This cinematic is a follow-up to StarCraft: First Contact, an animation I did last year.
This new cinematic is a much more ambitious project, with a lot more scenes, lots of characters and most important of all, lots of story. I will be showing facets of all the three main races in the StarCraft universe, and for those of you who know your StarCraft lore and books, lots of familiar characters or events, taking place before or even after what transpires in the original StarCraft.
Update 21-sep-2011:
Almost a year later, I can proudly say this project is 99% finished. It is much larger than initially planned, and it kept evolving over the last months. Expect the final release at the beginning of October!
* lasts 7 minutes * Queen of Blades voiced by Brynna Campbell, daughter of Glynnis Talken - voice of Queen of Blades from SC1 * at 2:47 you can see reference to Husky * free to watch. As author says, he's very excited to share this with everyone!
I just watched the trailers and I can honestly say that I am blown away by the quality of this ambitious project. I am very impressed and I think the Starcraft community will love this every bit.
Personal thought for the force behind this: **You and your team are awesome for putting this together, I won't be surprised to see your name pop up frequently after this blows up. **

It was at september. Now it's ready to release tomorrow, from what I can understand from poster, that posted on sc2legacy

I'm just a forum user here I'm not a creator or socreator of this project, just posted link and trailers.

We've been around and haven't gone anywhere. ^_^
I have some interesting tidbits from the animation that you may care about:
1. Large thank you to Briana Cambell. She provides a voice in this cinematic that's slightly iconic. For those who don't know her, she's the daughter of Glynnis Talken Campbell.
2. The longest SC related cinematic at time of this post is 5 minutes, 59 seconds long. This one amounts to around 7 minutes.
3. The development of this has been the planning and discussion of key members of the StarCraft: Legacy team. The true beauty comes from Freespace Films, the business of an absolutely BRILLIANT artist who has been bleeding over this project for 1.5 years and an incredible member of our staff. It's development started BEFORE Starcraft 2 was released.
4. For those who are interested in a small interview and some interesting QA regarding the Cinematic, it was at the beginning of our HOTS Press Event Podcast as our "Shiny", involving an interview with Freespace who has created it. I suggest you jump to 17:30: Legacy Observer HOTS Event Podcast.
(Disclaimer, it's a much more casual podcast than any of the professional ones... it's also involving me acting VERY nervous as it was my first time trying to "host" something.)
Any questions regarding this can go here, I'll be happy to answer what I can! Be sure to follow us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/starcraftlegacy) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/starcraftlegacy)

I love this so much. As somebody who would like to get into 3d animation and CGI for a living, I can appreciate the tremendous technical work that must have been put into this project. Can't wait to watch it!
wow this looks AMAZING, much better even than the last project!
If this were released 1 or 2 years ago, it would look very professional (like it would fit right in with any mainstream game at the time). Even now it looks great but some things feel slightly off; I'm not experienced with this however so I'm not sure if it's really difficult to fix those other small things or what (sometimes the lighting and atmosphere feels a bit off, like need more shadow or something).
Anyway that's just me being super critical. Good job guys looking forward to it!
this does look epic, but reading on other forums, the whole movie is only 7 minutes long, which, w/e, im still grateful for all the work, but i am really greedy and hope its longer lol. either way, looks amazing, cant wait!

are you even aware how hard it is to make a video like that on your own, for free, without a budget?

Hopefully if it is good enough someone with money can pick this guy up and they can make something real (as in lasts much longer) for next project.

Cinematics like this take an insane amount of work. EVERYTHING in it was built from scratch, no models were taken or borrowed. Freespace did it all solo. I can say this, the people who have been able to see it have said it's incredibly satisfying to watch, and have watched it at least 5+ times.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. The only reason Tassadar sounds different in SC2 is that they chose to go that direction with his voice. Our choice was to find a voice actor who could replicate the voice specifically from sc1 well enough after some audio work.

You'd think that, but he's with Freespace films. He does a LOT of commercial work for large name companies out in Romania. I think he's done commercials Toyota and Samsung recently. I'm sure this might get him a little bit of a nod from passionate individuals in the industry as well.
It will be released later today. We have one MINOR hurdle we have to wait on before it's released, thus why it wasn't a midnight release. Sorry about the wait >.< Until then, my page 2 post includes some wallpapers, go ahead and check them out.

