Forgive my ignorance, but these are ALL the players? What happened to the 256 open bracket players like last year? Cool, they've been added to the list
Was gonna ask you to highlight the high-profile open bracket players. Then I realized you'd just be highlight 90% of the 49 players. Gonna be amazing!! Stephano, Thorzain, MorroW GOGO!

Yeah, forgive mine as well. Does this mean that there's no longer the chance of a complete unknown getting into the championship bracket?
I think the biggest sleeper in this tournament is coL goswer, I've seen him practice with demuslim on demuslim's stream and wow this kid has some crazy sick talent, hoping for Illusion too , also I've heard coLheart is one of the best terrans in korea right now so I'm excited to see how he performs
I think it's funny how MLG hosts one PPV tournament and then all the retarded people think that everything that MLG does will always be PPV. Maybe the MLG website is too hard to navigate.
Looks to be a pretty good tournament and Naniwa fighting!

What? No. This is just for Columbus. There will be another set of arenas after Columbus to determine the list for the next event.

I don't think that I am retarded, but I did assume that they would try PPV again this time to try to reproduce their results or improve on them. I don't see any problem with it. It isn't like there was a giant announcement on the MLG homepage. I did find it after some searching though.

they said the MLG pro circuit events would stay free to view pretty much forever, it is just the additional events that they are going to play around with the PPV model.
holy, crap that is the most stacked open bracket ever fuck
you cant help but think that alot of the players that dont make it into the top 16, or at least close, might just not come to anymore, especially europeans and koreans who have to coome all this way
i havent read much about this years MLG. Does it work the same as last year with top 16 and pool play and stuff? and is it just as hard for people to drop out of the top 16 if it is the same?
On March 21 2012 08:26 JackDT wrote: How do the open bracket seeds work? How many rounds does Sheth get to skip, or the 49th player?
Really good quistion how does this actually work?
For Winter Arena they said -- top 16 in pool play, bottom 16 seeded into last Open winner's round. Since not all 32 players are coming, my guess is they will take the top 16 in that open list and make them the OWR5 seeds. But maybe they will just leave some of those OWR5 seeds empty? Don't know.
Yes definitely a Kiwikaki smurf. And if I'm not wrong just before Reign disbanded he participated in almost all the team games for the various team tournaments that have been around. He even did quite well.
On March 21 2012 08:26 JackDT wrote: How do the open bracket seeds work? How many rounds does Sheth get to skip, or the 49th player?
Top 16 from Winter Arena are in pool play, 17-32 (or top 16 of open bracket now) are seeded into open bracket round 5, everyone else starts at round 1, and the seeding determines the brackets, so higher seeds don't run into each other early, as far as I understand.

That would have been my question as well. The only unknown player that is highlighted for some reason.
Lobber is this reditor who quit his job for a year(?) to play starcraft he got into grandmaster from some low league, still not why hes highlighted though.

According to TLPD, he is a Protoss player who won the silver medal in the US CraftCup #28, losing only to "owmygroin".
Honestly it is amazing how deep the tournament gets each time. There are like 75+ Grandmaster or better level players at MLG Columbus now. To think that literally 1/3rd of the tournament are GM level is pretty sick.
So many scary players this MLG! Missing a few big names (Mvp, MMA, etc), but still, might have the most top-tier talent in one tournament seen in a while. Can't wait for this weekend!

Lobber is terrible at SC2 (60 APM and cheeses all the time), very bad mannered, and barely made GM on the NA server; he is not a notable player
Two big names I see missing are Zenio and Hero. Also no Dignitas and very few from Fnatic and Complexity. I guess these Koreans going to foreign teams AREN'T getting their wishes granted. I would expect the north american teams to field their full roster at both MLG and at least consider IPL. I feel IPL will be a much more daunting task seeing so many koreans seeded. At this event only 8 koreans will be in pools plus any that survive open bracket. I'm not sure the # of players that qualified high for this event dropped out but I think MLG got exactly what it wanted out of the arena event and could care less about these players dropping out. Hopefully they gave enough notice to allow MLG the opportunity to fly the next best players in. B-) As for the event itself I am expecting better production than the Arena event. I know there will be many breaks for ads. Please consider doing off stage interviews/ something more lengthy and in depth. I am completely bored of these short pre/post match interviews that always seem to ask the same silly questions all weekend long. How do you think/expect it will go? Are you confident? What do you think/expect the score will be? Will you ceremony? What happened in those games? Who do you want to play next? How do you like USA? How do you like MLG?
If you've got casters sitting on the sidelines PUT THEM TO WORK!!! Throw them into the crowd to get interviews or send them into the player pit and give the stream updates. Get them to do player interviews SOMETHING!!!! The last thing I wanna see is you pay top dollar to fly in these excellent casters and just watch them be underutilized. Especially on Sunday when there will be a limited amount of games and TONS of downtime. Please, MLG blow me away this weekend. If you do I will gladly pay PPV or your HD broadcasts.
On March 21 2012 07:25 mememolly wrote: have you got to pay for this one?
Only if you are attending in person. Otherwise you'll get free LQ streams of each and every genre all weekend long. MK9, SCV, KOFXIII SC2 Halo
Actual games with Rob P. Simpson, Tastosis, Day9 and djWHEAT! I think all of the other casters will be on beta streams that can only be accessed through PPV. Hopefully they will be bringing along the Streamworks Satellite trucks!!!
On March 21 2012 11:44 LuckyFool wrote: if lobber is bold might as well bold more than half the list.
That's what I was thinking. If we're going off just fame(or in Lobbers case, infamous) then Julia, Ryze, daisuki, Flo, Pyre, kifire, kiwiLight, and Sync are just a few people that I'd rather hear about.

