Basically this is a thread for any of the (mainly undesirable) side-effects of playing this beautiful game far far too much.
I for one get many a strange look in my university library because I sit around boxing chunks of text for no apparent reason. Or spamming through my usual hotkeys in the correct order to "warm up for when I get home"
On a plus note though, I've noticed my guitar playing got a bit better due to the increased finger interdependence I got from playing a lot which was cool. My friends and I also can now speak exclusively using Starcraft analogies out when we're at bars, especially useful for pointing out hot chicks or particularly amusing looking fellows from afar without them realising. "She looks like you'll need a long-macro game to win" is a personal favourite of mine,
I'm sure some of you guys have tales that can easily trump my relatively poor anecdotes.
|
What in the literal fuck..... I've never had any of that happen to me, ever.
|
This reminds me of an old topic about how a guy thought playing brood war gave him better micro IRL, citing things like being able to close the refrigerator while simultaneously throwing an empty carton of milk in the garbage
|
Reading through this, I realized I was boxing the text in your first paragraph.
Not a good way to get metagamed, my friend.
|
Yeah I often find myself absently boxing random icons on my desktop at work when I am thinking about something... You are definitely not alone in that one..
|
I feel you
Whenever I am on a computer and am not doing anything I will constantly select my desktop icons like units and press 5 and 7 like I am spamming my control groups...
|
getting to masters league has given me an increased sense of undeserved self-importance that has seeped into my everyday life.
im also a lot more bm when i drive around bad drivers now.
sometimes I get up and shout "EZ!" when I've finished an exam

Yeah well I cannot just grind out ladder game after ladder game, I need breaks to just chill, talk to my friends and stuff or I'll tilt horrifically. Think I just started boxing my Facebook to keep up the hand speed between games or something
How high is your IRL APM though man?
|
i'd baneling bust all over her face
best bar line yes?
|
School work suffers. I wish this wasn't so but starcraft seems so much more appealing most nights

best bar line yes? That is a pretty good one man, but everybody over in Ireland is, if they are a gamer at all probably a CoD/Halo player so nobody gets the references
For a more general bar pickup/intro line I quite enjoy "Are you a poultry farmer by any chance?" "No, wtf?" "Well, you sure can raise a cock"....

People do wonder why I am constantly highlighting and making boxes when I am reading on my computer.
|
Edit: I thought you were doing these without a computer. jk you're normal.ish.
The only side effect I can think of is that I now browse windows for all the things I check (multiple news sites, 2 emails, tl forum topics) much faster because I'm using ctrl+12345 and ctrl+w actively instead of clicking with my mouse as a residual to using control groups... I'll stretch my wrist even when I'm not playing, but neither of these is as strange as boxing things..
|
I definately feel like playing the piano comes easier when you know your way around the keyboard.
When I first played starcraft 2 it really felt like playing music to me and that is what hooked me.
|
i do indeed box text all the time its a habit, my personal game is to try to box the text without boxing anything else but in a timely fashion. quite amusing during class.
|
Playing starcraft can ruin your sleep cycle.
Personally, it doesn't drain my energy very much, almost the polar opposite; the games so stimulating it tends to keep me awake and alert until I force myself to stop. :S
|
I do text-boxing too. But I'm not sure it's because of SC2. It helps me reading.
|
I use ctrl +1,2,3etc to browse tabs, and box EVERYTHING on my computer. All think about in my spare time is like starcraft too p.p
|
I double click+ highlight text and also box icons a lot too. D: Friends ask me why I do it, and I don't even notice I'm doing it since I'm so used to it.

Back in the summer, before school started, I noticed during a road trip that my left hand's index and middle finger would involuntarily twitch. I guess that was the effect of going from playing 20 games a day to none.
|
Not a bad side-effect, but at work I tend to optimise and use keyboard shortcuts for everything.
I mean, I did that already, but Starcraft pops into my head and I move into a higher gear, getting the mouse into position while I control c so I can click and control v, and so on, keeping a mental note on my tab order so I can alt-tab the correct amount of times to get to the window I want to be in, smashing out paragraphs at 70+wpm.
Then wasting all the spare time on TL
|
I sometimes have neck pains because I slouch too much. I also noticed that sometimes I get tremors in my right index finger when I'm smoking. I don't know if thats from using my mouse too much or not, but I think it is.
I also say "gg" sometimes in real life...but never in game.
|
Oh god all of this is true -.-
I use BM and Manner up in every day talk WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much. I say GG and nore all the time.
In my classes I sit at the keyboard and spam all the keys for an actual game type situation and ALWAYS Box stuff with my mouse.
My typing speed is seeming to go up though... upwards of 120 WPM now and a year ago I was around 90.
|
I just learned in this thread I can change tabs with ctrl+numbr. If you need me, I'll be APM spamming firefox.
|
I find myself thinking about SC2 far too often in class and it has affected how much I care about school T.T
|

