The time has finally come! Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is officially released!
Im very proud and super excited to finally show this movie to you. Constructive criticism of any kind is greatly appreciated!
Starcraft - Rebirth of the Swarm is the biggest Starcraft 2 Machinima Project to date. It is a 60 minute long, fully voiced Starcraft 2 machinima movie. For the last two and a half years, this machinima has been my pet project and it has come a long way since its announcement and im very proud of getting this project finished.
Now, before we get to the link, heres some information about the movie in general:
- The movie is fully voiced in english and also features english subtitles
- The movie has an exact running time of 60 minutes and 5 seconds
- The movie is released on Youtube in 720p with Stereo Sound, additionally to that, the movie is available for download featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 1440x1080 HD quality. The downloadable version is playable on a PS3 and should be playable on most other Blu-Ray and DVD players. I can be found below.
I apologizes that the downloadable version is not available today due to some unexpected errors with the upload, however, I hope to be able to make it available in the next two days, preferably tomorrow!

Lets start this out by saying that watching this movie over Youtube is a perfectly fine way of watching this movie. The sound has been optimized to work within a stereo enviroment and while there is a noticable loss in the video quality, the quality loss is still within a very acceptable level. Keep in mind that the sound was optimized for headphones, so I suggest you use some high quality ones to watch this movie.
With said, the recommended way of watching this movie is by downloading the movie and watching it on your PC with headphones. That way, you get 100% out of the video quality and the sound quality. The biggest difference is that the downloadable version has a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mixing, which greatly increases the quality of the audio. The gain in visual quality is also very noticable.
Also, there is the possibility of watching the downloaded movie on your television set. This is also a valid way of watching this movie, expecially seeing how the movie features Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. However, there are some shortcomings with this: Your television might screw around abit with the black/white contrast of the movie and on your 5.1 sound system, the music might not stand out as much as it would with headphones. However, while the movie was not primarily designed to be watched on a television, I tried my best to optimize the sound for it and the result is pretty good. I myself watched this movie several times already on my television set. While it has its shortcomings, watching a movie on a big screen on a couch always has another unique element to it.
Decide what option of viewing this movie suits you best.
With no further delay, heres the link! Enjoy!:
Im extremely excited to hear your thoughts on my movie! Feel free to state any sort of criticism!
Download (Thanks to InStarcraft.de):
The downloadable version is superior to the Youtube version in every way. Most notably, it features Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and also has a superior visual resolution, 1440 x 1080p HD to be exact. The movie is in a .m2ts format, which is a variation of the famous MPEG format and should run on most Computers and definately runs on a PS3 (and Blu-Ray players should also support it). The recommended way to watch it is to watch this version with Headphones on the PC, seeing how the movie has been optimized to be viewed in that way, however, the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound was additionally optimized to sound great on a actual 5.1 sound system, so watching it on a PS3 on your big TV is also a very great way to experience this movie!
However, seeing how the file is 6.4 GB big, it can be quite an obstacle to get the file on a PS3. However, it is possible to stream it onto your PS3 over you PC or to burn the file on a disk!
The release date for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is now officially announced: It will be released on the 1.25.2013, which is next Friday!
Additionally to that, I have some further information on the movie and how it will be released for you:
- The movie will have a running time of exactly 60 minutes and 4 seconds.
- The movie will be fully voiced, but will also feature english subtitles.
- The movie will be released on Youtube in 720p with Stereo Sound, additionally to that it will be available for download featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 1440x1080 HD quality. The downloadable version will be playable on a PS3 and should be playable on most other Blu-Ray and DVD players.

