Q: What should I be posting about? A: Basically, anything you want to talk about but aren't sure if it warrants a topic of its own. Heard a rumour you want to share? A new video? A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching? A brilliant new idea that you want to vet, to make sure it's really as brilliant as you think it is?
This is the place.
Note: Posting standards will not be as high as if you were to make a new thread, but pointless spam will still not be tolerated. I have seen threads like these work out alright on other sites (for other games) so I figured, why not give it a shot? It's possible there's not really enough content for something like this to exist at this point in time, but no harm then, it will just die on its own.
What is the appropriate response to early zergling pressure as Protoss player?
In context, this would be a Protoss player scouting with his 9 supply probe and finding the Zerg player doing something like a 13 pool into expand. How can I, as the Protoss player, take advantage of the Zerg's early pressure?
Any quick warp gate strategy is basically negated by early speedlings, and a 3 gate expand is put under serious flak by speedlings and possible roach pushing. How can fight this correctly?
When should I scout in zvz? I usually go on 14 gas 14 pool but frequently I get hit by 9 or 10 pools and even a couple 7 pools. When I do, I usually lose, even with my drone advantage. By the time I get rid of the lings my enemy, has roaches and and expansion otw. I usually scout at 12. Platinum btw.
I want hunterseekermissle buffed or changed entirely. Think of how crucial science vessels were in TvZ in BW. How often so terran palyers build ravens these days? What way would you buff/change hunterseekermissle?

Make it unavoidable and reduce damage and energy cost.
Ravens just need to be experimented with more. 2 PDDs vs Protoss means a load less damage taken, same for vs T. Versus Zerg they can help with both Anti- creep and defence against Mutalisk, threatening with HSM when they clump and using PDD to cover the Marines. Becoming a more manouvrable Thor.
As a low diamond terran with decent macro but poor micro, which areas should I focus on first? Dropping? Army concave? Unit composition w/ ability micro (ie: EMP, PDD, etc)?

Well, SC2 isn't brood war, and I feel like the Ghost actually replaces the Science Vessel, considering the Ghost now has anti-bio Sniper rounds as well as the EMP.
The Raven is pretty strong as it is I think, they're pretty gas heavy so you're not going to normally be seeing a lot of them. PDD's neutralize Protoss' main Anti-Air units, namely the Stalker and the Phoenix, as well as Hydralisks. Auto-turrets can be used to choke down passageways, harass mineral lines, as well as just be dependable DPS in battles. Seeker Missiles are strong, and making them any better would break the game. They used to be much stronger, and Terran players could simply mass Ravens with Seeker Missile and win the game. Seeker Missile as it is is already quite strong.
Random aside: Does anyone know why they changed the name from Hunter Seeker Missile to Seeker Missile?
The game Warhammer 40,000 has a vehicle mounted weapon called the 'Hunter Seeker Missile.' And Given the similarities from WH40k to SC2 I think that either would call copyright on anything like that.
I have a question about the ranking/league system. I'm currently in a Silver division, ranked #1 and i've been there for a few weeks now. I've been winning about 80% of the games I play against other Silver leagued players and about 60% against gold ranked players it puts me up against. I've been expecting it to put me into gold for a few days now but I'm still sitting here in silver. Does anyone have any insight into how their ranking system works in terms of changing leagues?

There are a bunch of threads about how the ranking system works, and you can look those up in the search. ExcaliburZ i believe has written most of them and theyre very reliable. If you don't want to read those then it basically boils down to MMR, and we don't know how to calculate MMR.

I can give you a quick explanation: If you play in silver division and you get a much higher winrate than 50% (70%+ maybe I'm not sure) then you will be matched up against gold division players. If you win 50% there you will be promoted to gold, if you win <50% you will start meeting silver players again and if you win >50% you will meet Platinum players. And depending on how good you play against platinum you will either get promoted to platinum or gold. So just play, you will soon get promoted. Rank #1 has nothing to do with anything actually since that just means you have used more bonus pool than other silver players or you are placed in a pretty crappy division.
EDIT: This is not 100% accurate information, just wanted to give you an overview on how the division system works.

Theorycrafting, but I'm guessing Phoenix play. Easy transition at that point, and he's not going to have much to deal with it. You can do some nasty things.

I actually really like 3gate expanding versus speedling pressure. It's pretty easy to hold a lot of things with just well placed forcefields and not expanding until the pressures over. The more zerglings they make, the further behind they get if you can keep your ramp defended. As long as you keep making probes, once the pressure if over its pretty safe to expand. I typically get one zealot and then a bunch of sentries. If I see roaches or speedlings, I get ready to forcefield and get more zealots/stalkers as needed. Then get more sentries and you naturally get the build up of minerals to take your expansion.
What do you feel the best answer to late game mass thor (10+) is in pvt? Immortals and voids get crushed by them, I am thinking colossus plus storm w/ chargelot + stalker. Should I include a few immortals though? Maybe a few voids to abuse the long AA cooldown of thors? What proportions and mix is optimal? Is there a better composition for dealing with this? Since you have probably done more experimentation with high level mech in pvt than most, I figured you would know what beats it. Against Mass Thors, I'm guessing Void Immortal HT with a few zealots mixed in. Void rays can take down the thors while immortals are tanking the cannons, HTs can melt the marines while zealots serve as some decent DPS and Tank.
my question is actually technical.. in my shared folder on my computer there is a blizzard folder? and in it are a couple 4 more folders listed as battle.net, blizzard downloader and two others.. and inside the battle.net folder, there is a cache folder and in that there are 258 different folders labeled 00,01,02,1a,1b,1c etc each with a subfolder of its own filled with other docs... and every time i play sc2 online, i get like ~20 new documents that cannot be opened.....
is this normal? can i delete these documents? is there something that i clicked somewhere that saves files like that? thanks... i just hate when i search my "today" folder and have to go through 75 random documents to find the one thing i need. also if this is in the wrong section i apologize but could not find the answer.
I've got a question about dealing with early pressure. I've been finding that in the lower leagues a lot of people seem to resort to all in sort of strategies. And initially my problem with it was that I'd just lose. I wouldn't have an adequate force to deal with what was sent at me. And through learning different timings and some building placement I feel like I've learned to deal with that early pressure and not lose to it specifically. But now I come to a problem where I seem to end up just losing later in the game. I've mainly experienced this today, actually, and I can say that a few of the games I lost were due to some mistakes that I had made. But in a lot of them I'm losing just because I'm getting out produced/they are getting more upgrades than I am.
I am imagining it will all come with playing the game and developing my own style of dealing with it, but its getting to be a bit angering to say the least. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, my economy is stronger and I'm spending the minerals as I'm getting them. I just feel like people have some sort of handicap on me and I don't know why lol.
I apologize if this seems more like a rant than a question, but its really getting on my nerves and I wanted to see if other people had found ways to deal with this themselves.
GSL question: I'm planning a holiday to South Korea in late April/early May, and was hoping to attend a GSL match or two while I'm there. Ideally I'd like to be there for something like the week of Ro16's or the quarter-finals of S class. However I'm finding that info about when the GSL April/May tourneys are happening pretty scarce.

