Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources. In short, be smart. There has to be always one drama thread active to keep people occupied. This thread will stay on top until the next one pops up. People love drama and I will admit that I keep finding myself checking these threads as well.

Walk into your job and start swearing/using racial slurs, see how long you are employed. Especially in a position where you will be representing your entire company. Good luck keeping your job.
So Orb started screaming 'nigger' while he was casting now? If my employer found out I called someone a nigger (outside of work) I wouldn't get fired.

Especially if you said it one year ago.
Idra does pretty much the same shit on live casted games with a far larger audience. He gets a free pass for the most part (a stern talking to at worst). Orb gets sacked from his dream job because of a bunch of Reddit vengance nerds out with pitchforks with the sole intention of fucking over anyone that they don't like.
I felt at worse Orb maybe deserved some sort of suspension temporarily. I don't think he should have been fired, but Alex's hand was forced by Redditers because they feel that they are entitled to what they feel should happen. And it's a load of bullshit that anyone would ever endorse that kind of reaction from any community. It only shows how immature the Starcraft community really is, that they would go to the extent of screwing someone over without even thinking about what they are doing.

I herd rumors about a replay pack that "exposes" other players for using racial slander.
Might be pretty scary if it is released. Wonder if the reactions will be the same because some of these players are more "Liked" than Orb.

No offense, but your letter is completely obnoxious. I understand you hold yourselves to a high standard, but this is a video game. This is a video game that TEENAGERS like to watch on streams. I'm really trying not to sound insulting, because I don't want too. You guys are great for e-sports, but the level of seriousness that you hold to yourselves is borderline pathetic. I don't know how someone gets so uptight and dismisses someone when they get all butt-hurt over one word. SERIOUS BUSINESS, huh? Thanks for getting rid of a great caster over your mormon-like values.

After watching some of Orb's stream, I don't feel so bad about the situation.

brb e-mailing EG sponsors that idra said 'faggot' 1 year ago

Racism will forever exist when people get offended by words.

Racism was (and is in some places of the world) far more than words. While it may be unrealistic to dig up a battle each time a racial term is uttered, anger against it is a good thing, not a bad thing. Would be a shame to move backwards if we forget what ugliness can come of the words.
I agree the whole situation was blown out of proportion, but if orb wanted to be a public figure... he really should have gotten a handle on this stuff. I realize it all happened in the past, but he didn't rise to fame overnight either.

Honestly this needs to happen so that teams like EG are forced to confront their hypocrisy.
Cuz let's face it, Idra gets a free pass when he calls people faggots but Orb gets instantly dropped for saying Nigger, to me I find both words equally offensive and there is literally no difference between Orb and Idra BMing. EG will use any half-baked excuse they can to avoid causing problems for their cash-cow Idra and will disown someone like Orb with no reservation because he doesn't make them as much money, simple as that, EG has no moral or ethical concerns on this issue it's purely about money money money. [Go figure their team as a whole existsmore as a product placement marketing team than a SC2 team].
Oh well, this just annoys me because it's blatent favortism which I can't stand, get yourself a real set of ethical rules to abide by instead of just sticking your dick wherever the money is. I've lost any respect I've had for EG by this point.

That is the main issue Alex had with the scenario and I don't think people realize it. Orb said some naughty words when he got angry, people on reddit dug it up to get him in trouble, and he proceeded to lie about it and say it wasn't him. That is the issue that caused him getting dropped. I really doubt EG would have kicked him for saying that shit over a year ago, especially if he fessed up and apologized instead of attempting to brush it under the rug.

Is there actually any evidence that Orb lied? According to his appology it still wasn't him in the first screenshot and he admitted to the other accusations. Also, I have never heard anyone say Orb is being punished for lying and everything I have heard from EG is that he's simply being punished for specifically using the word Nigger. [does this mean that if he had said "faggot" instead he would have only gotten a slap on the wrist like Idra? lol doubt it, they'd find some other excuse I bet.]
|
If it was about being brushed under the rug wouldn't have Alex said that? Instead the stance is say bad stuff = get kicked from EG forever.
Don't invent new elements when they were never emphasized, or even mentioned.

Wow I'm pretty impressed by that post
|
The only thing that impresses me about EG these days is that they still try to justify their extremely contradictory actions and statements. I guess that's what happens when you have a blind fanbase.
|
I applaud Alex for the long explanation and for fighting the good fight. I believe he's right that prejudice -- whether or not it qualifies to be called "racism" in the traditional sense -- persists even when people say it doesn't. However, I personally feel that the actions taken are slightly excessive because they are punishment for ancient history.
Now, if Orb's comments had been made while he was at EG (whether or not he was playing at the time) then I would say that would be absolutely grounds for immediate termination, but as it is firing him over something that happened in a non-public setting before he was hired is excessive.
I don't think people should be made to answer to everything they've ever said and done within the span of their lifetimes.
Orb was doing a good job casting recently and I hope he finds a new position; it's too bad because he and Incontrol had quite good chemistry.

1) Orb was dropped for his poor behavior, not for lying. He owned up to the other screenshots and stated on multiple times that the first screenshot was not him, but the other ones were.
2) EG kicked him out for shit over a year ago because people were pressuring their sponsors because Reddit is full of angry crusading vengeful nerds that want to witch hunt because they feel entitled to, and no one at Reddit or TL decided to attempt to stop them.
3) The issue at hand quickly became 2nd nature when people were just attacking Orb just because they could, digging up any dirt that they could find on him. Reddit was completely responsible for what happened and you know it. It was no longer a matter of whether or not that they could get Orb to fix his attitude, they were just simply outright attacking Orb and trying to get him fired, despite the fact that EG is incredibly hypocritical and tolerates huge amounts of BM from Idra and various other players on their team.