tbh, not sure if good or bad
|
I make boxes, spam hotskeys, and say ez during tests. One time during a calc test I Coughed "EZ". But the sub thought I said E and called me out. O.o
|
Am i the only one who gets pussy from being a diamond league starcraft player?
|
I don't get anything done IRL. Probably the worst side effect of 'em all.
|
Hmm, I don't understand why playing starcraft would make you box text...
As for myself, although I almost never BM, after I get finished with a long and strenuous bit of work I always write 'eZ' at the bottom in small letters to give me that sense of having conquered it.
Besides that, nothing I can think of.

I love saying "Manner up" IRL. I also specifically do the "sup son" shrug as often as possible. Not to mention that every plan I have are referred to as "builds" and anything annoying at work is OP.
Yeah... I fucking love this game.

Bad grades and no girlfriend

My roommate works in a research office helping out some bro. He finishes the work in half the time because of how quick he has gotten with his mouse and keyboard.

I bit my tongue really hard because I was trying to multitask while eating =(

I tap my desk during class. Get tremendously bored, and usually end up browsing TL on my phone.

I used to have SC1 dreams occasionally. Then I got really really into smash bros melee and I'd literally be seeing fox pull of a perfect shffl dair waveshine jc-grab uthrow air air bair even with my eyes wide open when I was wide awake. When I was a kid I'd hear the clanging of armor from Warcraft II in my ears at random. SC2 hasn't been quite as bad somehow but I occasionally can't get blink micro out of my head.
|
I feel obligated to watch major tournaments. A strong obligation is the closest thing to addiction I get from SC. If I REALLY need to not watch it, I can, but I feel like I missed out.
|
I'm just glad I'm not the only one who pretends to play SC2 while not playing SC2.
|
Lol
Now reading this I realize that a tend to box everything in my desktop, when Im doing nothing.
SUPER LOL.
A side effect of SC, haha.
|
My APM in Solitaire has gone up tremendously, especially if I'm listening to trance or kpop.
Also, my mouse hand sometimes pretends to click an invisible mouse sometimes when I'm bored. My keyboard hand often accompanies that by motioning the (Z)Build (E)Depot or (A)Barracks hotkeys (I use grid).

I think that's why it can ruin your sleep cycle...
I do highlight/box text when reading, use Ctrl+W to close windows, Ctrl+T to open new tab, Ctrl+(Shift)+Tab to move through tabs, and a lot of other hotkeys similar to SC2 actions, but I did all those things before playing SC2.
I tend to make a box (about the size you'd need to select workers at mineral line) and then right click and hit refresh on my desktop. I do it to warm-up or sort of test out my mouse precision.
Also, I have shoulder and wrist tendonitis from playing too much SC2.
|
I box desktop icons at school out of boredom, also text boxing.
|
I feel like when something falls out of the fridge i can catch it in mid-air now easily. intense micro right there.
|
I highlight text on a consistent basis. Also I have something I call "Starcraft Hands". Basically, while playing Starcraft 2 my right hand fingers are straight as they are positioned on my mouse whilst my left hand fingers are positioned in such a fashion that they are curved over the home keys while playing. This has resulted in my left hand having significantly more curved fingers when I lay both my hands on a flat surface and let them relax, a la Starcraft Hands. Just wondering, is Starcraft Hands a common thing?
|
My lab partner at Uni hates me. That's about the only side effect it has for me.
|
|
My drafting teacher yells at me for cycling through my hotkeys in class, and GSL rapes my sleep schedule.
|
I tend to box things when I'm thinking of something to do on my desktop.
Playing BW occasionally apparently puts a lot of stress on my wrists.
|
That's actually kinda wierd dude, it wouldn't help you.
|
Saying GG and GLHF IRL. Plus an unnatural fondness of Korean things. (Food, music, and progamers obv)
Also, getting breaking news from TL.

