contacting you and donating too...
that's pretty awesome. I love Zeratul, you've managed to make him look like more of a badass than before (I don't know how you managed that). Always awesome to see amazing gamer art on TL.
The organic forms look absolutely gorgeous but the mechanical forms seem kind of... organic. Though it's probably very difficult to work clay into sharp, defined shapes
Your newer sculpts look much better than your older ones, btw. Which is actually mind-boggling because the older sculpts look very, very nice.
I saw the original post and lost it. I have been looking for the original link and couldn't find it but wow kudos on the new sculptures. Brood lord is smexeh >:3
Wow great work, and with great work comes a nice price If I hadn't just dropped some bones on a new surround sound for my room I'd be getting a Hydralisk, maybe soon (if blizzard doesn't try to shut you down again)
I particularly like the Zergling and the Mutalisk. The way you were able to show such clean organic detail and maintain the proportionality of everything is really awesome. Especially capturing the Mutalisk in action when it is flapping its wings.
I like your zerg ones, the humans and toss ones look a bit out of proportion to me, which is why I favor the zerg ones so much because even having them look out of proportion looks really cool. Not saying you did a bad job though, lots of details even if it does look a bit funky to me.
lord have mercy, these are amazing. it sucks that blizzard shut you down for selling these, i would def buy one right if i could, the roach would look nice next to my monitor
Just wow. Awesome job bro. Love them all but specifically your Zerg sculptures are extremely impressive. I think the Zerg units really let you show off your abilities in the small details and color work. Keep hounding Blizzard and tell them you know several people willing to pick these up!
Amazing stuff, I really love the detail, especially on the Zerg models, not surprised Blizzard would want to shut you down, it makes their official figures look like happy meal toys in comparison.
If you have a good video camera, I would like to see maybe a panorama or some close-ups of these. I don't think a handful of pictures does these works of art justice.
Amazing stuff, I really love the detail, especially on the Zerg models, not surprised Blizzard would want to shut you down, it makes their official figures look like happy meal toys in comparison.
BTW who is the guy in the MLG shirt meant to be?
I'd assume it's Morrow, infested terran is his nickname and all that.
Jiyan= i use a polymer clay and paint with acrylic helloson= depends on the project a quick one takes 10hours of work akaname= thank you for your donation and keep checking my website to see what new creations you have helped come to life Albundy= yes its a roach with more of my style added than i usually do Donttazembro= i sold them for around 270.00usd each and people could order whatever they want made. contact me via email if you have more specific questions. uok= ive sent them a email every week since then and haven't herd a peep yet kind of annoying that they cant even give me the time of day even if it were to just say no. Xxio= hopefully if i get enough donations i can make that happen or i was even thinking of showing how to make a zergling step by step and all donators would get a copy of the video baeracaed= i have a horrible camera currently, and i sold that along time ago. however im making another mutalisk now that i finished the broodlord PhiliBiRd= hopefully donations will be able to buy me a new camera Wargizmo= that is infested Husky NeV= well i feel foolish. thank you tho! Ahtiven= lol sorry i did the painting too i am and artist that primarily sculpts but i do everything from square one to finish!.
Just an update to those who donate i will be coming out with a video on how to make a sculpture from start to finish that will be sent out to those people thanks alot!.
I think its Husky. He gave that sculptre to Husky iirc.
The toss and zerg sculptures are AMAZING! I'm not as wowed by the marine, but then I'm also a zerg player and hate that unit. Your broodlord is awesome, great work!
The mutalisk is definitely my favorite, but all of these are absolutely amazing! I really hope you can get a license or something from Blizzard to start/go back to selling these.
Thanks to all who have posted and like my work. i will be trying to produce more and thank you to the donators that will be helping future projects. also if you donate feel free to shoot me an email requesting certain pieces so i can get an idea for future projects as well
The sculptures are great. What would make them even better is if the photos you take of them are improved. Because no offense but some are pretty sub-par and thus make your work look kind of bad. And don't think for a second that you need a better camera. With the following two tips any camera will do just fine.
First get a tripod, some of these are blurry from shaking. Even a 20$ tripod would be plenty for what you're doing. Use it every single time.
Also many of your photos are really dark. Makes it hard to appreciate the detailing you obviously spent eons doing. I haven't done much photography of still objects like this but try the Hollywood 3-point lighting system. It's the defacto standard from shooting video and is super simple to set up.
Still awesome looking sculptures, hope they hire you. If not you still have the talent to make sculptures and sell, just go with sculptures not specifec to any licence/world. Dragons, knights, generic soldiers, mythical beasts etc, or try to design your own aliens.
Love the work, brilliant skills and craftsmanship. My favorite is clearly the Broodlord and because of that i would like to see some little broodlings flying on his side. Still this is not a destructive critic and just something that entered my "wishlist" the second i saw that broodlord.
Again, magnificent work, hope you get plenty of potential buyers in the SC2 community
thats a smart way to do things, just show them, and don't sell them, but if people commission you for one, well you never advertised youwere selling them, you just made them for yourslef
You know there actually jobs where you have to make modals like these of virtual modals. Like in the animated films studios. Maybe even at blizzard itself. If this is truely your passion you should try find a cool job for it.
Those are pretty incredible. The only thing I could find wrong with any of them was that maybe Raynor's gun was too small. Other than that, simply awesome! Keep up the good work!
Wow, those are really awesome. Amazing job with all of those, I can't even imagine making any of those, I hope to see even more if you do continue making them.
I'm very impressed, pretty gay bliz shut you down though, hope you can sort something out and start selling these, cause if the thread means anything you'll have plenty of buyers!
it sucks blizzard is shutting you down man. I guess I can understand it a little but I am so glad you decided to keep using your talent and fusing it with your sc2 interest. I am sure everything will work out in the long run.
Your Zerg sculptures are absolutely amazing. As for Jim Raynor... that rifle looks a bit awkward. Then again, it's still awesome. You should try to make a Baneling sculpture and fill it up with green liquid ^^
These are comparable to the sculptures made by the game design and concept art students at my school.
Are you in the industry/art school?
I'll give it the old art school critique if you don't mind (Disclaimer: It is very common for artists to openly discuss the successes and short comings of their pieces, and impartial discussion is absolutely essential for anyone who wants to get better. You wouldn't be offended if someone told you how to improve your macro in SC2, right? Please don't think I'm being an asshole or acting like I'm better here.)
Modeling: 8/10 Detail: 10/10 Presentation: 8/10
I had to take off a couple of points for modeling, in general the proportions of the models were excellent, but you will notice that most people were responding particularly well to the zerg models, which probably has to do with the fact that the proportions of humanoids and bipedal figures are known much more intimately by the average person. Now I'm fully open to the idea that this was a stylistic choice, but the heads of your zealot and zeratul are too large for their bodies. Raynor has good proportions, but his facial features aren't rendered with the same level of attention as the rest of his body.
The detail and attention to detail paid in the finishing process of these models is top of the line. Color has been employed expertly, and everything has been finished in a dark and brooding style that is appropriate to the subject matter. The execution here is practically flawless.
Presentation doesn't really matter here as you're just posting these on a forum, but the picture quality could have been a little bit better, and it would have the names posted with their corresponding units.
Excellent work though, I would say if you are doing this purely as a hobby that you are very close to approaching expert level, and if you have been trained your level of expertise is showing through your work.
Tercotta= thankyou so much i will definately go out and buy those things for future projects. however i think a new camera is still in order since theres nowhere to put a tripod on this one. Dagoberto= never worked with cake before im sure i could if i practiced. the best i could do as of right now is make non eatable parts to put on top of a cake DND_Enkil= i have been also working on my own creations. i am entering one of them in a artshow soon i think it starts in 2 months ill have pics up on the site soon for that. masterbreti= gotta be creative in this world i guess. never thought hotshot billionare company would shut a 1 person operation down like they did i guess you could have all the money in the world and greed will still get the best of you Marradron= yes i am currently persuing those carrers by going to college for 3d design. i feel i need some computer training b4 i am ready for that. CaptainCrush= jim raynor is the basterd child of my collection one day i will re do him Noxi= i am actually thinking of doing all the sc2 commentators and get some publicity Zivac= there bigger than most people think. i belive all the huminoid ones like jim raynor, zeratul, and the zealot are 11inches tall or so. mutalisk wast very big about a foot from wing tip to bottom jaw. fateless= yes i am going to metro state right now studying 3d design so i can get the computer skills i need to be successful in the the industry. befor then i went to the artinstitiue of denver studying industrial design or(product design) i have never studied sculpture just been a hobbie. and thankyou for the critique i learned lots. havent hear one of those since the artinstitute and your right if everyone says its fine and dandy i wont change or improve. so thankyou!
I suggest you guys go the site to see all the sculptures in different positions. I wasn't sure about the roach until I saw the other angles: http://www.notbuschmodeling.com/
yes please do check out the site those pics i have here are just a taste of what i have on my site. and yes i know my photography skill suck the big one. Im working hard to fix that issue because they look horrid compared to real life. also i might be putting together a collection of brood lings that will be given away to people that donate
On January 28 2011 10:20 StarStruck wrote: I wonder how big the models are. Are the pictures on your website actual size?
no they are much bigger than the pic if you look at one of my reply's i state the measurements of a few. for example from the left spike to the right spike on the broodlord is as big as my computer keyboard minus the numpad.
On January 30 2011 15:59 Rickilicious wrote: Fuck blizzard dude, these are awesome as hell. You have talent!

