My thoughts too. Top 8 should be awarded prizes. And with three days to use (I realize the schedule might have been an issue at DH Stockholm) there really should be enough time to play Bo5 semis and maybe also Bo5 quarters. Bo3 semis feels rather meh.

1) Exchange rates. 100 000 SEK wont be worth the same when the tournament takes place. 2) Dreamhack is a swedish tournament that takes place in Sweden, ofcourse they will use their currency. 3) Because Swedish crowns is totally the pimpest currency in the world (not biased)
So most of the players are playing only for points which is rather unfortunate. I dont like it and i also think this hinders the player pool a lot. On the contrary the mangement of dreamhack is doing a great job and i have always enjoyed their events, so keep up the good work guys.

Its a improvement. Last year those extra DH events paid only the winner.
DreamHack always does the best job hosting tournaments (at least from a spectators point of view).
Will be good!
GG GL HF LETS GO :D
----- Also, regarding showing the prize in SEK... Obviously since they give you SEK it should say SEK. If the dollar or euro becomes absolutely worthless tomorrow, 100 000 SEK is still 100 1000 SEK.
I guess we could ask DH to show the equivalent prize in bananas, or goldfishes, or chinese Yuan (since that involves the most pepole) but in my mind that makes no sense either !

I'm sure ironsquid was great for french people watching it live, but for the majority of people watching the laggy restream it wasn't that good.
You should have join us watching the original stream not the ironsquid restream...
The original stream that was in 100% french? Not to mention anything happening on stage was spoken in french. The majority of people watching wouldn't understand a word of it. Ironsquid sadly only caters to a small french audience, if they want to keep doing what they do and grow that is going to have to change.

NO! TB and Apollo casted and streamed their own. Then Iron Squid restreamed it with their name and they put banners etc.
Name of this original stream was something called ironsquidsecret2. There was only 400-500 viewer, 1080p, so it didn't lag at all. + you saw what TB was doing and game lobby chat
I really dislike the format Dreamhack is using. Day 1 is nothing but pro's versus randoms and because they refuse to pay stipends we will have another underwhelming player pool.

It´s actually one of the refreshing things about these DH tournaments. There´s no behind the scenes negotiations, no demands and no seeds. It is just straight up "we have some prize money, if you want any of it you will have to play your way through 124 other participants". It is also nice because they aren´t trying to plan anything, the brackets will be what they are. I think it is a big reason they always manage to deliver so emotional finals, because of the pure competitive spirit and the feeling of accomplishment when you know you have fought through the whole field to be in the finals. Like a big build-up.
Do keep in mind too, that this is in all essence a qualifier for DH winter.

That's not because they refused to pay stipends, it's because they realize that they need to foster to local scene to make sc2 sustainable or else SC2 will just be the same thing CS 1.6. was in Sweden (Huge following but still died out).

Go watch GSL then, having an open tournament gives up and comers a chance to prove themselves. Also the grand finals will most likely be stacked, this is just a qualifier with prizes basically.

Do you honestly think that there were over 1.000.000 different people tuning in to EIZO stockholm and that "millions of viewers around the globe." will tune in to watch DH Summer? I think not.

GSL is also an open tournament tho but just like Dreamhack it's really only the playoffs that are interesting.

Please use reason, do you really think 1.000.000 [ONE MILLION] unique people tuned in to watch DH Stockholm? really? It really irks me when people put "statistiks" over reason. It is simply not true, can't you make that out yourself? How many active starcraft 2 players are there worldwide? maybe 2 million? (I think that is an exaggeration but lets say it is 2 mil) do you mean that half of them tuned in to watch DH STHLM? Even if people who dont play tuned in it wouldn't mkae much of a difference.
Even if i missquoted or their article said something else it doesnät change the fact that there is no chanse that DH sthlm had 1 million unique viewers.