As promised, with the release of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm beeing just around the corner, it is time for the release of another trailer. The final theatrical trailer for Starcraft: ROTS will go online this weekend on the 12.23.2012, which is this Sunday. If you liked the Teaser Trailer, I can assure you that this one will blow you away.
On the same day, I will also reveal the running time of the movie.
The full movie will be released in January 2013. I cant give you an exact date yet, however, it will definately be released in January.
Update 12.5.2012
Big news, everybody. While it took much longer then expected, the editing phase of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is finally completed now, infact, it has been completed for almost a month now. Currently im working on putting all the seperate scenes together, then I will be busy with mastering everything to make sure the movie sounds great both on 5.1 speakers and headphones and then rendering the movie. Also, I will do my best to add subtitles. Now, the big question is: Will the movie still come out this year? I cant really answer that, however, it is a possibility. But please understand that these last steps are very important and I dont want to rush the movie in any way. However, if the movie doesnt go online in December, it will definately be released in January next year.
However, what I can say with 100% certainty is that the final trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm will be released this month. Be prepared.
Update 8.16.2012
A few new screencaps, this time protoss themed:
Now that school is at it again, I unfortanly have less time to work on the movie, even though I still try to work on it daily.
As of now, I have alittlebit more than half of the movie editing, including some of the huge action scenes and I honestly have to say, everything comes together awesomely, probably even better than I expected.
Also, through the trailer, I recruited alot of great and talented voice actors to the team which really add to the movie with their outstanding performances. Because a machinima can look as good as it wants - at the end of the day, the machinima will still only look like a machinima. Its the job of the actors to bring that extra depth into the movie.
So, all in all, the movie is turning out amazing, even though it all takes alittle longer than expected.
Update 7.22.2012
Heres a new set of screencaps for you guys:
Currently im hard working on editing the movie as fast, but also as best as I can.
Update 6.23.2012
The time has finally come! The countdown is over and I proudly present you the Teaser Trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm! Im super excited to finally show this to everyone. Have fun! :
Feedback is greatly appreciated!
Update 6.19.2012
Ok everybody, its time!
With the release of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm coming nearer and nearer, it is finally time for the release of new trailers, which will for the first time show off the new animation quality that ROTS has archieved in the last year.
As a celebration of this, I will start alittle event: The new trailer will be released on Saturday, leading up to that, I will release a new screencap from the trailer every day, starting tomorrow. Which means you will get a new screencap on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until the trailer finally hits the internet on Saturday!
Additionally to that, this would be a good time to answer a few frequently asked questions about the movie:
Q: When is the movie going to be released?
A: It should only take 1 or 2 months to get the movie fully edited and all the missing voices recorded.
Q: Whats the running time?
A: Currently unknown, however, I think when finally edited the movie will be around 30 - 70 minutes long.
Q: When can we expect the next trailer?
A: In the next weeks.
Q: Is this related to Heart of the Swarm?
A: No.
Q: Will there be custom animation?
A: While very limited, there will be a few shots that will indeed feature custom animation. Custom animation is used to great effect in this movie and you will actually get a sneak peak at a custom animation shot in the trailer that will be released in the next weeks. Im sure it will blow your mind.
Q: How well does this movie tie in with the actual Starcraft 2 story?
A: In comparison to Starcraft 2, ROTS tells a very "small" story, focusing only on one of many attacks of the zerg around that time period. Seeing how the production on ROTS started in beta before any details about the SC2 story were released, the story of ROTS will be very seperate from the story we have seen in SC2. However, ROTS will not contradict anything we have seen in Starcraft 2.
The movie will begin just before the events of Starcraft 2 and will focus on one of the first full scale attack from the zerg on a terran planet since their four year long disappearance.
Most of the movie will be set on the attacked planet, "Cron II", which is controlled by the Umoja Protectorate, the second biggest Terran faction next to the Dominion. Cron II poses as a tactically important planet for the Protectorate, seeing how the planet is rich with giant mineral fields. However, as a desert planet, Cron II only provides rough living conditions, which causes it beeing populated mainly be miners and the marines to defend them.
Overall, Cron II is not ready to hold off a full scale Zerg attack on their own, so in an desperate act of seeking help, they send out a distress call into space - which is received by the Protoss mothership Tasiis.
Sage Corbin:
Race: Terran
Voice actor: Already Voiced
Sage Corbin is a colonell on the planet Cron II and is in control of the terran forces that protect the mines on the planet. During the broodwar, he defended the planet against zerg and other terran factions.
Zhadun:
Race: Protoss
Voice Actor: Already Voiced
Zhadun is a dark templar which already lived for years on Cron II. He made himself a name among the terrans as the "Protoss from Umoja". Not many know that Zeratul himself send him to this planet, but noone but him knows why.
Shiloh Maltair:
Race: Terran
Voice Actor: Already Voiced
Shiloh is a ghost working for the protectorate that was send directly from Umoja to Cron II to help in defending the planet against the incoming Zerg.
Asuris:
Race: Protoss
Voice Actor: Already Voiced
Asuris is a high templar on the mothership Tasiis which received the distress call of the terrans. He will lead the troops into battle when they finally reach Cron II.
Naoros:
Race: Protoss
Voice Actor: Already voiced
Naoros is in command of the troops on the mothership Tasiis. He, however, is under the command of Asuris.
There is currently no more need for additional voice actors.