Online aliases were made for a reason, if Blizzard tries to sue, you never existed.
yes although part of me wants to be this enthusiastic i don't want to spoil my reputation with blizzard because i have high hopes of working for them one day.
Hello guys I have a new treat for you all today. This is the Queen of blades enjoy!!!! And thankyou to all who have donated you all were sent pictures for this project from start to finish. If you like what i do and want to support my cause throw a buck or two my way! and as always email me at cnotbusch@gmail.com for questions and check out my website www.notbuschmodeling.com where you can donate.
Your zerg ones look the best, probably because they are the least humanoid and the least recognizable anyways haha. (For ex: doing Jim Raynor's hair isn't as realistic as looking at any part on a zerg creature).
they a look look good and i can tell alot of work/talent went into them but i cant help but nitpick on them. alot of the sculptors like the jim raynor and kerrigan sculptures looks a bit "off". they dont exactly look like the ingame version of them. kerigans face inparticular kinda bugs me.
just me nitpicking. the mutalisk one looks nice tho.
yes that is why i am so fearful to do very specific characters. because even if there the slightest bit off then there just wrong all together but i do enjoy the practice and i am still learning!
Hey guys got another one for ya been busy with school but still working on getting work out. my next piece will be a infestor! so keep an eye out check out my website www.notbuschmodleling.com and if you like what I am doing throw a buck or two my way with the donation button!
sorry ive been slacking on keeping this thread up to date hope i still got some fans out there check out more pics at http://s881.photobucket.com/home/cnotbusch email me cnotbusch@gmail.com if you have questions!
Woah! The one of the Dark Templar is just so amazing! (not that any of these are not amazing, but still). The hydralisk one also looks super detailed and awesome!
People like you are the reason I quit art school and went to real college lol.
Spending 3-4 hours on something and then watching some1 else do even better in 15. I wasnt terrible but some people just have a gift, and you sir are one of them,
Amazing work.
Fans never cease to amaze me in the level of art they can provide. AMAZING.

