It is my honor to bring you one of the best news we had this year. In 2011, a lot of players made a name for themselves in the GSL and GSTL. These now star players were able to deliver excellent performances in tournaments all over the world and showcase their outstanding skills and understanding of the game.
Do you remember the 2011 GSL October Finals at Blizzcon? It was our first attempt at a GSL Grand Final overseas and turned out to be a great success, receiving an overwhelmingly good response from our international fans.
At GOMTV we do our best to globalize StarCraft II and e-Sports and always try to find new ways to provide teams and players with new opportunities and a stable environment.
This year we changed the formats of the GSL and GSTL to provide a system that would always ensure the best performances of every team and player. What I will announce today is yet another way of inspiring the players to show us the best they got.
As you might remember, earlier this year I mentioned in an interview that I will have very exciting news regarding GSTL. The 2012 GSTL Season 1 is currently in the Round of 8 Pennant Race stage. As of now we can’t be sure which teams will advance to the playoffs and finals. It is exciting to watch and cheer for the teams that are currently doing their absolute best to advance further in the tournament. And now, the teams will have yet another incentive to try their hardest in the GSTL.
The 2012 GSTL Season 1 Finals will be held in Las Vegas, USA, together with IPL 4.
Las Vegas, the stage of dreams for every sports event in the world, will be visited by our two finalist teams of the GSTL. Furthermore, the StarCraft II part of IPL 4 will be produced by GOMTV together with IPL, with the final day of the event (Sunday April 8th) being additionally broadcasted with Korean commentary for the Korean audience.
GOMTV is looking forward to a long-term cooperation with North America’s premier league, IPL, in 2012 and beyond. Last year in September I attended IPL 3 and talked a lot with IPL’s General Manager David Ting. I was very impressed with IPL’s perspective on e-Sports and their highly skilled and passionate staff and felt that GOMTV and IPL share a common goal and vision.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank David Ting who put in a lot of time and effort into making this cooperation happen.
Hosting the GSTL Finals in Las Vegas will be a big challenge for GOMTV. Our experienced and trusty GSL production crew will fly over to Las Vegas to ensure highest quality entertainment and will work hard to help provide the best tournament experience possible.
We would like to ask to ask all fans of GSL and GSTL to cheer for GOMTV and IPL and hope everyone will enjoy the show!
In order to make the GSTL Finals in Las Vegas possible the GSL and GSTL schedule has been adjusted as follows:
As you know IPL 4 is using twitch and we are using GOM Player, also IPL 4 has a $5 deal for HD streams and GSTL has its own ticket system, how all of this going to be worked out is currently under discussion.
lol winning team, probably will get to spend night with best hookers, get best drugs, and play $1000 for a casino... its LasVegas after all people, sin city... Great news :D

There is no age limit for this IPL, Vegas is different from Atlantic City.

