More signs that point to HotS Beta closely after this weekend:
Original Message From AGIANTSMURF: Dont know if you noticed this, but i read the rules for the arcade beta contest
It states that the contest ends June 12th and that the winners will be drawn on the 15th
It then states that winners will be notified within 5 days of drawing (15th-20/21st) and that in order to redeem the prize winners just simply follow the instructions in the email/message they recieve..
This leads me to believe that the beta will release during the week of the 17th (1 full week after MLG comes to an end)
After sadly forgetting to add "Beta" in the title and creating a misleading thread (I apologize greatly to all of you who were mislead by my simple mistake, I have corrected the error this time and put emphasis on an article that seems to have gone unnoticed. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=332865
I am actually suprised that no one is talking about this HUGE UPDATE as MLGAdam linked to this article recently published.
His own words about the article:
On April 28 2012 03:52 MLG_Adam wrote: Great article
A lot of people seem to have disregarded his post and kept wondering when the Beta will be released.
The article states that Blizzard is partnering up with MLG to make up for BlizzCon, but it also provides us with, as I said, a HUGE UPDATE on the release of the Beta for HotS.
The company has tweaked the balance for “Heart of the Swarm” quite a bit ahead of a beta of the game expected to release in the weeks after the event.
Now, usually I would not pay attention to articles from a somewhat unknown website (at least to me), but this time it is extremely special and I want to say reliable information as it was provided directly by MLG's own Adam.
To also back this up, for those of you who still want more, a quick search revealed that GameSpy, a well known website, powered by IGN, belives that
it's a safe bet we'll be able to start playing the StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm beta in late June.
P.S. I would not be surprised if MLG Anaheim attendees were guaranteed a beta key. Blizzard gave BlizzCon attendees Beta keys for WoL, and since this partnership with MLG seems to be what Blizzard is using as "BlizzCon," it would only be normal to hand out beta keys to attendees with the known upcoming Beta.
Man I wish it was open, but this is pretty awesome. It's going to be weird, we're going to have to wait so so long for stable gameplay. Things are finally starting to become figured out, it's going to be years before we reach a stable point.

Was hoping for a major revamp of Protoss (in particular warp gates). So far HOTS is just a few extra units.
Poor form by Blizzard.
Remember Brood War? It was new campaign missions and a few units. It is supposed to be an expansion, not a whole new game...
And some key mechanic changes, same with WC3's expansion. Thing is that at least in the latter case we didn't really know about it until a week or so before the beta. Can we wait to see what the beta holds for us at the MLG event before we rush to judgment?
But I suspect the guy you're quoting was being sarcastic/cheeky because there is no way that 2 years after WoL is rushing. That's rushing about the same as a 6-pool that hits at the 12 minute mark would be rushing. >.>

I hope they surprise us with major tweaks and improvements in the game mechanics that they haven't mentioned before. New units are nice, but I think other, more subtle tweaks in general macro and micro could improve the game.
On April 28 2012 10:45 mewbert wrote: they are rushing hots too fast
I believe the same, although i think it is a good step anyway.
By the time it is released WoL will be 2 1/2 - 3 years old. That's not too fast. That's slow, even for Blizzard.
Yes, I'm blown away by people saying 2+ years is rushing it. It's not even a new game, but an expansion. Majority of the game assets are already there, so you don't need a huge dev cycle to build from the ground up.
too soon ? lol.. Too long you mean. I want to see change. Some matchups while not imbalanced, are getting a bit stale for my viewing pleasure. So i cant wait to see the new build.
Most people who say it's being rushed are just whining because specific balance change x that they really want and totally know will fix every problem ever hasn't been announced.
I'm stoked, hope they give everyone who was in WoL beta a HotS beta key :D
I don't think anyone will stay with Wings of Liberty, everyone is gonna switch over because its expansion no one stayed in Original SC they all played BW. And WoL is getting boring, everyone is gonna want to play the new units.
It feels like my birthday has taken place all week, but it was a month ago. So hyped I'll reserve my excitement until I see it in action but I'm very psyched for this! Was wondering in the back of my head if they'd announce beta after MLG but it's so good to get confirmation!
Yeah man I still remember the massive split that was caused by BW. Rushed expansion(1 year after SC1?! WTF stop the milking!) that only added 2 units per race, still used the same crappy W2 engine.
I mean its not like any of the new units changed how the game was played anyways.
ROFL some of you guys need to think before posting. There will not be a serious divide between WoL and HotS unless the expansion is a giant Bomba and expansions never had made significant changes, they EXPAND the Vainilla gameplay so don't expect "complete overhauls"
I hope they completely revamped the concept of protoss. Colossy suck so much and always force protoss in a predictable direction... i want my brood war reavers back. At least u could micro them and dont had to always A-Move and die to vikings or corruptors...
Not to mention Skytoss which absolutely sucks in SC-II. Most of the blame goes to the Carrier which cant be used in SC2 at all. Its like a taunt unit, nothing more...

To be fair, Blizzard is never really accurate with their time lines. We must also consider whether this was meant to be in blizzard time or real time.

Pffffft, Valve time has nothing on Blizzard time. The longest wait was between Half life 1 and Half life 2 and it was 1998 vs 2004.
BW vs SC2 was 1998 vs 2010
The fact that you think episode 3 is taking too long means you lack patience. Its been only 6 years since episode 2 came out.

hmm...way too fast, they still need some more time to tweak it, we still haven't seen what did they do to it yet, nor have a chance to try it,nor have a chance to say why somethings still need to be fixed. tbh i want blizzard to adapt the valve time, I rather wait long for a better quality game than to have a game that still has features missing even after release (WoL anyone?)

Are you not reading this? It'd the release of the beta. A beta comes before it is actually released so they can make changes based off feedback they get.

No they're not. Historically, WC2, SC1, WC3's expansions were released only one year after the original. Even WoW had expansion coming out each year until last year or something.

Ohh yeah! I forgot completely how Blizzard and MLG have NOT partnered up for the WCS and how Blizzard is NOT going to be showcasing HotS at Anaheim. I forgot how MLG does NOT have way more announcements, which according to Adam are NOT going to be the biggest they have ever made.
So the beta will come "weeks" after MLG Anaheim... That says exactly nothing. "Weeks" may mean a couple of weeks or 1-2 months. I guess blizzard will see the reaction to the new ridiculousness(nydus worms/bulldozers and SS missiles) that they will add in the game and then decide if it's time for beta testing.
if i don't get a hots beta early i will seriously be pissed. no starcraft beta until very late, no diablo beta, no wow beta (although i didn't want but was subscribed for it)

I never implied that Heart of the Swarm wasn't going to be showed off at Anaheim. I was implying that Blizzard doesn't have a good track record for releasing things when they say they will. "Weeks" could mean 2 or it could mean 10, knowing Blizzard I wouldn't get your hopes up and think it is soon rather than later.
I can't attend the event, but I would still completely pay for the ticket just for the CHANCE to get into the beta. Do you think that would be a good idea?
On April 28 2012 12:03 jWavA wrote: I can't attend the event, but I would still completely pay for the ticket just for the CHANCE to get into the beta. Do you think that would be a good idea?
I am actually just waiting for more information on the event. If they say that whoever buys a ticket will get a beta key in the mail, I will for sure buy one though I can't go! Off course, the beta keys being awarded then is just speculation based on previous occurring with WoL at BlizzCon
For the naive RTS players that do not understand how expansions work with the community. The expansion is essentially the most "up-to-date" patch of the core game, meaning that everyone will 100% be switching over to HOTS.
Not switching over would be analogous to saying, "I am not going to switch over to the patch with the ghost nerf." It doesn't work like that. The most recent version of the game is what everyone always plays, and that's how it works with every RTS game. You can basically think of HOTS as the next "patch" for WOL.

