Just finished building this Lego siege tank. It's fully remote controlled (driving and siege/un-siege). I added a bit of audio from the game to make is sound a bit more authentic.
Edit: I've started a parts list. Only the power functions parts are on there so far. I'll add more as I have time. It'll be a looooong list.
Here's a short video of the tank's guts. It shows the two drive motors and the mechanism for moving the tracks out for siege mode.
I've been wanting to make a remote controlled Colossus but I don't know how, so I'll just have to wait until some fan with engineering skills makes one and stare in awe.
The first electrical engineering class at my university is literally playing with those MindStorms kits to build robots. It's not as difficult as one might think.
Is this based on the Lego NXT kits? I read the YouTube description and you mention 2 linear actuators, I don't remember anything like that from any kit, but I know custom parts can be added to the kits. But I also don't see a control brick. What are you using to control the motor and actuators?
Really great job, I'd siege my cats daily with that thing.

It's the lego power functions stuff. Much easier to use for simple mechanical actions like this.
I made a few SC:BW ships(Wraith, BC) when I was a bit younger, while playing legos with my little brother, but really nothing nearly as great as this one, and nothing remote controlled(Didn't exist yet).
It's not that realistic. Not impressive. The color scheme is off. Bad quality sound overlay on the video.
^ - Actually this was just so awesome and was receiving so much love (with good reason), I figured I'd add this to remind everyone this is still teamliquid.net where we argue for the sake of arguing, right?
That is pure brilliance! I totally agree with the guy who said you should send that to Lego and see what happens. Even if they don't do anything they'll atleast be impressed
Nice. Glad that you used SCBW sounds rather than the wimpy sounds of the SC2 tank. The sound of SC2 tanks sieging up doesn't invoke the fear that its predecessor did.
Wow this is really amazing. I need one of those asap. If you have any money to spare, build another one and send it to MiniWheat. We need a Flash in SC2!

The views update at longer intervals.
Video counts stop at about 300 until Youtube verifies that the views are legit. It can apparently take a few days till the counter starts moving again.
Wow that thing is so cool, it's probably too much to ask but if you could make some sort of guide on how to make that for us not-so-awesome-as-you-at-lego types, it would make you man of the year in my book! :D
It's a really impressive job, buddy. Congratulations. Would be great if you can share some tips with the lego fans out there, in fact I'm about to finish a Lego DT myself and I think I could use some advice.

Am I the only person when I saw this think of SC games played by legos rather than on the pc? Amazing props man truly thinking on a different spectrum than any of us.

holllly shit balls, that is soooooooooooooo amazing. Good work man, I remember when I was like 10 years old I got a remote control ATAT Walker and once I got it running it was amazing.
piece of shit seriously sound added in computer not to mention its not fitting at all :D and yeye haters are gonna hate and all that junk but i got my father's school he was awesome at creating this type of things so thats it. you COULD do BETTER :D
you should put this on ebay and link us to it to watch it, and everyone can take L bets on what it will sell for, bet you would get a decent amount for it.
I wanted to build a one like this in a school project with Lego Mindstorm But we had just 2 Motors and a lack of skill But your version is brilliant =)
This makes me rethink my opinion about lego being boring lol, I could never figure out how ppl managed to make this kind of stuff, gratz. All that's missing is the barrel firing lego pieces

Precisely, and my question is "Why isin't this in blogs?"
I mean, the OP's Lego Tank is amazing, really, it KICKS ASS! But there are places for it, as previously mentioned all you need to do is search "Lego" and it used to be the first result: search "Lego" and it's easy.
Yes this video is pretty cool, but is it REALLY worth 20 pages of "OMG I want your babies!". Sure we can show our appreciation, that's great. But that doesn't mean we should clutter the General Forums with literally 22 fucking pages of one-liners. The bottom line is guys, this is a quality site, if you want to post Youtube-worthy crap, post it on Youtube where it belongs, please
Wow this is really cool! I'm totally amazed from all kind of Lego designs, search for Lego + Starcraft 2 and you'll find everything from Carriers to Banshees
WOW, I didn't think something like this is even possible, seriously awesome job you should go contact lego and ask for job, you clearly got some talent :D

Gotta say that's pretty epic though it did look like you just played the video in reverse for it to unseige since it just backed up instead of continuing to drive forward. Either way its quite awesome.
On April 20 2011 03:27 sup3rchan wrote: Amazing! How long did the seige mode tech upgrade take you?
Ha. About 3 months.
assuming the three months it took is equivalent to the 80 game seconds it takes to research siege, each game second would be approximately one day. so a fairly average, twenty minute game would be approximately 500 days. every game you've played has been a year and a half, in the time for your units. holy hell, I've played starcraft far too long...

I didn't. The table was too small to drive forward. Would have fallen off and smashed to pieces.
I remember there was something similar that was entered in a Blizzard contest back during beta (or, at least, there was a video of one floating around somewhere). This is so awesome XD
On April 25 2011 01:22 TALegion wrote: Can i turn, too? It'd be PERFECT if it could.
Yup, it can turn. I added a "How it works" video link at the end of the video. It shows the two drive motors as well as the mechanism for moving the tracks in siege mode.
Omg so awesome. This is literally my whole thought process here.
If that are only original Lego parts they should sell that as a package. Also the Viking would be nearly impossible, methinks. Then again, "im" is just a challenging prefix.
Obviously bio is out--getting humans to look right is almost impossible if you aren't using mass amount of legos and building them the right size, and for similar reasons zealots and almost any zerg unit would likely look wierd.
Might Toss robo be possible? Colossi look tricky, but maybe an Immortal?
Among Terran...
Thor seem straightforward So do Hellions Vikings would be very tricky but very awesome.
I'm the Lego fans from China,my English is very poor(I never go aboard...), so my expression might hard to understand, sorry...
I plan to build a siege tank which can run, turn, and turn the cannon 360 degrees to aim with remote control(for someone I love). I check internet to find some reference, then I find this, really awesome work!
I have some questions about this, I will be really appreciated if you can give me some advice!
I plan to use one lego NXT controller to build this, but as I remember, one NXT controller can only contol 3 drives, I used two drives for run and turn, and plan to use one to expand the tank in sieged mode...that means...no extra drive for turning the cannon...
So...is it possible to achieve my goal by a single NXT controller? If possible, how?(Two controller would be awkward, and I plan to use one of my IOS devices to do the control...^_^)
Or is there any smart tricks to control two NXT controller on an single IOS device without switching NXT controller node? thanks again! ^_^
I know this is an old thread, but I really need some advice...and I don't know where to get them...lego.cuusoo's comment function has limited character input...and I can't use Facebook and Twitter in China....
