Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either. |
Seems a very steep prize, certainly up from what were accustomed to. Especially as the arenas have been billed as glorified qualifiers for the 'real' championship.
I really think MLG needs to take in some of the experiences from app-stores and Steam. Cheaper very often means sales that more than makes up for the reduction in prize. Focus on lowering the obstacles for sales (homepage/payment system/ease of use). It is so much easier to spend 5 dollars (4,99^^). 20 dollars is a semi-serious decision for everyone, 5 dollars much easier to shell out for a weekend of streams. Remember, you're catering to a worldwide audience from countries with very different economies. I really hope you will re-consider the prize-point.

People, people let's not get riled up here now. The Winter Championships, the main event, will still be free to watch. I am not exactly happy with the change, but I understand that MLG as a business needs to be financially sustainable or it will stop providing content.
|
guess I avoid starcraft websites for a week so I don't get spoiled, and watch the VODs.
$20 for one event? I'd pay that for a year.

Bit harsh. GSL is arguably of at least equal quality and is much cheaper (a whole month of content for less). I agree that monetizing events through PPV can be a way of finally making eSports lucrative but it should be in relation to the competition.

For $20 I can gain access to a variety of porn for an entire month instead!

I only started watching starcraft in the first place cuz it was free

from the release:
"If $20 is out of your budget or if you just don't like the idea of paying to view the Arena Live, there are other options. Pool some money with friends, or attend a Barcraft in your area. If there are no local Barcrafts, organize one—and let us know your plans so we can help promote it. Lastly, all matches will of course be made available free to everyone as VOD, one week after the Arena wraps up. "
pretty sure they're okay with barcrafts

MLG does not have a monopoly on good starcraft content and neither are they the very best at it. I will not pay 20$ to watch any 3day tournament, especially when assembly runs parallell.
|
MLG is so greedy it's not even funny. They're charging 20$ for a 3day stream with ads while us gold-members aren't covered at all. Yet they have such a low price pool compared to a tournament like Dreamhack where you get HD stream for FREE while sitting thru 1 telia ad with calm music in it between each game. I'd rather donate 20$ to DreamHack and watch Assembly than pay MLG 20$ and watch both. Sundance is only in it for the money.
|
I think its pretty impossible for most EU watchers to justify buying this.
You got Assembly going on during the day/evening anyway with a sick line-up and its free, so why stay up and pay for another tournament?
|
My problem isn't that they are charging, or even the price (more than a month of gsl), but that gold members aren't included. I think its really bad so have those who already paid for your premium service to have to pay again to watch the winter arena.
It'd be like GOM saying, well you have to pay for each arena of legends even if you already bought a season pass.
|
MLG provides great service for nearly no cost to viewers - viewers love mlg and rave about it. Stop providing service for free but still provide great service (hopefully) - uproar. We can be a pretty cheap/non-supportive community sometimes.
|
I can give gom $20 for a month of gsl or I can give MLG $20 for a weekend of this winter arena thing :< price seems too high

On February 14 2012 08:09 jinixxx123 wrote: i dunno why the price is so high though, I agree mlg deserves some money, And they will most likely get it from me. But for a game thing that is very much in its infancy (esports), this is not the right way to go about it.
Like for instance, Lets say there is a potential for 75,000 viewers or more this tournament . With a price of $20 dollars that could mean only 1% might be even willing to pay that much. Where as lets say the price was $5 dollars for a weekend pass. You might get somewhere around the vicinity of 30-40% actually willing to pay.
so if we do some maths
1% of 75000 = 750 ppl, then 750 x 20 = 15000 dollars to be made from this tournament
Or
35% of 75000 = 26250 ppl, then 26250 x 5 = 131125 dollars they can make.
Conclusion? mlg will make way more money if their fucking product was not so expensive.
Those are totally reasonable numbers. Not irrationally and totally randomly unsupported numbers you picked there.

Could not have said it better myself, the argument that you are spolied if you can't afford 20 bucks is just retarded.

is this winter arena thing different to the whole MLG circuit, like as a seperate tournamnt? or does it just work as another place to get points for the final MLG? sorry if thats confusing :s and $20 is far too much to pay, sorry MLG, you hold an awesome tournament, but i think its just too much to ask

This always pissed me off about GSL, I buy the package to be spammed commercials while trying to navigate their shitty Gom Player. There will probably be plenty of Nos and Dr.Peppers

I'd gladly save 20 dollars and wait a week lol, wtf are they thinking? It's not worth it to watch it live.

And since MLG is promoting barcraft in their press release, it's fair to assume they've waived that.

I'll probably watch the finals at a barcraft. Not too interested in spending money on something that I'm only gonna watch 1/3rd of.
