Hey everyone,
I'm a filmmaker in New York City, currently working on a feature documentary about Starcraft; it's history as a franchise, community, and competitive e-sport. I'm hoping to get a lot of shooting done in the next month or so (MLG Columbus, Dreamhack, etc.) so I decided to put together a teaser to show the community what I'm up to, hopefully generate a bit of interest, and give the players a better sense of what I'm trying to accomplish. You'll notice that the video is centered on the tournament circuit, which is really just one aspect of the project - I'd include the others but I simply haven't shot them yet. Over the course of the summer, I hope to interview some of the more enduring names in Starcraft, so that their accounts of the game's history can help structure the film as it weaves back and forth between the game's birth in the east and current growth in the west. On this topic, I'm very excited to fly out and film this weekend at MLG Columbus. The inclusion of some Korean players - arguably to the detriment of some non-Koreans - is at the very least an exciting storyline.
Anyway, the teaser is live, though I'll password protect it soon since I haven't licensed the track and this is really just for the community to see. Once I'm closer to a finished film, I'll release a full trailer through the proper channels.
Teaser: http://vimeo.com/jonathansutak/mylifeforaiur
Website: http://mylifeforaiurfilm.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mylifeforaiurfilm Twitter: http://twitter.com/sc2documentary
Finally, I'd like to thank members of EG, TeamLiquid, and everyone else who has allowed me to film/interview them thus far, and future thanks to everyone going forward.
Cheers, Jonathan

Wow that looks really good so far! Keep it up, hope to see it soon x)
looks really awesome, would be really excited to see the real finished documentary
Looks really awesome! I'm just worried about seeing quite a few of these Starcraft-based documentaries recently. The title is fantastic though, and you have great people in the interviews.
Looks really really good. Can't wait!
EDIT: Also, so much IdrAge.

Pretty much this, it's really hard to do Starcraft justice in a relatively small film, but this video really looks great. You also can't go wrong with interviews from people like Inc and IdrA. Looking forward to the final documentary and I hope it turns out to be as good as this preview vid
Good luck man! Can't wait :D
This is really cool, and somehow if you haven't seen National Geographic's documentary World Cyber Games, you may want to check that out; it's the best documentary I could imagine for eSports.
I am excited for this. Thanks a ton.
wow looks so professional !!!! looking forward to the full documentary!!!
It looks VERY interesting. Keep it up!
looks sick man can't want to see the full video
Thanks for the support! And I'll definitely check out that Nat Geo doc
Awesome! All you need to do now is interview day[9] and tastosis at MLG :D
Interesting, will be fun to watch when you are done.

That was really good, can't wait for the full length version :D
This looks insane man, I love the way you're putting this together. I'm behind you 100% This is AWESOME :D
I really don't like the shaky title but the content looks good and I love that you chose The Hall of Mirrors as a backing track
wow, this really looks nice... I am already excited, I think there should be more of these kind of documentaries, cause I know many people are not able to travel to MLGs and see what its like to be there and also to get a more in-depth look at what players go through etc etc...
this is really nice. Thanks for taking the time to make this, I will look forward to this
That looks fucking professional! Awesome; gl with your documentary man.
Not wise to put f**k off in the content.
I most say I'm really looking forward to this.
Keep up the good work man.

This looks completely amazing, good luck and I'm looking forward to the end product.

Seems pretty good. The typography doesn't match the quality of the rest of the teaser though.

Looks pretty awesome man. I want to watch.

I also think the editing was well done. Sure it's only a trailer, but one might consider finding a more careful balance of use of effects/transitions. It was a tad of overkill from my perspective.
A documentary shouldn't be too much reliant on these anyway. But hell, nothing serious you couldn't flesh out with time and good work so far.
Not gonna lie, the other documentary looks alot better so far.
But still, there can be nothing bad coming fro mtwo documentarys being made.
I loved the entire teaser. The only thing I didn't like was the soundtrack, honestly i was expecting some sort of action epic movie type of soundtrack
Looks fantastic. Idra made me laugh
'Fuck off' 'Yeah that was kind of silly'
Looking forward to it. The teaser looks great.
Looks great, BUT:
At the end, dont make the words 'shake' like that, it wouldve been much better if they just.. gleamed or something, the shake-effect really ruined it.
The editing is super slick, interviews great and I always have time for Idra.
Wow i'm hyped already.
Is this going to be released in cinema's or online only?

Looks sick man, can't wait for it .

Looks very professional! And that is indeed a very good thing! Good luck with the rest, and can't wait to see the finished product when it's done!

This looks totally awesome. I've always loved film-making, I hope it works out for you.

Looks excellent. Can't wait.

It's funny that two of these projects popped up around the same time - this one and the one hosted on KickStarter called StarNation. I'm excited for them both.
The teaser video looks really great!! Looking forward for the whole thing, especially since i have never been at a MLG event!
That is awesome. I can't wait to watch the finished product.
Looks really cool, can't wait to see it will definitly be a great watch. Just have the say the flashing moving, life for aiur is really epileptic, I would suggest toning that down a lot. It's way to in your face, can't even read what it says well. Best of luck with the project!
Wow, this looks really great. It definitely has great potential!
looks awesome, i hope to see it soon
Woah that teaser looks good, great footage.

