Man... has there ever been another player as eloquent? As genuine and wholesome? As honorable?
Has there ever been another player with the grandness of vision, the ability to see beyond just himself and at the scene as a whole? I don't think he ever chose to become an icon, but you can tell from the way he speaks and the things he says that he sees his legend as a gift given to him by his fans and so never takes it for granted, but is always struggling to reciprocate that love. It can't have been easy to give up a cushy job as a coach in SKT, but here he is again.
Back to the beginning, but forever the Emperor baby
It was so cool to see all of the TL members in the video :D On the other side, i loved more the simplicity of Nal_Ra series, this is more for wider audience. Sometimes when they want to make drama scenes, i just lol.
Thanks for the work mr. translator guy (and the timer too)

Yes, the first part.
Anyone else found it funny that they didn't say Blizzard but then again Blizzcon makes it pretty obvious what the game developer is lol. And company R - Huge Razer logo on the notebook :D
Awesome, glad we have a new series to watch after Nal_Ra's oldboy series and the becoming-a-progamer-dude. Huge thanks to everybody involved in the translation!
shoutout to all the translators, you guys are the nuts and bolts that make wester-eastern sc2 scene work. translation is hard and time consuming, so great thanks to all the translators!!
ps. i dont need the translations but i know how hard it is to translate and they sacrificed their time to bring happiness to others

Not only that, but the only logo they seem to be blurring out is Blizzard's.
Wow, I didn't know that they filmed a documentary on Boxer! Thanks for providing this to us, and thank you to subbing team for bridging the worlds of Korea and the rest of the world together. I think that the switch to SC2 was a great decision by Boxer, not only because he could continue to do what he loved and continue to make his fans happy, but because he can now be more aware of the love he receives from around the world, and not only from Korea. It was really touching to watch him interact with his overseas fans, and really heartwarming to see his girlfriend supporting him so much; he would fall to pieces without her.
I hope that we'll get to see more episodes soon; this was really well filmed! Emperor of Terran fighting!
amazing video, the things he says about making his fans trust him reminds me why we call him the emperor. which is a huge contrast to foxer with his whole name changing dilemma, "i'll change my name to whatever the fans want".

Great documentary. It's just amazing to see the effects of BoxeR's reach in first person and his girlfriend is truly a dedicated person that does so much for him. Thanks for the awesome translation.
This made me like him more and more. Since watching his games a kid, I've always been overwhelmed by his styles and humbleness, everything! COME ON, BoxeR!
It's as they say, lying behind every great man there is a great woman. Boxer's girlfriend is truly an amazing person; very caring and supportive of her man. Boxer hwaiting!
omg i love this, thank you so much for translating!!! I just got finished watching the show i really liked it a lot and i can't wait for the next episode! I hope boxer wins a GSL!
HUGE thanks for taking the time to sub this. I really enjoyed watching this, Boxer is indeed a great person. All the best to him and I hope he goes back to the top .

I'll let you decide.
From what i know, you can't do direct product placement in something like this, notice how they call the sponsor company "R" but you can clearly tell its Razer; I think its just how korean TV works and not something against blizzard.

You're completely right. From watching countless Korean shows myself, they usually blur & censor out main brand names. The sign at the top of the Hilton was blurred & the signs on the front of, as well as inside, the cafe that BoxeR met with "R" (Razor) were also blurred. Conspiracy theory debunked!
With that said, thank you guys so much for translations. I saw this raw but subs are <3!~ I hope BoxeR gets to win a GSL or at least get to the finals soon.
Man those chest bumps... Wow... I'm still watching but that just made me lower my head in shame. Anyways great job on the subs and more of this kind of thing would be amazing!
When hes in the hospital, it was really emotional for him, and even just watching it almost made me cry knowing he doesnt show pain in front of the fans, because he wants to be encouraging, very cool documentary, hope theres more in the future.