I really don't think its right that blizz will not even respond to your emails after asking you to stop making these. Maybe if enough of us were to email them they would change their mind and either commission you to create some for them to sell or take their cut of your earnings.
I would think this would be a good place to start: merchandiselicensing@blizzard.com
MaestroSC: it all comes with practice lots off it but it did help getting a head start on the "crowed" due to natural talent and supportive parents Squirrel_x360a: email me xza I would get sued for all my worth however I am available for commissioned customs StarStruck one can only dream bluespace the muta is long gone sorry there are more pics on my photobucket http://s881.photobucket.com/home/cnotbusch as well as the first muta at my website www.notbuschmodeling.com teotwawki: I emailed that email address once a week for about a month and haven't heard a peep from them I guess blizzard is too stuck up to even just say No....... (love there games) however I did successfully get permission to make and sell Riot IP (intellectual property) aka League of Legends champs on the way! however i am always available for commissioned work all you have to do is email me letting me know what you would like made and I start working!
Hello folks Finished another hydra I love the face i did for this one. so my future plans are to get a webcam and start video recording my sculpts from start to finish then time warping it or fast forward it let me know what ya think! my next project is Kassadin from the game League of Legends

I'd love to see this! I can't even imagine how much work goes into this - your sculptures look incredibly detailed.
Oh man YOU ROCK !!! I've never seen an hydralisk as scary, good job The Hydralisk is my favorite Z unit btw so thanks for contributing to the comunity!
He has amazing skill at this sculpting, these are incredible. Though he doesn't seem to like terran units. A banshee or ground viking sculpture would be kick ass.