I wish HoTS would be delayed another year. SC2 is still evolving and I want to see where it goes without adding a bunch of new units and destroying the balance and the meta game.

it'd be interesting to see how the bw superstars could revitalize wol strategy. other than that, it seems to be stagnating pretty badly outside of korea.
On April 28 2012 12:23 Emporio wrote: How did additional beta keys get given out for WoL? I kinda forgot how that all went since I never got one.
they would appear in your battle.net profile and you were supposed to get an email (I know I never got an e-mail, but I checked my battle.net and there was my sc2 beta, same with D3 beta, no email not in spam either but it was in my profile).
This is going to be such an odd process.. I mean with bw the game had been out so long, but with sc2... I don' t know it just feels like it will be an awkward process. And I'm not particularly looking forward to re learning the intricacies of new units/styles. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

The only problem I have is I doubt they will scrap units once beta hits. But I am super pumped for hots as I love the new zerg units :D

its better to release the beta asap imo, so they can get immediate feedback on the new units and the subtle gameplay changes they are trying to incorporate. I just hope the keep the beta up in a lengthy time frame so that they have the time to actually make good changes and not just rush the game out.
There have been a lot of things I've had issues with as far as SC2 is concerned. I won't list them all, but the big ones are tournament support (a lot of regames and disconnects), the approach used in balancing (some of the reasoning presented for changes made, I find bonkers) and map rotation/ map community support. After the reveal of HOTS, I was really disappointed at some of the new things that appeared stupidly overpowered and others that seemed almost pointless.
I'm not a some blind bandwagon consumer. I vote with my wallet. If the beta units, the balancing in the beta, and community support doesn't take a huge leap forward, blizzard can kiss my 60$ goodbye. I hope they hit it out of the park, I hope they shut me up with quality. However, I'm not spending a dime if they continue to ignore the community, it's needs and desires, and use the silly approach to balancing they've used in the past.

going from SC vanilla to BW was very similar. A few units added, maybe some others tweaked. It's not surprising they wouldn't try to completely reinvent the wheel with this game expansion.

Well, they already have the HotS custom maps in WoL based on the Blizzcon build, so I would expect that beta UMS to not be that much of a stretch to implement assuming that the new abilities and/or mechanics aren't difficult to replicate in Galaxy Editor.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't rocketed to 100 pages by now with random hype posts. I think this is a relfection of how the community feels that it's about time this happened. So, not rushed IMO.
About time, the game needs a 2nd wind by this point. I just hope they have the beta for quite awhile and make sure the damn thing is balanced before it goes on sale. Bnet needs a huge overhaul too.

Because they only want to create a product geared towards people masters and above amirite? The amount of elitism and ignorance in this post disgusts me.

That's disgusting dude, stop treating it like sc2 is your game. It's everybodies game. I'm keen for them basing balance off of the professionals but it's people like you who generally make blizzard look the other way. I actually get better insight from alot of people diamond and below simply because they aren't socially retarded and can explain their thought processes, unlike alot of GMs who don't have good social skills. Don't get me wrong, there are some charismatic as hell GM players but quite a few of them simply don't have the social skills to give good feedback.
Blizzard will balance the game the same way they did with WoL, and yes, the game is pretty balanced.

There have been many times when there haven't been balance changes for over a few months. When was the last one in january?

Longer if you play protoss. The most recent patch only had the notable change of snipe being nerfed which mainly impacted terrans and Zerg players who went for Hive Tech.
OMG, it is time for me to update the beta specs for my computer - maybe it'll help in getting the key ^^ Thanks god it'll be in June - I'll have a lot time to play :D
Well, I really would hate it if the old guard of WoL (current pro's and semi-pro's) gets all the beta keys, while keys are handed out at random to Masters-bronze league players. It will just give the pro players the head start to maintain their dominance. Personally, I am a masters player who would love to innovate some builds and give some solid feedback in HOTS beta. I think all leagues should be able to give feedback, and blizzard would of course only take the masters league players seriously. I mean, come one most masters players don't understand the game that well, and neither do i. However we don't need gold league players spamming this/that OPOPOPOP. Lower league players can still offer a plethora of other recommendations and feedback. I'd just not prefer it be about balance, lest we get more retard easy to control a move units like collosi.
Honestly, this HotS beta should be open to preorders or just a flat out open beta. I think that all of the master/gm on all servers should get an invite or have some way to get an invite if they want it enough, i just would prefer any situation to the one where the big names get their easy keys and we never see another col.Trimaster, col.Goswser, Thorzain, Feast or any up and coming previously unknown player emerge into the pro scene. (no i dont plan on going pro, but i don't want to lose such a big advantage on ladder vs those who got to play beta longer)

In the end execution will matter.
Im more worried about beta keys being given to people who play 3 matches a season as opposed to those of us who play a few games every night.
I don't think we'll see a beta until maybe end of July/ August. Blizzard would be smart and get feedback from MLG and players on the beta, than go back and see what they can change/add to the game before they make it into a beta.

IMO If blizzard is smart they wont listen to anyone for at least a year. I remember reading lengthy post about muta being a much better option that infestor vs Terran. The main argument for muta from what I could tell was "you might miss the fungles so then your infestors will do no damage". This wasn't in beta BTW, this is 1 year ago MAX.
So IMO blizzard should be balancing from the hard data they get from battle net. Player, pro or casual feedback has proven to be basically useless over the course of WOL, and I wouldn't expect that to change any time soon.

I think Blizzard is doing a great job on balancing. They never seem to be making hasty decsisions, and they ones they make seem to be spot on.
On topic: I hope they will make a costum map in WOL with all the new units and stats. I know that the great modders in out community will also do it. But would love a map with new units from Blizz.

Agree.
In the last dev update from Dustin Browder he was talking about scrapping some of the units we've seen and that they are experimenting with new units. That doesn't sound like something ready to be showcased.
Although I can't say I don't like to get my hand on a beta key ASAP

wait, so you want beta keys to be evenly distributed, even though you say lower league players shouldn't make input on balance, and that they should listen to master league players despite they fact that most don't understand the game at all? This is the most confusing post I've ever read.
Surely balance is going to take at least a slight dive with the swap to HotS, it has to kinda, but that's more than fine with me. I mean at the same time we're going to get a lot new exciting strategies etc. evolving. And I'm personally just a little sick with the stuff that's available right now. I love WoL but I wouldn't wanna play it for years to come, I feel like some more variety would be nice.
And you know, even though there will be ups and downs, I have no doubt, that e.g. 2 years after LotV the game will be just that much better than our current WoL. People will look back and say "yeh, the transitions and so on weren't perfect but in the end, I'm damn glad about what we've ended up with."

You can't ignore the feedback of lower players, the game has to be relatively balanced at all levels. Imagine if you have a melee unit at lair tech which has really low movement but large splash damage, against masters players it would be useless, but against a bronze terran who can't stutter step, it would make marines impossible as a unit composition. You have now made tvz unwinnable for anyone who can't stutter step.
Not a very good example, but you get what i mean, the races have to be relatively equal across a range of different skill levels if the game wants a chance of succeeding.
Also, i wonder how this is going to affect the current pro scene, who is going to want to watch gsl or mlg where "old" WoL is being played while there are beta tournaments going on, and hwo many pros are going to just stop playing WoL as soon as the beta starts to try and get an advantage. The competitive scene can't switch over to the beta as it (obviously) isn't going to be balanced enough to play for $40k, but WoL tournaments will feel strange now that HoTS is out, gonna be interesting to see how its tackled.

It would be the same for every game that has a sequel released - everyone will switch when tournaments start throwing 100k prize pools for HoTS, which will probably come a year after HoTS is released for a fresh season. Sure you'll have the beta tournaments, but none will compare in prize pool to most tournaments running in WoL. It was the exact same way when BW was released.
EDIT : Honestly I think the OP is a little exaggerate... We have been down this Beta road before and it was delayed countless of times. So to say this is a "HUGE UPDATE" is over the top until we actually receive word from Blizzard it'll be released next week.

But don't you think that some companies are going to see the value of a beta tournament?
Imagine the beta came out a week ago, would you rather watch gsl, or 24 code s players playing a beta tounrment for $25k. Sponsors are generally interested in viewership numbers over game quality.
Also what happens when 85% of the sc2 pros (everyone who doesn't have a shot at winning a major tournament within the next few months) start practicing the beta in order to get a head start over everyone else. There is no reason for someone like tlo or incontrol who don't have a very high chance of placing in the big money at a WoL event, to just practice HoTS (both for stream viewership, and to get an advantage over the current top pros.)
People are going to be interested in the beta, and are going to want to see the beta and play the beta, and with all these independant large organisations running their own tournaments with large prize pools, i wouldn't be surprised to see several of them invest in beta tournaments.

