Pretty much this for me. I still log on and play a few games, and with the new ladder maps this season I might play again for a bit, but its just boring. BW had such fine and rewarding gameplay, SC2 is just like a dumbed down version with infinite buildings on hotkeys which makes macro a joke.

Oh, I get it. There's a drop in people playing so it's Blizzard's GUI that's at fault? I was wondering how long it would take people to forget that people aren't playing 1v1s anymore because...well....they don't want to anymore and blame Blizzard for it. GG Blizz, you killed your own game!
Are we sure SC2ranks is infallible in this instance? Maybe something screwed up on their end. Losing 1/2 of your players over a (very short) season isn't good at all, to be perfectly honest.

Well, I know for sure that none of my real life friends play anymore. I have quite a few friends through battle.net that never play anymore either. Its funny because now that I am the last one of my friends still actively playing I am slowly losing interest and for some reason or another getting more frustrated with my losses. I think I just play now because I hate watching TV and don't have any other interests that I can do in the evenings...

I still play regularly, maybe not ladder but customs with some online friends. I don't see cheese/all-ins that often on ladder, played 13 games today didn't see it once.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people just watch and don't play, though. Agreed, this is a bummer. My only sad point with the ladder is then it is locked and everyone does mass cheese to get as many quick wins as possible. But I don't want an easy game. Though a more stable game might be nice. Glad im not the only one who sees the mass cheese kind of stuff
If you do not enjoy beating tons of cheesy scrubs(and getting beaten by them), do not play when the ladder is locked. Its a savage land out there and they want you ladder points.

Its not supposed to reward you with anything but fun, what do you want, a cookie and a pat on the head? Somebody to comfort you? idk

It's because Blizzard is still in charge. I haven't spent much time with any blizzard game beside starcraft 1 and 2, but everything I've gathered during my time here is that basically blizzard suck terribly at dealing with the community, but are great at making games.
Starcraft 1 ladder was fairly shitty wasn't it? I remember hearing stories of how progamers were forced to use hacks on the ladder to qualify for events, because if they didn't hackers and other progamers using hacks would surpass them in points. The really "great" ladders for broodwar were the fan made PGT and ICCup. The only real working antihacks in broodwar were programmed by community members.
The thing that differentiates SC2 from SC1 and possibly from wc3 is that they completely shit the bed on their initial interface choices. There are what, 12 actively played UMS maps in sc2, with no chance of being able to make a new one and instantly have people join it? Who wants that. You can't practice specific maps against specific races? Why are we unable to name "custom" games with custom names? All we can do is host a map, maybe we really don't want to play a mirror matchup right now for whatever reason, but if a mirrored opponent comes in, you ARE going to have to play them, or.....quickly hit the logout button because there is no "cancel" game option?!?!?!?!?! What the fucking fuck???
TLDR: Blizz is doing what the normally do, except they made some really ass-hatted and poorly planned choices, which they are too slow to fix due to the nature of being a large company with so much on the line.

Does blizzard really want that many people playing SC2 though? If less people are on at the same time, they would have less traffic on their servers and since they've already made money from selling the game..
Why would they want to make a system to encourage people idling in chat channels and using up their server capacity? If you want to chat, go on forums like TL and do it there. Of course I am just speculating..

BNET 0.2 is definitely a huge part of it.
Even BW feels like there is a bigger community than SC2 simply because of the chat interface. I often sit on BNET1 for hours just chatting with lots of random people. Its much easier to set up a custom game the way you want as well, and way way way easier to randomly host a custom UMS and get people to join.
This is how custom maps got popular, just create a game called BGH or DragonballZ and wait 5 mins for random players who see it to join. Now players have to specifically join the map first, and guess whether other people have created the map, thats really stupid.
Blizzard seems to think that ladder is the most important part of SC2. Its actually the least. Probably 95% of BW players never played ladder.

I haven't really run in to cheeses in a long time in ladder. Some 1-base allins yes, but not anything really stupid like cannon rush or 6pool. Even a 1base all-in is ok to play against in terms of gameplay. Stupid cheeses like 6pools/cannon rushes/proxy raxes are autowin most of the time there is no reward in winning (and even no rage in losing :D ).
Terran has pretty much disappeared from ladder, which in my case is ok because i didn't even like tvt. Even if the official stat is like 28%, i'm sure a lot of them have stopped playing (but are still ranked) because you rarely meet them in ladder. TvP lategame isn't fun to play in my opinion with the endless kiting of chargelots. I like macro games in general so i'm thinking about changing race (not sure they are any more fun) or quitting. Oh and I play for fun only, don't care about ranks or leagues (actually seeing a 6pool and knowing i will win this game makes me want to quit rather than play 10 more minutes and win). Am I alone?

the game is good, but blizzard sucks. I feel like they dont actually understand the game with all the stupid patches they make, and as Terran, its really annoying when blizzard nerfs you every single time. It makes you feel like they don't really care for the Terrans as much as the other races.
Also, the UI is just terrible. No custom games lobby system like that in AoE3, where people would see that you started a game and would join, no clans, the chat channels are terrible, the chat system itselft is really hard to use. The game just feels really bare.

Step 1: Make game ridiculously boring. Step 2: Users drop dramatically. Step 3: Release expansion pack. Step 4: Users skyrocket. Step 5: ??? Step 6: Profit.
|
People lose interest over time because they aren't hardcore SC players.. Hardcore players have played every day since 1998.. Games naturally filter out the casuals and that is fine.. i'd rather play other HC players and the less casuals the better, imo.
|
SC2 units are just more boring and not as dynamic at BW units. Marauder, collosi, roaches are the 3 biggest example of this, A move range units wohoo! Compared that to Vultures + spider mines and reavers and defilers. I play Terran and I am tired of watching and playing bioball myself. I can still see myself playing BW if not for the shit UI and the non-existent ladder matchmaking.

These days I only play about 5-10 games a week, with school I just don't have the time to play a bunch of games. I also play more than just Starcraft. When I didn't have school I would play SC most of the time and take breaks playing other games, but now I only have enough free time to just play SC or play other games, and if you don't play SC for most of that time you will not improve and when you are not getting better it is a very boring game and frustrating to play.
|
maybe compare those numbers to any online computer game. other games might exhibit similiar trends in the months after release. might have nothing to do with SC2 just that people lose interest in games after a few months.
|
Hard game. Dicks you'd curb stomp IRL talking shit and you can't get your hands on them. Short attention span.
|
For me it's the impossibility to have several accounts for off racing, trying new strats etc... I m still playing 0-5 games a week, but if the single account feature is not lifted, i m definitly not buying HOTS.
Bnet 2.0 is truly schizophrenic in the sense it does not help the social aspect, but the solo play is also terrible. The custom map system is terrible, you can't use it to practice different strats unless you have friends at your level. So you re left with ladder. I reached the point in high diamond where the game becomes very boring. PvT I have to survive until mid-late game without falling too far behind, I usually get there always with the same robotic play. PvZ i cheese them early or 2 base all in, otherwise they start massing mutalisk and it's gg. As a casual, I would need a practice account to try different strategies, or start off racing. But with the current system i ll drop a lot of games and then I have to mindlessly farm weaker opponents for dozen of games if I want to play my main race/more well known builds again.

I agree this. There are lots of flaws in this game and Blizzard doesnt even try to fix.Game is almost 2 years old and we still have shitty chat bad ui bad custom map system.

Lack of community. I need another source for social connection, like TL, to meet anyone to game with