3 gate expand (1 zealot + sentries) into forge, while getting stalkers. 1-2 cannons at expo with more if needed.
sentry/stalker with a couple zealots can take on speedlings really well with forcefields, especially if he's the one commiting. if he skips roaches then it could be ling muta and i would throw down more gates do a +1 timing attack. otherwise poke around and force units while macroing yourself into collosus/stalker/sentry.
I've been thinking about the seeker missle as well. I've been thinking of using it with thors to defend against mass mutalisks. The problem is the ridiculously mobile mutas vs a bomb that moves slower than fat kids in gym class.

Is there any specific build order, or a liquipedia article on this 3gate sentry expand? I've been hearing a lot about it but I have never actually learned the build order.
What does everyone think about the millions of maps right now?
GSL has their own maps, blizzard is releasing their own new maps as seen in the PTR and of course, ICCUP maps are fairly popular in online tournaments.
I think more maps is good. even a ton of different maps is good. I expect we will go from a super tiny map pool to potentially a large map pool as different tournaments try different sets of map.
I expect after a while that tournaments will mostly standardize around specific maps that are pretty popular and assumed as balanced. In all this, I think what I'm most worried about is definitely how hard it will be to find opponents to play these new maps. The ladder system makes it very easy to find players for the Blizzard map pool but there is not equivalent for custom maps (yet... I hope)

I actually think that Blizzard should have just found a way to use the ones that are being released for the GSTL. I love the look of those maps. But again, until I have a chance to play on them, I can't say too much. However, I think that it should greatly improve the amount of balance that is being seen in the current map pool (Blistering Sands, Steppes, Jungle Basin, and Delta come to mind)
I still don't get it why the Marines start with 45HP while other starting units have excatly the same stats as in bw. Nothing has changed for the Zerglings and Zealots even got nerfed from 100HP/60Shields to 100HP/50Shields cuz of the improved Shields reg. to compensate that. (As a Protoss player myself i must say that this improved Shield reg. is so damn stupid cuz it never actually had that much of an impact on my games. All I can do is simply to attack move with them and hope that they dont get shredded to pieces cuz retreating with Zealots on Creep/against Speedlings or Stalkers + Marines with Stim or Marauders with Concussive......its always the dead end for a zealot so this improved Shield reg is kinda non effective....but well....)
The Offical reasoning behind the 45HP Marine + 10HP Combatshields was to make the Marines more effective during mit to late games, but the point is they already were good in these situations. Do they rly need those additional 5HP right at the start ? I would rather prefer a vanilla Marine with 40 HP + 15 HP Combat Shield Upgrade because that sounds more reasonable to me than the old shit.
I was begging so long for this change but it never ever has appeared in the patch logs. Replays of pros always supported my Idea cuz Marine/hellions pushes are so damn strong, Zealots & Zerglings needed an additional swipe to kill the Marine, list goes on...
I was even laughing hardcore where you, Jinro, actually won the last game against IdrA where he tried to 6 pool you and you built that bunker in your mineral line and got that 5HP Marine into that bunker in the very last second. Artosis even mentioned that IdrA had analysed your scouting pattern on that map and IdrA was sending his Zerglings around your scouting route....well IdrA gg'ed after the Marine was safe.
I'am the only one who thinks that this 45HP Marine is to strong in beginng or do you guys think that the Zealot need his former self back ?

Even though marines' have 5 more hp than their bw counterpart, i don't think that's the main issue. The main issue is that their dps is SOO much higher. Add hold micro and stim, and it gets to the point of being ridiculous.
Hm... Katari has been a huge name on NA server, but the problem is... I can't find him on TSL tournaments This 3k game played toss and still managed to have win ratio 60%+ is beastly I have always wondered if I am going to see this guy in major tourney's But... nope... can't find it...
Is anyone else surprised there isn't a huge, well written thread analysing the new PTR blizzard maps? I've been checking here every day since the announcement, and it's like no-one's talking about them.

There's a lot that you can do if a Zerg opts to open with early Zergling pressure. The first thing that I'll have you note is that it doesn't actually "negate quick warpgate strategies" as you say. The truth is, the slower a Zerg gets their expo up, the harder it's going to be for them to hold off any sort of aggression that you deal. It really depends on what kind of damage he can do with his speedlings, which really should be none at all. There's a reason why opening with speedling pressure against Protoss is not standard. It really can't do much to a walled in Protoss.
That being said, I'm not actually a fan of early warpgate attacks such as the infamous 4 warpgate rush. Thankfully(!) there are plenty of options that you can do instead. For example, if he wants to open with speedling pressure and you opened with a forge expansion, he shouldn't be able to do much damage with well placed buildings. This will put him very far behind. I usually opt for that opening.
Other openings are 3 warpgate sentry expand, as others have said. Note that with a 3 warpgate sentry expand, you really should not make a forge and cannons because you can hold off aggression pretty easily, so cannons are just wasted money. Investing in the forge and cannons would essentially kill the point of making the 3 warpgates, so you might as well have gone Nexus first if you wanted the forge with cannons.
If you enjoy stargate aggression, speedling pressure openings are something that you really would rather see than not see because that means that with the slower expansion, they will not have more than 2 queens (if that even). They won't be teching because they're investing their money in aggression and an expansion, teching as well would only be suicide. They likely won't have their main connected to their natural because they need as many larva as they can get to support speedlings, especially when considering their slower expansion.
A Dark Templar opening could be potentially very effective too. It's highly unlikely that he would decide to build a spore crawler unless he really smells DTs coming like NesTea did in season 2 against MC (though I highly doubt that you play against Zergs that are as good as NesTea). Again, like I've said before, he should not have been teching so he won't be able to make an overseer.
Just remember that if he can't get into your base with the speedlings and deal damage, then he's behind simply due to his costly opening. All that a speedling pressure opening would negate is any form of 2-gate zealot or 2-gate stalker opening pre-warpgate tech. If you were planning that before the game and you see 14 gas 13 pool or something like that, you'll probably do better not to continue with your 2-gate strategy.