Balanced at all levels? If the game is balanced at the very high end of competition it is balanced all around... Your theory is that banelings are op vs marines because lower level players can't micro...
This could be very well possible. Would be another reason why Adam kept urging people to get their tickets before they are sold out :D
Companies dont run tournaments. Tournament organizers do. Its the tournament organizer that has to show proof of evidence to a potential sponsor what the expected turnout would be for a tournament and how many people will see their logo. HoTS doesn't have the luxury of WoL when it comes to showing hard data that investors like so much. Of course there will be the occasional tournament sponsored by Razor or maybe even Twitch, but to say that everyone will jump on board the beta as soon as it starts is just downright delusional when you factor in how NO ONE will throw in a 50k+ prize pool on a beta.
When beta is released will people watch HoTS streams and such? Of course. But honestly if given the choice Im willing to bet every dime to my name that people would be much more interested in watching streams of players like Idra, DRG, DeMuslim, White-Ra and others tear it up playing WoL.

It was long enough seing TvX on Steppes Of War with 50 damage tanks and fast reapers -_-

I high level players were the only ones buying the game Blizzard would lose a gazillion dollars. It's not much about balance as it's about creating a game that's fun at all levels. If you theoretically can win at lower to mid levels by making one unit because it's just so much better at that skill level then that's a big problem even if it isn't for progamers. So it does have to have a resonable amount of "balance" at all levels to create a game where the casual have a fun experience as well, saying otherwise is just ignorant.

Isn't that the point of a beta? I don't see the need for concern over a beta, instead people should be happy that a beta is coming out so we can see the progress of development and place our input on what is benifical to the game or not. Beta is meant for testing the game, beta is the time where changes happen the most and beta is where we get our say in things heard the loudest. I cannot fathom why some people think that an early beta is detrimental to the game's development, isn't it better the earlier the beta so they have more time to change things?
HotS isn't coming until next year, at least into the competitive scene as the Blizzard World Championships are going to be played in WoL as stated before.
On April 28 2012 15:44 RedDragon571 wrote: Well, I really would hate it if the old guard of WoL (current pro's and semi-pro's) gets all the beta keys, while keys are handed out at random to Masters-bronze league players.
(no i dont plan on going pro, but i don't want to lose such a big advantage on ladder vs those who got to play beta longer)
wait, so you want beta keys to be evenly distributed, even though you say lower league players shouldn't make input on balance, and that they should listen to master league players despite they fact that most don't understand the game at all? This is the most confusing post I've ever read.
Balanced at all levels? If the game is balanced at the very high end of competition it is balanced all around... Your theory is that banelings are op vs marines because lower level players can't micro...
This could be very well possible. Would be another reason why Adam kept urging people to get their tickets before they are sold out :D
I am pretty sure it is the main reason why he is doing it

I'll take that bet. Is there an excrow where we can post up our funds?
I hope that by the time the beta is released there has been some progress regarding new Terran units. The last developer update left me somewhat disappointed because of the removal of the Shredder and the state of the Warhound (mini-thor / possibly cut).
I want new units! I don't care about a 'Ludicrous speed' button on the BC or a Reaper that regenerates HP so it can still be useless after the 4-5 minute mark but now with full hp! I want new toys to play with!
(Battle Hellion doesn't count, it was already in WoL before the Blue Flame upgrade was nerfed )

Actually, the first people to get HotS would have an advantage over the rest.

They can still be run for fun, not only that but it would be a good way to publicize any obvious flaws so that Blizzard can work on them (remember there were Sc2 Beta tournaments and it was fine, no major disasters occurred)
what is there to say? either its good or its bad, but it is coming, like why hate, why love, we cant comment on it yet. Whats for sure is: when its released, wild shit will happen. Another year of waiting wouldnt hurt, but we cant stop the rain can we? good or bad, blizzard has the ability to make me everything from ignite to setting me in a mood of utter apathy.
Well Im still not that optimistic. Weeks later could be 2,3,4 or even 12 weeks. I remember the other beta and wtf how long did it take since the "its really close" to the actual beta release so....Im not putting money in that people get to play the beta in late june/early july.
This time around I'm only going to get excited when it actually starts. I still have a feeling that, at this rate, my kids will be playing LotV at release date.......

Rushing? Their original time line was 18 months after wings of liberty which was jan 2012. They're already months behind their schedule. Doesn't seem like they're rushing anything to me.
Welllll.. we know that when Blizzard says "18 months", they usually really mean 81 months.

I would personally bet on 81 weeks. Just relax and wait till whenever they actually release it. =)
Why do I have the strangest feeling that as of late June I'm going to be going on the largest rage spree in history when I see the piece of shit that Blizzard hands to us on a silver platter?

Chances are these same people would be complaining if Blizzard said beta wasn't coming out for another year. Guess some people are just negative and cynical by nature.
A Hots Beta this Summer would be nice, but I dont realy believe it, till its started. More Possible is, that they will start a friend and family Beta in autumn.

Battle Hellion, Viking; yeah they are pretty much going to be transformers. The unit designs are just so uninspired. They're either units out of BW, or units stolen from C&C. I'm even more worried about the single player. BW had one of the greatest single player campaigns of any RTS ever. SC2 campaign was a boring, retconed, pile of poo. While it's fair to say that the story was pretty retarded, The gameplay of the campaign was really good, with all the different mission types + the upgrade system making it fun to play if you just ignore the story.

While i might have exagerated slightly with the large prize pools, think if you have a choice between watching white-ra playing WoL or Whitera playing HotS. I think most people would choose HotS, therefore it is a better business decision for whitera to stream HotS as he will get more revenue. Furthermore, Whitera has a choice between fighting it out with all the top koreans and foreigners for prize money from events in WoL, likely working extremely hard for a very low chance of a high placing at a major event and then be miles behind the pros who were playing in the beta the whole time when HotS gets released.
Or he can enjoy increased revenue from streaming HotS + get more practice in so when the HotS tournaments arrive, he will be at a large advantage to the people who were playing WoL.
Just look at the bw pro teams which had large numbers of players playing only sc2 when they didn't even know if there would be sc2 in the proleague or not, those players risked the chance that they would not get to have any gains from playing a totally new game for months, just for a chance of having an advantage when the time came. Compare that to the middle tier pros right now and HotS, and they have almost guaranteed increased ad revenue from streaming the beta, (which you can't deny will draw higher viewer numbers then streaming WoL) + they get the practice in for a switch they know 100% is coming.

I really wonder if all the Korean pros supposedly switching to SC2 soon means they will come out and do WoL or just wait for 6-8mths longer to do HoTS. So far the changes in HoTS don't look all that appealing to me anyway but I hope they get it all straightened out.

Not just the storyline was better; the lore, the music, the voice acting (Zeratul and Tassadar's new voice actors are not as good), the fact that the entire setting wasn't just copied from Joss Whendon movies....
Whether or not the game play was "better" is subjective and frankly, they're two different games. It's comparing apples to bananas, some people just prefer one over the other.

Ahh yes, the Tempest. The unit that does the exact same thing as the carrier, but the carrier had to be removed from the game because it was unbalance-able. For some reason.
Wow, they're really doing it fast. Way too fast IMO. Last time they talked about HotS a couple weeks ago, it was pretty much to say "we removed most of our new ideas, we don't know what we're going to replace them with".
And like another poster said, I secretely expected them to bring some deeper changes to Protoss...the race just doesn't work.
They've just trolled everyone with stupid units, the only race with fine adjustments are the zergs. Terran and Protoss have to count the days, because everything will be changed with a "beta release".

Very fast? 2 years in development on already having solid basics. Too fast is the last phrase that could be used here. If they dont start with something like beta to get things done and going, i swear, knowing blizz, it would take 2 years more.
And this is only an expansion. They add 2 units and some new evolutions per race. Having all those feedback from the beta is what they need more than anything, rather than developing ' by themselves' in tiny dark room.