What´s the problem? People who have been his fans for a long time are obviously gonna get pretty excited if they meet him...
Wow, they really did an amazing job at dramatizing this a lot. This whole time I was really feeling for him, and eventually at the end, when I was like "Man he's going through so much!", I realized that I would much rather be where he is haha.
Edit: totally forgot to mention that the video was completely awesome.
Thank you soo much for subbing this! And for Boxer, my respect for him grew even more after watching this, words cannot describe how amazing he is. And mad props for his girlfriend too. All in all im just speechless.

Nope, NaDa has made more than BoxeR and he´s not all that wealthy either.
"BoxeR has become a commentator between two noobs" best line ever. Or maybe "This is nukes in StarCraft 2". Also, didn't this almost make it sound as if BoxeR was some sort of cancer patient in the beginning? It sounds so sad. I don't know. I loved all the behind the scenes stuff anyhow.

It was pretty interesting but they made his life seem so dramatic. I guess Boxer is a bit different then most normal progamers (young, usually immature, not really caring too much about their future yet) but that was a bit too much I think.
Watching this you feel like Boxer has some grandiose dream of being an inspiration to everyone, except it's about gaming. I mean, I guess it's not too far from the truth but I can't believe he is like that all the time... I supposed I could be completely wrong and he does live his life in that fashion when he's not being filmed but it just seems excessive, even for a progamer.
At least they did show a normal side to him when his girlfriend was playing his friend.
Some parts were a bit weird to me but maybe that's just a culture thing : not greeting his girlfriend because he's playing a game... saying "hi, I'm almost done it won't be long" isn't THAT hard, even if you're playing; having his girlfriend tie his shoes (OK, that was just funny), etc.
Overall I'll probably watch the rest when you guys manage to sub them! Nice work.

Boxer is a very likeable guy. There is something about him that makes him stand out from other bonjwas, perhaps because he's quite handsome, slim and charismatic, but you can't help but admire the guy. He's very polite from what I've seen, and always humble, yet he does indulge a little in being a celebrity. He's somewhat like the early MJ of starcraft - you know, before MJ started doing funny things.

I suggest you read his autobiography from his early pro gaming years. http://boxerbiography.blogspot.com/ It seems he thinks in the way you assume. It is something that works for him and was good for e-sports since it showed a professional and not a gamer.
Great watch. I've said it before and I'll say it again; TL's greatest strength is in its high production value and quality in both it's articles and videos; professional publication standards.

Aside from the documentary being really cool, I can't help to think that Blizz devs are really cool people too. I don't think there are any other game developers than Blizzard ones that have so much passion for gaming and so much love for their games/fans. Blizzard is the best game developer out there (closely followed by Bioware imo) and I think we're lucky to have them.
good job overall on it, but here's some tips...(that you could use to improve the subs....if you continue with translating+subtitling...coming from a retired stylist/etc in a fansubbing group >.<)
some notes: - I'm guessing you're using Aegisub
tips: - don't use the default style, I guess it really doesn't matter, but really (stylistically) changing it is good (look below) - don't use the default (Arial) font for subtitles, it really actually doesn't look that good - take shadow down. iirc default was 2, and that's... abit too much ish, personally I don't even use the shadows cause it's kinda...meh on subtitles >.>... - change the style colors as black + white isn't too good/stylistically x-x
other - saw some spelling mistakes here and there, but didn't really get to look through the whole thing,
DISCLAIMER: don't need to do these things, it's just... how to improve your subtitles if you _want_ to ^^'
I have yet to watch the whole thing though... since I'm kinda busy with hw... (>___X) ...only watched parts of it (jumped around)
Awesome job, really awesome! Watching it right now only watched half so far but still got me teary at points, i'm so weak to sentimental stuff lol, thanks Subbers! You guys are amazing!

