Hello everyone! This is the moment that we have all been waiting for. We are extremely thrilled to announce IPL4! This event will span three days, April 6th, 7th, and 8th, at a soon-to-be-named venue in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature both StarCraft II and League of Legends tournaments! This is an all ages event!
StarCraft II Details
When: Friday, April 6th through Sunday, April 8th. Each day will be completely full of streamed games, both from our completely open qualifiers and our group stages.
Where: Soon to be announced venue in Las Vegas, Nevada!
Buy your Spectator passes here: http://ipl4.eventbrite.com We currently have an offer to purchase spectator tickets at 50% off: Facebook Discount Page (You may need to disable adblock or try more than one browser if this does not work correctly the first time!) And again, this is an all ages event!
What: A 128-man, double-elimination open bracket, with the Top 8 joining our online qualifiers and invitees in a 20-man group stage, with each person in groups earning guaranteed prize money. Group stages will have an elimination component, where only two players from each group will move into an 8-man, double-elimination bracket for the championship. Every game in the group stage matters, as payout is determined by each person's final standing in the group. Group tiebreakers will be determined by head-to-head results first, followed by map score.
Buy your competitor passes ($40 per person) here: http://ipl4sc2.eventbrite.com/ Player passes are capped at 128, and there are less than 100 passes remaining! ACT QUICKLY, THESE WILL SELL OUT! And again, this is an all ages event!
Here is an infographic for the breakdown of our tournament and its streamed games:
Official Map Pool IPLMap Sanshorn Mists AE IPLMap Atlantis Spaceship IPLMap Antiga Shipyard IPLMap Daybreak IPLMap Tal'Darim Altar LE IPLMap Cloud Kingdom IPLMap Metropolis
Note: Each player will get one map veto per match. All maps will have gold bases removed after Team Arena Challenge 2 concludes, before IPL4, so as not to break consistency in that tournament.
The prize breakdown ($100,000 total) is as follows:
Casters: CatsPajamas, Doa, HDStarCraft, PainUser, TotalBiscuit, dApollo, and maybe even more!
Streams: There will be two live streams all weekend long for StarCraft II, and one for League of Legends, as well as one roaming LiveU camera crew. More information on these stream times, links, and more will be coming soon.
League of Legends online qualifiers are still ongoing, but be on the lookout for information regarding our 8-team tournament in the near future!
More information will be coming in the very near future! Please feel free to book any flights or travel arrangements, purchase spectator and competitor passes, as they are limited in number, but you will want to wait to book your hotel until we release our special discounted hotel packages at the venue. Thanks very much for reading, we all hope to see you there!

We were able to solve TB's issues about one week after IPL 3. Unfortunately too late for IPL 3, but excited to have him there for IPL 4!
We are not going behind a PPV paywall. Details about streams to come next week.
We will be hiring mainly our superstars at IPL 3 (don't panic if you haven't gotten an email or skype call yet, IPL 3 staff!), but there may be room for potential new blood. Will update as I figure that out.

A million billion times this
Please don't go through with this map pool.
Tal Darim is an excellent map and came out as THE MOST balanced map from the Playhem stats so it should definitely remain.
Shakuras produced the epic finale to the best series in SC2 history between DRG and MMA.
However Calm before the Storm and Terminus are both awful. The former is basically an enforced 15 minute no rush snooze fest while the later has some disgusting positional imbalance given certain spawn positions.
EDIT: I also like the point bought up that inviting 12 players or whatever then just handing them atleast $1000 when they can lose every game they play is... a bit poor. On the one hand I like the idea of not having an incredibly top heavy prize pool and spreading it out a bit more but on the other getting a grand for potentially not winning one map... hmm, easy money i guess.
So the invited players basically get a free $1000 at least?
And are you always going to be inviting the winners of previous IPLs? So can we expect to see Idra, Stephano, Whitera, and the winner of this one at IPL5?
Can't wait for this! Quite possibly the best instance of a foreigner plowing through Code S Koreans; can Stephano defend his title? Will there be another foreigner upset? Can't wait to find out!
Sad face... would maybe go if it was one week earlier. Sounds like it will be an awesome event though! I really like the double elimination format throughout and the balance of invited and open qualifiers.
edit: It's not exactly unique to this event, but the prize dropoffs in sc2 events are steep! Progamer is rough life yo.
A championship bracket should never include Bo3's imo, its just not enough to decide when the pricepool is this big! Come on, Bo5 from at least Ro8 on would be nice.
I predict we see someone come from the losers bracket, you know, coming back from the dead, on easter. I see what you are doing IPL, giving yourself a nice story line there.
IPL3 was pretty awesome. Although I did feel it was a bit weird having it inside a Casino. But hey it worked out. I wonder where the venue will be for IPL4 exactly in Vegas. Nice big prize pool, 40k for winner :O
Wow nothing new. Knew it was going to be in Vegas just didn't know the dates. A ton of stuff still TBA with the event only a mere 5-6 weeks away. CAN'T WAIT!!!