I have played BW off and on for 10ish years, and I can understand the nostalgia argument. I have 10 years of memories that are associated with the game I play. 10 years of experience with game and the appreciation for its development up to this point. While I was not a hardcore competitive player, I still have a lot of history with the game. Being objective between the two isn't all that easy, because you need to be able to squash all the history you have with both games, and play each as if you never played them before.
Which is tough, because obviously people change and what they like changes, which changes the frame of reference for the experience.
With that said, BW as a whole had a wider and a bit more interesting plot, although I felt it was a bit more messy then SC2. Perhaps it was the lack of cutscenes or how important information was unevenly distributed between in-game dialogue and those test blurbs at the start. Overall I think BW was a better story then WoL so far, but the WoL story is the first part of a 3 part arc. Where-as BW was a 2-part arc. So SC2 has time to change my mind pending how stuff like Duran or UED plays out.

Blizzard has a great track record of having great first expansions.
If you look back at all Blizzard games, they seem to follow a pattern where the initial release is a bit of an incomplete product(usually a year delayed). But they get it out there and it is satisfactory. They then use the next expansion to more or less complete the game as intended.
It is actually a pretty smart business ploy, they basically get us to pay $80-90 for what should have been the initially released and complete game. I feel like people are always forgetting that Brood War was an expansion for SC, and that the original SC was a pretty big pile of shit, at least from a multiplayer standpoint. Brood War really cleaned the game up and added a lot of needed features that launched the game to a new level.
So in my opinion, SC2 is pretty much following on line with how Blizzard works. Big release, lots of hype, not a bad product but not great, $40 expansion to "clean it up" followed by what ends up being a pretty nice final product.

Blizzard has a great track record of having great first expansions.

People keep falling into this trap of comparing SC2 to broodwar, as if each game existed in a vacuum with the same developers. Neither case is true. Originally, their lack of understanding for what good multiplayer was stemmed from the industry having a lack of RTS games in general. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with sc1's design (it was just missing roles in each race). Blizzard can't even acknowledge that the colossus is a bad unit and are too afraid to shake things up in the expansion. They're even dancing around putting in BW units missing from SC2 by making silly variations of essentially the same concepts, just so they can be 'original' with the creative process.

What I want to know is where people got the idea that vanilla SC was a "Pile of shit." Did the game have some competitive flaws? Sure... but so does every game that is released initially, that's why there are patches. Besides, when Starcraft was released it was THE best RTS of its time, all the others were vying for second place (though granted it wasn't a crowded market).
On April 30 2012 11:45 onedayclose wrote: So silly this is not featured! Is TL waiting for the official announcement that is never going to come?
Yes. There is a reason this isn't official and that is, nothing is set in stone, Blizzard do have internally some time frames, but that doesn't mean that they will force everything into these dates. That's why they will try to not say a thing till the beta actually kicks and it will also be difficult for TL or any other site to "announce" it like this.
On April 30 2012 11:38 cactusjack914 wrote: Just wondering, How were sc2 beta keys given out / how are people chosen to participate in the beta?
First of all, they give the keys to their friends/family and high collaborators (forum's MVP, owners of fan sites like TL, gaming media etc). In SC2 case, I'd bet that most pros will get one in this first wave as well.
Then they have promotions (sometimes random, sometimes you have to do something creative), opt-in (random), they give keys to sites like TL so TL make their own promotion, but outside of the first wave, it feels somewhat random I guess.

SC2 going from (bad but improving) WOL to (still bad) HOTS will definitely be a deal breaker.
But yeah, cant wait.
If you write WoL is bad ... what the hell you do in WoL TL section ? Get a life or something. I hate people that just say something is bad , but they still follow it etc , its funny.
I am shocked that they haven't said a word about the blatant and game-breaking flaws in Protoss' and Zerg's mechanics.
I also find it astonishing the units we have gotten to see that they plan on adding (and thankfully some have been cut) are actually being taken seriously.
And completely horrified(!) that they don't seem to be finding all that much wrong with Battle.Net 2.0, Roaches, Marauders, Colossus, Hydralisks, Ultralisks, Carriers, Battle-cruisers, Ravens, clumping, Deathballs, coin-flippy-like potential for match-ups. Oh and I don't see much in their Reaper changes. Or the Ultralisk one, or the Baneling one,........or the Hydralisk one. They need to gut their SC2 team, I just see nothing that appealing coming from them.
The transforming hellion idea is cool and kinda gets a firebat like unit in the game. (Personally I l'd like to see it split back to add the firebat and eliminate the hellion and add the vulture back but Transforming hellion seems cool)
Terran seems like the transforming race... Command center can transform, siege tank can deploy (Kind of transform), the Viking obviously... Maybe they will take that idea forward and let all mech/fliers transform. The medivac could land and transform into a healing bunker... not sure about the raven... I like the raven but I think the HSM is kinda gimmicky... Personally I see no need for the Thor... its too big and doesn't fit imho with terrans... I did like it in the campaign but even there it seemed kind of a big hero unit... Goliaths were fine but you could always eliminate the thor and let a landed viking serve as a goliath like unit.... (They seem similar already) who knows....
Zerg overall seems fragile... I think the hydra needs work... Change it from a light unit to an armored unit? Beef up its hps? both? Speed? Not sure... but the hydra seems very weak and not cost effective... Mutalisks are fun but they seem lately like a unit you can fool around with if you are already winning... I just feel mutas are too weak... Maybe an upgrade for their attack would be enough? (Extra bounce?) I do like where blizzard is going with Zerg... the Swarm host over the lurker looks interesting... different but cool. Tunneling banelings? (I just think that might be OP but it looks interesting... it would definitely change games) Everything else blizzard is doing so far looks great. I would say I find the baneling late game to be a near useless response to mass marines and fungal seems OP but if it wasn't I'm not sure how zerg would win games... There is something really strange there where I think micro plays just too much of a factor in the outcome compared to say a siege tank or a collosus. Granted an infestor requires micro to be useful at all... Last the queen spitting is too often... it is a fine mechanic but very boring... (Could we double the energy cost, the larva produced and the time it takes work?... just a suggestion but its a fine mechanic, just boring)
Protoss... I love playing toss but I don't like the carrier.... It seems every cast I watch the casters comment that the carrier has the highest DPS but is that true? I like that pro players are using carriers more but I miss the old carriers and not sure how to fix them. I would be sad to see them go in the next XP. Warp gate seems fine to me and I think I kind of understand what some people are saying regarding its balance... But if it gets changed than all protoss is going to need to change a lot. The warping in units thing makes total sense since they can warp in buildings... why not units? If anything is done with this ability it will affect everything and will require a lot of balance changes... I like where blizzard is going with toss but am not sold on the mineral-shield unit harass... It sounds awesome though. I would like to see different archons depending on how you made the archon... two dark temps equal one kind of archon vs 2 high templars vs 1 of each. (Cloaked archon? Spell caster Archon? Regular Archon?)
Lately I play random and like playing all the races...

So many things wrong with this.
First
1) Terrans are not transformers in the Starcraft universe. 2) the battle hellion is a transformer. 3) landed vikings are transformers...
See where im going with this? Blizzard is obsessed with trying to "remake SC" so they can be "original". But they went a complete 180 degrees the wrong direction with at least 1 race + Show Spoiler +
Terran duh
.
I think they are on the right track with Zerg, although the macro mechanics of the game prevent the power of this race from truly shining. Their units are supposed to be weak and throwaway. But either change mechanics, or buff the race. And Blizzard is proud of their mechanics, so only one option there.

It just looks like where blizz is going with Terran. If its working than run with it? Terran imho are very versatile and can toss out a variety of builds and make for one of the more fun races to watch. I also feel people who know nothing about SC2 can easily connect to Terran and "get" it. (You have to explain the other races more to noobs, but most noobs don't need to be told that a tank shoots big bullet and the viking shoots the rockets etc etc)
Is transforming bad? I did say my preference would be to add the vulture and firebat and eliminate the hellion but what blizzard is doing now doesn't really seem bad... still fun to watch and play. :D
I think the point is that terran went from the scrappy, fragile, uneducated yet strong willed colonial future-wild-west types who has to resort to getting as much as possible from their limited tools in order to stand up to the fearsome aliens, to this super robot transformers thing that one would expect more from Gundam/anime than a dark military game like SC1.
In that case I agree, the "feel" of terran has definitely changed in SC2, more so than the other 2 races.
It's not necessarily a balance thing, just a "feeling", like how Artosis switched races because he said the marauder just goes against everything he fought for as a terran in SC1.

at this point the only way to efficiently tweak it is to push it out to beta and let everyone bitch about it. then they'll actually know what they need to correct.

it was a pre-order system. if you put down $5 you could reserve a copy for yourself and get a beta key on your receipt. i remember quite well since i preordered a bunch of games (so just deposited like $5 for 6 people) and brought back beta keys for everyone. only 2 of us actually ended up buying the game, but for others it was worth the $5 to play the beta.

