What about the MLG stream that would be free and run with ads?
Will any part of the Arena be free?
The Dr Pepper MLG Ultimate Access stream will be completely free all weekend. The first match aired on each of the four other streams, on both Friday and Saturday, will also be free to everyone.
Will it turn up in the calender?

I agree with TL. Rules are rules.

The way I see it, TL.net already had written policies and rules for how and what types of events would be announced on their calendar. It is not making any exceptions nor changing the rules on their users like MLG did for their Gold Members.
The decision was a rational one. TL could have given into this emotional ride MLG has taken us on, and said "blah blah blah support eSports blah blah grow blah sustain blah blah blah blah." They did not. Yet, I still found the occasional post that seemed to question TL's support in eSports, whom they choose to support, or how they should be supporting. Sigh. I am glad some of us have corrected vision otherwise it would be the blind leading the blind here.

good move, thanks for making a detailed announcement <3 TL

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think this is the right decision.

Very good decision.
Putting the monetization of esports above everything else (I am looking at you MLG) is a mistake.
|
I like it that you explained your decision. Tho I disagree with it.

well Sundance kept talking about how great it would be to "monetize the audience". its seems equitable for TL.Net to "monetize all the pay per view streams"
while we're all busy running around monetizing stuff.. i hope the game remains just as much fun.

If you live in a dreamworld maybe. But that's another discussion.

I think GSL AoL PPV tournaments have been part of the tournament tracker in the past. I'd say TL's role is to provide information (including easy acces to streams), so I'm not a fan of this decision. It seems a little petty not to list winter arena, a major tournament, while listing every (close to) amateur tournament prominently on the sidebar.
Plus, I don't think TL is in a place where it can make judgements about how tournaments should monetize.

From a utility standpoint I would actually like to have it in the calendar just for the wiki-link, so that I can check the updated tournament results with one click from the front page (while I'm watching assembly^^).

TOTALLY agree and support teamliquid on this one. They are raking in the cash but aren't even willing to pay for advertisement? Seriously...
But also:
Fine, give the premium users extra features, higher resolutions, vods, whatever fancy shmancy stuff you want, but let the people who love the game but can't afford it at least see the basic game and run adds for them to increase your revenue, while the premium one has no adds. The people who can afford it will still pay for it rather than watching in 240p with adds, and also benefit from all the extra features.
That's exactly what gom is doing, you get a better stream and access to vods for the premium, and a very low quality and basic stream for free as well. So many people are paying for it even if the premium stream is by far inferior to the streams of most tournaments, since they are in 720 or 1080 and the gom stream is like 480.
The gom stream is 480 and there are TONS of people paying for it, and there's no backstage passes, there's no extra streams / alternative commentators yet people pay for it. MLG can just leave the free stream at 240 instead of 480, there is a huge quality difference between 240 and 480. If the free streams in the normal tournaments would be 240 and filled with adds you'd see A LOT more people paying for it.

Well, this I disagree with. You have other shows where it's nothing but players, casters, whomever sitting and talking about stuff about starcraft that are featured (sometimes not that close to starcraft even). Just because this stream is tied to a tournament why should it be judged differently? At least I hope it will show up in the stream list if not under a tournament topic. Watching as hotbid put it "players in a lounge" is more interesting than many featured streams atm.

GSTL has always been free to view live.

Weird, semantical decision by TL. Shouldn't affect MLG that much, regardless.