haha, i took art for like 3 years i think it was.. in highschool, then some guy from thailand came to our school in NZ for about a month to do some student exchange thing, he stated he's never drawn or did art or anything, and within 2 weeks he was much much better then me...
so i took up something else =.=.. i beat him in english tho =.=
The hydra is about 7inches tall And just as a heads up My next few sculpts will be from the game League of Legends since they have given me permission to make and sell I will be auctioning them off on eBay. And yes if anyone would like to hire my services as a sculptor you can find information on my website www.notbuschmodeling.com or email me at cnotbusch@gmail.com Thank you for enjoying what I do!!!!
Hello guys my name is Chris, what I have for you today is a sculpture of the champion Kassadin. he is up for grabs http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180702752599 Please enjoy and let me know what everyone thinks check out more of me at my website www.notbuschmodeling.com or email me at cnotbusch@gmail.com Now accepting custom orders! http://s881.photobucket.com/albums/ac11/cnotbusch/ more pics!! hope all goes well and I am looking forward to doing all the champs!
If I wasn't completely skint atm I'd be looking to commission something right now! I see you're also a zerg fan, which is ideal as I'd be wanting something zergy Favouriting this!
Hey guys just an update sorry for the posting delay, trying to balance school projects and business projects! here are my latest sc2 sculptures and some upcoming pics, Please subscribe to my Youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/cnotbusch I am getting better at the videos but I do think they show my work off much better than my crappy photography. and as always check out my website www.notbuschmodeling.com Thanks for your support!!

Update on the Ultralisk, got the legs roughed in on the left side need to do the same for the right, then the body, after that find detailing on the legs and body, followed by a bake to save that work. then I start the head and arms!

oh man, this is gonna be the greatest thing ever
Um yea... so I was making a nice new OP for chris and kind of cocked it up by accidentally posting. Pics/vid of ultralisk will be available soon.
Have you asked a lawyer about the legality of selling them? As long as you don't claim it is an Ultralisk you could probably sell it. (Just say it's a brown monster in the selling description). You only infringe when you say it is the character itself.
thanks for all the support folks, on a side note all my work is commissioned everything ive made has a owner check my site for details www.notbuschmodeling.com
Wow...these are pretty amazing. Do you have a site or page that could tell us other artist SC2 players what tools you use or how you approach the sculpture?
On November 29 2011 20:30 Hashmeister wrote: great sculptures!! but WAY too expensive imho...
They're expensive but not overpriced (imo at least)... that's kind of just how much it costs. These aren't being mass produced by a machine; they are handmade bespoke & unique items that someone spent hours creating by hand. I could walk into ANY art shop and be guaranteed to find a painting that A) was more expensive, B) took less time to create and C) took less skill to create.
My ultralisk should arrive any day now and I paid $440 USD for it. That allowed $40 for shipping (though Chris actually paid the extra shipping cost out of his own pocket as the ultralisk is a big beefy bastard). If we say he spent ~$80 in materials total (paints, clay, metals etc) that leaves him with ~$320. That's the final cash.
His website says that it takes him ~15 hours average per sculpt, though AFAIK Mr Ultralisk took more time than that. I get the impression that is pure crafting time only, not the total time required for the entire thing. I don't think that would include the time he must spend preparing and obtaining materials, planning the sculpt, preparing the sculpt for baking, baking time (~3 hrs), time spent packaging and posting it, and the time spent reading and replying to client emails (and Chris can confirm that I sent a lot of emails). That all takes a lot of time.
So assuming he gets ~$320 per sculpt, and he spends ~25 hours on each one, that means if you commission a sculpt from him you're paying ~$12.80 for each hour of his time. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
So I've always played starcraft sine i was a little kid, and I've always always thought Zerg was by far the better race...they're just so much cooler than the other races....but Every Single Protoss Sculpture you've pictured here blows me away.. . Completely incredible work, the zerg ones are cool, but the Protoss one's are like spot on, look like they're pics outta the game almost. so incredibly beautiful.
Such a lack of terran units!! I'm so broke atm and couldnt afford this but as soon as I get some cash I'd seriously consider ordering a tank or a ghost or something. These sculptors look amazing.
lol thanks guys, yea the lack of terran has to do with the fact how difficult it is to make armor outta clay not only that but if one measurement is off Que it makes the whole thing look wrong. as my skills progress ill be able to spit out terran as fast as the other races.
This is legitimately one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Where did you learn to sculpt like this? If you taught yourself, then you're a ridiculously talented bastard :p
Hey guys Im going outta town for a week and a half just finished a awesome project, the idea of this one is its what the Protoss looked like when they themselves were still nomadic people lets just say Ancient Protoss. just throwing up a few pics ill take better ones when i get back and do a video. He also doesnt have a home yet so if you are interested in buying him email me at cnotbusch@gmail.com and throw me an offer! i could use the christmas cash anyways gotta catch a plane cheers!!!
You're so amazingly talented, I honestly can't believe that you need only 15 hours on average to make and paint one of these. I don't have enough money to buy them, but I'll subscribe to your youtube that's the least I can do ^^. Please continue to update this post, your work is awesome .
Maybe you should get in contact with TL and make a couple scultures inspired by the new TL logo, I'm sure a lot of people would be interested and you wouldn't have to deal with copyright issues with blizzard.

