“The President of Protoss” Jang “MC” Min Chul (oGs) is now qualified for the Blizzard Cup.
With Moon "MMA" Sung Won (SlayerS) losing at the Sony Ericson GSL Season 7 Code S Round of 8 on the 23rd, MC has placed 3rd in the GSL Points Ranking. MC used to be 3rd with the GSL points with 8,665 points, but the things were going to change if MMA moved on to the round of 4.
MMA lost a very close game to Kim "Oz" Hak Soo (FXO) 2:3, losing his chance to qualify for the Blizzard Cup with having total of 8,268 GSL points ranking 5th. MMA would have moved up to 3rd if he proceeded on to the round of 4.
Because MC has been guaranteed with a spot at the Blizzard Cup, the players that have been confirmed to attend have increased from 6 players to 7 players. The Blizzard Cup, which is expected to open on the 12th will have the GSL Point Rank 1,2 (IMMvp and IMNestea), the IPL Season 3 Winner (Millenium.Stephano), IEM New York winner (coLMVP Dongraegu), MLG Providence Winner (FXO Leenock), and MLG Providence Runner up (coLNaniwa) have been confirmed to attend.
Now there are only 3 more spots left for the Blizzard. The upcoming Dreamhack Winter and WCG 2011 will determine those seats.

Oz did that one for Auir!

So still no idea where they'll take the last player (due to MVP's blizzcon + gsl appearances) from?
Probably invite MMA anyway
|
Aww yeah, Oz bro'in it up for MC, beating MMA so brotoss can go to the Blizzard cup. \o/

Happy MC qualified.
They should invite MMA if there is a spot free though (don't know if they will invite sen for 3rd place at blizzcon or arbitrarly pick someone)

he needs to buy Oz a good dinner or vacation

I'd be a bit sad for MMA if he doesn't get picked for the last spot

MMA isn't in WCG or DH, so it's not gonna happen.

Well, at least a (second) protoss in the tournament, so i'm happy.

MVP?

So happy to see MC qualify but I have a feeling he would have been included anyways. Mvp has two of the slots and if there were repeats them GOM would find suitable replacements. It would make sense to include the player with the 4th highest GSL ranking. Also, the ranking that is used on GOMTV includes the open seasons too where MC is in 3rd place by far. Also, if they had to invite another player, it would probably be a Protoss for some racial diversity since Naniwa is the only one in it right now.

He doesn't deserve it in my opinion. Good luck to him anyways.

Don't worry MMA. MVP's gonna win WCG and they'll probably give you a spot.

MC YEAH !!! Obama Protoss fighting ! The more Protoss players the merrier This Blizzard Cup is going to be so insane.
|
This is going to be an insane competition
|
Mc fan here But agree the idea of inviting MMA. He deserved that and there are not many terrans there anyway. Since there are many good zergs there, we definitely need some top zerg killers.
|
Does that mean MC "Artosised" his way into the tournament?
No disrespect to either player/caster.

Any news about invites from Blizzcon or have they just forgone that?

someone may want to change the title ... its Blizzard cup

I would think it would make more sense to give the spot to Sen and then if he wins DH or WCG, give it to his runner up? I just wish he had some clarification, I want Sen to be there

Oz is helping Auir like a boss, MC hwaiting!
|
I don't think they should invite Sen, there's more than enough zergs there already.
MC lucked his way into it, but this is for the best in terms of racial diversity.
Now just need 1 more Protoss and 2 more Terran and we're good to go~
MMA + Bomber/Polt/MKP/Ganzi/Happy/Consistent Terran that's still relevant? idk man, hard to close in on a 3rd terran.
Hard to choose a 3rd protoss too, but should be Huk!

mvp is taking up like 3 or 4 qualifying spots by himself so i think there will be some invites
|
Hells yeah president toss MC is gonna storm it :D

Would've liked to see MMA instead of Nestea in there, to be honest. Nestea's been Zergbong'ing up a bit lately.