I know their normal dps is higher, but if im not mistaken they were nerfed in the stim department. Stim in BW increased the DPS more then it does now.
I don't know if this is to place to post this, but I'm wondering, is there a armored unit in the world at the moment that does basically does what a siege tank does? A unit that can serve as both a tank and also artillary like siege tank? Or is it even possible with today's technology?

Archon toilet ... if you think I am trolling, I am masters protoss player. Lots of players underestimate Mothership, its really good, its best unit for me. I use it in PvP and PvT and barely lost macro games.
If its not that late, colossi with thermal lance and some meatshield to absorb damage (I'd recommend zealots because of their cost, wouldn't recommend immortals due to their mobility and u can just make Colossi out of your robotics). Also mass thor lacks mobility so abuse warp prism play
Has anyone else noticed that when you go on your character page in bnet and look at your division the names are compeletely mixed up and even switch randomly everytime you refresh? The points and wins are still correct but the names are just random.
So what is the best PvZ strategy you can think of? Also, what strategy do you do in TvT to avoid a midmap Tank Viking Standoff?

you play a marine marauder medivac heavy drop game, and harsh harrass of the mineral line etc. It's really hard to avoid. but Think Marineking is all I can say

I actually have an extremely hard time believing that void rays would lose to thors, unless you clump the void rays up into a little ball so that they get splashed.... If you just magic box them like you would magic box mutas, you should absolutely annihilate thors.
To the protoss out there: if you 1-Gate FE vs terran, what do you usually transition to and when? I like to get 2 more gates up and the robo to colossi, personally, because I'm not the best at spreading my templar.

I actually have an extremely hard time believing that void rays would lose to thors, unless you clump the void rays up into a little ball so that they get splashed.... If you just magic box them like you would magic box mutas, you should absolutely annihilate thors.
Did you see Artosis's Code A qualifier?
That's because artosis didn't upgrade air and was grossly outnumbered, let alone be similar in resources invested. Vr is a fine counter to thors as long as upgrades are roughly even.
Sooo, what was the point of having two zergs talking about imbalanced protoss for 30 minutes? Would Team Liquid consider doing the same thing, but ignoring imbalances and just talk... so I guess its not about imbalance, just about starcraft. So not the same thing at all.
I recently bought a EU version of the game off bnet. A few days later, the account got deactivated and I got a refund. I don't think I used a real address. Does blizzard check that stuff? What do I need to do to actually buy an EU copy off bnet?

They apparently have a Korean version up, but I don't see an international one yet. I guess it's mostly due to the language thing, though it may still appear, dunno.

If Thors arent supported by vikings, the best counter is carriers, or mothership. Mothership + archons vs thors = rape. You get a few archons in there with the thors, then they pop out together and bam 10 thors gone in .6 seconds.
Mothership is actually pretty damn good in general, if you can get a recall off vs a meching terran it can be game, no spidermines to fuck with you in this game and mech doesnt re-position well.
tell the guy that interplanatar interaction is pivotal to terrans variety of optionitudals in the pre-midgame preperatories as well as the protosstinal deterriggation of elite zergling strikes - Stimey n Formerly FrozenArbiter
so... what the hell does this mean to the general public?
What did you guys think of Squirtle's mothership usage vs MVP in the GSTL finals? I kept thinking he would use it to abuse mobility like KiWiKaKi does.
What opener tvz do you have the most success with? I 2 raxed for quite a while but as zergs became accustomed to the timings (blue flame hellion transition, blue flame hellion BEFORE expand, blue flame hellion AND banshee, 5 rax, you name it) I started to get the feeling that I had before which was that terran attacks past midgame are essentially all in vs zerg because if you lose a significant part of your army (unless you are at their frontdoor) they will outproduce you and eventually run you over.
Ive been going 1-1-1 with banshee then viking for scouting and it seemed to do well. The reasoning is that I can get my tanks quicker for a faster midgame push as well as getting a raven out for killing creep spread. The downside is it STILL feels like midgame is a bit of an all in. Sheth told me he felt 2-rax was still the best build but it just doesnt seem like it. 1 rax expand makes me feel like i get stuck in my base forever and Im playing blind essentially.
Also do you ever win cross positions metal vs zerg? :D
Squirtle used vortex on the front tank line of MVP. I noticed he let a couple of zealots get sucked in. The vortex probably sucked in 4 tanks and some other units. Right as the units popped back out of the vortex, the zealots were targetted by the back tank line and most of MVP's units inside the vortex got direct splash damage and died. Squirtle even stormed it but it was a little delayed reaction.
I'm wondering, does the tank split in siege mode after coming out of a vortex? I don't see how a siege tank will move apart like that.
Random thought: Does anyone else think that roaches are too fast after the speed upgrade? Off and on creep ... By lowering their speed AND increasing hydra's speed, especially off-creep would be more fair, in my opinion. What do you people think?

What would be your ideal composition vs late game Protoss with carrier/ht/mothership? I would like to hear your opinion on late game TvP army strength.
Blizzard need to step up and hire some progamers to help them balance the game asap? This is gettign out of hand. The company has enugh resoures and man power to balance this god damn game already.
Is anybody else having this issue today? Just lost 3 ladder games in a row which I was quite a bit ahead in before I rage quit from this. It's not a local network issue.
I felt this didn't warrant its own thread, but I would love an answer ASAP from a Terran:
How do I cope with playing Mech? Sometimes I feel like there is just so much shit going on that I just get overwhelmed. Everything is so slow paced, that so much money just builds up. Not to say I am not macroing good, but coming from playing Toss I'm trying to micro my units that simply don't need to be micro'd that hard.
Basically, how do you cope with siege tanks + defensive structures + expanding + macro as a mech terran? It just seems so overwhelming.

vs a heavy siege tank army, you can go mass immo. If it's a more thor-heavy mech army, then you can go carrier if money allows or vr. It is VERY important to go double core immediately and get your air upgrades as soon as you can afford it.