We recently announced a partnership with Major League Gaming (MLG) for the World Championship Series. What we didn’t mention at the time was that we’ll be offering attendees a special opportunity play StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm at the MLG Pro Circuit Spring Championship event, being held at the Anaheim Convention Center from June 8-10.
We'll have a number of demo stations at the event to show off the latest multiplayer build of Heart of the Swarm, in advance of the upcoming beta test. Attendees will also be able to catch all the exciting StarCraft II eSports action from MLG's Spring Championship and Blizzard's StarCraft II World Championship Series USA Nationals. Head to MLG's Spring Championship site for information on attending. http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/5296836/Heart_of_the_Swarm_at_MLG-4_30_2012#blog
I want you guys to note how they themselves mentioned this:
Dunno if I am reading too much between the lines here but this is all lining up nicely for an October release imo. A show of the beta on june 10, the real beta beginning a few weeks later at the end of June, say 3 months of testing for an October release right before the newly announced all sc2 pro league begins, giving the old BW pros a level playing field....

That's possible, but this beta might be a bit shorter. Maybe..on second thought...it's Blizzard so no :p
I'll find it interesting how the pro-gamers are going to approach this beta. If they don't play the beta at all, they might be behind when HOTS hits, on the other hand. They might practice not as much on WOL tournaments and that's also a problem.
everyone who dont participate in the beta, is behind in HOTS! New units new Build orders and strategies. Hope everyone with excess to the PTR could play it.

Blizzard said they don't plan on doing as long of a beta for HOTS like WoL. They said they were aiming for 3-4 months iirc in a couple interviews. So don't expect it to last as long but it is blizzard as already mentioned so

Same mechanics, same strategery. It'll probably take a few days to catch up most of the way with people who have been playing a lot, but a high-masters player without access will still maul a low-masters who has been playing almost entirely on HoTS for a long time, given a little time to familiarize himself.

Right now it's just a Wings of Liberty streaming client Beta.
They said 1.5.0 would have a stream tech (jsut like D3 and wow past 4.0), they might be testing it and are calling it beta because they are betaing the stream? Idk. I am not saying it's true, but it makes sense.
I can tell many people were not there or do not understand what Starcraft expansions usually include. Broodwar added maybe 6 units (not sure the exact amount), yet it dynamically changed the game. Starcraft balance is changed by the smallest things, so can't you imagine what a unit adds?

I am trying to find a link or some topic that list units to appear in HotS. As I remember, a lot of the units presented at Blizzcon were to be removed and replaced by new units. Is there a thread where all latest updated info about the new units can be found?

What kind of crybaby attitude is that? For one, you will buy HoTS regardless, you don't know how the Tempest will function yet and the mothership was always a dumb unit causing late game ZvP to be a coinflippy archon toilet fest.
If a Goliath a-like unit will be added (warhound) then i guess it will take over the Thors role is someways, but it would be awesome if Thor gets to stay to but its air attack changes to + against armoured instead of light and it gets the mines.
The Thors air attack will be less effective against Phoenixes, Mutalisks and Banshees (Which the Goliath will be good against) and more effective against Corrupters, BL's, Voidrays, Vikings and BC's and whatever new capital ship Protoss is getting.
Man i would love to see Mech TvP against a protoss force with alot of air units. Those Aerial mines would come in handy then to :D

Yeah, the MS was a dumb unit, but BL/Infestor is a dumb composition, and you don't see Blizzard removing that. The Tempest is basically just what the Carrier should have been, so I don't even understand what they're doing there.

But:
- IF the alpha version of HotS is scheduled for a massive public rollout at MLG Anaheim, and
- They actually DO plan on realeasing a public beta in "the weeks after" the event, then ..
In accordance with standard gaming industry practice - and common sense - that means there are more than a few people out there in the community that are already playing HoTS in a private alpha test leading up to Anaheim.
ie. Probably more than a few of the pro's have it. As well as community celeb types (the Day9's, Wheat's etc).
They most likely got it already lol. Under a non-disclosure agreement (of course)

For a completely new game yes, for an expansion no it's still not to fast .
Look at sc1 and then bw (bw came out 6 months after vanilla starcraft). With all their other expansion packs they come out within a year (diablo 2 - expansion came out like a year exactly), wc3 july it came out, a year later expansion came out. Seems they like that year mark .
This is awesome, very very VERY excited for HotS. Only thing I have reserves about is shitty players will be good for awhile. All the current pro's who are at or near the top will continue to play WoL, while the shitty players will start on HotS beta so when the big switch does come, then they have a HUGE advantage over everyone.

well look at it this way. Starcraft 2 is getting a little bit stale in terms of the way players actually play the game. Unit compositions and builds have been found out and worked on and i don't think there is much more different strategies that can be created anymore. The way i see it HOTS will give a new motivation for players that are getting a little bored with this installment. Yes we could argue that if HOTS does not produce in terms of a quality game then it might kill a lot of the starcraft 2 community and the competitiveness it has but on the other hand its a new game and a new thing to look forward to. I just hope that Blizzard don't mess this up.

How does it work then?
Alpha versions are available for blizzard employees (and maybe their families, but I am not sure about that). Beta versions are open for the public (open beta) or for invited people (closed beta).
What I really hope is that blizzard brings the zerg and protoss race on the same difficulty-level as terran. Terran units require a ton of micro (= interesting to watch and interesting to play) and the race has a much higher skill ceiling then the other 2 races (imo).
What I fear is that blizzard will make terran more like protoss (mech deathball).

Actually I'm not sure how Blizzard works, but in alpha phase lots of game testing companies could be testing the product as well.

You have to remember that a lot of this content was already partially worked out back when SC2 was still planned to be a single game.
I think it still is a "single" game; they just pre-planned the expansions. The only thing that was really different was that the story was broken into the expansions by race (same amount of content, but I don't know if it was the best choice).

Certain places have certain laws against stuff that might in some way resemble a contest like this, so Blizzard never does it in those places even if the laws wouldn't affect it, it's the same for certain countries in EU that never get into those kind of contests.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Beta for HotS starts with Season 8. It seems that everything is lining up that way. MLG the weekend before the new season and getting HotS at the tournament and by now they usually say something about the new map pool as well. Maybe it is just a coincidence but that would be awesome if it starts next week

Yes, thank your local/federal government for putting such restrictions on Blizzard.
With all the units removes, while giving protoss useless units in hots. I wish HotS never gets released since it ruins the protoss race. Unless they actually make some decent protoss units, I'll have to switch race.
Also I never understood why would you ever remove units in an "expansion", the word speaks for itself, you're supposed to expand the game.

I can't wait for the new units in Hots as Protoss. The Oracle is going to be fun to use and will be interesting to see how strategies develop off of that. The Tempest I think will actually make Stargate play more viable again and will certainly help against the end game zerg comp right now.
I do think though that they will have to at least add a replacement unit for the Replicant, cause as it stands right now Protoss is getting 3 units removed (Mothership, Carrier, Replicant) and only getting 2 new units with (Tempest, Oracle). I'm rather excited for this weekend and what we have to look forward too.
How would blizzard know whether you reside in those states and thus shouldn't be given a beta key? I dont remember having to provide an address to set up a bnet account.
I think the price discount on WoL is pretty telling. I personally think that they're looking for a Spring Next Year release so a beta should be out soon but thats just complete guessing.

Any discussion of effect of units in pre-alpha build on state of the game after the game goes live is pants-on-head retarded. Sure, tell them that you dislike unit x right now, but there are many changes ahead and Blizzard isn't really afraid to switch things around during betas.

This x1000. Look at the WoL alpha, and then at beta, and then at release. Basically three different games. So much has changed. Roach and hydra tech swapped around in the tech tree, stim on reapers and conc shells on marauders didnt need research. Throw everything you've seen at Blizzcon out of the window, cause there's gonna be a lot of changes.