it was a big deal for ipl4 to have no restrictions, so under 18 is allowed at the venue they're hosting it at
Thanks! Really Happy about that, has anything been said about all these players competing in IPL4 through the open bracket?, because if they do that will be a seriously stacked tournament!
Very nice! IPL 4 is going to be epic! However, now I wonder if any players qualified for mlg columbus will risk going there if their team makes it far enough in gstl since important gstl games are played during columbus weekend. Mainly, I want MKP to go to columbus, but if prime makes it far enough will he risk going to columbus when prime will have to play an elimination gstl game that weekend.
Holy....wow, I am super excited for this. I'm really glad that the GSL is continuing to work with foreign tournaments. I really feel like this is what is needed to bring in those first time international viewers that the seeding is intended for. I can only see this working out well for everyone involved. Congratulations.
IPL man. You guys take it a notch up every goddamn time. I was wondering, gee, how is IPL4 gonna show up MLG this time? Boy, you guys sure showed them up alright!
If this goes well, and I don't see it not doing so, I think we may have a realistic chance on getting something televised like on ESPN in the future. Possibly even this year.
Awesome news, this will make the IPL4 event just that much better. And by that much I mean a whole lot. Great move by both organizations, I hope the GSL keeps trying to maintain an international presence going forward.
Wow, this is fucking amazing news. I'm really excited about IPL and GOMTV cooperating. I hope the concurrent showing of Sunday games will draw more of the Korean fans to the international scene.
So jealous of anyone who gets to attend this live! Last IPL was amazing, GSTL finals are consistently great, and this event is going to be one for the ages.
I just realized this is the same weekend as the Masters I know this won't effect very many E-sports fans, but it will probably mean I won't watch very much IPL/GSTL that weekend. Ahhhh. Hard being a sports/esports fan D:
ahahaha amazing. This means that all the players from the 2 finalist teams will be competing in the open bracket of IPL4? I would love to see that. Then theres no foreign hope anymore
The best news about this is 2 full korean teams playing in the open bracket! OMG!!! Seriously I can't wait for this! However, I'm having a hard time deciding on what two teams I want to make it cause I like them all and players from all different teams.
This is cool but why Las Vegas? It's actually the middle of nowhere! But, I'm sure this gstl finals will pull in more people from outside the city/state.

For europeans (or me at least) Las Vegas is really special, i guess everyone here at some point in his life daydreamed about roadtripping over there, with a old cabriolet
I like the decision, theres no bigger game than in Las Vegas.
How far i advance will the teams be flown out though? It would be a real shame to have the level of play be anything lower then the best they can possibly bring, simply due to some of the players less used to flying around being jetlagged.

Because there is 40 million people straightline 2-4hr hwy drive away who come here all the time. Everyone fly cheap to vegas and awesome rooms are cheap too. Why is all those conventions and fights in Vegas? Because it rules!
the StarCraft II part of IPL 4 will be produced by GOMTV together with IPL
This just gave the potential for IPL 4 to be the best tournament ever!!! IPL is know for its excellent production quality more than anything. Sure there is great talent showcased at IPL ALWAYS, but its production is also there. Now with GOM helping run the show, IPL will undoubtedly be the most bad ass tournament to date!!
Epic...I will watch on HD pass...great news and ty I think you can see from this thread that we appeciate the enormous efforts to organise this partnership and bring it to fruition in LV. Hope it lasts a long time.
Watching the GSTL finals live w/ Mr. Chae was one of the coolest things I've had the pleasure to be a part of, I'm so glad that IPL 4 will be bringing the GSTL to the US for a major event.
On February 29 2012 12:24 UncleTomNZ wrote: So does this mean that all the members of the GSTL teams will be able to compete in the lan qualifiers at the event?
And this makes IPL4 even more awesome b/c that means we get 2 stacked as shit Korean teams going through the open bracket. Also, consider this, there's the IPL TAC guys being flown in and stacking IPL4 even more. haha, this is awesome though we might have 2 teams playing 2 finals.
Holy crap, I never would have imagined it would be possible for an organization willing enough to fly over two whole teams overseas, this is a whole different level for E-sports!
Vegas is the perfect locations for this, cheap accommodations, good food, good entertainment, hookers and you can fly direct from pretty much any major city in North America. I'd estimate flight, hotel, food etc for the weekend(not including tickets to the event or hookers) would be around $600.00. Sign me up.

Was wondering about this myself. It's unfortunate but I guess inevitable to be getting vibes from IGN that it doesn't believe there's room for more than one major tournament organizer in NA.
To those commenting about IPL vs MLG--IPL is providing regular small and large tournament opportunities to the Korean scene that MLG isn't. It's hard for GomTV to not side with IPL.

Technically any Liquid player can play in the GSTL, so if oGsTL does make it to the finals the Liquid roster will likely be deployed.