MMA will probably get an invite since MVP qualified 2 times, at least i hope so

yay ! min chul fighting. Just looking at the pools of dreamhack, noticed that there is no top kor aside from DRG who already has his spot, HerO and Genius (might have forgotten someone) so we very well might see another foreigner for the blizzard cup
|
Invite the last GSL champion, it's the only real option without spreading the search into lesser events.
Now that I think about it, it would have made sense in the very beginning if in addition to the ranks #1,#2,#3, the latest GSL tournament's champion to be invited (maybe they decided against this since could have secured 3 spots then? gsl champ, rank #2 & blizzcon), in this case MMA.
|
Patently false. Liquipedia says if a player holds more than one qualifying title (re: Mvp), Blizzard will [i/]invite[i] a suitable candidate.
|
Yay MC hwaiting !
One little detail I noticed, stephano is the only player with no team tag in the article. Wonder if it could be on purpose against Millenium

I really hope they just go down the list in GSL Rankings for subs, or have some other kind of fair system and don't just invite who they randomly feel like to help balance out races etc to cover up for duplicates.

Whether or not MC is still the best Protoss in the world, it is still great to see the 3 best players of their respective races for the best part of a year in 1 small tournament (and therefore more likely to play each other).
|
|
setting up to be a pretty amazing tourney now if only huk could get it somehow!
|
MMA doesn't stand out as much when playing in the GSL, because there is so much talent there. He was one of the first few koreans to compete in the foreign scene, and has performed very well because the competition outside of Korea is weaker.
I agree with BirdKiller MvP and Nestea are the best at their own race based on stats. However during MLG, they kinda tilted, this was due to being unfamiliar with western/european style of play. They both recently joined Quantic Gaming, this will significantly improve their skill, as they will adapt to both styles.
For Protoss, stats wise, MC is the best. However since nerf, and the metagaming, Protoss players have problems being consistent. Although MC is my favorite player, I strongly believe HuK and Naniwa are pretty close. Protoss' are struggling imo.
|

People are so quick to forget... MMA became known in the first place by being Slayers' ace during the first (or one of the first, i don't remember) GTSL where he had an incredible performance winning almost all his ace game. He is also a super tournament finalist and GSL winner, yeah he clearly performed well outside of korea because the competition is weaker and not because he is (or was) a top class terran player.

hmm the invites will really matter to balance the races out. Now with 4 zergs (leenock stephano , nestea and DRG), 2 protosses (Nani and MC) and MVP as the lone terran, The invite most likely will be terran... (i guess MMA). But obviously it depends on the winner of DHW (GOGO HERO!!!)) and WCG(most likely korean IMO and all korean invires are terrans are alll terrans) This will end up as a tourney with very good race balance and will be a great event to watch

3rd place is Sen. And yeah but rumor is that he might not be attending this because of NASL finals. 4th place is naniwa and inviting someone below 4th would be stupid. MVP and Nestea screwed up the Blizzcon invite so much lol

Nice to see that MC will make it into the tournament. Now there is one race for each one of the three GSL slots. Interested to see who will get the the invite since Mvp takes up two slots. Maybe MMA since Blizzard Cup only one Terran at the moment, pending DH and WCG winners.

naniwa was invited as 2nd from providence, not because of blizzcon. Considering they already have overlapping in most of the tourneys, i feel that they will add in second from WCG/Dreamhack/IPL or Idra as MLG season rank 1 in points. All depends on whether MVP wins WCG as well, which would give him a grand total of 3 invites :D

Mr. Chae can always just say MVP and Nestea got their spots from Blizzcon and invite the 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots of GSL in terms of ranking. Actually, he just might do that simply because of the fact that there are so many zergs and racial balance is good for viewership in general. Heck... I'm ok with less terrans... but having only 1 terran is a bit too ridiculous.

These guys saying that MC got lucky, didn't deserve a spot etc, the criteria is, and has been for months, laid bare in front of your eyes people.
First, second and third in GSL points. Winner of various tournaments of prestige.
That's it, that's the criteria to qualify for this tournament. It's not some invitational shit, where popular players are put in the spotlight to see who's the less terrible one between them (you know what I'm talking about). Everyone who gets in has earned his spot. End of story.
Congrats to MC, MVP, Nestea, DRG, Stephano, Naniwa, Leenock and future participants that will EARN the right to play in this sick tournament.