thanks for clearing things up this looks very promising.
nice! A sc2 event in vegas!!!! I've pretty much gone to EVO every year since 2003 and the move to vegas made it sooooo much better. I hope lots of people show up to this and a couple more companys try and hold some of their major live events in vegas as well.
Even with all the problems with the connection last year, it was still an amazing spectator event. IPL3 would have been perfect if things went well for them hosting their first huge LAN, I am expecting this year to be incredible. Hopefully more of the same backstage content.
You announced that top 2 of the big qualifier events got qualified, and yea, tails who were 2nd in UK i44 qualifier surely did get invited, but where is moon? :O He should be there aswell, since you said yourself that top 2 of those events would get an invite, at least keep your promises
Nobody is going to buy the premium (for live in person viewing) if you arent putting all the details of what it includes. Mostly all you got is, t shit and seating with awesome "PERKS". just keep that in mind so its not like PPSL xD
Please to try to hold this tournament rather early, Las Vegas is so many timezones away from Europe, adn it would be nice to atleast watch some of the games early.
Is Lani and the rest of beast crew going to be doing their thing? because I will happily pay money to watch that in between games and probably when some of the games are on as well.
I almost want there to be problems with the network, or battle.net a little

You guys are so awesome, even more so for every point you listed here. So pumped for IPL4.
I've been looking forward to this, can hardly wait. And man, the tournament is in Las Vegas, talk about prestige, and a huge prize pool and 1st place prize.
I would kindly ask you to reconsider the map pool. Too many of the maps are phased out in other tourneys, and for good reason (Calm before the storm, Shakuras and Terminus); they lead to rather boring and predictable games. As for the new maps, from what I've watched on them in the IPL TAC and fight clubs, I think they lead to generally worse games then more accepted maps.
For example, most of what I've seen on Atlantis Spaceship looks like games where neither player came prepared and you hardly see any interesting use of the map features. Ofcourse tournaments need 'fresh' maps, but at some point you have to consider if the changes in the mappool lead to more interesting games, and I don't think it has so far.
Other than that, can't wait to watch it. IPL3 was great.
I live in Las Vegas Think im going to sign up for open brackets see what I can do however if someone can answer me on a question it would be nice. If I sign up for a 40 dollar player pass lets say the first day i get eliminated .. am I able to still come the 2 other days to watch? Just on that 40 dollar player pass?
Loved all the IPL's so far, I have no doubt that the 4th installment will be even better. That prize pool is sick, it will surely attract the best of the best. One small complaint though, like others have already noted, the map pool should be changed imo. Good luck!

You should be able to, thats how it was for IPL3. A competitor pass was pretty much = to a spectator pass + chance to play in open bracket
Can't say i'm ecstatic about TB and the lack of fighting games after the stuff you guys are doing with Cross Assault, but can't wait as ever, last time was impeccably produced and it should be p sweet.
The only thing I can complain about is that you have Calm Before the Storm and Terminus. Calm Before the Storm is ridiculously imbalanced and was removed from the GSL immediately because it sucks (according to Artosis). Terminus is okay in balance but has been around for far too long and almost no large tournaments us it except the IPL because makes for very boring games. Please make a more up to date map pool next IPL!
Get some Wolfdor over there And also i thought it was top 2 from the lan qualifiers? I think it's pretty retarded to grant top 2 from ONLINE qualifiers but not LAN qualifiers, dont really understand your thought process there?
Please please please, reconsider the map pool; 9 maps in a single tournament is quite a large map pool. For example, it's been widely proven that Terminus and Calm Before the Storm are terrible to play on. At the same time, the choice to use newer maps are great, they deserve to see more daylight.
Really dislike the mappool. But im most likely not going to come anyway, as flying there with only 8 qualifier spots seems too big of a risk. Would really like to go to vegas though :D
Yayyy, I have renters moving into my old house the weekend before that but we have an agreement that I get a couch whenever I come to Vegas so wooo! (It helps that they're my friends)
On February 26 2012 05:00 Olinim wrote: Nice, though a bit terran heavy so far.
Well, that was pretty inevitable given how good the Korean Terrans are. Hopefully with so many qualifier spots at the open qualifiers and given how Terran-light the foreign scene is, I hope and think that the overall racial balance will be pretty even in the end, though a Korean Terran will probably take it.