I feel ya. The whole tone of the thing is kind of . . .weird. Dismal, even. Like it's about a guy who's trying his hardest but he's never gonna make it. Damn tendonitis... hope he can pull through and reproduce the dominance he had in scbw... boxer has not only captured my heart as a gamer but also as an individual... there will only be one emperor slayers_boxer... I think i speak for the entire sc community when saying we thank you for making e-sports what it is today.
Boxer's girlfriend is truly an amazing person. He doesn't even need to win anymore tournaments. He's already won the best thing there is - a beautiful woman with a huge heart.
"When the light is bright, the darkness behind it is darker because of it"
When Jun-Hyung and Boxer was playing...xD "Camera crew mistakenly turned off the power"
I first discovered Boxer's pimpest plays on youtube/sclegacy in 05 and was in awe of everything he did, I was also in awe of his vulture micro vs P and once I learned to use patrol I could do it to and he inspired me to learn how to play BW better.
I watched the whole video and Boxer's Wings really opened my eyes to all the lives of people behind the games and e-sports and how it's not glamorous at all but a sacrifice of time and health. A pro-gamers life is not some fairytale dream come true but an awkwardly unromantic hard life in front of a computer screen not even acknowledging your own girlfriend.
I haven't been that interested in following Boxer since he returned from the Air Force as I was only looking on Flash's & Jaedong's games. I definitely have a newfound respect for Lim Yo-Hwan, he puts down his own life for the fans more than the importance of money or fame it seems.
He will always remain The Emperor in the hearts of the fans...
This may just be a cultural difference between the east and west but they kind of made his girlfriend out to be very secondary to starcraft to him, which I do not believe is true. It seemed like there was some sort of depressing undertone to the whole story of the girlfriend, which made me a little uncomfortable. Anyone else get that?
Great video, hopefully we can get the whole series. My roommate watched it, one of the ones who doesn't know shit about SC, and he seemed to enjoy it. I mean he sat there and watched it for 43 minutes lol.

i chalk it up to the sacrifices that they both have to make for his dream. its good to show people what boxer has to go through, im sure he would love to spend more time w his gf everyday, but he wants to pursue his dreams and his gf is very supportive of that, she understands how much it means to him and his fans. like boxer said, he could have taken the SKT1 coach job and be very well off, but he feels like he can do more than that.
it will be a very sad day for esports when boxer finally retires. he is what all progamers should aspire to be, not just accomplishments, but the way he carries himself.

I thought it was adorable how they pretty much came off as a team. It's pretty obvious how much he relies on her to support him and take care of him, and there's no doubt in my mind that shes a huge motivational factor behind his play. He even has a ceremony now of kissing his ring after he wins games(which I can only assume came from his g/f). Rather than coming off as being secondary, I thought it showed how much she was necessary for Starcraft to even be possible for him.

Yes it really looks like a true love story. It looks to me that being with her is his greatest prize.
Scripting sometimes feels a bit like commie propaganda but his and her emotions come so on-top of that it's easy to ignore. Her devotion to him is so out of this world, something you can nowdays find in books or movies. It gives me chills even now when i'm writing this post. Just as someone else said, she is his greatest reward. A very touching story humanizing Boxer ("They know my ID better")
Awesome! Thank you translators. I knew his gf had a major part in his revival. I will always be your fan BoxeR! Fighting! Hope you wont be pestered by that annoying shoulder of yours and it will be back to its normal state.

Tendinitis can actually actually get pretty bad, and once you get it it basically doesn't heal, it does get better temporarily but flares back fast once you start using the muscle again. I got it in my hand, and now I can't write more than two pages, before I lose mobility in my hand and am unable to even grip my pen. Imagine if boxer weren't able to play a game more than 5mins, it would be the end of his career.
just finished... coming from wc3 i knew of boxer but not much about him.. this is a really insightful documentary into a progamer's life.... and cant wait to see the new ones!
Being a newb to SC community, i know almost nothing about BW proscene, thus I found this documentary very interesting and enlightening. I havent really rooted for koreans in past, but boxer seems like a really cool guy and deserves all the cheering he can get!

thanks, the part in the vid about 15:30 is where my "experience" took place, that and right after his match. Weird for them interviewing me for about 10 minutes not to include any of it, but ah well, I still made out well enough ^^

Most Koreans are either Christian or Buddhist.
majority of koreans are atheist or no preference. christians are next (catholicism+protestantism) then buddhism.