To be fair to him, it certainly COULD help your multitasking.
But not in the sense that you could close a fridge while throwing out milk, more in the sense that you could carry out multiple tasks at once that you can start, and get back to later. A common analogy that I use is working in a busy kitchen (and not like, fries and burgers, but REAL cooking), where you need to have more than 10 things all going at the same time, and time everything properly so that you don't burn or ruin the food.
So no, it won't help me close the oven door while I flip a steak, but it COULD help me keep track of the chicken I have in the oven, remember not to over-reduce the sauce on the back-burner, flip the steak on the grill at the correct time, pull down the plates I'll need to place all the food on, taste the sauce and season it properly, check the chicken before it burns, throw another steak on the grill and chicken in the oven because a new order just came in, pull the first steak off the grill at medium-rare, all while keeping the vegetables moving in the sautee pan so that they don't burn, yelling at the dumb fucks making appetizers because they just forgot an order of chicken wings and communicating with the rest of the line to make sure all the food hits the window at the same time.
Much the same way I need to stay on top of the upgrades I have running, remember not to get supply blocked, constantly make probes/scvs/drones, scout, move my army into proper position, expand, tech up, spend my money, watch the minimap so I can keep my army properly positioned, all while finding ways to pressure my opponent and win the game.

I play zerg and now I'm depressed. I also tend to rage a lot but try to refrain myself from saying the f word a billion times. When I lose to cheese or some stupid blargh, I look at the replay and sometimes I want to shoot myself. Overall, life hasn't been to great playing SC2, but I still play for an hour a day.
|
Only side effect: Becoming a sexier beast.
But seriously, I also tend to box-highlight walls of my text. Also, I tend to StarCraft-ize any acronyms and letters and things I see everywhere. I also consider any fast-paced things I do "micro", and occasionally figure out my "build order" for the day.
|

I can't sit at my desktop without boxing shit. My friends and I often say phrases such as "here we go tasteless~~" in an artosis voice before drinking large amounts of alcohol or at other (in)appropriate times. Also when someone is going to pass out soon usually someone drops a "were gonna be seeing a GG any minute here" or some rendition thereof. When pointing out something interesting the word used is often micro. See a woman strutting her stuff, "thats some good hip micro."
and so on.

I think tons of people do the whole boxing/highlighting text thing. I've done it for ages, probably before I ever started playing Starcraft. It's just something to do with your hands while you read, like skimming your finger or a pencil over text.

Yea, while i'm reading along something, i've always selected the line that i'm reading on, helps me keep where i was if i happen to look away, flip to something else, or something steals my attention for a second.

I was trying to pet my cat but he kept just getting outta range and running back in. I thought he had good micro
|
when i played plants versus zombies for the second time (pvz lol) the way i played completely changed, because i tried to macro as hard as i could. I am a zerg player who 15 hatches every game haha
this meant that instead of getting early defense while i built up some sunflowers, i built as many as sunflowers and double flowers as F'ing possible while building the cheap 1 hit ko plants (spud mine) to take out he early zombies. i walked the razor's edge haha. but by the midgame of each level i had so much sun power that i put threepeater shooters on every row and every level was so EZ PZ i got bored and stopped playing.
i thought it was funny because it's pretty much the PVZ version of the ice fisher build (40 drones no gas), except even easier because you're playing against a predictable opponent (zombies) and all you have to do is defend.

I started highlighting text back when every website insisted on having a bright white background which drove me crazy, so highlighting it turned the background a darker color.
Lately, I've been spamming the right/left click buttons and tabbing like a mad-men whenever I stop to think about something.