As a IGN prime member will i have similar benifits to last IPL(quad view and special streams?)
Extremely glad to be going to another IPL! Everyone should hop on the player/spec passes before they gone, because this is going to be one hell of an event.
Bad format as we all know by now (because of the anticlimatic finals). Alternative: play out the tournament to top 2 from groups and top 2 from open, then switch to single elimination (alternativly top4 from each). It is still fair cause in group stage you can also afford a loss or even 2 and still advance.

But that makes it very hard for a player from the open bracket to get anywhere, as only top 2 rather than 8 make it out. The double elimination format does help ensure that the best players have a better chance of making it to the finals.

Someone should frontpage this for the win!
If it wasn't so sudden and expensive travel I would... But I fear that if I happen to come across the funds, they will be gone lol... If only there was some way to get help to get there by volunteering for some work or something, But I want to compete as well =/
I was always hoping I would have a few months to figure out how to plan this, and not be so close to MLG columbus.

IPL feels like the champions of their previous events should be invited, seems reasonable to me.
I agree and I disagree.
You invite your most recent champion because you have some sort of a guarantee that he'll perform up to standards because of his fairly recent form when he got that title. This assumes however that you run your tournament sort of frequently.
IdrA's IPL1 victory will by then be a year ago. A lot of things happen within a year and some players completly vanish or get a lot worse compared to their earlier results. Just take a look at people like Jinro (GSL RO4), iNcontrol (4th at MLG), Naama (Dreamhack 2010 winner) and then try to say that a person's results from a year ago are a good indicator for somebody's skill today.
Having said all this though I can understand that they invited their old champions even though their recent results have been shaky; especially IdrA's recent performance (he hasn't won a single series ever since the NASL Finals at December 2nd) has been absolutely abysmal. However having said that both IdrA and WhiteRa are massive crowd drawers so from a money point of view this is a very good idea. At the end of the day IGN is a business and it would be stupid not to invite these very big names.
1| NASL S2 Finals. He wins 2-0 against Strelok, then falls against PuMa with 0-3. -> Losing against PuMa is not something to be ashamed off, even though PuMa's TvZ hasn't been his best matchup. 2| WCG. Falls in group phase, group filled with: Titan, dKiller, Orly, MasterOk, Kelevra and Capoch. -> IdrA should definatly win aginst every single one of those players with the exception of Titan. Considering that he won his game against Titan he should have advanced easily. 3| GSL Code S. Losing against NesTea and Lucky. -> Going down against NesTea is ok and expected. Losing against Lucky should not have happened as Lucky's ZvZ up until then was fairly shaky. 4| GSL Code A. Going down 2-0 against Avenge. -> Avenge? Who? 5| MLG Winter Arena. Gets eliminated in Loser's round 1 after losing against Oz and NesTea. ->Even in great form IdrA could realistically lose against these guys. Really tough luck with the bracket though. 6| Showmatches. Both against Taeja and aLive he went down 4-0. 7| Team Leagues. I don't value the Team Leagues that highly for getting an idea on someone's recent form as they are all Best of 1's. However when comparing his losses (ThorZain, HerO, Leenock, Sheth and oGs.Illusion) against his single victory (Axslav) the image that IdrA has been doing bad only gets reinforced.
TLDR: In the end it's a good decision to invite back all their past decisions. One of them for his current form (Stephano) and two of them because they are fan favorites that will increase viewership by quite a lot. (IdrA and WhiteRa)

Doubt many Koreans will come. The trip is quite expensive and you'd have to go very deep in order to recover the cost. If anything we might see teams like Startale, MVP, FXO or oGs send one or possibly two players with support from their international partners.