I could have probably done some Zerg or Protoss voices for you. Not so confident about my terran voicing.
Jump to about 9:50 for the good stuff.
But you've already seem to have found everything to your liking, so eh. I might be able to do the Ghost. Keyword might. What kind of voice are you looking for?
The time has finally come! The countdown is over and I proudly present you the Teaser Trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm! Im super excited to finally show this to everyone. Have fun! :
Not trying to be a spoil sport, but are you trying to sell (or get donations like Liquid'Rising) this movie? Because it might in fact be against the Terms of Service. Errrr, maybe not Terms of Service, but the official licensing policy of Blizzard. I know I looked into writing a book and submitting my manuscript to Blizzard, but on their very page it says:

No. Blizzard Entertainment® reserves the right to extend and expand our properties to other media. We want to provide a consistent story and universe for our customers, and want to ensure that only the highest quality, officially licensed and approved material is created based on our characters and other creative properties.

Maybe you looked into it already, or maybe this doesn't apply to you, but I just want to make sure you're aware of it. I just really don't want all of this hard work to have been for (essentially) nothing.

Doesnt apply to this project, but thanks for pointing it out, anyways.
Hi! I'd be very interested in doiing some voice acting, even if it's jsut a small thing.
I currently do german voice acting, but not yet on a professional level (which I am aiming for in my career). This would be my first english job and I'd be proud to do this. Just contact me and I can send you some test lines.
Really good looking trailer! Can't wait for the movie...but please take your time in making it, don't want a real hard work get spoiled by a bad ending, do you? ^^

Yeah, I remember that machinima. It was great and im definately trying to archieve its level of quality, even though both movies are barely comparable.
However, I can always keep you in mind for other projects or if the need for more voice actors should arise for some reason, just send me a PM so I dont forget it.

The development has slowed somewhat since schools are back in session. However I'm sure Crainy is working hard on it. He really made this project interesting. Look forward to it~ b'-')b
Indeed, production is still going on and im working as hard on it as I can at the moment. Editing is still going on, but the movie will be finished within the next 2 months.

Actually, no. Most of them have done voice acting in the past before and all of them are very talented and ambitious people - quite frankly, without them, this movie project would never succeed.
Even though the voice acting seems bad and the plot generic, I think the trailer is super impressive considering it's all fan made. I'll probably watch it out of curiosity.

you are someone who is never happy no matter how hard people work to try and bring you good content. I think this is going to be very good and i hope it turns out as well, if not better then the trailer.

Thank you for telling me who I am <3 I've been lost for years.
Looks promising, I'll watch it for sure. I don't often watch machinima, but it can be quite entertaining and something that had so much work put into it about Starcraft is worth a watch.

eh? I agree with jacob, and don't see how that doesn't make him happy? He did say the trailer is "super impressive" aside from a generic plot (generic doesn't mean bad). The voice acting of when the terrans are going to make a last stand is pretty bad vocals/writing. Personally those scenes u need someone getting pumped up and speaking clearly that just kinda seemed muddled and like well guys lets not die even tho we will die if no one helps us O_o.
However, it does hold a lot of potential to be really good especially for something from the Sc2's editor
I know where you are getting at, LimeNade, however, I personally think that the voice acting on that line was expecially well done. It was not really supposed to be a motivational speech, either, but more like an order. The delivery makes sense within the context of the movie.

Well, I dont really think donations are really justified for this project, seeing how this project will benefit in no way from money. My projects in the future might however, so I will considere accepting donations then.
Hopefully this thread gets bumped once its officially released, I'll likely check it out. Congrats on getting the project finished though, quite an endeavor I'm sure.

Thats some passionate work you did there, i followed the project since 2010. Outcome is really nice + DAT EFFORT PUT INTO THIS !!! You got my respect sir.
This is some really good stuff, just finished it. I'm so impressed with the slow downs and the warp in effects, and the entire scope of this project. This was truly amazing.
The only thing I'd say is bad with is that the voice acting was a bit weak, but really that's not much to talk about. This is a fan made project and it was great
Pretty cool movie, thank you for your hard work. Audio was also pretty nice, voice acting was also good except some parts, but not everyone can have a sound studio, right. (Felt the need to add a dustin browder style right here) I also liked the Story pretty solid.
Thank you guys so much for all the positive feedback! There are few things more awesome for me in the world than seeing people liking and enjoying my movies, which I have put my heart and soul into!
Also, if you like it, please share it with your other Starcraft friends!
Edit: And seeing how this is a new page, Ill just post the release text here again, so everyone can see it:

This was surprisingly entertaining and fun to watch, thank you for all your effort and passion that made you do this movie :D If there were 1 thing that I could change it would have been : (watch out spoilers)
Shilon : "What are these ?" Zhadun :" Ancient Protoss weapons from our long forgotten past - THE REAVERS" That would have been so epic seeing them crawl slowly and firing scarabs.
damn Colossus :-p
Thanks again, really enjoyed the story/camera/scene switches, they made for a good watching experience

I loved the intentional blurring in the long-shots, such as when the hellion was driving into base. Great work. The gate to the artifact was beautifully done. Great work on that.
I do wonder about some things, for example the long transitions from one scene to another. Felt like the film could have been 5 minutes shorter without losing anything. But it didn't feel long overall...
But also, why were there so many close-up shots of the ghost's ass?
Im really really glad at how well this movie has been received so far. Like always when releasing a movie, one is not exactly sure what the audience will think of it.
Im really surprised that the story has generally been praised overall and even the voice acting has generally been viewed as pretty good to acceptable, which is really good for a fanmade project, not because I think the voice acting is bad in any way (I really like it, actually), but because audiences are very picky about this kind of thing.
The animation is absolutely fantastic in this movie. You guys deserve all the praise for this wonderful fan made project. Since you asked for feedback, there are a few things to improve on if you guys decide to make more in the future.
You need a better writer. The story wasn't bad but the dialogue could be significantly improved. I don't know if english is your first language since your location is Germany, even though all the dialogue were grammtically correct, they didn't flow and sounded disjointed and forced.
1)Around 6:20 after they introduce themselves, the marine asks the ghost "can we expect more reinforcements?" , ghost says "it is highly unlikely" marine says "why so", ghost explains. You don't need the "why so", because 1)the audience is thinking the same thing so you don't need a character to say it and 2) it slows down the flow of the conversation. You also don't need the ghost to say, I'm a ghost. In story telling it is always better to show than to tell.
2) 7:30-8:30 conversation in protoss ship. Theres a lot to cut out in there. You don't need "Correct, so we are not capable of warping our troops down to them anytime soon", "That should be possible", "Start working on it immediately. As soon as we have a working transmission we can discuss our plan with them". You don't need those lines because they are redundent. The audience already knows.Only explain something if you think the audience will not be able to pick it up.
Anyways thats just really obvious stuff from the first 10min. I hope you don't mind me pointing it out. This is really a great piece of work so please don't think my criticism means I didn't enjoy your movie. All SC2 fans are grateful for your team's wonderful contribution.