I drive like I play starcraft. My eyes always look up at the rearview mirror and then down to the driver-side mirror and then back to the road (as if looking at minerals/gas/food and mini map). I also scan the road more actively. I feel my road awareness is much higher.
I also micro my music and AC like a boss.

well my sleep cycle has been fucked up since i started playing WoW, so i can't blame starcraft for that. i have noticed a correlary drop in grades when compared to the amount of starcraft i ingest.

i feel playing games can do this for a lot of people when you get super into them. Back when i played tons of counter-strike i felt mainly it built up my awareness of peripheral vision. Another one was when i played i felt like i was able to pick up more feint audio type hints to. I cant remember exactly but during that time i was playing cs a lot something else like wow came out that made me drop it almost entirely. As a result i felt like i lost the ability of the obvious fast reaction times ability to effectively aim well but also the strange feeling that my peripheral vision was a thousand times worse then how i remember it.
Currently i play sc2 really casual but i think for the people who are able to play it back to back and a lot of it do get obvious mental benefits from it as well as dexterity in the constant hand practice. One the games i play the most at the moment is SSF4:AE and i currently see benefits from that as well mainly for me in the area of reaction times and maybe a little of critical thinking to hand movement that is important in the milliseconds (watching frames for animation Ques to know what your opponent will do).
I think we have all seen the type of articles that talk about how everyday people who have nothing to do with video games use them as mental and pre-warm up tools for activities. The only ones i cant think of are the ones about surgeons playing games before a important delicate surgery and F1 race car drivers running through tracks in the game to ease themselves into the speed and natural flow of race track layouts.

Hmmmm... I only use any game related terminology when speaking to my gamer friends, and even then I don't use is too often. I have some friends who use it even with girls though (usually ends up pretty terrible), or call other people by their gaming nickname.
Personally, I'd say my only side effect is watching too many streams and spending too much time in this forum. I think it's affecting my academic performance so I should limit it accordingly, I just don't LOL.

Sort of related I work in air cargo and turns out that job made me much better at multi-tasking so not sucking horribly at SC2 like I did in previous RTS's has been a most welcome surprise.

sc2 taught me how to control my emotions and make good decisions.
I remember the good old days of bronze when i first started playing last year. I would happily plod along building my workers and pylons/depots/lords. Then I would get reapered/bansheed/helipwnd/voidraped/cannoned/10pooled/dropped and I would get so angry and start breaking shit.
I punched a hole through my wall, destroyed both my keyboard and headset. And I would get noise complaints from neighbours over my screams of pain.
Incidentally I never really dealt with my emotions IRL well either. Failing at any menial task would make me rage and I couldn't deal with relationship trouble at all. Every time I broke up with my latest gf, it would send me into a reeling depression.
But gradually SC2 taught me to rein in my emotions. I didn't even have to try. It was just a matter of positive and negative reinforcement. Everytime I lost control of my emotions I would do stupid shit (eg base racing a terran) and die and feel horrible. But on those few occasions I controlled my temper I would make a better decision and with my better macro I would come out on top and win and feel great.
Nowadays when I play and fuck up or something wrong happens I just sort of disengage my emotions and let my hands and logic take over. I just ask myself, "What is the optimal logical decision right now?"
Funnily enough I have inadvertently applied that strat to real life now too. When shit goes bad, I just keep making good decision or at least OKAY decisions and just keep aiming to accumulate those marginal advantages.
Because Life is just like sc2. If you are too greedy (eg double fast expand in sc2, eg high risk investment irl) you take a huge risk and can lose it all, If you rush every game then you may lose a ton. But if you keep going for those marginal advantages; that extra chrono done on probes, that tiny bit of harassment you did on your enemy, that slightly earlier expansion you took, that losing battle that you never fought but delayed until your high templars had enough energy for storm... Then you end up winning
In life you make the tiny decision not to go to maccas but to cook yourself and it makes such a tiny marginal difference, but if you make that same decision every single night then you end up not having a heart attack in 10 years time. You put in that extra hour at work every day and in a years time you find that you actually do have just enough money to pay the downpayment for the house you want to buy.
The list goes on.
But I guess the point I'm trying to make is that sc2 is not a bad game. There are plenty of terrible games out there that genuinely do waste your time, but after playing a year of sc2 I find myself in a way better situation than I was before I started playing and I feel I am the master, commander and executor of my own life again.
|
i've explained monopoly deal in sc2 terran terms
i also say glhf and gg way too much.
|
It's a fairly obvious one, but I've found I'm becoming significantly faster and more dexterous with computers in general. I'm much more confident hitting keys at full extension or in odd places (eg. F-row) without having to stop and look. I've also become much faster at striking keys with my mouse hand hand and switching back blindly... which is actually odd because I never need to do that while playing SC2.
It's a really straightforward and expected outcome, but it's still kind of nice. Starcraft has made me a better and more time-efficient programmer in a few small ways.
|
My mouse accuracy has gotten better since playing SC. I guess I also try to build order my life...
That's about it.