The definition of "unique viewer" is the amount of unique IP-addresses connecting to the stream. Think of it this way, if I have a dynamic IP-address and connect multiple times, I will count as a new unique viewer if my IP has changed. But this also applies in reverse to everyone connecting from the same network/NAT. If me and my brother connect to the stream from the same network, we will only count as 1 unique viewer.
There is no real way to distinguish the real numbers without forcing everyone to use a private account to watch the stream. As you said the real numbers are probably lower, but it's impossible to get exact figures, counting the unique viewers is the best way to get a decent estimate.
Also I think you underestimate how many people that actually don't play the game, but watch streams. I own SC2, but I don't play at all, although I enjoy watching pro's play in various tournaments. Just like I watch any other sport/activity without practicing it myself.

This is exactly what I've bee ntalking about all the time. Most internet users have dynamic IP-adresses and so on. I also own SC2, and I dont either and I watch all major tournaments.

Are you suggesting Dreamhack blatantly lied about their viewer numbers? IPL and MLG have both reported similar numbers and considering Dreamhack got quite a bit of mainstream media attention here in Sweden I definitely think it's not only possible but even probable. Since they got ~30-40k average concurrent viewers and maybe 80% of those were dedicated fans, think about all the people who just tuned in for 20 minutes and then tuned out during the ~20 hours of broadcasting time throughout the weekend. Things add up

Some facts need to be straighten up here:
1. Unique viewers is a metric that is used for online streaming. This metric is very much like "Unique visitors" for web analytics. This is not a perfect measurement because it's actually impossible to measure the exact amount of people visiting a site. Although this is the closest and best measurement in this industry and is thus a metric in the industry that different tools use (SiteCatalyst, Google Analytics etc.)
When DreamHack reports the way they do they are not trying to hide facts or doing something wrong, they just provide with the stats they get from their provider (TwitchTV) and it's a industry metric.
2. It's actually possible that Millions will watch DreamHack Summer DreamHack Summer 2011 had over 3M Unique Viewers (Yes, the metric) with all of their streams combined.
With all the games including popular ones like the growing Dota2, StarCraft2 as well as League of Legends + broadcasting on Swedish Television (Not only web stream, ordinary TV broadcast as well) it's possible that they will get millions of people watching. A prime-time show broadcasted on SVT1 in Sweden will easily get 300 000 viewers. So even consider that there are problems with the measurement "Unique viewer" it's still possible that Millions of people will watch DreamHack Summer.
... And they'll definitely get Millions of "Unique Viewers" (The metric).
You are SERIOUSLY underestimating the amount of people who just watch tournaments, but rarely/never play SC2. I haven't played a single game of SC2 in the last 16 months or so, but I have watched every bigger tournament to date. And I know atleast 25-30 people who do the same. A million viewers is nothing.

Well, Midsummer is on June 22-23 this year, which means the weekend AFTER Dreamhack, so that cannot be the reason for having the tournament like this. Maybe they want to spread out the different tournaments? I don't know when the other finals are though, only care about SC2.

Sorry if this has been asked, but, I see that Day 1 starts @ 08:45AM EDT.. will the streams be rebroadcasted at the end of each day? Would be awesome.
Well everything will be streamed on twitch as far as i know with record mode enabled. Last DH the vods of the entire day were up on twitch like 5mins after the day ended, im guessing this also will be the case this weekend. (at least i hope so)
Grand Final is played BO5 in DreamArena Extreme in front of the huge on-site audience and millions of viewers around the globe.
Really.. Millions? Kind of a big leap from the ~60K they had last event
Always enjoy DH thogh, on-site or stream!
EIZO Stockholm had over million unique viewer.
Stats from Twitch.TV Total Video Views 2,678,996 Unique Video Views 1,076,914 Average viewing time: 47 minutes per unique viewer
No, it had over one million unique VIEWS, not one million viewers.
Do you honestly think that there were over 1.000.000 different people tuning in to EIZO stockholm and that "millions of viewers around the globe." will tune in to watch DH Summer? I think not.
You realize the site you quoted says "In total over 1 million unique viewers tuned in to watch the show" and is titled "One million viewers", right? ^^,
My personal homepage has 1.000.000.000 uniwue viewers!
In grown-up life, things doesn't come true just becaus someone said so.
Do you think it did? really?
yeah, I'd be surprised if even 100,000 truly unique viewers tuned into to watch sc2, the stream rarely gets over 50k, 1 million is totally misleading and probably only used to draw advertisers etc