thanks guys and as for the idea of making the team liquid horse heads as seen on there new poster ive been given permission to use them and I will be sculpting highly detailed sculpts of them in the future let me know what you think of the ancient protoss idea if you all like ill keep going with it and enhancing
This is absolutely amazing, i wonder how back ordered he is? I would love to commission him to make one, even for the price, but i would prefer to not wait 6months for it if possible.
saw this from a dota2 thread. absolutely amazing work. i think this deserves a bump and please buy one from the guy if you had the money and love one of this figures!
WOW! I can't believe i haven't seen this thread till today. You have a real talent. Nice work. Perhaps you can try to work with blizzard so you can make some dough.
as an aspiring 3d cg artist i thought on the 2nd last zeratul oh man... is this even real ? even some of the highres- poly models (10mio and up) i saw are not that detailed like yours. beautiful work, you have an amazing talent. referenced
thanks guys i thought of streaming me making them but it might be boring to some and sorry for the craptastic picture quality my camera is in need of an update with the times making another ultra as i speak then next will be a Infested Marine! im excited

However these are FUCKING awesome :D Nice rebump :D
hello guys More goodies, sorry about lack of attention on my posts here life's been crazy but im gonna work on it and get everyone responded too, on a side note Blizzard contacted me they are gonna spotlight my sculptures on the Main SC2 website!!!!!!!!! excited first they wanted to sue me and now they are praising me lol I see alot of question on selling of sculptures plz email me for response cnotbusch@gmail.com enjoy the new ones did another ultra, and finished sculpting a Infested Terran today just needs paint
Hello, I have a quick suggestion to help clean up the website a little bit. The grammar, spelling, and overall sentence structure on your site is poor. I know the site is 90% pictures and videos, but the crucial pages about who you are and how to order are sloppy. It is hard to read and a little unappealing. The bio and order info pages are the prime suspects that I would polish up. This is just my opinion so please feel free to take it or leave it. I think taking the time to clean up the spelling and grammar makes the site looks better, and it is generally more appealing when all the small pieces come together to represent a professional looking small business.
I agree with your suggestions redpanda8 my site has needed a good tune up since I slapped it together in the beginning, hard to find time but im working on it
I've never seen such realistic Zerg in my life, that's some seriously amazing work. I'm blown away that the average time is only 15 hours to make, they look more like they'd take months...

Absolutely fantastic! The sculptures are really awesome, unfortunately the pictures of them are not - sometimes they are plainly out of focus, others seem to have been taken at iso1600, bit of the images are saturated, colors look shitty, etc etc.
Get a friend with a dSLR or even a good compact and a tripod to make really nice, clean, sharp pictures. Have the background a little further away, so you can use an aperture of f/8 or something, and have the structures lit by some indirect light (spot pointed to a white wall/ceiling).
all finished painting, Ryder I focused in sculpture in my highschool days. but my skills are a combination of years of trial and error, having high problem solving skills is essential to making projects happen in sculpture, not only that but the internet can teach you wonders if you know where to look! and yes I am getting my BA with a focus in sculpture but TBA ive learned 10 times more about sculpting on my own then in a classroom.
Hey guys havent posted in awhile been doing alot of non SC2 sculputres! check out this new hydra! also check out my stream im streaming myself sculpting now wwww.twitch.tv/cnotbusch
Seeing this for the first time now and I am just blown away. You, sir, are a master of your craft. Spent a good few minutes just gazing at the pictures and appreciating the detail. Simply stunning.
So amazing! especially with the Zerg. I'm not a fan of the zergling (namely the picture the sculpture seems to be copying), but the Ultralisk and hydralisk are particularly fantastic; and that zealot in the video, too.

In a sense these things are priceless. While it's so hard to speculate, these could inflate so much in value over time (like 50-200 years from now). Already they seem like a steal for 300$ (400 now).
Criticism wise, you could certainly work on improving your human faces, or humans in general.
Hmmm I may commission you to make a sick ass swarmlord from 40k ... You up to the task? If you could make one of the quality of stuff you show here and have it fairly large like 12 inches tall or so... I'd be ecstatic.
Can't you make a deal with Blizzard to split the profit or something? I'm sure some people would be willing to pay quite substantial amounts of money for a hand-made sc2 unit. I know I would.
Callyn: they can be ordered to make I just cant make them then sell them for example this guy ordered a marine to be done kinda like a tatto artist gets paid for the service not the content so it doesnt violate copyright its the same idea!!
