"teacash Canada. February 23 2012 06:00. Posts 441 PM Profile Quote Edit # How come this event isnt listed on the teamliquid events list?" Definitely did not expect a long, eloquent and well-reasoned answer from Hot Bid and TL staff to my question heh. I figured the reasons were intentional, but figured it was just a gesture of disapproval by a few TL admins. Totally agree with TL's stance here, though I also hope for MLG to be successful with this payment model. I'd buy a ticket if I had more time to spare this weekend.. Also, anyone know if tickets will be discounted on sunday for the champs, and if so by how much?

It had no free stream (or VODs!) - MLG Arena at least has all VODs free in a week? + Each day of MLG Arena has 1 free hour, which would be nice to check from TL's Calendar, right? ... What this accomplishes is making me go to MLG's website to check this event's schedule which - I get it, alright, I get it! - "the site sucks !!!", and that's so sad. By the way, this from OP: We didn't for GSL's Arena of Legends when it was briefly pay only not sure what it means exactly, I'm pretty sure AoL was listed at a time when it had no free stream option, am I mistaken?

There is a reason why Major League Gaming chose to go PPV for their event, it's because the costs of running huge offline events are massive, and unless revenue is made back from esports, the bubble will burst. There is only so much that relying on ad-supported free streams and sponsorships can offer Remember the "dot com bubble" back in the late 1990s/early 2000s? Why do you think that burst? Because many companies couldn't figure out how to turn their businesses profitable and lost all the cash they needed to operate. Put it this way, MLG had to make their money somehow and when they're under pressure to offer a much larger prize pool and more large-key events for the 2012 Pro Circuit, their only choice is to go PPV, as taking direct payments would theoretically earn them more than what a sponsor or a few stream ads would pay them. Also, on this policy: 2. We require an embedded TL stream. We want our users to be able to go and watch in one click. We want users to stay on TL, not be constantly redirected off site. This is good for us and good for the convenience of our users. GomTV, the only major SC2 e-sports broadcaster to require a propietary media player to watch the stream, hence their stream cannot be embedded within TL.net On February 23 2012 12:51 Hot_Bid wrote: We make exceptions sometimes, but very rarely. For instance we do for GOM, and I don't think it'd be fair to them since their entire company is named after GOM player to force them not to use that player and embed on TL. On the note of what Hot_Bid said. Yes, it's true GOMTV are named after their propietary media player. However, should they really be forcing their viewers to use their software? The funny thing is they can easily switch to say.... Twitch TV. After all, they've used Twitch TV to broadcast
The reason why I chose to bash GOM Player was simple. It's less convenient to use propietary software than it is to use a browser based system, especially when every other major tournament uses a freemium Flash based stream that is easily embeddable on TL.net To put it this way, I think TL.net's calendar listing policies should be amended, especially if they want e-sports to succeed. This is clearly going to be a massive hit to MLG if one of the major SC2 sites won't directly list MLG Winter Arena on their calendar/mainpage.

How can they justify that? 80k viewers sounds pretty low but they need only 10% of that amount to make it a big succes with $20 dollar PPV tickets. I somewhere read that the costs of the tournament are around $100k, so $20 dollars * 8000 tickets = $160k on PPV alone. If they really would have 80k viewers when they would have a free livestrean, they should stop immediately. TB had almost that amount on SCi4.

Read the OP next time before commenting. AoL was NOT listed when it was PPV, it was listed after it... when it went free LQ. So yeah, your entire point is irrelevant and false.

Hot'Bid really brought it down to the easiest to understand! BIG respect for TL to do this, because it is also kind of a danger to themself.

You remember it right, there's revisionist history at work in this thread. As Milkis and others have stated, the AOL tournament was listed on the right even before it was free. But don't worry, TL will cover their asses and everyone will insist that double standards are not at work......./rolls eyes
