The past Dream Arena were held in the convention center itself, a huge theater.
And there were rumors for years about "when" dreamhack would be able to step it up and move its arena to the big ass ice hockey stadium next door. Well apparently its DH Winter 2011.
I don't think it tops ESWC2006 at Paris Bercy but that's a fucking hudge Arena nevertheless. Amasing job DreamHack, looking forward to the next event even more !! Wish i could attend
Wow! Really impressive arena, and 400.000 SEK (while not quite as much as 400.000 NOK ) is pretty damn impressive. I believe 400.000 SEK is about 60k dollars, which is almost (or slightly more?) than GSL Code S finals.
THIS IS SICK!!! Can't believe dreamhack is getting so awesome like this!?! Will definitely be full with 4k+ seats. Dreamhack summer 2011 had over 4k people in queue to get in to the dreamarena extreme which was the last arena who didnt fill more than about a 1,1k. DreamHack<3 You'll always be the best for me!
Kinnarps Arena is mainly an ice-hockey arean and I guess they will use half of it as the Dream Arena Ultimate and build up a main stage on top of a floor at the center of the ice.
Will it fill up? The problem with big venues is if they don't fill up the whole thing looks awful. IPL3 was fucking awesome, but the seats were for the most part empty and it looked really bad.

If it's the same amount of people that wanted to watch as it was at dreamhack summer it will be filled where loads of people didn't get in. (But I got in, woh)

This will sell out weeks before the event
Last Dreamhack Winter had over 12k visitors, so selling out should be no problem. It's more a matter of how many are there to watch games, and how many are there to spend time at their computers.

I'm seeing a real life Starcraft there. The field is clearly Crossfire SE, we jsut need some massive blue foam minerals and some green gas coming out of cardboard geysers

Yes it will, Dreamhack is a huge event. I actually don't know if everyone will fit there considering the huge turn-out last summer and Winter is usually the bigger event.
Awesome, might have to buy a ticket now :<, and for the people worrying that it will be empty, there is no need to. Atleast for sc2 during the last 2 dreamhacks the venue that they had it in was capable of seating 1100 people, and the lines after it was full were way too long.
On October 13 2011 00:13 robih wrote: looks nice but this will never be full
Look at you being all pessimistic and cute!
This summer there was a HUGELY long queue for the SC2 finals. The winter event also allways attracts more people. That coupled with the exposure this news will get equals a filled arena, easily.
Dreamhack production is so epic it's not even funny anymore. I was always considering DH was on the same level as MLG but....god damn....u can't even compare now it's clearly above

And ramps
The map is being visualized on the field...imagine that as a plausable future for a second.
except BW in korea, sweden always has been the esports country #1 (still unbelievable how many counter strike bonjwas sweden made). so its only logical to see sweden going first into "stadium mode" . can't wait to see that. <3 esports
Fucking amazing! The atmosphere in there when it's filled with sweaty esports fans must be god damn AMAZING! There is no other word to discribe it! Gogo Dreamhack!
Only 4k seats? I suppose thats a lot for E-sports, but they call it "one of Sweden’s largest ice hockey arenas". I would think the largest would be well over 10,000 (NHL size arenas can hold over 21,000 for reference)

I'm pretty sure it's only possible to use half the Arena since everyone has to look at one stage, for hockey the Arena is probably 10-12k people.
That is cool. After the finals between Huk and Moon the CEO of DH told us that he was going to get Kinnarps arena for DHW11, nice to see that he followed through ^^;

Kinnarps has about 6k seats and ~1k standing room for hockey matches; as you can see they are not using the full capacity of the arena for this event. Kinnarps is a mid-sized elite hockey arena, most are between 6k-8k. Globen, which is the largest hockey arena, can seat 13,8k for hockey events - not that it does so often.
Massively excited for this! I might even attend if I can find the time and money, could be rather sick.

And it most certainly is. But the stage is in the middle... Effectively halving the number seats for the event.
To be fair, the question isn't if it will be full. The question is if it will be enough for the finals.

