I really like that there are so many lesser known players in groups with a few very well known players. Maybe one of these guys can make a name for himself by beating stephano or something.
it's kinda hard to get excited about the first round of group stage like this XD but i'm lookin forward to Sase vs. Bigs and Puma vs. Turuk at least ^^

The best part of DH is that it leaves plenty of room for new players to break into the scene. The worst part is that there's not much reason for a viewer to watch the first group stage.

But that's completely alright imho, there wouldn't be much reason to watch the first two rounds of MLG open brackets either if that's the only thing they broadcasted then.
There's one good match in every group, so they should be able to cast decent games all the time in any case.

No, but thanks to the way MLG is played, they can broadcast high level games while the open bracket is played in the background. Sure, there's some decent games to be played out in this first group stage, but it's not quite the same.
Both have their drawbacks and advantages. but I think an open tournament is better than a seeded one, in the long run.
Kind of losing interest in dreamhack since it's like 90% foreigners, could at least allow a couple players from Korean teams imo. Still love it but it seems like they are winning "less"(As in an easier tournament since there are only few top players). It makes it kind of redundant to watch, because either the good players like Naniwa, Huk, Stephano, and Puma will either dissapoint and lose, or win like they are obviously supposed to on paper. No offense intended, hope u guys know what I mean.

Its an Open tournament. Everyone can sign up for it. The reason why so few is signing up is cause they have to pay for the trip and hotel by themselves, just like everyone else at Dreamhack.

I dont really understand. If you would invite all the top Korean's (who we see in all other major tournaments) then it's not redundant? And how is that different from guys like Stephano,Naniwa,Sase etc? It's the same story, if they lose its a upset cause they should win on paper.

Wow thats a lot of groups o.o Although most of the big names are probably not going to get knocked out (for the most part), I feel like this takes away from the excitement/drama of LANs

Keep watching ur MLG or GSL then. DH is the only tourny which isnt 95% korean, which to me, makes it much more interesting. You know, I actually want to see players from our foreign scene dish it out, players that don't play in many top-tier events and get much chances to prove themselves.
In fact, there already are koreans in this DH: JYP, Hero, Vampire, Keen, Puma, Moon, and more. Thats already pretty sizeable, and imo, that's an ok ratio to have for a foreign event.
While this format is probably better for the players, it's not as exciting for the viewers. I probably won't even be watching any games from the first day =(.

Unless this one is 3 days, they do both group stages in one day. The second groups should have some good games.
No sugar coating just because you're famous, thats what I love.
We dont HAVE TO watch all games the first day after all, its just so damn awesome that anyonec an try to win vs. Naniwa, Stephano, Keen, SaSe, puma......etc!
Good luck to all, see you on the final day :D DREAMHACK, NANIWA, SASE AND SWEDEN FIGHTINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

ZyktoMini, a european, as far as i know. top master - mid gm zerg, somewhere around there.
Looks awesome, personally i like the amateurs with the pros in groups, love watching the underdogs try to make a name for themselves by beating the big pro's. Something i'd like to see more of, really enjoying TSL4 cause of that
The idea of amateurs and pros is really awesome, though it feels like pros crushing amateurs would be meh (provided it's a rape and not competitive at all) and an upset would make people sad. Still, awesome idea and looking forward to this DH as well :D