Main side effect of Starcraft for me is that i often read TL on work or watch VODs at home and actually nobody realizes what i do and maybe they think that I'm mad man ;D

having a gf it is just like having a flock of mutas swarming around ur base not letting u expand or move out

Well other than the game-related dreams, my guitar playing has actually improved significantly. I'm not sure if this is because of the increase in APM and whatnot but I wouldn't be surprised.
The negative side-effect is procrastination through reading these forums and watching vods. xD

I'm not sure if I have warned about RSI man, very dangerous and life threatening if not dealt with properly. Prevention is best cure.

I also box text, but I can't recall exactly when I started, so I don't know if it's SC related or not. But I can't think of any others right off the top of my head, besides general speed and accuracy improvements (but not drastic, so.....)

I'm assuming this is a troll post... RSI is not life threatening.
Also posting "prevention is the best cure" on TL is a little like going to a base-jumping convention and telling people that heights are dangerous and should be avoided. It's certainly something very important that people need to respect and take into account... but it's not cause to stop playing.

I just mutter "leave it to me!" at work when people ask me to do something. Obviously this skill was acquired watching Starcraft, not playing it. For that matter, I also employ Artanis' "Consider it done!" and Duran's, "You got it." And Sporrer's "Excellent!"

|
I do the usual boxing of text/icons and running through my 1a2a3a4a5a absentmindedly. I've also found that playing Starcraft, BW more than Sc2, has helped my guitar playing and whats great is that playing guitar has helped my starcrafting.
Bad side effects include sleep problems though. I find if I play after 8 30 at night I can't get my mind to quiet down again til 1 or 2 am.
|
When im watching hockey and my team scores i say "ez".
i also do the boxing of icons etc. sometimes when im in a conversation with someone on MSN and they are taking a long time to reply i will say "123123123123123123123123123123123123123"

Haha ^_^ I also box icons on my desktop, or text if I have an internet page open. I spam '5SD5SD5SD5SD5SD5SD' while I wait for my computer to start up and I quite frequently dream about Starcraft - sometimes Day[9] is present, and oftentimes I dream that I am some event with all my favourite pro-gamers. I make Starcraft jokes quite often in class, that almost no-one understands, and I am currently working on a short SC comic strip series for my friend
EDIT: I sometimes say things like 'whadda you want?' as the Vultures do from Brood War, and I sometimes find myself humming starcraft music
|
Whenever i'm at a mac store and there's computers on display (that are powered on) I'll go to the keyboards and randomly spam "11331144113311441133114411331144113311441133114411331144113311441133114411331144"
Which is what I spam with my hotkeys in the early game. I also troll people by opening textedit/notepad and typing out some random message in obscenely large letters, then leave the store.

srsly, an understanding of the principles of RTS through sc2 has changed the way I approach most games.

I box text and icons since forever, long before SC1. I don't think its SC related.

ive actually noticed a decrease in my social abilities. I find that having conversation with non-starcraft players becomes harder due to the fact that I spend less time around people.
|
whenever I'm stuck in programming or some other class in a lab I'll always spam 1e2e3e4e and then box rapidly whatevers in the middle of the screen a picture or icon or something while I think. It just allows my hands and the rest of everything my body could do while I just focus and zone in on something. I couldn't tell you how many games that I've ever actualy needed to make probes off of 4 base's at the same time but when I do I'll be prepared It really impress's anyone near me while I then clutch out some random ass fix.
I always try something really hard in the casual games and wii games thats obserdly difficult and only gives me a slight edge over everyone else but I'd like to say I'd die for that inch.
|
I've become less of a nice person IRL because of SC2. In some ways SC2 has taught how to become a good asshole. Quite a necessity in life if you ask me.
|
i've been in trouble in meetings for clickspamming.
I believe it generally makes me more aware of keyboard shortcuts, and i look out for them in office applications and windows.
|
Boxing everything on computer So many comparison on everyday's topic with my brother (like when we play badminton, if one of us run to get the shuttlecock but misses it, it's like an overstim. Whenever we play against 2 unknown players, they're silver if they suck or master if they're good, stuff like that) Also, saying GG quite a lot.
It must be quite funny to speak starcraft in a bar, no one would understand you except the person you're talking to :D
EDIT : And, most important, multitasking ! And anticipation (while driving)

That's the way i play to but it was before i got interested in SC2 Guess that's why i like macro games

One thing i noticed appears when i'm in front of windows desktop. I draw squares with the mouse and move icons as if i were warming up to use windows. I think it's silly.