As to the yet to be named venue: I would not be surprised if it would be at the Caesars Palace. They seemed to work pretty good at IPL3.

Everything looks excellent... except please, no TotalBiscuit. His casting at ROG this weekend was terrible -- he just doesn't know the game. And his forced "excited shoutcasting" mode is even more annoying.

I concur with the above. I'd like to see mcDuffs casting in IPL 4. Why? Because his commentary is fluid, fun and very very entertaining. The guy loves eSports as much as we, the fans, do.

Could you please think of the EU viewers when you plan the schedule. Im not asking to move it to early morning or something. Im willing to stay up quite late to watch SC, but the last time really frustrated me when it was getting really early and you showed LoL which nobody wanted to see. You lost lots and lots of EU viewers that time ...

It would be amazing to give one of the streams to the IMBA crew or just mcDuffs solo. Even the Beast crew would have some real competition
Please bring the best and the most entertaining caster for the audience to cast live. Fans for eSports and Star Craft 2 really want to see this guy on a big stage!
First of, i loved IPL3 and i will for sure tune in for IPL4 again on IGN Prime, although i have one minor complain about the service. Namely, I didn't know it's an auto-recurring payment. Luckyily i've red about it on these forums actually about a week after IPL3 else i would not have known at all, and even then it was quite hard to actually navigate to cancelling it.
Either way i'm stoked for IPL4, great line-up already. Cant wait !

Look at allegiant (if they service an airport near you) if you haven't.
United was 750, allegiant was ~200
I know that driving would probably cost 200 in gas alone for round trip.. especially when gas starts to climb more.
~840 miles, ~25 gallons with my car's ~34 mpg highway. 4 dollars per gallon.. that's 100 right there.
That's a 12 hour drive though =\ I can barely put up with the 8 hour drive between school and home.
Hrm...I could totally drive down on that thursday if work lets me have the day off...but they are very strict about using a vacation day before a holiday so that probably would not happen. My friend might do the drive with me but we both celebrate Easter so I don't know if that will fly
mcDuffs is probably the most enthusiastic caster i've ever seen on a stream, a more dedicated caster is quite hard to find imo. +1 for him casting IPL4.
Man this looks like it is going to be awesome. So many great players signed up already. Wishing the best for you IPL folks, I feel like with MLG asking $20 bucks to watch their tournaments IPL might explode viewer wise.
Having it scheduled on Easter Sunday is causing some issues going. I've bought tickets, but have to cancel a choir performance and a family get together to go.

Hey guys. It would be great if IPL4 in Las Vegas would have as casters the IMBAtv Crew like mcDuffs, Filesilver, Forester, Addicted and so on. The atmosphere would be a relax and entertaining one while having quality SC2 matches.
So, would be a great addition and not only if we would have more casters like the IMBAtv at various eveniments the atmosphere of the match depends on it (from a spectator point of view obviously).
Take care and hopefully someone would count my advice and proposal.

We are not going behind a PPV paywall. Details about streams to come next week.
We will be hiring mainly our superstars at IPL 3 (don't panic if you haven't gotten an email or skype call yet, IPL 3 staff!), but there may be room for potential new blood. Will update as I figure that out.
Ah crap, same weekend as PaxEast. ed Day9 was at last PaxEast and MLGSundance has tweeted "at least I'll see you in Boston" to him, so I've been assuming he'll be back. That may be why he isn't scheduled (at least yet) to cast. Although IIRC he hasn't cast IPL before either, right?

We are working on improving this currently, more details about streams to be released next week.
Just wondering about a detail in the format. I'm glad to see the finals are Bo7, as it is really anticlimatic for a major tournament to end with a Bo3 (WCG, MLG, etc). However, since it is double elimination, what is the reward for the player who made it to the finals without losing once, as opposed to the player that did already lose a set? A 1 game advantage in the finals?

If the lower bracket champion beats the upper bracket champion in a Bo7, we play an entire new Bo7. True double elimination tournament.

I'm fairly certain with double elimination, the loser has to win 2 best of 7's to win the final.
Although it is IGN's tourny and they can do whatever rules they want.