I play a version of mech marine/thor/banshee later adding tank/viking against zerg. The key to my mech play is the banshee where it is used as a mobile harassment and defensive force (e.g. against run-bys and drops). Banshees are also very high dps against roaches.
I really don't know where to put his, so I figured the general discussion thread was a good start (and I am prepared for the backlash). You know what really grinds my gears? No, it's not mechanical friction or lack of lubricant but the players that do not concede to an obvious defeat.
That's right.

Well, SCV's have 45 hp instead of 60.
Is that ok with you?
EDIT- ok, to expand a bit more on this to sound a bit less dickly...
Marines nowadays got it tough compared to Broodwar (ok, not ACTUALLY true, but bear with me here, hehe). We gotta deal with larvae injected mass ling pump, early banes and early roaches. Our buddy SCV's got less health and medics now require starport tech. And 5 hp is somehow too much?
Hey guys, I wanted to ask about UNITS that control space. I keep hearing on SotG that there aren't a lot of units that can control space like those lurkers do in BW. I'd like to know more about it. I play Z most of the time and I've found that only infestors (fungal with energy upgrade) and a decent mass of mutas would help me conserve larva and keep army size low while I whore out on drones. I just wanted to get more feedback regarding this. most of my losses come when my opponents just have so much more shit than i could manage to macro up against..
i dont really know when to take my third although ive noticed that after 18+ mins, most games thati win is when i manage to keep up with their production with a macro hatch.
just wanted to try if i could get some feedback here since this post doesnt really warrant a big thread.
I love zerg and i simply enjoy the macro mechanic, but i mostly lose. I've been considering switching races but i have second thoughts because i love playing zerg so much. but i just cant seem to get good at it. teetering at the edge of silver is not much fun. (bronze was fun)

How much production can a fully saturated Terran base support? I know it can support 3-rax, but I'm unsure of what happens when I get other structures.
Also, when should I get my second gas for a 1/1/1 build? I seem to get it too early and my minerals end up being too low and I am hovering around 400 gas for alot of the early game. I think my issue is that the starport + factory take up so much gas, so I get that second gas early just to get those two building up and running, but then I start getting overflow with gas.
Are the GSTL maps actually more balanced then Blizzard ones? I'm hearing so much about how they're protoss favored, and pro Zergs and Terrans are complaining. Is that because the metagame is shifting towards protoss, or are the GSTL maps bad?

Blizzard balancing the game on their small poorly designed maps was bad. Blizzard should be balancing around GSTL maps and incorporating them into the ladder but good ole acti-blizz is too proud.

Yes agreed. With GSTL maps, marines arnt as overpowered in the early game. And alot more time for zerg to respond.
I was watching an interview Dustin Bowder (Head game developer for SC2) had in the late 2007. This was when they were working on Protoss.

So.... I've been thinking what skill it takes for protoss to control their units? Just curious you guys got ideas? All I got is A attacking

Forcefields, blink stalker micro, storms, feedback, void ray/phoenix micro. Now you may say "LAWL anybody can do that", but try doing all those things while macroing up at your base, defending against drops, taking map control, deciding how to tech up etc.

According to the schedule GOM gave out back in Jan, I thought the next GSL was supposed to start soon. Am I wrong? Did they announce it being pushed back or something? Because I don't see it on the calender.
I'm going back to my 'ranking' question. I am still in the silver league, but now all of my opponents (with only a few exceptions) are either gold or platinum. I've even seen a diamond player, who I beat. Why is it giving me these opponents but not ranking me up? I'm still winning most of my games, but its not putting me into the next league. What gives?
Also, on a brief side note. Colossus + Void Rays = Win, apparently. I had a roughly 160 food army of stalkers, zlots and immortals against someone with about 8 void rays and 3 colossi with a few gateways units and he WRECKED me. I even had 2-2-1 upgrades where he was 1-0-0 ground and 0-0-0 air. Something seems wrong with this picture to me.

You will be promoted when the system is confident of your skill lvl. If you beat gold and platinum it wont be sure until you go 50/50 or close to that. I was in a similiar situation not long ago, was beating plat and some diamond players as gold but didn't rank up. Then i finally got the promotion after loosing like 5 in a row (vs plat)
Hi guys, justa quick question: Building a macro hatch with an extra queen as a solution to missing injects in order to make up for "lost" production, would this be alright? or is this learning wrong?
im really a casual player but would like to get into platinum and stay there.
there is nothing wrong about a macro hatch if your inject timing is lacking, as long as you are aware that you normally wouldn't get it if you macro correctly and that this would be the optimal way to play.
if your money floats high ingame, say yourself "damn i fucked it up again" and throw down the extra hatch, there is no point in then not doing it and loose the game with many minerals in the bank with you just not being able to keep up the production for learning purposes.
On February 15 2011 05:32 bluehunter wrote: why do/did HuK and Mana scout cross positions on delta quadrant first now? anything I am missing or is it just timings they have calculated??
I don't know anything about their scouting or DQ in particular, but one general reason you'd scout cross positions first is that you plan to play differently in close positions than in far ones. That means you need to know as fast as possible whether they're close or far, and scouting one of the two close positions doesn't tell you that. Scouting the only far position does.

This doesn't warrent its own thread so here will do.. I was wondering if someone could tell me if there is a way that i can check my win/loss ratio verse certain races, i have a general idea at the moment but it would be cool if i could check the numbers.
I have no real idea where to post this so I guess this thread might work.
Let me preface this by saying that I live in a really small town in Montana. Not many people play SC here and as hard as I've tried, I've only managed to get a few people to play casually.
The problem I seem to be having is a lack of support/someone to motivate me to get better. I've always had a huge friend-base while playing MMOs and SSFIV is huge amongst my friends (which I also compete at) but SC2 is feeling pretty empty atm.
I'm looking for people to not only practice with (I'm stuck in Platinum due to poor but slowly improving mechanics), but also to talk strategy with, general SC, video games etc...really just want a core group of e-friends (sounds soooo sad....) who also take the game seriously to help me learn, to match my enthusiasm for the game so that I feel the need to practice more etc...I'm just better with friendly competition I guess.
Starcraft can feel pretty lonely when you just ladder all day, trying to improve but no one to talk about it with or even brag about my new accomplishments to. Day9 daily #100 really made me realize this. Anyone out there feel similar or feel like helping a fellow nerd out? Even chatting about on here would help me greatly, thanks!