To be fair, a lot of organizations say things like this even if there is stiff competition. I'm pretty sure EG calls themselves the premier North American E-sports organization, for example. It's a little presumptuous but I guess that's what you expect, haha
This sounds awesome by the way! I live on the East Coast, but I'll definitely be watching

Of course the whole roster will be there in the oGs aisle as honored guests (GSTL wise), but I don't think oGs would trust players that aren't playing in Korea (Jinro, Zenio, HerO, HayprO) now.
I can see Ret, MAYBE Sheth playing as special forces in a million to one unexpected scenario.

Sheth's been a pretty monstrous manner bear in teamleagues lately; I wonder if oGs is keeping tabs on his success.

Sheth wouldn't be allowed to play for oGs-TL if he wasn't on the roster sheet of the team at the start of the season. Since he wasn't in Korea, I would guess he wouldn't be allowed to play even if they needed him. I'm sure if oGs makes the finals, Hero and Zenio will be used.

Well hopefully oGs did put the whole TL roster on their GSTL lineup. If there isn't a limit on how many players you can register for GSTL (unlike, say, UEFA Champions League where you have a limited roster) there would have been no reason not to. Just to keep all of us hoping :D

Oh lawdy, nice! Glad to hear GOM and IPL are working together, should definitely make for some sick production. I have even more reason to tune into IPL now!
I hope having GOMTV help you in production in IPL as well means we can have a dedicated observer now, so we do not need to see health bars turned on all the time.
This pet peeve of mine is the determining factor for whether or not I buy the HD pass. No point in going HD when all the beauty of the game is masked by colored bars.
Shit I will have to take my Monday this time, at ipl 3 I couldn't stop watching stephano's run, the final started at something like 3 am,went to sleep at 5:30 am, woke up at 7 am to go to work >_<, luckily (^^) he won and made it worth it.
So lucky, i enjoyed every minute when i was in Vegas in 2011, and im pretty darn sure that this GSTL finals is going to be off the hook! So excited, hope there is a huge crowd and lots of people go! I would if it wasnt a 12hour flight from where i live T.T
With the two teams worth of players entering the main tournament it looks like Idra, White Ra and Stephano will be the only foreigners in the final group stage in this foreigner tournament then.
Nothing against koreans of course and I do want to see high level play, it's just I watch GSL to see the best koreans play, I don't really want all the big tournaments to become the same thing.
Player passes are capped at 128, and there are less than 100 passes remaining! ACT QUICKLY, THESE WILL SELL OUT! And again, this is an all ages event!
what does that mean? you only sell 128 tickets? you fly your whole studio and 2 teams, casters and technicians to L.V. and only sell 128 tickets. .. guess you guys are either trolling or you have too much money. cannot like that decision.
Awesome, gonna make IPL even more awesome. Also dat schedule, love the fact that it takes till end of march for code s to start again, will give everyone a great chance to practice hard and for mvp to hopefully recover well.

Or their schedule makes it so they can't finish a larger open bracket in time for the rest of the event to go as planned. There's plenty of reasons for a 128 open bracket instead of a 256 or bigger one.

If the solution to that problem is creating week-long periods of dead air inside the season, well, you should be happy!

jep that's the solution - or they should fix their code a schedule with 8 BO3s on one day - apart from that it's great that they don't have EVERY week matches. Makes a single GSL finals much more interesting