Thank you for your definitively sweeping statements about a game that isn't out yet, and isn't even in beta yet. Clearly, Blizzard will release HotS and destroy the protoss race. You've given me a lot to think about.

Better experience? Also as they call it "worker friendly" harassing unit... this oracle is worth nothing, worst unit I have ever seen, and why is it called oracle, it would have been a better unit if it could predict the future like the name suggests.
Tempest not good unit either, I see less use for it than the carrier, basicly skytoss is 100% unviable now since there's no unit which can effectively deal with ground units like the carrier could. Plus without mothership you can't recall your air units to safety or cloak them.
Only use to tempest I see is of it being new counter to broodlord instead of mothership, you just mass up those things up and a move. Better experience since you don't have to micro your tempest and position it like you had to land a good vortex on a broodlord army with a mothership. That's not better experience, I'm not a bronze player for gods sack.

I don't think design-wise Protoss can get ruined any more. Protoss already creates most problems with the design and I am looking forward to see that fixed.
I mean just from a mapmaker's perspective, designing maps around Protoss is absolute bullshit... and imho there is good reasons why TvZ and TvT are the best matchups (tanks aka positionally strong units?!)
I absolutely agree that what we see in Beta will be completely different then what we see at release for HotS. However, you're right that I should not of made comments in regards to what strategy will be like. My response was more intended to the person I quoted as if it will be doom and gloom for toss. I can see the units being somewhat close to their core concept with some number tweaking and any needed balance changes depending on what happens in beta.

The biggest difference between beta and release will be some changes to unit cost, timings of upgrades, not a lot more. That's vastly different from sweeping changes with regards to resource income, unit pathfinding, macro mechanics, adding/removing units. What we'll get in the beta preview this weekend is what we'll end up with, just with better balance.

I like this idea, mainly cos i'm in masters :D
Blizzard needs to give anyone at or above masters level access to the beta, since 1. those people will buy the game anyway 2. they're in maybe the best position to give good feedback on balance and design and 3. they need to be able to check out the game to be able to keep up skillwise with other high level players that did manage to secure beta access.

The biggest difference between beta and release will be some changes of unit cost, timings of upgrades, not a lot more. That's vastly different from sweeping changes with regards to resource income, unit pathfinding, macro mechanics, adding/removing units. What we'll get in the beta preview this weekend is what we'll end up with, just with better balance.
At least I think that it will be vastly different from last Blizzcon's sneak peak :D
Hopefully. But I do think it'll be the case, so much more time should've enabled them to come up with much better ideas.
So they are actually showing the game at Anaheim? I seem to remember hearing something to the contrary but I could be making that up in my brain. I'll be very interested to see whether or not it'll be a vast departure from the Blizzcon version, although I'm not in favour of either option in particular. Just interested. I'm not one of you pessimistic bastards who is determined to believe that everything needs changing and everything they showed was rubbish and the game will be further broken and where are lurkers anyway

They're definitely showing it, about 200 PCs where you can play HotS, I think.
I'm looking forward to the Beta!! Obviously it won't be perfect at that stage but I think HOTS will make the game even better once it's released. And playing the beta will be great to get a feel of the new units, what's good, what's bad and whatnot .
And it brings back the opportunity to be innovative and come up with cool build by yourself , will be sweet!

yeah, it should be pretty different considering they cut one or two units since Blizzcon.

Anyone who thinks masters players are going to give unbiased quality feedback should probably rethink their view on the community and realize how it's been operated... Read any protoss balance thread, terran balance thread or zerg balance thread... We all know everything, and everyone else's opinions can fuck off. No ur right but progamers are the same so thats part of David Kim's job to distinct whats biased stupid QQ and what has good basis. And in any case master players feedback will be more valuable than bronze leaguers u know
It's probably been said in the 22 pages, but the title really should read "released in the weeks after MLG" rather than "released weeks after MLG" to show that the Beta will be out in a few weeks or less, not around a few weeks after Anaheim.
I PM'd the OP with my thoughts, but here's something i noticed
Dont know if you noticed this, but i read the rules for the arcade beta contest
It states that the contest ends June 12th and that the winners will be drawn on the 15th
It then states that winners will be notified within 5 days of drawing (15th-20/21st) and that in order to redeem the prize winners just simply follow the instructions in the email/message they recieve..
This leads me to believe that the beta will release during the week of the 17th (1 full week after MLG comes to an end)

The Warp Gate mechanism doesn't need to be removed (this coming from a terran player) It makes protoss a unique race and it suits the High Tech profile of Protoss among the 3 races, which makes the race cool. Warp Gate needs to be revised though coz its quite imba. My suggestion is maybe make the units more vulnerable or easier to get sniped during the warp-in process? At least Protoss will need to prepare earlier to defend drops, if u know what i mean
man I just want blizzard to release SOMETHING to get me hyped for MLG, a silhouette, anything. And god I hope there is a stream or someone following the HOTS beta at MLG and isn't just matches.

They probably wont need nearly that long though for this beta. The only reason they would need to take that long is if they dont plan to release it this year and want to drag out beta just to drag it out.

Anyone hoping for HoTS to release in 2012 is quite the optimist. I'd wager it's gonna be Q1 2013, at the earliest.
Got in the first wave of WoL beta but I have a feeling that I won't have the same luck again. It will be fun to see all the new stuff but all the competition will stay in WoL until release so even if you get in I'm guessing the novelty will wear off shortly there after.

What? If beta is really coming this month, and all signs are pointing to that, then chances are it will release this year. The longest a Blizzard beta has ever gone was Diablo 3, but that was a whole new engine/game and even then, it was way above their average. Most Blizzard betas run for 3-5 months. As this is an expansion, chances are very high it won't go longer then that. That would put it at a late November/Early December release at the latest, and would be just in time for the holiday season.
I hope Blizzard takes enough time to adjust stuff for HotS. For WoL they overrushed Zerg mostly, Zerg being the race that received the least amount of development time. This clearly shows when compared to the well-developed Terran race.
This is their chance to fix a lot of stuff that simple balance patches could not. For me as Zerg this is mostly the Corruptor and the Hydralisk, possibly the Infestor with NP, the nydus worm and early game AA-difficulties the P and T have not. The new units still look promising.
I would have loved to see some more of the singleplayer-stuff in multiplayer (zerglings able to jump down cliffs, that kind of stuff). But I guess that's too hard to balance... and in WoL a lot of the Terran stuff was also single-player only.

Can some of you guys who say "too fast" please back up your comment with your rationale? It almost feels you like you want WoL to stay as-is for 5 years before any expansion.
By that time, would even you still be playing? It's due time for HOTS.

Yep. Normal beta period is 3-5 months. All the signs are points towards beta going live this month, which would make the game come out in November at the latest.
I don't think the beta is gonna come THIS soon. Remember summer 2009? Blizzard kept repeating "beta this summer!" and it actually started 6 months later (feb '10).
blizzard alreadeeeeey stated that the repli-cunt was removed as it only removed diversity from the game, not how they hoped... srsly only the name.... if it replicates there won't be no diversity in a radius of 5 miles
On June 08 2012 20:11 stilee wrote: that shitty replicant unit better not make it to the beta. >_<
The replicant was already cut.
In the last build we heard about it, which is probably a build from early this year. For all we know they might as well have put it in in another shape/form again, and chances are maybe even something totally different.
I feel like blizzard will aim for a christmas 2012 release, I know how everyone is talking about it's blizz they take forever right now blabla. But they already cut half a year from goms exclusive contract to broadcast sc2 in korea to basically fight lol in korea, and it would not shock me if they would release hots earlier then usually just to put it up against lol in korea earlier. Anaheim is this weekend and given that the 1.5 beta is basically just a huge hots beta key raffle (it's not like there is anything in that beta besides global play that they would benefit from having tested publicly), I could see hots beta starting whenever 1.5 beta ends, maybe a bit later so people get hyped a bit more about 1.5 going live on wol.
I really hope I get in first wave, because other wise I'm probably gonna end up buying one of ebay, I'm way too pumped for this game and given how many people will stream it I don't think I'm gonna be able to be patient about this one.

sure it's an expansion but still a full game, we are getting new campaign, new MP, new challenges (probably), new maps, new ladder, new achievements, new portraits (probably). Blizzard could easily sell this as a $60 game because it's basically a standalone from WoL but they are being nice guys and dropping it down to what expansions normally sell for. Think of HotS as Black Ops 2, and WoL as MW3, different games but play exactly the same.