Yes, clearly boxing screens is killing ESPORTS.
It really isn't that big of a deal. People are relating their hobby to their lives. I find that playing hockey for a long time gave me a better awareness of my surroundings and that writing a short story made me narrate events in my head, it didn't really affect anything.
|
One time, I played BW for 24 hours straight (I made $50 off of it). For about the next week, I was unable stop thinking about random shit like some scourge vs corsair micro, the positioning I should take to try a lurker contain, etc.

Heh, it's amusing to see so many good anecdotes about positive Starcraft II side effects.
Mine however, aren't really that great. SC2 is stressful... really stressful.
If you're doing 200apm for 5-6 hours, you walk away with adrenaline pumping... so you're wired and exhausted at the same time. I was only top 15 masters, so my APM wasn't a constant 200, but sure feels like it sometimes! The stress caused by SC2 contributed in part to many negative side effects such as indigestion problems, anxiety issues and feeling burnt out.
Playing SC2 until 2-3am makes for a very poor night's sleep... You'll fall asleep thinking of strats, you'll see marines and banelings in your dreams. It sounds cool on the board, but it's not really cool when you're trying to have a regular, normal life.
It's easy to forget how much time we spend in front of our screens, so my social life was also affected... as was my income and overall happiness. I don't know about you, but if I was in a slump, I would feel pretty frustrated that day.
Now?
Well I stopped playing for a while, and it's only by stepping away that I have been able to see the drastic difference between the two persons that I can be.
First, with the reduced stress, my health has improved. (Obviously, this wasn't exclusively related to Starcraft, but as I mentioned, it didn't help).
I've also increased my income by quite a bit since I stopped. Instead of spending hours and hours playing, now I'm concentrating on revenue and that's paying off.
Going to sleep at a semi-reasonable time is easier now... Gone are the days where I stay up until 3-4am because "I just want to win one more before I go to sleep" or worse... "I want to want to see how far my hot streak can go!"
The first few weeks were the hardest, and I'm still actively hanging out with my teammates, watching all the matches, keeping up with the scene. Now it's a little easier to just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
As an added bonus, my life has become more interesting... let me explain why:
When you play SC2, you get your adrenaline pumping. It's FUN, it's exciting... you feel such a good rush. When you STOP playing, you feel bland. Real life doesn't seem as fun and you begin to wonder: "What can I do to replace this adrenaline rush?!"
So you'll turn to sports, you'll turn to activities, you'll turn to partying and you'll turn to going out to do new things. It makes you horny for life, and that's a good thing.
p.s. Still an avid SC2 fan
tl;dr Played lots of SC2, was really stressful.. bunch of health issues, financial issues and life issues. Stopped playing, was tough but found a new life.

I don't know if boxing icons and text is related to starcraft. I seem to remember myself doing that long before I played the game.

Some negative impacts from SC2: Didnt eat Didnt go to class Then didnt go to midterms.. Then didnt go to exams Then failed every class.
What do I have to show for myself -.-? A very high masters rank T_T...... Although since season 1, I stopped playing and sort of slowly getting back into it, now that my marks are really well in shape *shrugs* Oh god...I'm addicted to SC so hard >_<

When I'm fapping I think of mutalisks and queens.

I think playing SC made me dyslexic a bit. I read words in a text that don't exist because I smash 2 different letters in different lines together... also, I write and and or the the a lot when I'm trying to write an essay or something like that.