Just a little fun fact, somewhat related:
Yohwan is the Korean version of "John," John as in John the Baptist, of the Bible. It's not a "Korean" name. Also, apparently BoxeR used to go by "WoodJohn" at one point.
I have a friend named Yohwan/John; he's named that because his dad is a pastor.
As a newcomer to the scene (only started playing with the release of Starcraft 2), I never heard of BoxeR, Nada, or any other korean bonjwa. But, since my "initiation" in the world of Starcraft, I've learned to respect all these players, because of their achievements and their importance to this game that now I love, their importance to eSports, and to the community.
And, after I saw this video, BoxeR's importance grew exponentially! He's not only an amazing player, but an amazing person, as well.
Just want to echo the other posters in thanking everyone who put in work to get this video posted. Excellent job. On the video itself, i found it incredibly revealing and personal. Really looking forward to any future episodes.
His gf is so cute and sweet. I'm really surprised at how much she care about him. I really enjoyed the video, huge thanks to those who translated and subbed this. Can't wait for ep 2!.

It looks like the thing you use to remove like cat hair and stuff from clothes.

What an epic video. Big thanks to the subbers, wow. Having dealt with shoulder injuries myself, I know there are serious business...so his orthopedist visit actually hit me pretty hard.
I mean...wow. If I said I got a little tear-eyed when he said he was doing it for the fans - I hope I'm not the only one :D
this is so cool. I never really knew about boxer too much because i only followed the wc3 pro scene. makes me want to root for him. I hope he does well.
Behind every great man there is a loving wife/girlfriend/woman in general : ) It really warms my heart to see the Emperor back, as well as witnessing the caring relationship he shares with his gal.
This was an amazing watch. Thank you so much for translating and getting this all ready for us! <3 TL!
If you weren't moved by this in some way then I don't think you have a heart or soul. You can't help but be impressed by this man, with his enduring dedication to his fans and overall ability and mental focus. A part of me will always be a complete BoxeR fan no matter what.
I loved the part with peanutsc! His response was great!
Also, this made want to switch back to Terran again (I just recently switched to Protoss).
Can't wait for the next one!
P.S. Question: BoxeR has a ring on his left hand. Is it that his girlfriend and him are engaged and just not married yet?
Edit: I also love how they try to censor where the "R" guy works but then give a massive zoom on the Razer logo of his notebook. Classic.
OMG Thanks alot for this little piece of e-sports history so fucking nice there is a site like Tl out there, with ppl putting so much effort in this just casue they the love the game. THANKS
since i first heard of boxer i immediatly was a fan of him but after this video im not an atheist anymore. Boxer is my GOD...
I´ve never seen any famous person before who is so much aware of the fact that he is what he is he is so sober and still so competitive
That was a nice documentary, was fun to watch. But one thing i can't understand. Why didn't he said something about his pain in the shoulders and such?Healthyness should always stand over fans or whatever.
Holy shit I had tears in my eyes when that fan was waiting for him for a photo post the showmatch. Boxer is the reason I play SC and Love SC. Long live the Emperor. Great job TL
AMAZING! Thanks so much for all the work and time that must have gone into this project. I almost teared up at the part about the Harvard grad saying BoxeR made her proud to be Korean.
Great job with the translation guys, can't wait for episode 2. Very entertaining stuff. Maybe an idea for the Liquid guys to make a 15 minute weekly podcast or something like that about life as a progamer in Korea.
any idea when episode 2 will get subbed? i got my girlfriend to watch episode 1, and she's gotten interested in sc2 because of it. she really likes boxer.
On February 26 2011 09:27 RoseTempest wrote: Teared up, no shame in that right....RIGHT...??
I'm pretty sure most TLers would shed tears watching this or at least be blinking to cure their watery eyes.
It's just what Boxer does. He's one of the few guys who can actually make you react in that way.
P.S. Largely because of this I dug up the TL-translated version of Boxer's autobiography. To be brutally honest, it's not very well-written. However, as a SC/Boxer fan, I'm sure most people would enjoy it (I sure am). It's really short, too, so I'm almost all the way through it even though I just pull it out when eating lunch and stuff (I painfully made each page a PDF, combined them all and then made it into an epub file for my iPhone). The link is possibly somewhere in this thread, but here it is for those of you who don't want to dig for it: clicky clicky!