The Starcraft community literally never ceases to amaze and move me.
The passion that surrounds this game is mind blowing!
Keep up the good work mate, bet of luck with it.

I'm really happy to see a rise in e-sports documentaries. This looks incredible, and I can't wait to see the result
This looks so good!
It'll be great for SC2 fans who mostly just watch streamed tournaments and have never been able to experience a LAN in person.
That looks really good! Very nice interviews and cuts, very professional camera work.
Looking forward to seeing this when it is done!
It looks really promising. Waiting for the final result!
can't wait dude looks sick

This should like be on the discovery channel

Alright, a few things.
A. Love that we've got people working on projects like this, this looks very promising.
B. A few questions and observations from someone else (slowly) working on an SC radio project.
What's the focus? I was confused. Is it the players or is it SC as an e-sport? I would recommend that you really hone that vision so you can bring some depth to the documentary; unless your goal is to provide a broad overview in which case, that's a whole 'nother approach. But the way you phrased the OP and the teaser seemed to suggest moving toward depth rather than breadth. My confusion spawned from my (mis)understanding that this was about SC as an e-sports with player interviews to support that. In which case, I didn't get that feel. The teaser felt like a mix between the two styles and so I was left unsatisfied on both accounts. Obviously this is a trailer, but a trailer should leave me hungering for more, whereas this just left me confused.
Who's your audience? If it's us, then you're looking good. If it's a general audience, then I'm slightly worried. Idra BM and player rivarly is great, learning that the players played for 10+ years and/or went to Korea to pursue their dreams is fantastic...if you're us. We care. My concern would be that a general audience isn't immediately invested like we are; who's Idra? who's Incontrol? The general populace doesn't know and doesn't care. Before you can make them care, it seems like another angle to bringing them in would help (ex. the money involved; the way their entire lives are structured around SC; something really provocative [something other than BM because, from an outsider perspective, that seems childish and hurts the idea that SC is a legitimate E-sport]. The teaser starts us out with idra and incontrol and Tyler but as a general audience member I don't know who they are, they're talking heads to me. So at the beginning I'm already unengaged. And it's certainly ONLY a trailer, but trailers establish the tone of the actual film and so if your focus is on the players first, I would suggest crafting it very carefully (if you're aiming for people who know nothing about SC).
Audience also tells you what sort of emphasis you need to put on different aspects of your documentary. If it's a general audience, you better explain how someone can practice 8-12+ hours a day, day in and day out. The average person would probably hear that and think: wtf, how can someone waste that much time on a video game?? So if your audience is general, conveying what it means to be a pro, I think would be key.
As you acquire more interviews, I'll be interested to see if you pick a variety of programers to showcase teh diversity or a few individuals with really powerful stories. Generally, that modernist approach of individual narration usually works well in captivating an audience but obviously both are viable.
Definitely looking forward to this, I think it has a lot of potential. If somehow, I can be of any assist, I would love to help. Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck.
>.< Hope some of that was helpful and not just me being a critical dick -_-
^^

A. Thanks
B. My audience is the general public but this teaser is specifically cut for the community, though I think it functions alright for both - I think the only group it's alienated so far are epileptics - sorry! Related to your criticism, I can understand how it may be difficult for someone with intimate knowledge of the scene to judge this as an effective promo; while when they see iNcontrol, iDra, Tyler, and Huk they see familiar personalities, a mainstream audience is only being introduced to the fact that pro-gamers exist and that Starcraft has a uniquely deep heritage. Hopefully I can reconcile this in the feature and please everyone
This looks very promising! I'm really excited to see the final result.
To all the people who said SC2 has the worst community. Name one other gaming community thats donated this much money for a documentary??? so amazing. Not even close to the end date either haha.
Lots of content coming out. I heard about this on SotG and I think I might have seen your teaser before (not Star Nation), either way I'm looking forward to both!
Does anyone know why all the players open the help menu when they are in a game and not the real menu with pause/surrender/etc., I saw it happen a few times in that video.
Teaser looks great, definitely makes me want to see the fnished product. I'd only change that flashy font lol, good luck!
Woops got mixed up with this and star nation. Anyway this looks pretty sick too!
wow I hope you get some MLG buzz/support this looks sick !!!
The teaser looks so nice! :D So hyped for the actual documentary--should be really nice to watch. Best of luck!
This looks really cool! I can't wait to see the finished product i hope you put it on TL.
Not a fan of the title, but the teaser was wicked and more than made me want to watch it.
Hey, was just wondering - what are you shooting with? Looks great.
This looks super cool, but in the teaser all content is basicaly from MLG. Will there be more stuff ?

Ahh, I understand now. A very well-thought out approach, I like the fact that the trailer was made for TL; I thought it was more of a general trailer. And certainly the personalities can cause problems but I'm sure you'll hammer all that out. And I know everyone here would love to help ^^ so if you're unsure of anything, undoubtedly this community will jump at the chance to give input.
Also, have you considered chatting some with the producer for Star Nation? The reason I suggest that is to perhaps avoid overlap and collaborate material. Perhaps in SN there are interviews that don't fit the focus but would work well for you, and vice-versa. Perhaps not, but it seems like an opportunity to work together to produce two phenomenal documentaries.
Best, Arn