Not sure how that poster simply stating a fact is facepalm-worthy. He didn't imply at all that he was confused about why there are a lot of Swedes, he was merely reporting precisely how many there actually are.
I usually love DH, but their fields are just dropping so far behind many other tournaments in terms of player quality that its kinda hard to get excited about this.
Looks very Zerg heavy... which is fine by me. The winner is hard to call, but I think I can safely predict Stephano getting far and a Korean Terran losing to Goody. :D
Nice, there doesn't seem to be a big group of death, but it's only the first stage I'm really happy to see dragon, he really has a chance of going far, and after what we saw from him on TSL4 Qualifiers, i think i can do well here.
This sounds so good I've always liked DreamHack events and this looks like no exception, the player line up looks awesome, I cant wait to watch some more WhiteRa, Thorzain and Ret games :D. As for the a winner I'd probably bet on Stephano but I'm also hoping for some major upsets in this tourny!
9 Koreans are more then enough. DH is the place if you want to see the foreign talent duke it out with a good amount of Koreans in it to make it more interesting. Besides any Korean can attend, the just to dont choose to since they dont get seeded/payed for it.
MLG on the other hand is more like a few European pros going up against the swarming amount of Koreans. Last time there was about 10 Europeans attending MLG, out of those 10 was the 5 highest placing foreigners. So we had 10 europeans fighting against 40 pro Koreans and then an american scene which got obliterated in the middle of this. This is an effect of 1, Koreans get paid/seeded to get in, 2 american scene is dropping far behind and 3 that the risc/reward relation for European players is just to bad for it to make any sense to attend.
Eventually most high level Europeans that does attend MLG will eventually get knocked out as a result of a small fraction of Europeans fighting against an ever increasing amount of Korean players. MLG will the turn into a speed version of GSL, with the difference that it will start with some refreshing stomping of the american scene. I dont think this will be particularly entertaining and I actually dont think MLG will let it get to this point, because it will decrease the amount of viewers and hurt MLG as an organization.
But if you prefer this I guess you can skip DH and hope for even more Koreans to join MLG next time.

Dreamhack is and has always been a computer festival for the public, the competitions they host (and there are tons of them and just not gaming) are suppose to be open for the public, anyone who wants to has a chance to attend. Stop comparing DH with MLG, they are two completely different events. DH is not suppose to have top stacked players only, it's not that kind of event, period.
Additionally are there at least 5-10 players that have strong online results which might have breakout tournaments like, Vampire, Daisy, Titan, Bigs, Fraer, Bly, Snute, Nightend and Forsen for instance.
I most say I am a bit curios, exaclty which are the 10 interesting players?
So the even last 4 days. Using my math total 336 series will be played. By 128 players. With minimum 3 series and maximum of 13 series for each player.

I wonder if that's a deliberate business decision by MLG. I can almost guarantee that the fall championship will be played out the weekend before DHW. That's not the only reason a lot of Koreans don't come to DH though. MLG pays for the trip for everyone seeded into groups, which makes it easier for Korean teams' finances.
Stage 1 shouldn't be much issue for a lot of the players, i'm still hoping for some crazy upset or a break out play from some relatively unknown players!
Not so excited about this player field tbh. You guys whining about to many koreans at tournaments may like this one tho. I guess I will catch HerO and TaeJa's games but I think thats it. Hope HerO can take this DH aswell. ggl

Last DH had way too many maps and everyone complained, I'm glad to see they listened.
DH probably has the best venue out of all events, my favourite caster (Apollo) and the best hosts I've seen (incontrol). The only downsides are the topheavy prizepool (for these smaller events, not for the big finale event) which demotivates quite a lot of pros from attending, and the single-elimination playoffs bracket (though having double elimination would be asking waaay too much for a 128-player schedule like this.)
I'll be cheering for MorroW for this event. I hope starts doing well again, it seems as though he's been on a slump for the past few months, despite his stay in Korea
PS: Goody and Moon won't make it (((( Apparently monchi wanted to attend but it was sold out.
I don't like it that people keep on saying that DH should get more Koreans. It's up to the Koreans to get to DH - it's an open tournament, and anyone can fly to Stockholm and rent a hotel. In my humble opinion, some Koreans are getting too comfortable with easy money from MLGs (no risk, high reward) since MLG pays all their expenses, while Europeans who qualify for the event can't make it because it's too expensive.
I'd like for DH to go a step further and invite more top Koreans in their future tournaments. I feel DH is the most prestigious European tournament out there so it makes sense for them to go to the next level. The majority of people want to see the highest levels of play no matter what the nationality of the players have.

It's an open tournament, anyone can join. The big DH tournament is the Winter one, where they will invite the top players from Summer, Valencia and Stockholm Open
This line up is laughable compared to MLG. I understand Dreamhack wants to be "fair" to everyone and not pay for some people to come and not for others, but it is a very stupid philosophy from an entertainment perspective.