Bigger rink, total population of 9 million Malmö's arena can seet 15k at least. Globen (Stockholm) is 13k. It's good enough

The entire arena takes around 7k. But anyone with a pair of working eyes would see they'll only use about half of the arena.

thats somewhat true. i just googled it though and it says it holds 7k people for ice hockey, but 1100 of them are standing, thus the arena has less than 6k seats. the largest arena in sweden actually holds 13850 for hockey, over double the size as this arena.
I dont want to come off as negative about this, i just was confused at how they said it was on of the largest when really its just not.

Sweden doesn't have that many arenas. I would guess it's somewhere between the 5-10 largest arena. I guess that qualifies it as one of the largest.
I don't watch hockey but... and I'm not trying to say this isn't awesome, because it is but... isn't 4,000+ seats a little low for, "...Kinnarps Arena, one of Sweden’s largest ice hockey arenas, where over 4.000 eSports fans can watch the best live esports entertainment in the world."?
I mean, your average American Handegg stadium seats a massive 60,000-80,000 people, but even your typical NBA Basketball Court seats ~15,000.
From the picture, the stage is going to cut off 1 of the 4 side of the stadium, so that makes sense that it would be at least 1/4-1/2 less seats. Hm...
I wonder what the typical attendance for Dreamhack Winter is and they just don't want empty seats.
(Again, I'm not saying 4,000+ people at an eSports event is a small number. I'm just talking about the stadium and how much of it they're going to use.)
edit: Eh, maybe I should read more than the OP next time.

Kinnarp Arena is about the 5-6th largest hockey arena in Sweden so there's nothing wrong in the press release.

Sweden Population - 2009 census 9,354,462
USA Population - 2011 estimate 312,414,000 -_-!
The arena itself can take 7000 people watching hockey. The DH Scene is in the middle of the arena, hence 4k.
They chose this hockey arena cause it's literary a stone throw away from DH.
The DreamHack Arena Extreme was sooooo fucking sweet, so comfortable, good sound, great view from everywhere etc BUT it was waaaaay too small with just a maximum of ~1000 attendants, so not everybody got a seat for the finals in the more popular games (CS 1.6, DotA, SC2). Gonna miss the DHAE for it's comfortable seats and so on, but still this shit is friggin awesome! Gonna live in Kinnarps Arena for the entire weekend! :D

yeah, i thought so. it means 1100 people have to stand, as there are only 6000 seats available.
A SC2 Tournament? In an Ice Hockey Arena? You mean DREAMHACK in an Ice Hockey Arena? Fuck everything, my schedual is now cleared, I'm going come hell or high water.
Dreamhack takes a piss on MLG. Showing that EU > US :-P Nah just kidding, but this looks awesome none the less, too bad i'm having exams in this period, otherwise I would probably travel to sweden for this.

It is pretty possible that there will be 4000 spectators. At DH Summer the DreamArena Extreme (1100+) was full and there were alot of people sitting outside that couldnt get in. And Dreamhack Winter is a bigger event than Dreamhack Summer and always has alot higher attendance than Dreamhack Summer, so it is quite possible.

Well not really, they bot fulfil different kind of criterias. OGN has insane camera angles and shots, but the quality of the IGN was so fine and sharp and they had so many different angles on the player also. So i wouldnt like to compare them, because they're both good, but the thingt that makes them stand out are not the same.