Yea I thought that too. But then the post after it were like "there isn't enough time to do 256 player pool". So i'm like double what, and I wanted to be sure we were all on the same page.
I was thinking about something--how will the GSTL finals in the U.S. affect Korean teams that have partnerships with foreign teams? Specifically, is it possible to see more participation by non-Korean members? Are non-Korean members actually considered eligible members of the team?
I know that Liquid players have played for oGs-TL in the GSTL and in the future Nada will play games for coL.MVP, and I assume that other new Korean members of Complexity will also be eligible to play for MVP. In fact, coL's new members will give MVP a lot of depth at Terran next year.
So here's what I assume: If oGs-TL were to qualify, for example, HerO and Zenio would be considered a part of the official oGs-TL GSTL team and their travel would be accommodated for by IPL in the same way as the oGs players. Now, ordinarily, most of the other Liquid members don't live in Korea and therefore wouldn't be around to participate in the GSTL. Are they considered a part of the GSTL team? If they were to come to Korea, could they play for oGs-TL? And finally, it seems as if technically IPL has obligated themselves to fly out the entire roster of two teams for the GSTL, although in practice it would seem really unfair to expect that, especially considering that foreign players don't usually contribute to the GSTL season.
I really don't know how this works, and I'm not sure how to check. I don't think that there's an official rule on it from GOM. Plus it seems that each team's specific partnership is different. For example, I've never seen an EG player play for Slayers even though, as I mentioned, we've seen that happen for oGs-TL and coL.MVP. And that's the case even though HuK had been a mainstay in Code S for quite a while and now Puma + JYP play for EG (imo Slayers is somewhat weak at Protoss and certainly HuK + JYP would be a nice addition).

The teams had to put out a roster of who is on the team for the GSTL. I don't know if Jinro got placed on the oGs-TL roster, but I would beat the farm that Ret and others would not have been put on the roster.

I think the best idea is to stream the games through both gom player and twitch, allowing both people with gstl tickets and people with ipl ticket to watch the finals. If that means that people with gstll tickets should get some sort of discount off the ipl ticket, maybe, maybe not. I can't really blame gsl too much because MLG sided with naniwa during the probe rush fiasco. They chose to side with a player that called MLG a joke tourney on stage. I can see why GSL would be upset by that and how it would fracture their relationship.
However, I still think it was wrong of GSL not to reschedule the code A matches. Don't punish the players because you're upset with MLG. That was the wrong way to go about it.

If shit like that would decide business it would be pretty sad. Stop the drama.
Oh wow, I'm -so- glad I haven't booked my plane tickets. Was planning to have a 2-nights stopover in Seoul for the GSTL semifinals. I guess now I can just drive to Vegas instead.

Nope. Competitor's badge functions like a General Admission badge with additional benefits of access to areas like practice rooms, etc.
Any idea how this is being broadcast? Will it be part of GSTL and require a season ticket for at least watchable quality or will it be part of IPL's HD subscription?
If I wasn't excited enough about IPL being in Vegas...GSTL Finals, too!!!?!?! I'm a Vegas virgin, so this is a better time than ever to go. Can't wait! Time to save up. XD

I'm not sure what you mean here. If you're spectating in person at the live event, your IPL spectator pass allows you to see everything, including the GSTL finals. If you're going to watch online, you will either need to have a GSTL online pass or IPL Twitch subscription to watch in HD, but if you watch live you can watch in 480p on our stream for free. =)

What are you talking about? MLG did not "side" with NaNiwa. If anything, they sided with GOM, which is why some people who were angry at GOM were also angry at MLG. Some people even suggested that MLG was covering for GOM because they were in business together(at the time). So there is no reason to think that GOM is upset with MLG.
Now, to the second point regarding Code A matches and MLG. Although we don't know that GOM did in fact refused to reschedule, they had good reasons to do so once schedules were announced. It should've been dealt with beforehand. Bear in mind that Code A Ro24 matches were scheduled to be held on Feb 28~Mar 1, although exactly who would be playing could not be known in advance. (you don't know who will be playing who on Ro24 unless Ro32 is done)

Excellent, haven't downloaded GOM player and now I can put it off even longer.

You've never watched a GSL match live?
I live in the USA, eastern time. GSL matches usually start at 1am for me. As much as I would love to, I can't simply pull all nighters, especially during weekdays. I do try to watch VODs however, whenever I have the time.
I have watched a few GSL matches live, such as the October GSL finals at Blizzcon, or sometimes I watch off a friend's computer. But not consistently, unfortunately.