This is correct, however it will likely end up being two Bo5s instead of two Bo7s, it's not realistic or fair to expect players to be able to play two Bo7s in a row.

Pvp is broken on Tal Darim (at a professional level obv). For that sole reason it should be removed.
Shakura's small choke in the middle favors terran too much in tvz. There is also only one attack path (by ground).
I hate how they set up the prize pool. From 16k to 40k from 1st to 2nd? Are you kidding me? I think a more balanced and spread out prize-pool that still rewards those who do well but don't get 1st place is much better. Please IGN restructure your prize pool before the event

Too top heavy is not good though.
2nd place is going to be really damn impressive at this event, 40k to 16k is too steep a drop in my opinion.

It has always been my goal to reward people for both their time in coming to our events as well as for succeeding. I believe this prize structure does that as well as creates a large incentive for placing 1st.
I can't wait! I'll definitely be watching, considering it's free and it sounds really awesome! It looks like there will be some really great players and casters attending as well.

I agree, but if I'm a player who plays through group play, and then through the bracket slaying other players, and then get a crap matchup like zvz and there's 24K on the line? Thats a bit absurd. Sure, the winner should be rewarded, but that type of money is really heavy. I think in a smaller tournament that type of percentage would work, but for a weekend long event it seems pretty nuts.

You can always work a deal with the other player at that point. Like they often do in poker. Say you each take 25k and play for the remaining 6k.

I know you're not trolling, but you should know that most people would consider that to be "match fixing." At best that's disingenous, at worst it's out right cheating.

Signed up! I'm happy it's in Vegas, as I was bummed IPL3 was at Vegas-lite.

Pretty sure they have an agreement with Harrah's, so my money is on that.
Can't believe I just heard about this. Born and raised in Vegas! I have a couple questions about VIP pass for $175
"access to exclusive VIP areas and other VIP-only perks."
Can you elaborate? What do you mean VIP areas? Hanging out with players, food, what exactly is a VIP area at this event? What is VIP only perks?
I'll probably buy anyway to show my support for all IPL has been doing but description is rather nebulous.
My advice is look into city center. Aria or Cosmo for classy places and they need business (best value). For young people and hot women check into rates at the palms or PH.

I hope the unconfirmed invite is FXOLucky, it seems a bit unfair for him not to get an invite considering his runner up at IPL3 is more impressive than IdrA and WhiteRa's wins of IPL1 and 2, and considering that MC and MMA have been invited presumably based on their popularity and success outside of IPL affiliated events.
Anyway I'm super pumped for this event, but I wonder whether choosing to host the event is Las Vegas will bring with it the same crowd problems they had in Atlantic City. They'll probably get more walk ins then IPL3, but I wonder whether it would be better to just host the event in Cali or NY, where I'd guess there is the most densely populated SC scene in the US.
I would have liked to see less players determined by seeds and invites with so many players competing in the bracket. Other then that I think you should reconsider the inclusion of 'calm before the storm' in the map-pool, unless you enjoy watching zergs going for hopeless all-ins. TLPD can hopefully sway you.
Is there a link to a schedule somewhere? Trying to plan flights, and I don't know how long I should stick around Sunday.
It's not much more than a month away, and no venue announced yet? Is the venue going to be announced soon? Trying to decide if I'm going to have my wife make the trip too (since she wont be watching any SC2 ), but it really depends where on the strip the hotel will be. We tend to stay south strip, and if the venue is way the hell north, then I probably wont bring her along, and we'll make a trip out during March Madness also or something.
Interesting idea but don't think it will work. I dont why someone would go to Vegas to watch SC2. I love watching SC2 in person but there are so many better ways to spend your time in this city.

Sorry, we don't have any complimentary ticket system worked out. The best I can tell you is to use the Facebook promotion to receive 50% off of your tickets, making them only $12.50 per person for an entire weekend of SC2, LoL, and the GSTL finals! http://www.facebook.com/IGNProLeague?sk=app_211922635540356
Hey guys, hope this question hasn't been answered already, but there's like 20 pages here to look though: Is there specific times set for what's going on each of the days that weekend? I'm organizing a barcraft and would look to be able to give the owners an accurate time for when people will be showing up.