I guess we should get good at starcraft first but w/e =[
On topic this is really great and a nice improvement! There were lots of ppl who couldnt get a seat last time and hopefully this will solve this. and 400k is a fuckload of cash, like what, 50-60k USD? Not bad. A teenager/young adult could live of that amount of money for a long long time.. and comfortably to.
Dreamhack is a LAN, this isn't. How many of those 13k visitors are actually SC2 fans or came there to watch StarCraft/something else.
There were an estimated 4k people trying to get in to DreamArena Extreme this summer. Also, the winter event is much larger than the summer event. I have no doubt in my mind about this being filled during RO8 and onward for SC2. Absolutely no doubt.
And... DH is much more than a LAN. It's the world's largest digital festival. There is much more to it than video games.
Well, this is awesome but as far as i understand this it will be the same as the other dreamhacks which means there will be just one match at the arena (the final). Don't get me wrong, SC2 is not the only esports and I really don't want to get other games to be overshadowed by SC2 but _just_ the finals at an mind blowing venue doesn't make me that exited.

Thanks for the info, didn't know about the DreamArena part. By the way, i also think that if somewhere in the world this would get filled to its fullest, it would be Sweden.
This is by far the biggest venue thus far for Starcraft outside Korea and a major step for esports in general. I can only imagine the atmosphere there. When Thorzain is playing it must be like times ten or like when he is winning.
I really absolutely wish I could go there, but alas, I cannot. I will make it my mission to go next year though, would be so great to experience it first hand. If you can go, you definitely should.
as far as I understand it only the QL, Streetfighter and SC2 FINALS will take place in the arena. There is a hockey game on the friday. And dreamhack usually only holds the varius finals in the Arena Extreme.
I imagine the rest of the SC tournament will be set up in a smaller area simmilar to what was done the last summer and winter, Possibly we might see more games in the regular arena extreme....

I've been trying to find more info about this. Normally there are more games than only finals on the last day. I think they will try to squeeze in more than the finals.
In the news article on dreamhack.se this is stated:

Great, great news that Telia, AMD and Sapphire are so deeply passionate for DH and esports. O'm also very interested to see what they "have in store for 2012 and beyond".
Tomas "Greykarn" Hermansson(high up at DH and SESF) commented the Rakaka-article on this with these words:+ Show Spoiler +
"Inga 5on5-spel tyvärr pga logistik. HV71 spelar hemmamatch dagen innan och vi har bara ett fåtal timmar på oss för att sätta upp hela arenan. Nästa gång hoppas jag att vi kan köra både DotA 2 och CS 1.6 i arenan " Quick translation: "Sadly, there will be no 5on5 games due to logistics. HV71(the home hockey team in Jönköping) has a home game the night before and we only have a few hours to setup our arena. Next time I hope we can do both Dota2 and CS1.6 in the arena "
This leads me to believe that DH and its sponsors have money to continue using Kinnarps Arena at future events and that they really are going for gold.

No its still considerably less, 400,000 SEK is what is up for grabs at the whole tournament not just for first place. GSL code S is about 125,000 for each tournament with about 50k for first place.

Im guessing hes referring to what some other guy posted: There will be no 5v5 games. Which means CS, Dota, LoL would all be excluded. That should leave the arena for SC2 and maybe 1-2 more games at most?

Well those are mainly football/ handegg arenas, and there are two Swedish ones of 65 / 43k. It'd be kind of silly to have a starcraft finals in that big of an arena though.
4k will be just fine.
Edit: Hockey isn't very popular in Sweden. Even the 7k seems alot to me. Probably only fully seated when we're fighting Finland ^_^

It already says which game will be shown there in the OP.
"StarCraft II, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition and Quake Live"
Which is actually great as those are the three best games to watch from a spectators point of view (those and BW, but BW doesn't have an active competitive scene in the western world).
To be honest I think they are actually better off with not showing CS, Dota and LoL there, as those are pretty much useless to watch unless you are very much into the game yourself.

Facts are evil.
Previous DH arena held about 1000 people. At least as many people were trying to gain entrance to the fully packed finals last DH Winter. There was even more demand at last DH Summer (and the summer events are smaller).
I guestimate a minimum of 2500 will attend the SC2 finals. The real number I'd wager will be around 3000-3500. Though if these news spread well enough there might be an explosion of non-BYOC visitors to DH this winter.
Assuming of course a snow storm doesn't hit again this year.
This is so freaking unbelieveably awesome, and I'll be there! :D
There is only one thing that I need to know before I can rest peacefully (after DHW11 ofc^^), and that is IF DAY[9] IS COMING THERE TO CAST OR NOT?! Does anybody know anything about this?