Don't confuse unique viewers with concurrent viewers. 50k concurrent usually means about 4-5 times as many unique viewers and sometimes even a lot more if the tournament goes on for a long time (i.e. 12+ hours like the last dreamhacks) since it's moving through different timezones and people have to stop watching or can't start watching right from the start.

According to MLG they had 4.7 million unique viewers and a peak of 437,000 concurrent viewers. This is of course including LoL. But DH also counts LoL viewers.
When it comes to dynamic IP it really is not relevant since it only changes when you restart the router/modem for most people. 1 million unique viewers does not sound impossible, especially not when you count LoL. A lot of viewers don't even own starcraft.

I don't mind the fact that they dont pay stipends because its their decision really but I think it does definitely hurt the tournament. I enjoy watching underdogs and up and comers but I would say I have only heard of 25% of the players in the tourney and like you said its pretty much 1 known player per group. The underdogs got to have someone to beat.
It's only my opinion but I feel like this is just easy money for about 5 of the players that are really good and the first day will be spent watching EU playhem with special guests instead of a top tournament.

It's often two known players per group, and it's not MVPTails, it's a Swede nicknamed Tails. The other known player in the group is Jonnyrecco.

Ya I edited it out once I realized it was a Swedish flag. And I watch a lot of SC2 (admittedly less in tune with the European scene) but its hard for me to recall more then 1 player from most groups. But again this is a European tournament so I guess it makes sense that most of the players are European. For me its just not as exciting as seeing some top tier Koreans fighting it out because these just arent top tier players. I guess a Ret vs Nani match would be cool. Or of course T zain winning would be nice to see.

The main streams didn't even start yet from what i can see, so give it a little time :p
The main streams need to be listed on TL. Do you guys know whats the name of the other commentator on the IMBA.tv stream? The one with the slight accent
EDIT: I asked the chat. The caster is Addicted, turns out to be from Bulgaria. I knew it, the accent sounded familiar.

theres a UK player i've never heard of who took the first qualifiers 3 - 0 only dropping like one game and that was agaisnt stephano. I thought JonnyRecco was attending too from UK?
floating bases is just BM so whats the answer, spend 2 supp on a flying unit and hide it in corner?.
In the lower leagues, this happens just too much. Most of the time however there is always a drone left. the point im trying to make is buildings should lose energy after being floated for more than 120 secs to stop this shit OR ovies/prisms count as structures??

Why? So all 3 races can BM? Neither play won or lost.
so you read one point and respond, no other race can float buildings. Its just BM to force a draw like that. if both players cannot produce another unit and one player DOESNT have a force then the win should go to any player with an attacking force. Dragon had a banshee, cyto had queens and infestors. It was only because of the BMing corner blocks which forced the draw. I just dont like it cos T are the only person who can do it
ok then give everyone a similar ability zerg burrow all buildings, toss cloak (still they cant fly to corners but it will waste a hell of a lot of time if you have 10 sup of units and no detection . . . but again T win with scans! . . doh
I just think its daft, if you dont agree then fair enough. HOTS seems to be favouring the shorter games with more shit going on at the moment

This discussion was head a million times and the conclusion always was: Yup, Terrans can do something the other races can do which is the nature of Starcraft; You just have to take that into account before you go into basetrades.
Kinda disapointed by this dreamhack. 1rst the DieStar, Frayer and sLviko, were the 2 rokkis player play they game last. 2nd the 3rd Group seed given befor the cytoplasm game where finished.

Yup mate, they were suppose to play first game but refused wtf and then they set 2:1 and fucked diestar over, what a joke

So close to 100,000 viewers. Really awesome job from DreamHack