Afaik WoL will be required to play HotS. They have to consider that when they price their product, it will be in fact an expansion, not a stand-alone game.

No, it is not a 60$ game. They didn't need to create an engine for it, or editor or set up servers for online play. They just used already existing basics and added some art and some new sounds and animations.

1,5 year for WoW. HoTS seems to be taking a bit longer which is fine.

The beta is definitely soon on the horizon. Besides even if it's just a beta they still will make some rapid changes to the game before it's actual release just like WoL. Imagine if we still had 1 supply Roaches... Stephano would be taking even MORE money "to the bank".
OK, I've found some information that I don't think anyone has latched onto yet. It's from the interview with Chris Sigaty where he discusses the release of the Heart of the Swarm beta. He states "we're a couple of months away from heading into that." Skip to 9:55 to hear it yourself.
I think it would be important to add this information to the OP so that people aren't hanging onto the idea that the beta will be coming out next week.
One thing about HotS that will be kind of neat is that it will buff Ghosts in TvZ. Now that you've got two casters to deal with, Snipe/Emp is going to be that much more important. I'm looking forward to using them again :D

my friend mentioned that but it seems odd, he might have meant to say weeks instead

I hope they make some adjustments to snipe. Having 2 spells focused around countering casters makes the unit as a whole extremely one-dimensional.
I understand that they had to do something to nerf ghosts as snipe was too strong obviously, but their solution just seemed like a band-aid fix. With HOTS they have the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate the unit and maybe give it a less pigeonholed role.
Well, I think sigaty just makes a random guess tho. Dustin Browder said if the game isn't good enough, they won't release it. So guessing that the beta takes about 3 months maybe isn't that accurate (because I think Sigaty doesn't know that much about balance). But if beta balances out quickly, hots will also be released quickly.
A 2012 release was beyond my expectations But I guess there's a small chance now.
Chris Sigaty thinks the beta will last about 3 months (pretty short). And I think he's saying they'll start beta in a couple of weeks.
He touches this subject, starting at around 9:30.
No. He said something like, assuming that there's nothing major they need to fix, they're a couple of months away from heading into beta.
Well, I was confused by it too, but I think he referred to "getting it out" as the game. Because after that he says something like: A few weeks from now we think we'll have a solid build and get into beta. (roughly paraphrased) But he clearly says that he thinks beta will take around 3 months.
edit: But either way, that's also speculation by him, so nothing big I guess.

Anybody knows how you can get a beta key if it is time?
Play WoL 1.5 Beta and review games. Other than that we don't know at this point. Blizz will probably hand out randomly in waves and obviously to pros/personalities/tournaments/teams. Probably gonna be quiet similiar to wol beta, get lucky, win a contest or buy on ebay.

Only 250 keys in that contest is really bad :\ And the more days that you review a game, the more chance you have to get a key. So I guess you only stand a chance if you do that everyday, and then you're still not secured of a key.
Looks like it will be starting on July 11 or around then.

When does this thread title start becoming inaccurate? I know it can never be literally inaccurate, but it is coming up to a month after MLG Anaheim and still no official word on when the Beta will commence.

You forget were dealing with blizzard time here. It works inversely to ingame sc2 time. 3 months for them is probably closer to double that, if were lucky. I still don't expect the game to be out this year.
But if it ends up being good and gets out this year than I won't complain, just as long as its not rushed!

Abduct is awesome yo :D.
As for beta I imagine we still have quiet a wait tbh. They said they wanted to release patch 1.5 (which they haven't even announced a date for that yet) and then they would start working super hard on getting hots beta out. Honestly I don't expect it until winter if we're lucky.

winter sounds a tad absurd. i imagine they'd want to release the full game by christmas. with a 3 month-ish beta, late september seems more likely. Remember they're on a clock these days with game releases.

Not a chance HotS is released by Xmas. Quote me later. As a Zerg player, I hope they buff Terran a bit in the 1.5 patch and then go full bore into HotS. I'm still enjoying WoL very much so I am not in any rush.
The beta foruns for 1.5 are not seeing much updates, so I think this might mean 1.5 is coming soon OR a new build ("patch 3") should arrive soon at the beta, which would mean some more weeks of beta...
HotS is not coming out this year. They've already said in some shareholder meeting that they hope to release "at least two games" in 2012, which are D3 and MoP (late August).

You must not know the meaning of "at least." That doesn't mean only D3 and MoP. HotS could be released this year too.

well blizzard isn´t on a clock... blizzard is one of the only companies that won´t throw out release dates... so they can realease it whenever they feel like its ready... i kinda feel like november december to... and i expect the release for around march 2013. the beta wont last that long this time. i guess max 3 months.

I do know the meaning of "at least" in corporate-speak. It means "rumors of 3 games this year notwithstanding, we're probably going to only be able to release 2".
This is Blizzard. If they're qualifying their "soon" with "maybe", you can be sure it's nowhere near done.
I am happy with any delay of HotS as long as the game is polished by then. Worst case would be some unfinished crap like D3. HotS should revitalise the SC2-Community and not diminish it.

at least 2 games means they could also release 50 games this year. This just wanted to release a minimum of 2.

MoP is not coming out in August...Blizzard do the same shit every year, WoW is Q3 every time (oct-dec)
Beta is miles off i think, like people have stated, the arcade beta has been going for a while yet with no confirmed dates set for when that hits, and when it does it will be 2-3 more weeks until we get news on when the BETA will come out, your looking at about Sept-Oct for HOTS beta, then that will be played out until Dec, with Jan/Feb release for HOTS.

as far as i heard blizzard opting to release 1 big title every year... at least that´s what they said... idk if add ons count as big titles aswell... but in case of hots think yes...
Kinda of odd that we dont get hots beta yet. It makes comeplete sence to give it to us during holidays, though we might still get it during the holidays.
This wednesday they will draw the winners from the betakey rate a game 1.5 beta contest, and all winners will be informed via email within 5 days from wednesday. I'd say once all the winners get their keyes or w/e we should know a release date of the beta. I could certainly see it starting within the next 2-3 weeks.

They've specifically stated they're aiming to get MoP out sooner. Also, public beta to launch has always been 5 months. That means August release. They've already printed the boxes and they're in raid testing, addons enabled. Late August launch.
Isn't this a little extreme now? In the past, didn't expansions sometimes come within the same year, or at most the next year? Wasn't starcraft 2 released in 2010? It seems like they should have tried harder to get the orginial momentum and interest in sc2 to grow and not let it peter out...

D3 happened, plus they have to keep developing WoW expansions.
Bobby Kotick will not let them hire appropriate numbers so they shuffle people back and forth between different games. They still have "creative control" but not financial control.
If you doubt this, it's been TWO YEARS and still no paid name change in SC2.

its not only the 2 new units for each race... its the whole campaign, its the new bnet ui and many other balancing issues that they need to work on... i rather wait for hots to be good, then put it out to fast and desytroying the sc2 scene...
The chef himself said it will start this summer. Not soon, this summer. Which means latest in September but I dont really count this as summer. My guess is in the next 2 or 3 weeks at least I hope so.

First day of Fall in in the northern hemisphere is September 22. Knowing Blizzard I wouldn't expect the beta anytime soon, they have a track history to back up this thought too.

It won't be otherwise they wouldn't hold contests for a beta key
Most people who sign up for the beta eventually get in. Sadly it can take a while. The SC2 beta was like half over by the time I got in. Had to watch streams and VODs for weeks T_T
It really surprises me when people keep accusing Blizzard of giving them false information about Beta. Please look at history... they usually announce a beta about a month before it starts. They never give a release date otherwise. They were hoping for Summer. They might still make it.
Also, it will not be an open beta until the last couple of weeks of the beta (if that).
In case you haven't seen it, there was a Browder interview about a month ago in which he said that HOTS is 99 percent done but there is still some polishing to do. He didn't get any more specific than that (didn't even say "soon").