It seems the blizz post was edited, He changed it from:
I think that if Blizzard doesnt include the GSL maps in the ladder reset or future patch, that they are essentially just shooting themselves in the foot. With GSL using their own maps, that are not playable on blizzard ladder, you will see tons of the very best players literally stop playing ladder games, and only doing customs with their teammates. Why would blizzard want to create such a seperation from their ladder, when they could just act like any other company with good enough sense, and implement the GSL maps so that top players can just continue to ladder as usual.
Why create a rift in the gaming community, and basically seperate the players that are competing in your OWN tournament, from everyone else. It just doesnt make any sense at all imo.
I think as a protoss player you can pretty much dictate how the early stages of PvZ plays out... I play zerg and I just want to make drones as long as I can without dying, so either you FE and stay in the economic race or you do some 3 gate expand or other aggression builds.

Well, I don't play Terran, but I think a good way to practice, is to have a large group of marines, move them all in one direction, and make very quick and thin rectangular boxes on the outside of the group on either the sides or the top of bottom. Then move the few guys you grabbed then take another slice adn rinse and repeat.
If you're having problems with accuracy, just create a game against a super eary computer and do it over and over again.

I wonder you guys what do you think with something i saw from sheth's and minigun's stream where dayvie asking if they should remove the storm upgrade from the game, because it may be OP in the new maps(i cant say wich, this is what he wrote). I'm not sure this to be a great idea. It hurt pretty badly the late game for toss, not that it weak right now, it is really strong. However it make our main choice do deal with mass mmm or just mass hydra really hard to deal with if you don't want to get colo, who can be really ez countered by viking. Yes storm will still be in the game, but it will be kind of a buff to EMP because if you got you're army emp'ed this will remove your storm for a while. I rather see maybe a nerf for the amount given or the cost/ time research
On a bit of a losing streak now, looks like I can't get a break. Go for drops and FML but he decides to randomly build TWO turrets extremely early in the game. The iEchoic TvT is really making my life miserable
I've been tempted to make a thread about this, but can't see any positive or decent discussion being generated around it.
I'm getting really sick and disheartened by the standards of gameplay that most SC2 players expect from the game. Games that don't go to 3+ bases and last 40 minutes are all seen as garbage, players who excel in the early game are hated on because "they can't play a macro game", maps are being made excessively large to force the first 15 minutes of every game to be essentially irrelevant, and creativity in everything but unit composition is balked at, with people having a standard way they believe every matchup should be played, with perhaps 3-4 build variations for each matchup that are "acceptable", doing anything different is instantly seen as "putting yourself behind in the macro game" which is the only thing that people consider skillful.
I play Z, and it's incredibly frustrating sometimes seeing the ease of which the other 2 races can accomplish things that Z must work very hard for, but I don't think Z is unbalanced, I think people just refuse to be creative, they macro, and the other player macros, then they lose to the other player because Z armies are intrinsically weaker by design than T or P, and lack large threat single units like collosus.
IdrA for example, is seen as a hero by most Zergs, yet is the most unimaginative and boring Zerg player, and consequently has the most to complain about, he plays SC2 Z like they're BW Z, his unit comp is very telling of this.
It's starting to get frustrating that people expect the game to simplify to a small set of "the right builds", and have every game be 3+ base macro games on gigantic maps, because that's fun. I think the best thing about Starcraft, as opposed to other RTS games, is that there is threat all throughout the game, there is early game, midgame, and lategame, and all play differently, and that's cool. Most players just want to eliminate early game and midgame and only play the lategame, which is a waste of most of the fun of the game.
The thing about this that makes it so unbelievable is that the biggest hero of lower skilled players, Day9, constantly refuses to talk about imbalance and is always looking for innovation in the game, in BW, people said that the APM barrier to entry meant that mechanics were rewarded above creativity by a significant factor, but now this barrier has been lowered/removed, the players all just want everyone to play Standard Games.

I also saw the question on Sheth's stream but didn't watch Minigun's. Maybe I missed part of the question, but I interpreted it quite differently than you. I thought he was implying that the storm wouldnt need to be upgraded to have, not that it's function or use would be changing/removed. But like I said, maybe I missed part of the conversation (I only remember the first question, Kiwi saying that'd be good, and then somehow they got on DTs.)
I have a question: Why are there technical problems in the gsl so frequently? I personally have never seen anyone drop out of a game, or dropped out myself. (played more than 500 games)
am i the only person who didnt know you could land on other peoples addons as terran (even enemies) and use them? lmao i just did a 2v2 and sent a scouting barracks to this guy and as he lifted i landed my barracks and started pumping 2 marines out /// also i find it sort of weird how you cant repair your allies units after you are eliminated.

I agree and disagree with some things:
1. I agree that I disagree with all hate on cheese or all-ins or rushes, etc. It's part of the game and a win is a win (even if the game/maps is or was imbalanced, it isn't against the rules to abuse the imbalances such as close spawning positions TvZ).
2. I disagree with big maps being limited to huge macro matches.
While not the same game, there were plenty of times in SC1 (even in the big maps) where there were rushing, proxies, cheeses, etc.
While not the same game, it's possible in SC2 too. We'll just see how the next GSL goes with more of the bigger maps being played.
Big maps do not necessarily "force" games to be long macro but it rather it discourages (not prevents) those early all-ins and rushes we've been seeing previous on the smaller maps.
On paper, this means it should actually increase the variety but we'll have have to see next GSL where more of the maps are being played.
I'm not sure if this deserves a topic at its own, that's why I will post this here.
I started playing SC2 some time ago, and after a bit of practise I am now in Platinum. The BO's I used (1 for each race I play against) were mostly made up by myself and thus contained a lot of flaws.
I would like the following builder orders:
1 rax FE against Zerg. 3 rax (1/2 with tech lab) into contain > expand and get vikings asap, against Protoss. A decent all-around build order for a TvT mirror. I currently use some kind of 2-1-1 which works fine but there should be better. I would like you to tell me aswell what the weak points are of those build orders and their strong points. For example, I have no idea when I should NOT 1 rax FE when playing against a Zerg.