Actually it used to just be GSL ranks 1-10 and then they suddenly changed it. Blame Gom for changing the rules if you wanted MMA in there.
|
Mma is so Danm good hate to miss him but mc ain't no scrub either
|
Hope MC brings his A -game He's been needing a major victory for a while now
|
I'm glad to see so many people want MMA in for this. His accomplishments are overall the best and most recent of any non-Mvp terran anyway. It is kind of sad for his jealous terran brothers if he's invited again :3
Congrats to MC though. It's always more interesting when MC is around. His "scary" face is too rich; I can still picture him doing it to Day[9] for messing with his keyboard.

Yeah, MC's got the right personality to hype up the crowd. By the way, anyone got a picture of the "scary" face concerning Day9?

<3 MC
MMA so close though >_<;;

Alright MC!! Hope he does well :D

A brotoss in need is a brotoss indeed
|
whoever said he lucked this out is pretty damn stupid.
he accumulated his points by himself how could you called that "luck" ?
damn ppl..

MMA deserves it the most but you never know what might happen.

Great news, GJ Oz :D
Although since MVP already got invited due to his Blizzcon win I'd bet they'll get MMA as the 4th in GSL ranking.
|
That's hilarious. MMA recently won a GSL and has won an MLG before and yet they invite the runner up of MLG providence instead. lol @ "determining the best of the best player".

He didn't get invited. He got in because he is third in GSL points behind MVP and Nestea. MMA is fourth; if he had beaten Oz, he would have been in the tournament. More than likely MMA will get invited anyway with MVP already having a Blizzcon spot.

As cool as MMA is, I am a huge fan of MC. I'll take MC over MMA anyday.
|
MC deserves it given his 3rd place GSL rank points. He's also a huge ratings booster because he's so popular with foreign fans.
MVP already has 2 spots and might win another 2 lol. His other spots should probably just go to the next in line GSL ranked players.
Interestingly, both MC and MMA maximized their foreign fan popularity after beating Idra and doing a ceremony. Everyone should take note of it, that's how you become famous.
MC is Idra's kryptonite, and given how many anti-fans he has, that probably boosts MC heavily. MC is 12-3 against Idra. Although he technically lost a Bo3 to Idra once, he didn't lose the series because MLG turned it into an extended series Bo7 and MC won that convincingly after getting over some jetlag that even Idra said in an interview he felt was the reason he won previously.

If MVP or anyone else gets more spots, they should just go down the line of GSL Rankings.
Which would be:
4. MMA 5. Polt 6. MarineKing 7. July

Yes going down the GSL rankings is the correct way they should proceed. Although I'm hoping they invite runner up for WCG perhaps... That's the only way I feel MKP has a shot getting in. lol
Well I guess Polt ain't too bad either.

I think, MVP gets 2 slots I forsee a MVP Vs. MVP final

Where can MVP win his 4th spot? He isn't attending Dreamhack, only WCG.
Hoping IdrA will qualify @ DH or WCG, he just makes tournaments more entertaining due to controversy he brings
Would love to see the tournament filled up by a liquid member, too bad only Ret, Sheth & HerO got a chance, because there are no liquid players @ WCG, and those are the only 3 remaining players @ Dreamhack.

So I hear MC is too smart too strong to get tricked by pickpockets and hunts them down when they try. Good for him

I think Sen would be an awesome person to invite, 3rd at Blizzcon seems acceptable reason, considering that the top 2 both got in through GSL points as well.

I don't see why people are so defensive about this issue. Yes, MC earned his points, but he is certainly fortunate that MMA did not win his RO8 match. MC obviously had no bearing on the outcome of that match, so he's lucky it worked out in his favor.
imo luck has some sort of an impact on every facet of our lives, anyway.

Hmm well, if they take MVP from blizzcon win, and don't count him then because of that toward the top gsl points that would bump mma up to third. So there's hope

If only the NASL winner get to play in blizzard cup.
DRG got lucky, others are well deserved.
What happens if MVP takes WCG as well? :O