DAMNNNNNNNNNNN. Dude that was sooo good! Huge props to the creators of this incredible video. You know it's good when the only thing that could've been better was having more of it. lol
very cool stuff. it was slightly cheesy, particularly with the marine dialogue, but still very good stuff especially as a fan made project. the voice acting was extremly good.

You can tell at first glance there was a lot of dedication put into this- and it shows throughout the entire cinematic, never waning. Breathtaking. I'm already spreading the word- even to people who don't have a clue about Starcraft (the few that have replied are deeply impressed). So, good work Freespace- you've surpassed any expectation I had of this project- and they were high to begin with. Now to rewacth.
This is a sick film Only thing it could use is some more bass and better sound! The sound quality isn't as good as the animation, that is super well-done. Kerrigan's face looks weird too
Yes, she is the daughter of Glynnis, the ORIGINAL Queen of Blades. You can find out about that and more in our editorial which goes with the actual video. Go there for WIP shots, interview with the creator and more.
Mutalisks in space!! Awesome job, that looks really professional. Also it makes me miss the old Starcraft videos. The new ones are so pale compared to them.
That was super awesome. Immediately showed it to all my Starcraft buddies and they all loved it too. It was also extra awesome for me personally since I've been craving Protoss in cinematics so badly while waiting for Legacy of the Void! Thank you guys for making this badass video!~
Well, here is what I think about this animation: + Very nice quality of the animation Step in a good direction, I'd love to watch a Starcraft movie.
- There is no "story" in this movie. Just random scenes and battles. Kinda lackluster in that way. Voice acting and voice editing is pretty bad, couldn't undestand most of the dialogues/monologues (especially protoss/dark hybrid).
Keep up the good work. Waiting for a sequel with a story.

Thanks! Regarding the crits:
Random scenes are all important scenes from the lore. If you've read Dark Templar trilogy you'll be rewarded with seeing something in this. If you've played StarCraft I you'll be rewarded even more so.
Additionally, there are English subtitles for the case where people do not clearly understand the voices.
Thanks for the hard work, freespace. Please know that your dedication is truly appreciated! Hope you stick around the community and find a good organization to attach to.
The quality is simply extremely impressive! OK, to be totally honest, the rendering of humanoids (terran/protoss) does not compete with the best CG available today, but on the other hand, the rest (I'm thinking about the battlecruiser scenes) are simply excellent!
I appreciate the high amount of lore introduced (hello Kazansky!) it makes up for the absence of story in an interesting way.
All in all, I'm a bit sorry that such a huge project will only be on the frontlight for a few days, but anyway, it's great that it received spotlight!
Here is some honest feedback. First off, this looks pretty excellent, specifically the tech structures and vehicles. It definitely has the right "feel" to it.
My main criticism is during the action sequences. The "punch" or "force" behind the attacks is lacking. When the marine brushes off a zergling with his gun for instance, or during the Kerrigan v Zealot battle -- there just isn't enough "oomph" and the motions feel light as a feather. The blows, the arm motions, the overall feeling of the fights aren't bone-jarring, it's like they are weightless. That really took me out of the moment.
Definitely nice work though bud. Hope you continue to follow your passion.
I'd pay to watch a starcraft CGI movie. I really would. I wouldn't even pirate that because I'd want to watch it over and over until the disc cracks like my brood war CD did way back when.
I really like these animations, they feel very refined and polished, and the voice acting is very good. Where is the donation button... I found it!
But it's in euros! Is there a way to change that? o.o
The amount of detail in this film is amazing; I have no idea how someone could be so talented. Also, big ups for the reference to Ulrezaj; I doubt many people would get that.
hey man, i realllllyyyyyy love your work, do you think it will be possible to make some wallpapers from your nice art? Like tassadar, the dark archon, the carrier and so on... i like to see this stuff every day, so if you have time wallpapers will really be cool !!!! Thanks for your hard work!
I have one critism: In the movie, the queen of blades looked like a guy with boobs strapped on. Looked through some of your pictures, that's indeed how you built her, which gave the parts with her a slightly awkward feel (Especially with the amount she's been shown in things in WoL)
Best fan made cinematics for Starcraft, thank you for making it. If you make another one, may I suggest you add more perspective movements instead of panning, unless it takes too much time. I loved the invasion of Aiur scene, one of my most memorable moments while playing the orignal Starcraft.
Ulrezaj the Dark Archon was initially formed of four, and then three more were added later on. Indeed the inspiration came from the amazing Dark Templar saga.
Some of the scenes were drool inducing for sure! I especially liked how you portrayed both the warpdrive and the dark archon. The scene with the deathtoll on the computer screen was really powerful as well-- it did more for me than most scenes in the entire sc2 campaign tbh.