I do timings with my toast... Other things: i say gg and glhf too much, also i say "pops" for anything that gets done... :D

My breakfast has become an exact science.
First I start off by boiling 1/4 of a pot (?) with water while I boil up the rest of the required amount in a water boiler thingie. While I got those two going I make my coffee and when I've poured the wanted amount of coffee in the machine the water in the boiler is almost done and the 1/4 water is already heated up so at this point I walk the 8 meter walk to my computer, set up a timer for 6min 30 seconds, 15 seconds added in there for me walking back to the kitchen and an additional 15 for me to get the eggs and a spoon to lower them in the water.
The water boiler usually flips the switch back, the sign that the water is done boiling, when I enter the room. I pour the water in, get them eggs in there. Start to do my sandwiches with butter n caviar and when those are done, the coffee is done and I pour it up. I walk back to my computer with my coffee and my sandwiches and I sit and read half a news article from nytimes.com and at this time there's usually somewhere around 1min 15 seconds left on the 6:30 min timer. 15 seconds for me to go back into the kitchen and now, with one minute left I take the pot off the stove and let the eggs be in the hot water but not the additional heat for one minute.
I go back to computer and take a bite of the sandwich and a sip of the coffee and return to the kitchen. Pour out the hot water and fill it with cold water and let them cool down for minute before I retrive them and everythings ready. The egg white is perfectly firm where as the yellow (I don't how to spell the joke/jook/derp word in english) pretty loose, just the way I want them.
I blame day[9] for making me think of timings like this -_-
Edit: also worth mentioning that the collective that I live in say glhf before you leave for work and gg before going to bed.
|
Thought I'd add this to the thread:
Was out with a girl last night. When we finished getting at it, I rolled over, lit my cigarette, and said GG.
|
A lot of times when I'm bored during a lecture I will play a little game where I come up with a command from starcraft such as "build zerglings" then I mime pressing 4,s, and zzzzzzzz with my left hand on the desk as fast as I can or I say "inject larvea" and I will mime pressing 55-v-click, 66-v-click, 77-v-click and so on. Then I will say, "send mutas to harras" and i will pretend I am double clicking 2 and pressing a. Lol, you will be suprised how well your fingers estimate the locations of the keys without having a keyboard, and execute the command quickly.
|
Only thing is that my previously mindless boxing of icons now is a determined exercise of marking just the text or just this group of icons, and that when I'm reading, I suddenly catch myself spamming my macro button. Yes, I play zerg...
|
I've had only two real side effects:
1.) Going through 4-S-D at the dinner table a few times
2.) Having dreams about SC with specific builds that last as long as full games (or seem like it)
|
When I hear certain words, the association with starcraft terms is so strong that I actually have to pause and translate them back into their normal definitions.

I guess I never thought it was from Starcraft or gaming in general, but when I'm on the computer I do tend to keep my hands busy at all times. It really confuses/frustrates people when they try to watch me doing something or read something on the screen.

I also find that I try to multitask as much as possible IRL! When eating lunch at work I place an empty cup in the water cooler and then start washing my hands while I stand on one leg and use my foot to fill my cup of water.

I do the boxing thing a lot, not exclusively with text though, sometimes I'll just sit boxing empty space on the desktop, or anywhere for that matter.

I work with a Korean guy, and I've established that he is familiar with The Emperor and played SC in college in Korea. Something I've always thought was just a nervous tick of his, boxing text while reading it, now makes a lot of sense. Now I'm just kind of shocked at how slowly he boxes it, must be a toss.

I don't think the boxing text thing comes specifically from Starcraft, I did it long before I even knew the game existed.

I was out for a drink with a fellow player, we're having a discussion on how cool the long-term development of RTS has been, that revolutionary ideas become the norm etc. Mention that it must be cool to be someone like Maynard, who will always have a technique named after him. My companion is puzzled, 'wait, that's not an actual word? Shit I used that so many times on my degree...'
Subsequently he sent me this except from an old essay " [...] catalogues in the early epics and in Homer served the vital purpose of maynarding necessary cultural information to the audience."
I have no idea why I found this so funny, the best part is that no lecturers ever asked him what this word was rofl. Not really thread worthy on its own hence the bumpage.

I think we need to get it in the official dictionary. I am writing a Masters thesis, better get it in there somewhere!
Where else could we use it, "Hey honey can you maynard me the baby?" "Maynard me the nuts!"

Well, if we're gonna make it a real word, we've got to give it a consistent definition.
Between the definition we all know and its renowned use in academia...