On March 05 2011 09:15 Axeinst wrote: I wonder, why Boxer had to make his own team? He is the most iconic and very top player, why he is not wanted in any team?
It's not that he isn't wanted in any team, it is because he is so huge that he can creat his own team. Having a team means getting more sponsors and earn more money. Boxer is a great StarCraft player but his days playing SC is getting short. Soon he will probably start a family with his wife who is eight years older than him and that will not combine well with a SC2 career not knowing if you will win or not. Having a team secures income and if you are a coach you will earn a solid wage.
Yeah. But if i have understood right, his team Slayers has not been really succes. Maybe it would be best to join in existing top teams and start playing there. I am sure that team which have Boxer in its lineup, will suddenly find alot of sponsors.
Btw, Boxer is already a millionaire so money is probably not an issue for him anymore.

Boxer have earned a lot of money, but I doubt it is enough to sustain a family for 20+ years. And we also have to take into consideration that SlayerS only have existed about six months, not nearly enough to establish themselves as the top tier team. But they still get people into competitions and GSL have it's share of up and comers from SlayerS.
It is true that a team with Boxer in it would do good on the sponsor aspect, but that would also require him to constantly play and add more pressure to his personal life. With his own team he can take a more passive role as a coach, and there are also coaches and mentors already established among the other teams so it would probably be easier to just make a team of your own. That is what I think any way.

I think, since he is probably multimillionaire, and since he lives in korea. He could just quit from job, and live with his money.

Doesn't imply that he made >$300000 *every* year. And I don't know about Korean income tax, but if it's anything like here, that's a big cut off the top as well. Probably need to find a better source saying he's rich than "he's popular".

Annual earnings are enough source to deduct that he is millionaire. You have the burden to proove this wrong now.

Episode 2! We want it now! maybe some meatloaf to! pls pls pls sub episode 2? also does anyone know for certain how often these episodes are released in Korea?
Very very nice job! I am really looking forward to ep. 2! also I am still looking for his DVD with english subtitles....impossible to find! either way, great video
Really entertaining and informative, it's nice to see a different side of the eSports world. I think as much exposure as we get even now with the GSL,etc. a lot of us in North America are still somewhat in the dark in regards to how eSports and the stars of eSports are viewed in S.Korea. Also interesting to see how Boxer acts/carries his fame and success in comparison to successful mainstream sports celebrities in North America.
Eagerly awaiting episode 2.
Does anyone know what the plan for this series is ? Is it a mini series or is it supposed to be more of a longterm venture?
Why Boxer has had so big downhill since his total domination in brood war?
People claim that he is old, but physically it really cannot be problem yet. Also white-ra is 31 years old and is very good and considered one of the best european players.
I have not heard of lack of practise either, or has he stopped playing so much like he did in early 2000?

Both are different persons, I can only speculate about this, but Boxer had a far more stressful training schedul, and it take more on the body, maybe White-ra's body is more enduranced. and again, just speculating. there more factors then just age alone.

I think another factor is that I think Boxer lives with his fiance and not a pro team. So he does not have the benefit of that kind of "starcraft" lifestyle that he may of once had.

Boxer is the first active progamer to reach 30 year old. The only other active player of similar age is NesTea, and Boxer is 2 years older than him. In Brood War, if you go past 23, your career is usually at the point of rock bottom.
White-ra may be successful abroad, however I find it difficult to believe he is Code S material. Whatever the case may be, historically speaking, age has a direct effect on performance.
In Brood War, there is a team called Air Force E-sport team, consist of military men who wish to continue their progaming career even in the military. Despite at one point almost purely composed of legends, icons and champions, the players are aged and the team always remained at last place.

it will relate to age when you play: Counter Strike: Yes Starcraft 2: No, SC2 gamers have longer life... but it will definitely stop before you reach 99.