Yeah I know... wanted to repress the memory forever
the scourge goinging for the carrier was the best part imo. haha it really puts the units in perspective if they were real and not the size they are in game.
For those of you who are more familiar with the lore, you wanna explain that fight between Tassadar and Karrigan? I read enough of random wiki's to know who that Dark Archon was, but that fight I mentioned was weird.
When did that happen? Tassadar shot some blue shit at her -- I imagine that was either a psi storm (sounded like one) or his attack that he has, but what the hell was she shooting? More importantly . . . he pretty much mocks her and calls her a pussy at the end. If you're so much more powerful why the hell wouldnt you just kill the bitch? D:

Tassadar had a base psi attack in the campaign of SC1. He basically did shoot blue stuff out.

Yea the perspective is always welcoming. We can see how crazy powerful scourge are, and how little food the people on a battlecruiser must eat to be the same amount as a small squad of marines.

And in SC1, Tassadar keeps on teasing Kerrigan. Basically, it doesn't matter if she's stronger than him, what's important is that she does not use her power to her full extent. (He toys with her)

They both are psionic and use psionic power, that's just the form it takes when Kerrigan uses it, like in the SC2 campaign her psi storm is that texture instead of the typical blue-ish energy.
And Tassadar actually did that to her in the campaign as well, but I'm sure he has a reason.
Protoss actually looks like Protoss and not zerg.. Proportions are less carooney than WoL, across protoss and marines. Better Protoss voice than WoL, which basically sounds like some human with a bad shareware voice modification.
Super impressive, great job... My favorite parts are the zvp space battle with the carrier warping in then getting obliterated by scourge, the dark archon, and the overmind and zerg swarm warping in space above Aiur at the end. Epic work sir.
On October 28 2011 09:04 willoc wrote: Well done! how did you manage to get the original voice of Kerrigan to do the bits in this?
As they said, it was actually the daughter of the original actress. A move I had hoped blizzard would of done for their own game
Amazing doesnt have near enough "oomph" to correctly describe how brilliant this was... I even tried looking up a word to use, like prodigious, phenomenal, miraculous but none of them seemed to really match up. Also, lol at the "wing whip" in the sketch.
Wow this really is incredible, I knew it was in the works for some time but never stayed up to date with the project. It honestly exceeded my expectations immensely!
Blizzard, do yourselves a favour and hire the people responsible for this cinematic. Not because your cinematic team isn't already top notch but this kind of work and dedication, deserves it.
I loved this video. It doesn't seem nearly as polished or fluid as cinematics that come out of blizzard but it made me actually feel like the zerg was an evil swarm. Where as blizzard cinematics never really make me feel anything towards any of the races.
The battle between Kerrigan and Tassadar(Was it Tassadar? I don't know it just looked like a zealot to me) lacked any impact. The sound effects weren't too bad, but the models never showed any type of impact(apart from getting pushed into the rock)
When the Dark Templar(I presume they were DT's) morphed into the Dark Voice(I presume it was a the dark voice, it was the Red archon thing) that felt like it had impact, the ground broke, the sound effects matched it and it felt like it belonged. The battle scene not so much ^^
Very well done, that you for sharing it, I really really enjoyed it and I appreciate the time effort and development that went into this! Way to go bro!