How does one create a thread on here? I have a quick question on hotkeys. I was trying to edit my camera position hotkeys in Mac OS X. I've disabled system keys in the settings menu and also have the function keys operating normal by configuring that in System Preferences under Keyboard.
Whenever I try to move Camera position one hotkey from CMD+F5 to CMD+F2 or anything else, the CMD key doesn't register. I can't do any new hotkeys with CMD, it seems. I can set it to OPT+F2 just fine or SHI+F2. But I want to use CMD because that is what I use for everything else.

:/

3+ bases and 40 mins don't go hand in hand. 3+ bases is ok but 40 mins would be map split unless you have qxc and aggro player #2 duking it out trading bases like its a tv show on tlc
players who excel in the late game excel just as much as a player who excels in the early game the difference is that the late game player can now play an early game or a late game if he so chooses. mvp can cheese it out or mvp can play a macro game. bit by bit used to be able to cheese but as he is an inferior player he can't even do either well now. that is what happens to 1 dimensional players.
creativity is discouraged because it is generally 1 time builds/unit comps that are countered within a week of release. carriers won 1 game of gsl but players don't choose to go carriers every game. it is not that every protoss is stubborn it is just hard to get it to work.

nobody is stopping you from playing creative. you can do any strategy you want. do you choose not to play those strategies because they are weak or don't get you far? do you choose not to play those strategies because you want to copy someone elses creative build? that wouldn't be creative at all
you can play any strategy you like but it sounds like you want everyone else to play the strategy you like too

I am having such a hard time spending all my minerals as zerg. I like to drone very very heavily at the start of the game and go Muta/Ling off of 3 base. But I'm always out of gas yet have an insane flow of minerals coming in. I can't spend it all on Lings, my injects are pretty darn good so it's not that. I throw up Evos, extra hatches etc.. and still end up with 1k+ minerals and 0 gas. What can I do?
I recently started playing Zerg and I like the idea of the backspace trick. However backspace is way to far to the right side of the keyboard for me to use efficiently.(im such a noob T_T)
I was thinking of changing the Base Camera hotkey from backspace to tilde or space. as far as I can tell these keys aren't used for anything, but just to make sure, are they?

If you disable a hotkey it will usually tell you what you disable I think and you can always click something to return the original hotkey to that button I think. Mr Bitter says he uses W which isnt a problem as long as you dont mind switching hotkeys when you playprotoss (w is warp gates even as zerg -____-) I personally use grid hotkey style for ALL upgrades QWER. Little off topic tho

If you still have too many minerals after throwing down a macro hatch, just build another one. Or else, just try to expand anywhere on the map. If it works, you could get the extra gas, and if it fails, you wouldn't have needed the minerals anyway.
Edit: Spore-/Spinecrawlers if you can get any use of them are another possibility, however they cost 1 larva each so I'm not sure if that actually helps you that much.

Yeah I suppose I could try to expand more but I still feel like it's impossible to spend minerals, maybe I should just go roach hydra every match, most minerals I can spend I believe, but I like the map control I get with Mutas. Maybe I should be getting my gases faster....I will experiment but any other advice would be great!
Side Question: Is Muta/Ling viable until hive tech? More specifically, is getting a million lings with my excess minerals a poor investment or should I just pump out a billion?
That very much depends on what you are facing. If you are up against a 2basing Protoss on LT for example, and he gets a shitload of colossi up, zerglings don't really have any use, as long as he is playing defensively. You can't do run-bys, and in a direct confrontation the zerglings just melt to colossi. That would be a situation where you could decide to build something else than muta/ling, e.g. roaches - that would fit the situation better and you'll be able to spend most of your leftover minerals.
If you're up against someone who uses blink-stalker or some immortal build, there's nothing I can see that'd speak against massing zerglings anyway. At the least, it would make him waste forcefields.
Against Terran, I'm not so sure. If they have a lot of tanks and marines, zerglings just get teared apart so fast, I'm not sure if it's worth building them. On the other hand, if you would just bank your minerals instead, the zerglings would most probably have improved your current situation. Absorbing only a single tank-volley could seriously improve the outcome of the fight for you. If you're planning on remaxing instantly however, it is probably better to not build those additional zerglings.
It always depends on your overarching gameplan. If you realize you always have like 2k minerals in the bank, and you barely ever use them in those games later on, maybe just try to spam zerglings for a couple games. Should give you a feeling if it's worth it or not.
Yeah, maybe I'm overdroning, I'm not sure, but having too much economy shouldn't be a bad thing. Zerg is sooo gas heavy, it's insane, maybe I'll just mass queens, seems to work okay.
I think you can only be overdroning when either a) you get steamrolled because you didn't have enough units already or b) you are maxed but your army seems somewhat small.
It's not bad to have more workers, you just need to have ways to spend the stuff you're harvesting.
Next question:
Is there a way to report certain posts that are either completely retarded or straight against the rules? I miss some kind of "report" button next to a thread/post or something like that. Or is there some other way that I didn't manage to find yet?
Edit: Maybe somewhat misplaced here, sorry for that. I mixed this thread up with the one where you can ask random questions.

I like to think of having too many minerals usually is a sympton of missing larva injects or not putting down an early enough macro hatchery.

Dude, the word "Hunter-Seeker" is from Dune (published 1965, so Warhammer ain't got nothing on it, being released in '87), but has since entered the popcultural conciousness and made appearances in a lot of places, including C&C Tiberian Sun. Pretty sure no one owns copyright on that one.

Anyways, as a toss, I've been playing around with a double forge build versus Terran. So far, I haven't lost to any terran that didn't pull out the all-in. Besides these ridiculous SCV all ins, what else should I be wary of?
The double forge I'm talking about is a 3gate robo expand into double forge.
Well since you are doing 3gate robo, banshees are not a problem. Can your opening hold off 3rax? If it does, I think you can roll over any form of pressure.