Yeah I traded some games for a sc2 beta account and then 1 week later got in (this was early beta). God I remember that first week I skipped a couple of periods of school just to watch people play and me be super jealous. I got in 2-3 weeks after but traded the games for an account 3-4 days after beta started.
Hope I get in first when beta starts if I were somehow lucky.

When has Blizzard ever announced a start date for a beta? It's always a vague time frame then one day it's just out. That's the way it was for WoL too and most likely the way it will be for HotS.
anyone else completely underwhelmed? With the fail of diablo 3 and WOL being sub par... i honestly em looking more forward GW2, even though i don't even plan on playing it. Hopefully Blizz pulls through... sigh....

to be honest Activision wouldn't have ever put the features in, not if the game sold well. If it sells well then they will release a sequel and thats it.
Considering we are half way through July, so much for all the end of June predictions. Maybe peoples feed back from playing it at MLG made blizzard push it back. Or maybe they are holding HOTS back until the next WoW expansion is out?

Where the heck are all of you guys who hate WoL coming from? I love Starcraft 2! I thought the single player was cool and well-paced, I think the multiplayer is fun, intense and diverse, and I love the community that surrounds it!
Yeah, WoL was good. It was missing a ton of features from battle.net 1.0 at the beginning but it got better.
Plus, the map editor rocks is even better than Warcraft 3's map editor (no more memory leaks, no more having to do fancy stuff to do things... though I admit I did like showing off my vJASS skills in my maps [actually no, I just used someone's library >.>] in Warcraft 3), etc.
Now, if only they could allow us to use Diablo III assets in Starcraft 2...

That's only because of the popularity system (which is part of battle.net 2.0), rather than the actual map making tool SC2 provides (I used enough WC3 to know that SC2 really allows more freedom).
I think a good way of saying it is WC3's map editor is easy to use but hard to master.
SC2's map editor is tedious (and hard to get into) to use but more easy to master.
So, there is a drawback. In WC3, almost anything can be done (damage detecting, custom spells, even FPS like games, etc) but it just requires fancy scripting (and there were plenty of modding sites to help).
SC2 makes doing complicated stuff more easier "but" it does make doing easy stuff (like creating a new unit) harder or more tedious.
However, I think SC2 overall wins out because I'd say SC2's editor is easier to use "overall". I mean, making a tower defense map is harder in SC2 than in either BW or WC3, but making more complicated maps is much easier in SC2 than in WC3 or BW. I was an avid map maker in WC3 and am too SC2 (though I admit, it is a lot more tedious than in WC3).
I think the thing that makes SC2 really win out is it's much less buggy than WC3 (which makes SC2 editor, while complicated to use, less prone to certain frustrating bugs or glitches that were present in WC3).
SC2 is fine, just battle.net 2.0 could use some more work (like a custom game lobby).

Nah, WOL is getting pretty stale.
Even without HotS WoL's metagame will continue to evolve for quite sometime.
Concerning the SC2 editor and SC2 maps: There is probably a chunk of people sitting on map ideas that they havent released/made because of the map marketplace, where they want to make some money off of their work.
They will release beta in agost because in a interview Chris Sigaty said that they were going to release the beta in "about 2 months" and he said that in june...

Only because of the patches. Were this the game that was released and blizzard didn't patch I think it'd be pretty stale by now.

I was agreeing with you, that's why it's kind of shocking that there isn't a lot of good maps.I think it has a lot to do with the core mechanics of Sc2. For example: all of the LOTR maps aren't as funny as they were before, all the units die in a second, and they were released by the same team that made the W3 ones. Even maps based on other W3 maps such as Worms are not as good, and all the RPG's suck. Can you recommend me any decent maps?

Maybe, but they have to prove that they can make good maps if they don't there's not going to be any market waiting.
I don't really want it TBH. Feels like its too soon. If they do release it though, it will probably be around the time of the 2 year sc2 anniversary at the end of the month.

Nah, WOL is getting pretty stale.
Even without HotS WoL's metagame will continue to evolve for quite sometime.
Only because of the patches. Were this the game that was released and blizzard didn't patch I think it'd be pretty stale by now.
Yes, having watched SC2 matches for 2 years now, I am really getting tired of it. It's the same thing over and over again. I keep watching hoping once in a blue moon there is an epic game where something different happens, but because of stupid things like the deathball mechanic and terrible terrible damage, the game will never ever have depth.

Eh you have to realize new things take awhile to come up with. BW is an example of this I mean there would be long periods of time of a certain race dominating then some player after a long time figures out something new. It's only been 2 years and most things have probably been found out but I would not be surprised if there were still strategies out there that could be figured out given a couple more years without expansions.
Honestly though I just want hots because I am looking forward to being able to stop deathballs as zerg with abduct and swarm hosts have the potential to be super kickass as well.

Ghosts won't be usable since Abduct is much longer range than EMP/Snipe.
I propose a perma ban for the OP. At least a really large temp. HUGE news spammed everywhere, so many evidence found everywhere that means absolute nothing yet this topic was updated and got people hopes up just based on conjecture.

Im confused, how can you say its the same thing over and over again? Look at PvP how it has evolved the last few months for example. The only thing that has been stale for a long time was ZvT and that was before the queen patch.
Just last week nerchio did something nobody has done before, he pushed the DTs away from his hatchery using drones.

Different games are developed by different teams, there isn't too much overlapping.

I think this is a stupid perspective to have. First of all, there has been plenty of innovation in the game. If you look at the game a few months back from now the meta game was completely different than it is now so things are clearly still evolving and I don't understand how you could think it was stale in the first place.
Secondly even when the innovation finally slows down or nearly stops (once HotS and LotV have been release for a while) what's wrong with that? At that point there's no gimmicky "I can get a free win because no one knows about this little niche thing I found" which in my eyes is a good thing. Then it's up to the pros at the highest level to prove who has the best execution around and who can get in the other guy's head more.
We always see comparisons of SC2 to professional sports as spectator sports and when was the last major innovation in Basketball or Football? The games have been majorly unchanged for many years yet they have huge fan bases, why? Because people love the game and they love the teams and players. We watch for the love of the game and to root on the people we support (at least I do). If I never saw something "new" in SC2 for the rest of the game's life I would be OK with that because the pros would still continue to elevate their level of execution and perfection.
Just like I can't compete with or compare to college or pro level basketball players I still love watching the game to root for my teams/players and be amazed by their talents and skills, despite the fact that the game is still pretty much the same as it was 10 or 20 years ago. SC2 is the same in my eyes as a spectator sport and to think that SC2 will never stagnate at some point in terms of innovation in the game seems silly and short sighted.
Wow this got a lot longer than I was intending pretty quickly. Hopefully it makes sense. :D

Now that's indeed the case but about 5 years ago that was absolutely not the case as for example a lot of the team that was working on SC2 had to move to the WoW team to assist them because they coudln't handle it on their own .

With that logic, Fungal and Storm shouldn't be used because EMP has a longer range.

It's not that hard to make a pimpest plays for sc2. One has already been made, and it was pretty epic... Never ending wall of Hong-Un ftw. If we had to make one for this past year, I would put 1) Nerchio saving his hatch against DTs without detection on Ohana 2) MC holding the 4-gate with a 2-gate robo (don't remember the map) 3) Naniwa's forcefields with sentry/stalker on shakuras to push out all of the lings at MLG. That was amazing 4) I don't remember who did the hallucinated immortal count then went void ray all-in etc.

There is a difference between constructive and destructive criticism. If all he does is voice his opinion about how shitty he thinks SC2 is on a SC2-themed forum, this is destructive (also called trolling) and he should just gtfo. If he says what is wrong with SC2 in his opinion and what should change in a constructive manner, then that's totally fine ofc (and has been done a thousand times already).
Loving the sweeping balance judgements based on a game that hasn't even been released in beta form yet. Bravo TL.
Also, I don't know how people can be bored with WoL. Do you watch tournaments? There is so much amazing content available and so many shifts in styles and options. As a mid-masters player, I find myself constantly (pleasantly) surprised by what I now need to adjust to and keep in mind.
In short: I hope you can stop complaining and enjoy the embarassment of riches right under your noses. HotS will be out when it's out. You're just going to get bored of that too.