Amazing work!!! Show this to movie companies I'm sure that you could get hired with this quality of work that you are able to produce. Grade A quality, I'd love to see an entire prequel about first contact, this looks like a movie trailer.
Wow, that video was absolutely outstanding. I saw StarCraft Legacy's First Contact cinematic and thought it was awesome, but I didn't have any idea they had anything so ambitious in the works.
I'm amazed. Just wow. Excellent work. I'm assuming everyone who worked on this is already employed somewhere and does this professionally, but if somehow you're not, I think Blizzard is about to hire you.
Very awesome ! I love your attention to details, the models, how you animated the smoke and the effects... it makes this short look very good !
I would glady watch the making of. There's a lot of complex scenes and I'm curious how you approach some of those ( especially crowd shot ) ( alien crowd and ship of course
While I think the mutalisk could have been made sligthly better, I am absolutely blown away with the quality of this. It is far above and beyond any fan made work I've ever seen! SOOOO COOOL!!!!
my god, i almost passed this video over because i thought it would be trash. holycrap. amazing work. though blizzards art and graphics are better, the story and the voice acting brings it on par with a blizzard cinematic. voice acting is great too. i felt like this is exactly what i had in mind when i first heard of SC2
Just fantastic, mate. This and your First Contact cinematic. I'm awestruck by your work and dedication to the SC Universe. I also like that Zeratul and Tassadar are your favourite SC characters. Keep it up!
Well done dude. Looks fucking brilliant. Was it a completely solo effort? I'm a CG artist to so this is wonderful to watch ^_^ Wish i had the motivation to do something this big.
this is incredibly good, awesome and awe-inspiring. I cannot believe you guys made this ^_^
To be perfectly honest i didnt like the way the characters moved or how the action's they made seemed, odd? kinda of slow-mo'd but not. But its still fucking awesome for a such a low-budget production!
I am in awe. First, for the astonishingly high production values. Everything looks so good. The cinematography is excellent. The structure is great. The voice acting feels straight out of Brood War, and the writing is superb.
Second, for the fidelity to the original story arcs. I was extremely disappointed with what I saw as a betrayal of SC+BW in Wings of Liberty single player; to see that old story, recast with modern CGI, and in a cinematic of epic scope and length... Well, I feel like an injustice on Blizzard's part has been marginally corrected by this excellent fan work.
Seeing things like Kazansky's name, the bombing of Korhal, and Tassadar's hallucinated confrontation with Kerrigan... They're nods to the old story that are subtle enough that the unfamiliar viewer can enjoy it, and warms the nostalgic heart of this here nerd.
Bravo. I am extremely impressed. Thank you for this!
This cinematic was fucking incredible. It makes me even more sad that blizzard has, for some reason, decided to make 90% of their SC2 cinematics use the game engine. You lose sooooo much detail when you require on the fly 3D rendering. I'd rather have this guy do all the blizzard cinematics than have so much in-game renders.
Obviously blizzard could make such a cinematic way more impressively detailed, but I REALLY want them to make more quality cinematics in HOTS and LOTV. You just don't notice the cinematic quality with on the fly 3D renders, even when running on ultra/extreme.
Some images from Battlestar Galactica (double cannons on warships firing at camera and the nuke from orbit scene) are very nice and give me flashbacks to endless nights watching BSG. To think that this is done by fans is hard. It is truly elegant.

Thanks!
I don't know if it was directly INSPIRED by BSG, I can say that Chris (The CG mastermind of this production) definately loved watching BSG from start to end. I know that this has actually gone around in the staff of BSG online (over at Bigpoint, shoutout!) and they loved it!
So we're talking about doing a community QA/Podcast in response to community feedback. We'd be able to answer questions, maybe discuss future plans and see about getting some games together with the community. Looking for initiate feedback. Quote/reply to this post and give your thoughts if this would be a good idea?
Amazinggg job. The one thing every single SC game has severely lacked up till now is cinematics of protoss fighting the zerg. We simply don't get it. This was the first time we've really seen it and it was amazing (and those carrier models are what they should have used in WoL).
The protoss cinematics alone make me want LotV more than anything.
The fight scene with Kerrigan seemed a bit cheesy and the characters looked quite stiff during it. Other than that it looked amazing. I can't wait to see a final product!
Only thing: The credit roll song.. you have such epic cinematic music in it, but that song at the end suddenly ruined the whole atmosphere of the movie...
very nice lights and composition of the scene, outstanding variety of models and units the only thing i may see as a issue is the overall little undynamic and unnatural animation of the models and cameras.
but i again i really really apreciate what u showed us here. keep that up
Amazing work guys! The voices were spot on, the graphics were incredible, and I loved the fact that you made it bw themed and covered the major plot lines of bw. Blizz should just hire you to make an entire movie about bw.

Oh yes! Watched it again and it was beautiful, just beautiful. Some of the battle scenes in BSG are still unparalleled as pure entertainment goes, take for instance the battle at Ragnar Station in the pilot. It is obvious to me that even the developers at Blizzard were affected by the visual glory of it.
Best TV series ever? In my opinion, yes, I agree. It was the perfect marriage of philosophy, politics, action, drama and Sci-Fi. It was a dark meditation on the condition of humanity forged in the most disturbed minds to ever grace Science Fiction. You have to be a little twisted to watch it though.
I am rambling .. again thanks for the beautiful imagery!

Holy shit bro, this was amazing. i have to say that this was fantastic. It reminded me a lot of the original starcraft cinematics. But yours was way better!