Sentries are so good that I could probably hold a 3rax long enough to get an immortal out.. I usually get 5-6 sentries really early, so they build up a ton of energy.
A thought on this ongoing observer lag issue: Why does the game wait for observers at all? They don't provide critical data that the game needs to move on. Just send the packets to them, and if they don't lag by all means let them chat with each other, but otherwise just keep the game rolling. There's no need to drop them either, just don't wait if they fail to sync. The "referee" observer type could still be in full sync, to allow for referees and maybe priviliged casters to catch everything that's happening in the game.

I was thinking about zerg and cheese, and was wondering why OLs can't spawn creep immediately.....wouldn't it help a zerg SOOO much to be able to move an OL to the ramp, drop some creep immediately and start up a spine crawler as soon as pool is done? It would crush things like pylons blocks and bunker blocks immediately, and just pooping some creep out below would at least temporarily keep them from building in the first place. Zerg would also be able to proxy tech much more effectively. What is the balance issue that with Zergs being able to poop creep earlier than lair?

Early on you could use it to block the other races buildings in their base (some maps the overlord would easily get there in time to do this). Stopping protoss walling off the ramp and then 6 pooling would be GG on a lot of close positions.

Better maps with longer rush distances would fix that tho, and make it a useful defensive tool, and only that.
If any mods or liquid members see this ask him this question.
Why did you leave GSL without playing a single game?
Your reasoning was NASL, but that is just starting up. You could've played in your GSL matches and still have time to make it back to the U.S.
If there was a schedule conflict, you could've just cheese your 2 matches, or forfeit then, and still gotten some money from the GSL pool. so why did you leave so early?

A good example is not getting detection quickly in lets say a PvP (since terran can kinda scan) when you don't know exactly what your opponent is doing. Other things is maybe building a bit less army units in favor of pumping out more harvesters for economy (especially as zerg, although with zerg it's a little more standard, and a bit less risky)

I'm pretty sure the OL wouldn't get there in time to help a 6 pool even on Steppes, although I could be very wrong.
I've been trying to think of ways to make infestors more useful in ZvP. I came up with this: fungal growths should do "backwards" damage vs P units, meaning, they should deplete hull damage first, down to 1 hitpoint, and then start hurting the shields.

Thoughts?
For the most part, fungal is there to stop the enemy from moving around, not really because it deals damage. I think the damage is just a bonus. I don't really think it needs improvement that badly.
There's a couple situations in which fungal is useful in ZvP already;
- You're getting harassed by phoenixes. You can hit them with a fungal and kill them off with hydras/mutas - You're facing blink stalkers. They can be stopped using fungal. - Harassment. Two fungals kill probes. While this isn't any more useful than in ZvT or ZvZ, it's still another way to use it.
Unfortunately, blizzard seems to want to leave the unused units alone, unless they feel that the matchup is unbalanced, so I don't see anything happening in the immediate future with infestors. It's not like we need to have a more useful fungal to beat protoss, right?

no lol. I doubt it.
It's cause Hunter Seeker MIssle during the beta got nerfed.
Basically back then it would be a t3 tech at fusion core and had more damage and bigger aoe.
Was way OP as everyone just teched to that as safe as possible and spammed them.
The nerf changed it completely.
What?
Anyways, as a toss, I've been playing around with a double forge build versus Terran. So far, I haven't lost to any terran that didn't pull out the all-in. Besides these ridiculous SCV all ins, what else should I be wary of?
The double forge I'm talking about is a 3gate robo expand into double forge.
I was doing this in beta many many ages ago, more or less if they dont match upgrades you'll be able to beat most any army due to yours being vastly superior(alot of terrans wont match them either..)
Otherwise it'll slow your tech down so you should be wary of any kind of all in

Thoughts?
For the most part, fungal is there to stop the enemy from moving around, not really because it deals damage. I think the damage is just a bonus. I don't really think it needs improvement that badly.

Fungal is an awesome spell that IMO deals damage amazingly for it's cost, especially when used on marines/workers. As for catching air units with it, however, it is REALLY HARD. the radius of fungal isn't overly large and unfortunately phoenix's move really damn fast. 9/10 times i can only hit two out of 4 harassing phoenixes. I feel like a better improvement on fungal wouldn't be increasing damage, radius, CD, energy or anything important to balance, but rather improve the casting "mechanic" so that its easier to see which units are being caught under the umbrella (specifically air units).
Well this isn't, imo, topic worthy at all but want to ask the question none the less. The thing is, i'm been in China since the game came out and have not been able to follow a lot of English content because it's mainly posted on youtube. HOwever as of today I have my VPN and can watch some youtube. ONe of the things I want to check out are the day9 Dailies, seening there are a bunc of them what would be some dailies people recommend? I'm looking for either entertaiming dailies or dailies that have some usefull information. I guess that's different for everyone but any recommondations are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Because he plans going back to the US before the end of the Tournament. If IdrA had played his games in the tournament and won. That would mean when he did leave, it would suddenly create a void where other players who had lost to him would feel ripped off.
Basically he did the right thing by the tournament by not playing in a tournament that he cannot commit fully to.
Why do Korean players fear their opponents watching their stream (hence don't stream as much) whereas American and European players don't seem to mind?
when I have a ghost out with full energy and I press R for sniper round, then hold shift and click on targets, it will not sniper round them. This means I have to target my ghost, press r, click target, repeat. That's a pretty painful thing to do and it's easy to fail if you're trying to do it fast. What can I do?
Are Thors worth it in PvT, and what kinda composition would you use with them Jinro or anyone else? I've been playing around with them but i cant seem to find any actual good usage other than late game tanks.

Generally Ghosts are preferred. But Thors have a 250mm ability that can stun immortals and colossus. Very useful.

I'm so confused.. I can't keep up with the site every day but I was wondering why Day9 was in Germany and I finally saw via blizzard twitter that the IEM world championship ($30,000) is there between Mar 1 and Mar 5. I then was so puzzled why this isn't on TL Calendar OR TL Tourney Tracker.. am I missing something? Why wouldn't that be up there... I rely on TL Calendar to inform me of big events I want to see with the players and casters I love....