Thanks for this criticism and kind words! I am fully aware that the dialogue and overall writing is not the best it could be, however, that will definately change in future productions. I agree with alot of your criticism, even though some of the lines you mentioned were put in because of pacing and atmosphere reasons and not for the purpose of telling the audience something, which I personally think is just as important.
This is an amazing piece of work, hats off to the team for the colossal effort they've made. My only nitpick would've been for the script to reflect more the races from the game, but its still very impressive, particularly as a fan made project.
The animation was fantastic! There were some nice action shots, and the scene with the colossi was very impressive. The music was also pretty good.
For constructive criticism, I found the dialogue and voice acting very weak. My advice is to go play through the protoss missions in broodwar. Note that the protoss not only have a particular voice filter (so they sound like advanced aliens), but also a particular way of speaking that makes them sound different from the Terrans. They sound haughty and powerful. Your voice actors need to emulate this (dont worry, SC2 seems to mess this up too IMO). Also , before the fight, the red marine sounded like he was trying to not shout too loudly, which made the entire scene very difficult to take seriously. As has been pointed out, the dialogue needs a lot of work: if english isn't your first language, look around on TL for a native speaker to make the dialogue less cumbersome. I thought the ghost had the best voice, so it wasn't all bad.
Dont let this criticism depress you though. It's far from perfect, but its incredibly well done. You and your team should be very proud of your work! :D
Husky, beeing awesome as always, just featured a exclusive trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm. Even if you have seen the movie already, this trailer might be worth a look, seeing how it has a completly new narration from IskatuMesk, who also voiced the Immortal and the Marauder (among others) in Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm :
The full 60 minute long movie can ofc be watched here:
Watched the whole thing and it was very cool. I'm even re-watching some of the cooler moments again. Voice acting was weak, but it's a fan movie, that's to be expected. Very good job!
My favorite voice and Character was the Ghost; especially the scene where he fought + Show Spoiler +
The infested Terran
. The voice acting was spotty here and there (mostly in the parts that involved yelling), but compared to most machinimas voice acting it was fantastic.
Just a short note: Additionally to the downloadable version with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound and superior visual resolution which will hit the internet soon, I will also release a commentary track were I gather up some of the voice actors and we have our thoughts on the finished project, reveal some behind the scenes stuff, address your (very valid) criticism and even give an outlook on future projects!
Keep and eye out for that and thanks so much for watching my movie
Pretty impressive work. I really liked most of the action scenes and the lift off and landing of the vehicles.
On the other hand, the voice acting was sub-par, the marine captain was really bad. And there were too much very slow panning shots of the scenery which made the pacing too slow, especially in the beginning. Also extreme zoom in on blurry textures isn't very great to look at. Some times you try to convey emotions by the characters looking at each other, but due to the low res of the models and the marine/ghost wearing helmets it just didn't work for me.
As theater student it was really hard for me to watch because of the voice acting and script was too weak. Good try nonetheless, hoping to see more projects in the future or a remake of the movie.
It was great! Well worth the watch my only complaints being something that's been said a lot already was the captain marines voice and the subtitles. The subtitles had no problem for the most part but has quite a few misspellings littered about. Its nothing major but its a annoyance.
But seriously great job! If you make another movie I will watch it for sure.
Excellent work indeed, I especially enjoyed the part that the prism warps through the matrix. I also like the use of depth perception in the first few scenes, but overall I wish the camera work had more variety. And as others have pointed out, dialogue definitely needs some work on it.
In response to the dialogue comments, the more projects we can create, the more we can dedicate to thing character expansion, expansion of personality types and eventually character development. Think of this as the pilot
It was cool, well done. The community really appriciates it I am sure
The voice of the Ghost was awesome. I kinda want to give voice acting a go myself, please contact me for future projects, it would be fun to audition =)

definently experience plays a huge role in this sort of thing
jsut compare the first season of RvB to the last, the difference is almost unbelievable

That would also be comparing before to after sponsorship and a good bit of money came into the picture which no doubt attributed to the increase production values as well.

im not jsut talking about the production values the voice actors get noticeably better as things go just listen to caboose in season 1 compared to 9
when rVB first started it was pretty much just gags with no story and at the end had a pretty deep story line going through with very 3D characters compared to season 1

Well yeah spanning several seasons and many episodes allows you to do that. Its really hard to make developed personalities through actions for characters inside of an hour's frame. If more get made, it will be much easier for us to make better/bigger products over a period of time and a whole season's worth of plot development.
I can only hope we get to the popularity some of these viral internet shows have achieved so we can start ramping things up.

thas what ive been saying you guys only gonna get better as things go on
considering that this is a fan made machinima (and probably a lot harder to make a machinima of an RTS then something like halo) im honestly amazed it turned out so wellso really looking forward to the future
I can hardly believe its already been a week since Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm has been released. For two and a half years this movie was my pet project and releasing it for everyone to see was quite the experience! It has been a blast, I have been overwhelmed with all the positive feedback and the amout of views and likes the movie got. I honestly didnt expect the movie to get such positive feedback. To my surprise, expecially the story was very well received! Thanks alot, everyone
And yes, there will be more Starcraft 2 machinima content from me in the future! So keep an eye out for that!
As promised, the downloadable version of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is finally ready. Im sorry that its a week late, but its quite difficult to upload a file that big! The file is hosted by the InStarcraft.de, HUGE THANKS TO THOSE GUYS!
Additionally to that, there will be a commentary track out soon were I and some of the voice actors will commentate the movie and give insight into the production, address critisism and even give an outlook on future projects!
Download:
I`d just like to announce that we are currently in pre-production for our next big Starcraft Machinima project! This new project will greatly surpass "Rebirth of the Swarm" in every way and we are trying to set a new milestone in the entire machinima landscape - not just the SC2 one! It is sure to blow your mind!
The download of the 6.4GB version from this site always fails for me at some point. One time it even failed at 99% which is so frustrating. And the site doesn't support download resume. Any chance of having mirror download sites or a torrent?

This is a problem some people seem to have, yet again, the download works fine for others. Sadly, im not sure whats causing this problem, maybe try a different browser. Also, its unfortunately not possible to give mirrors from other download sites or torrents, because for one the file is too large to be uploaded on most sites and setting up a torrent is beyond our ressources.