I'm pretty sure he'll be there. D'apollo and him are kind of the main casters for the event. Maybe there will be some more streams + casters like Husky and TB.

Ehm, what? Hockey has more spectators than football in Sweden. Not that it matters though...

What? Surely u dont know anything about swedish hockey. More people attend hockey then football in Sweden. This arena is sold out almost every game. Same for the other top teams in Sweden.
Been at dreamhack 8times, and i can really understand them wanting to expand cause a very small amount of people around 500, have been able to watch it everytime. And summer was the worst ever when it was looooaaads of people that wanted to watch the LoL/starcraft tourny.
This arena is around 200meters from the elmia building, so it's very close but.... 4000seats? holy shit how the fuck are they suppose to fill that up.

I think the previous arena held ~1500 people, and there was hundreds if not thousands of people who didn't get in too see the sc2 finals. I wouldn't be too surprised if they filled it up.
Holy shit this is sick. Dreamhack crowds have been less than stellar in the past because of facility limitations, but no more. The ball's in your court Swedish e-sports fans. Show the sponsors this investment was worth it.

hahaha 1500....
the area you are watching holds just under 500, there are abit more area in the back that you cant see from that angel wich is about another 200seats.
Making it effektivly 700seats.
1500.... have you ever been there you wouldnt go so overboard with the numbers, And it wasnt thousands of people queueing, it was a couple of hundred.
Tho ofc a lot of people didnt queue because they knew that they wouldnt get a seat so the attendence might be a lot higher this year but i somewhat doubt they fill 4000seats with people from dreamhack only, tho ofc just having people going to event only to watch the finals in the arena, ye sure then they might fill it.

There was in fact 1100 seats at DreamArena Extreme last time.

i know, i have been there like 8fucking times and been in that area dont know how many times watching several tournaments and i understand perfekt how large that area is.
here is a video there you should be able to get some more basic understanding on how large it's
There you can clearly see the lower part wich hosted just abit under 500, and the higher part wich (does not have 600seats)

the seats in the back have just above 350avalible seats.
the lower part still has 500 so i cant understand what you get those numbers from.
And you have obviously not been there as then ofc you would know that the sides are reserved for TV cameras and VIP, not to say that 2rows that wasnt used at all, lower area row = 24seats, upper area = 34seats, wich wasnt used at all.
i'm not being hostile but it's frustrating when people provide this random numbers like 1500
lower area (middle)
have 24seats on the top, i'm not sure but i believe the arena closest to the set have like 1-2seats less but lets just make it simple
there are 18rows as far as i counted 24x18 = 432
The lower part of the theater on the sides has never been fully avalible and on either side because they are reserv for cameras and other press members. i believe there was about 60-90seats avalible, not sure if i counted correclty there because at some rows there are only 5avalible seats and some have 7 and one have only 3 so, around that amount.
so wich basicly gets you to the 500mark.
the back part left side have 7seats avalible 6rows = 42seats + 3extra in the back there you can see some crews so 45 in total if i saw correctly?
middle area upper part 34x8rows 272 and right side of wich is 8x7rows wich brings the number up to 56 on the right side.
wich makes it all (+-500)+ 272 +42+56 =870
Is't a lot of seats, well ye, is't 1100 as they state? far from, could probably reach that number of they didnt use up so much area for hosting, but ofc since you guys have obviously not been there, there is just no way you could know how many seats they have had avalible, wich is far less.