I'm staying in Korea for 4 months and I would like to play SC2 on their servers. Of course I failed to login with my european account, but I failed to find a topic explaining which are the steps how to get a korean account. Do I need just to buy a korean copy of SC2? Do I need to buy a Korean SC2 AND to open a korean b.net account? And in this last case, what is the best tutorial explaining how to get one? Thank you.

surely its always been a flock of mutalisks, a gaggle of banelings sounds pretty good too. why would larvae be a bryce? is it something to do with machine?
I dont think this deserves it own thread in general but I have posted a thread on battle.net official forums suggesting a layout editor for the games UI.
After the small tools patch yesterday, I found out that apparently there is a new Metalopolis version, since I had to dl it. I noticed it is 1.2 now. Did they add the same changes as in the GSL or such or is it just that I have to re-dl maps after every update/patch?
What was the point of making it so 2 pylons couldnt wall off a ramp when 3 can? fucking retarded blizz.
Uh, because a 2 pylon wall is cheaper than a 3 pylon wall?

cool idea in my opinion and on top of having a good idea you also brought to my attention that for some reason the blizzard forums say that i do not have a starcraft 2 "character" that i must create in game when i know that i do does anyone know what this problem has arisen from the forums on blizz wont let me post because of this and it is kind of annoying
Hi, im new to the Starcraft universe and recently a friend pointed me in the direction of these forums, im looking for a EU Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty trial if anyone would be so kind as to send me one i would appriciate it. Thanks
A thought that came to my mind when I read about the new laddermaps:
What if there were different mappools, depending on what league you are in?
If you just altered the mappool by 1 to 3 maps each step, you would still have enough maps in common for seeing matches between leagues, but it would most probably make more people happy. For example, diamond and up can have a mappool designed for the top level play, whereas the bronze league mappool could have maps that e.g. encourage players to try and learn to do anything but 6pool, because from what I've read and heard there is a LOT of cheese happening in bronze leagues. How about the Maps with the extra destructible rocks? That wouldn't be bad maybe. Or it could just be maps that are more suitable for the casual player, but tend to have imbalances when really good players are playing on it. In one of the threads concerning the new maps someone pointed out that maybe shakuras was removed because many people (on bnet forums, I suppose) complained about it. But I've hardly ever heard any very good player complain about shakuras.

yeah i quite like that but i think the beginner versions of the maps with being completely walled off from the other guy would be a little much, but something else which is a bad cheese proof would be quite nice, getting GSL maps at the top end would be bloody lovely too
Hey anybody maybe have dropping from SC2 about 10min in game and no matter what im doing or playing or watching replay still I have drop from game. And after it I dont have any error nothing just dropped in explorer and game is off.. ?
hey what do you guys think of the new 1v1 ladder maps? The ones that i just got were Slag Pits, The shattered temple, backwater gulch and typhoon peaks. so they took out lost temple, steppes of war, jungle basin and i dont remember the last one.
I have a question about promotion and bonus pools. I'm on the cusp of promoting to Diamond (I'm winning most matches against Diamond players) but despite a bunch of wins lately I still haven't been able to promote. I thought this may be due to my bonus pool being rather high.
Right now I've got about 415 points left in my pool (though that's down from 600 points last night, I've been a busy bee). Will the system not move me until my bonus pool is below a certain level? I know that Blizzard mentioned only wanting to move "active" players into the Grand Masters league, does that limitation apply to all league movement?
As far as i know, the system won't choose to not promote you, just because of this bonuspool. I've had a second account myself and got promoted with a pool like 2k. But right now it seems nobody really knows, whats going on inside blizzards ladder system.

I like them, most of them offers huge spaces in the middle where you can have a more fair fight like in the old brood war days. I reckon "balls" won't be as hard to stop anymore.

Just found out there is iphone/ipad support for GSL ticket, any idea on what they are? The iphone apps are only for season 1-3 and gomtv.net does not play video on iphone, so...
I noticed this a while ago but only started discussing with friends so thought I would bring it up, when did buildings start getting prioritised when doing an attack-move?
I'm quite certain you have previously been able to attack-move when in someone’s base and have your units move and engage an army normally. However, within the last few weeks, I've noticed that units will now shoot the nearest building even if there is a unit like 1 hex out of range. This makes fighing a battle in somones base kinda hard because half your army engages while half decide it'd be better to shoot at a supply depot while everything else is getting killed...
When did this change come about? was it intentional or maybe some error when the SCV repairing priority thing was introduced?
I have what feels like dull aching bands running down the inside of my forearm to my wrists. Pangs of pain occasionally occur in my wrists as well. It def. seems like it is related to me playing a bit more SC2. What kind I do about this? Stop playing for a bit? Elevate my wrists? Really dunno what to do.

No. I came back to the game after a long absence and got promoted to Platinum within a few days with a 3k~ bonus pool. After a couple weeks I got promoted to Diamond with about 2k~ bonus pool. The system just wants to be 100% confident you won't get to Diamond and be outclassed. Just stick with it.
just joined. i just got off a 2 month break of sc2. it was a bad choice but im a little rusty right now im competitive against silver 1v1 and gold teams. please feel free to ask to team up...
Calling all Chicagoland Sc2 Players. I am seeing who is interested in attending a tournament. Upon gathering the information, I can host a tournament, find accommodation, and gather sponsors. I just need interest and from there I can move forward with this plan. Thank you guys, feel free to PM me.
As far as I know a season is the time between ladder resets. So when the season ends, is when the ladder gets reset.
I didn't know if this would qualify for its own thread so I'll just post it here: As most of you probably know a scv set to auto repair will repair anything, even when attack moving. I thought about what effects it would have, if the scv's would also prioritise repairing over gathering resources. So for example you scv's would automatically start repairng a turret close to the mineral line if it gets attacked by mutas, and then go back to mining. this would greatly increase the time it takes for the mutas to kill the turret, compared to manually sending the scv's to repair.
So what are your thoughts on this? would it be a good thing to implement in the game?
Can anyone tell me in some of the games I've seen, how come terran have 1 rax with a tech lab/reactor while the other 2 rax (whether it be 2-3-4-5-6-11111111 rax) they don't have anything?
Yeah ive heard about the new units for Heart of the Swarm......can u believe it.......theyre letting toss have multiple motherships!!!!!!!!!(but...they nerfed it a ton)