Hes been focusing alot on coaching and training his team, but with the better results from his team now he will be focusing more on training. Also he said he kept thinking about switching races and that it was distracting him from playing but now he has got those thoughts out of his head. I think a season in code a will be good for boxer just hope he doesnt have to face MMA in the first round >< doubtful though. I think he will be back in code s within a season or 2 but winning a Code a could be good for bringing some of his confidence back I beleive in boxer and think he will be back on top and (hopefully) win a championship before he retires, that would be so awesome. I mean in season 2 he already placed top 4 and that was really impressive.
Best of luck to boxer in the TSL , im such a boxer fanboy :D
I would really be interested in seeing how the show turns out especially the game against Nada, even though i know the result but you know i wanna see it^^. Hopefully Episode 2 will be subbed by you wonderful people^^. SlayerS fighting

Boxer himself I believe is well aware that he isn't doing so well already and thus, we can see that he has been focusing more on developing his disciples rather than himself.

BoxeR has been, and always will be my hero for StarCraft. He's awesome, I don't care what anyone says. This documentary was a pleasure to watch, mad props for the translation, and I am eagerly awaiting the next translation.
thanks for the link. very much enjoyed it. it's crazy how much pressure BoxoR puts on himself. always wanting to suceed, to please the fans, to meet their expectations. very intesting to hear that he is having to play at least 30 games a day (which is a whole day) just to keep up with other players now, while in his prime he played about 18-20 games a day. he wants to play more and get better, but it's unfortunate that other obligations and his injury are preventing him from practicing that much. he was very emotional about the GSL 2 quarter final win vs NaDa, his long time rival (NaDa actually had a better head-to-head record until then), and that's when i understood why MKP almost got teary eyed after beating MC. these programmers don't play these games just for fun or money; it's basically their life.
the show ends with his comments about how fans are the reason why there is an esport culture in Korea, and something along the line of "boxor will always be THE Emperor regardless of his win-loss ratio"
I have just finished watching Boxer's Wing Ep 2 in Chinese subtitles and it was as awesome as first (despite last 2 minutes of the video was corrupted...)
I'm wondering how's the English translation team doing? If progress are still far from complete, I am happy to do a transcript of Chinese to English translation. I'm no good with video manipulation so it'll just be a text file with time stamps and rough translations in English... would anyone be interested by it?? I'll do it if there's demands for it.

I'm no good with video manipulation so it'll just be a text file with time stamps and rough translations in English... would anyone be interested by it?? I'll do it if there's demands for it.

If you have access to the Chinese subtitles or the transcript what I've seen sub groups do is they take the Chinese subtitles in that form. I think they take Chinese because it get's translated faster there, more people active in subbing or something? Could by any language I guess, and then they run it through a software translator that will do the bulk of the translations. Think you can use an online translator if you can input the text nicely. I've never done it so I'm just speculating on the actual method.
What you get after translating it through software still has all the timings hopefully, if that didn't get messed up with the software translation and then it becomes "easy" to share it with people who can each take a part of say 5 - 10 minutes, depending on if you are able to split and combine the workload in such small fragments efficiently, and they can easily "fix" the terrible software translations like: "Micro good show very Boxer, legend he be" to "Boxer shows good micro, he is a legend."
And then the final stage of quality control has a person comfortable with the korean language watch the fixed software subtitles and can apply final adjust in context that have gotten lost in translation: "Here Boxer shows us crazy sick micro skills, he is a real legend after all." To something like that.
The method discribed above is taken from darksmurfsubs, who I think "invented" the method, and where he made an online "Web Subtitle Editor". Its main use is for allowing anyone to contribute and edit lines of the translation in a similar fashion to how the wikipedia system works. An "admin" or someone with privileges can then "lock" changes in or choose user made changes who you should see more as "suggestions" since they aren't final otherwise one could easily sabotage all the work.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that with translations, if you have 3 people translate you get 3 different translations. Some groups sub in more of a telegram style, some leave out tiny popups on screen the production put in like two people are talking and one person looks confused, they put "He looks confused" on it, others try and do it really methodical at the expense of time. What I'm trying to say with this last paragraph is that it really doesn't matter that much if the translation is perfect and I think you can come a really long way with implementing a system like discribed above, if anything it appears to be an efficient way to sub and as we all know, it takes a lot of time.
I'm not sure anymore why I wrote this but I'm not gonna delete it. Time for some coffee, Enjoy [TL Subs] fighting! :D