I was there by the way. Both for the Quake Live, BLC and Starcraft 2 finals.
This is actually correct. Add to that that some seats are taken by casters+production and you will have something around 1000 people there that watched StarCraft on DH Summer.
Some people seem to be a bit critical regarding how they will be able to fill it up and for me that seems kind of weird.
Last DH Summer there were 1000 people watching the SC2 final where people waited a long time to get in. At least 500 people couldn't get in and then you also had people that saw the enourmous line that thought to themselves "Oh, no chance I'm getting in to this - I better watch the stream on my computer".
DreamHack Summer had over 1000 people more than last DH Summer so DH is growing. I wouldn't be surprised if we will have 14-15K people attending DreamHack Winter.
Just by looking at these numbers there's a possibility that 3K+ people already attending DreamHack will show up to the final day at DreamArena just to watch eSport - maybe even more.
Add to that the marketing, hype, growth of eSports and you will probably find 1000 more people that want to come for this amazing event - or even stay more days for this event.
There were some that were sceptical for DH Invitational in April - it sold out in days! There were some that were sceptical about filling a bar with people watching StarCraft - it went total bonanza and 5 BarCrafts were held with about 1000 Swedes watching DH Valencia.
I do not understand why at venues there are usually 3 screens instead of just 1 bigger one? Why? is it cus they just dont have a bigger one? I think most people would like 1 huge one instead as with 3 you don't really get any benefit.
Also, it seems unfortunate for people if they have to sit at the edge. They will barely be able to see anything?
If it's an arena, is there actually space behind the wall behind those projectors? Maybe they could get a bit more space, and then the 2 screens on the side can be tilted back just a bit so that people on the very edge of the seats can still see.

I'm quite sure this will be filled, considering the line Dreamhack Summer 2011 had and Dreamhack Summer only have half of the attendees of Dreamhack Winter, and the majority standing in it didn't even get in and I guess Dreamhack knew they had to make it bigger.
A video in Swedish showing the line, and this was before the final but the line just grew and grew.

All these influxes into the eSports scene just excites me so much, and just makes all the more happier that I am part of the community. Companies are actually seeing the potential that eSports has, and in turn sponsoring awesome tournaments such as DreamHack. This is just so frickin amazing, I cannot even describe it
That looks sweet, but my only concern is making sure people on the very edge of the seating can actually see the screen. But otherwise this is an absolutely baller idea.

Three screens versus one screen. Yeah... Maybe you don't realise how big that stage will be. It's about 35-40 meters wide. What's that in american measures?

I do not understand why at venues there are usually 3 screens instead of just 1 bigger one? Why? is it cus they just dont have a bigger one? I think most people would like 1 huge one instead as with 3 you don't really get any benefit.
Also, it seems unfortunate for people if they have to sit at the edge. They will barely be able to see anything?
If it's an arena, is there actually space behind the wall behind those projectors? Maybe they could get a bit more space, and then the 2 screens on the side can be tilted back just a bit so that people on the very edge of the seats can still see.
It's the players views, perhaps? I dunno
Ohhhh that would be epic, kk that's cool then.
Three screens versus one screen. Yeah... Maybe you don't realise how big that stage will be. It's about 35-40 meters wide. What's that in american measures?
Nope, haha it's a bit hard to imagine for me (the size). I mean it the screen looks like it would be a bit small, but may be not. That would be about 130 ish feet. But don't worry we use meters too ^0^. I'm canadian anyways kekek.
So I have reserved my sector for 1 SEK (I already have LAN seat) Does it mean there will always be reserved one empty seat in that sector for me ? Or how it works ?
Looks amazing. Nice to see some Street Fighter 4 love as well. That's really the only other competitive game I have interest in watching outside of SC.
Not all seat is on the map, it is only for the 200kr tickets. People with computers at the event booked not place specific seats for 1 kr adn they are NOT on the seatmap! So don't worry it will be 4000 seats!

Can anyone give me a list of people from dreamhack? as there's a friend from spain, working at DH and claiming he saw something weird about IdrA. I won't say anything as it is pretty private , but you can ask him (He's ToxicRift on sc2, Europe, by the name of AdrianM) I hope this isn't pretty bannable , but if it is please tell me.