Why did SlayerS all of a sudden boycott MLG?!?!?!? Watch all of them show up to IPL.
to the post you quoted, Ganzi is going. but he is no longer in SlayerS.
The reason the SlayerS players aren't going is because they didn't qualify for a free trip. Nestea isn't going due to injury. MVP probably is resting his wrists. Bomber didn't qualify for a free trip, nor did most of the other big names that aren't going. This shouldn't surprise anyone as Korean teams don't have money to be sending players to foreign events.

I never said he was. Just wondered about SlayerS. Guess this is what we get since GSL and MLG had a divorce!

Thing with him is that he's extremely solid, he never loses to inferior players pretty much. So I think he'll smooth himself through open bracket and from there he can go all the way if he has a couple of good days.
On March 22 2012 05:13 HaXXspetten wrote: Time to put Stephano to the test once and for all
He already went to Korea and competed in a tourney there, remember? Arena of Legends was it? Didn't make it out of his group.
Was your comment meant to dismiss Stephano because he didn't make it out of his group in a single tournament (where he beat DRG and Hero and was unlucky not to advance)? He just beat polt 5-2 at LSC and yesterday trounced JYP 4-0 in practice games. He beat zenio 2-0 at the online NASL online qualifiers a couple weeks ago, etc. I'm pretty sure he can hang with the Koreans.

Nah dude, you're reading too far into it. It's the implication that he hasn't been tested. He's been to hang with the koreans. And shortly before he beat Polt, he lots to Polt at Assembly.
I guess it's directed at the guy that "corrected" my post as well. Not dismissing him at all, if anything I like him a little bit more lately.
But the idea of him having not been "tested" is plain silly. He's proven what he's capable of, both his upper and lower limits, you could argue.

Mediocre? This is a best lineup outside of GSL since MLG Providence. The only people that are really missing are Leenock and Nestea because of issues, and MVP and MMA because they didn't qualify for winter arena/place top 16 at winter arena.
I want to see an MKP - Stephano final with Polt in third, Huk in 4th.
Also, gogo Ailuj. Get back to that main stage! I love seeing Tastosis trying not to concentrate on "A Girl!!" but instead on the game, and failing miserably. (For that matter, isn't Flo in the open brackets?)

forgetting about DRG? To be honest, I can't imagine a final without DongRaeGu. I think Marineking vs DRG is very reasonable.
Even if there are some big names in Open Round 1, being placed 4 rounds ahead as a seed makes it hugely more likely to be placed. Choose the most consistent ones from OWR5 as priority and from OWR1 you have to be sure they're going to blitz the first four rounds (Alive is the only one I'm confident about)
Other things people are forgetting about is how good Oz is at PvP in a group with two other Protosses, and how even DRG just, like, won a GSL and is still the team league (no-preparation-time games like MLG) master.

Ok, sorry. Mediocre was a bit too strong. I just mean that it's a shame that a lot of good players are missing and that the lineup is worse than Providence, GSL (obviously) and most probably IPL too.
At least MLG understands how it should be, publishing a detailed schedule 24 hours before the start of the tournament! tyty! Makes planning the weekend much easier.
Put in some work to make the list more complete with TLPD links, races, teams, and country flags (registered MLG ID in parentheses). Feel free to put it into the op.
For those wondering why HerO and Zenio aren't attending: Their Code S games are really close and they rather want to focus on that. Nazgul posted the following in HerO's fanclub when the topic came up:

Just gotta say something about my name on the list....
My tag is H2O not PMS... Female members of PMS|H2O have the PMS tag, the Male Members have H2O. As my team is technically H2O not PMS. As PMS is a female only clan, and clearly that I am not. LOL.

I'm pretty sure they rank by "mlg points" so only based on performances that are run by mlg. none of the other tournaments matter
Yeah, everyone not tied at the 50th seed has accrued seeding points in the MLG qualifiers and/or the Winter Arena previously. The top 16 finishers of the Winter Arena are placed directly into pool play (cancellations notwithstanding). The bottom 16 finishers of the Winter Arena (cancellations also notwithstanding) equaling the top 16 of the open bracket of the Winter Championship will be placed in winner's round 5 (i.e. need to win fewer matches to reach pool play).

Well, I went with what TLPD provided, so I didn't know you had this tagging policy. I changed it in my posts but I cannot edit the op. You may wanna contact a mod about it.

Guys like MVP and Nestea could easily pay for the flight themselves if they were confident about getting far. But I guess it's quite a big risk considering they would have to deal with jet lag etc.

Nestea wanted to come, got in a minor accident on his motorcylcle/scooter and is taking a couple weeks to recover.