Yeah, at first I'd say that it is essentailly mutually replaceable with "transfer", but we have better chance of success if we give it a slightly more unique meaning.
I'd specify the meaning to "transferring something to a location where it can be better put to use", or "transfer with the intention of improving efficiency".
So in context: "All the scissors were at the far end of the office, so I maynarded a few to my desk" "The west branch in the commercial area was struggling in the chrismas rush, so several employees were maynarded there from the industrial regions." but not "I maynarded $50 to blizzard for the latest expansions!" (as I do not expect the money to come to better use there)
It also fits in the original quote above, but with a more subtle implication that the cultural information will be useful in the audience, that you wouldn't have gotten with the word "transferred".

Yeah I like the general premise. Basically any sort of allocation of resources from one area to another, with the intention of bringing the second location up to scratch while not sacrificing the productivity of the first area.
I actually think we can do this boys, #Maynarding
Think about all the information succinctly conveyed.
1. Too much of resource at point A, inefficient. 2. Too little of a resource at point B, or expansion is desirable to point B. 3. Process of maynarding to equalise resource allocation and improve efficiency for a long-term plan.
Sure other words can work, but are they as elegant and more importantly did they come from an RTS?!
In a world where the masses are allowed their 'selfies' and where literally literally means figuratively, DO WE NOT DESERVE OUR PLACE IN THE LEXICON, to be immortalised in language?

This made my day LOL.
So by the way, I'm still trying to understand the usage of "Maynard" and it's a little odd to me still, is there any real definition of it? I know that it's not a legit word though, just that I wanted to know what it actually means when someone is actually using them for their conversations.

What it will say in the dictionary in 5 years: "transfer; appropriately redistribute; reallocate resources in a more efficient manner"

"A long macro game to win" haha

I used to play Starcraft on my calculator where I just put in the life of a battlecruiser and pretend a Scout was attacking it while taking into account upgrades, armor, and number of projectiles per attack.
Now it turned into Marauder vs. Zealot
|
Sometimes I catch myself thinking if "this build order is safe" about something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH STARCRAFT WHATSOEVER. AT ALL.
It's fucking weird haha.

Haha I do this also.
I pretend the rear view mirror is my mineral/gas/supply. My left side mirror is the minimap, and finally the dashboard is my control board.
Playing SC2 has really upped my driving game. I have even avoided accidents because I have hyper awareness due to SC2.

I scout more often when I'm driving in my car. Checking mirrors and stuff. Akin to constantly looking at that all important mini-map. SO IMPORTANT. Need information to make informed decisions.

I strain my eyes a lot after long hours of play. Sometimes they get really red and feel irritated for up to 24 hours. Basically until I get some sort of sleep. Smoking does not help either

This is why urban dictionary is balls at times

An actual physical side effect I've had is that my left (Keyboard) wrist is noticeably, was more so when I was masters, smaller than my mouse hand.

When I played a lot I found I was not really listening to what people were saying because I was thinking about SC2.
Also I found I would forgo doing other things in favour of playing/watching SC2. Honestly I think that is due to my lazyness/nature rather than the games fault.
After getting rank 1 master in everything I turned into a bit of an asshole and was a bit cockier then I was before, thankfully I realised how silly that was and stopped, now it is more of a healthy confidence :p.
Other then that, if I play all night for a few nights in a row I start to wake up with blood strained eyes, it goes away after about an hour so no biggie, just have to avoid looking at TLs big white background XD.

Maybe have your vision checked to see if you need glasses or up the lightning in your man-cave where you play? Or it could merely be dried out eyes, LOL I used to live with some gaming buddies (dorm) some years ago - we were playing SC2 constantly and all had red blood-shot eyes until one guy figured out it's because we never blink and thus eyes dry out. Bottled eye drops = hotfix

When I worked at a restaurant, I'd APM spam while taking orders. I'd create like triple the order, then delete the extra stuff right before ringing them out. Now I have a job writing automated testing scripts, so people mostly just assume I'm working had when I'm just thinking about SC2.

Nah Wombat, I dunno if I could even re-get master now, its been over a year since I played seriously. Been playing some 2v2 on and off for the past while, my apm is down from 300 to 100.
Id like to get active in SC2 again but no motivation, achieved all goals and got 10,000 wins/6,000 achievement points. Maybe I will try and get a 4v4 team to go 100-0 again or something and see if that re-kindles my desire to no life 1v1 ladder once more. If this happens, I will go to every LAN around the country, if im free.

I do the "box anything and everything on a screen" thing as a result of spamming, which occasionally leads to documents or code getting pasted or rearranged unintentionally T____T