I agree. I don't get excited for dreamhacks due to the lack of top koreans. The last dreamhack had one of the worst lineup I've seen in a long time, not only due to lack of koreans, but barely any top foreign pros attended too. I read socke doesn't attend cause only top 4 get money, so he doesn't feel it's worth it.
I remember watching some dreamhacks last year as those seemed to get some good koreans, I think. However, the player quality has dropped a lot this year. I may watch the finals depending on who is in it, but as a tournament, dreamhack isn't very interesting to me.

while its true that the player field could be a bit better, european tournaments dont need 15 koreans to have top notch players around like MLG.

That's true but where are Grubby, Feast, Socke, Lucifron, Kas? I'm sure I'm forgetting some others. There are a decent number of top Europeans missing. Combine that with the fact that the tourney is light on Koreans, and completely void of top-end Koreans, it makes for a pretty lackluster field, especially relative to the prestige that is associated with the Dreamhack name.
Just goes to show that the names don't make the tournaments. The competition is stiff, there's several code-S player as well as the best foreigners and that includes world class players. Not everyone can participate in every tournament. The last dreamhack had, for my money, the most memorable moment so far this year in SC2 regardless of it having an arguably weaker lineup

Lucifron has exams afaik, Socke is tired and not in good enough shape after two big events in one week and traveling so much, Feast is also busy with school if I remember correctly, Grubby qualified for StarsWar in China and is playing there this weekend. Kas, I don't know.
I'll still enjoy DreamHack, because there are a lot of players I'm excited about, and many of those are attending. It's not a second GSL, but that's not what Dreamhack aspires to be. They stay true to themselves, make a good show out of it and I like it that way.
Also, it's always interesting for me to see how the European players stack up against the Koreans, what their current skill level is like and how they rank among themselves.
Might or might not be the same way for you Americans in your "domestic" events, I don't know.
The only thing that annoys me about Dreamhack still (last year I didn't like that they weren't open tournaments) is the prize distribution. We've had one progamer come out and say that only top 4 getting money was the reason he didn't attend (Socke), how many others would this be true for? It seems such a weird thing to do.
Other than that. SOOO EXCITED. For everyone who says there not that thrilled by the player pool, at least tune in for the Ro4 or the finals, the production, crowd and at that point the games will be amazing, I guarantee it.
Is there a Korean in this topic that can translate the following for me to Korean? "Warp Prism Harass!" I really want HerO to sign that on my keyboard but I couldn't make it clear for him the last time.

Totally agree - we have lots of big tournaments with full Korean lineups (GSL, MLG Arenas/Championships, IPL). Dreamhack doesn't exclude Koreans, just has a broader mix. The proof is how Dreamhack is received after the event has ended - the last event had a really incredible finish with Thorzain beating Polt in front of a great and loud crowd, and Winter had the hockey stadium that went to the last game.
Well, at dreamhack will be 2 quarter-finalists and a semi-finalist from last seasons GSL and 4-6 from the MLG championship, so lets not pretend like MLG is somehow miles better.
This whole "Dreamhack is bad because they don't invite the top players only!!" argument is getting old.
Do you want the hardcore tournament? go watch GSL, they have to seed people like Stephano into Code S because Code A is too damn hard to go through. Want medium/semi hard tournamens? check out MLG/Blizzcon. Want an open ended tournament that allows anyone to sign up and get a chance to compete against the pros? Then watch Dreamhack.

While they have a lot of focus on SC2, remember that DH is about the LAN event and LOTS of other tournaments. I agree that it's sad that they don't pay for the top players to show up, but DH is so much more than just SC2. To give you some perspective, these are the other tournaments they host:
Slightly more than 200k USD in prize money for all tournaments + an additional 40k USD for the swedish nationals. SC2 accounts for 12,5% of the total prize pool for the event. I think they compensate the players in some form for the invitationals, but don't quote me on that
From Fnatic:We have some bad news on top of the good ones. Our Protoss star, Silviu "NightEnD" Lazar will be unable to attend the upcoming Dreamhack Summer tournament.

I actually like that Dreamhack doesnt pretend to be another MLG with all the korean superstars. If i want to see the very best koreans i would rather watch GSL.
So what you're trying to say is that you like Dreamhack being a "pro foreign" tournament where there is really only a handful of "pro" players even attending? Dreamhack to me is just a proving ground for amateurs. I really don't want diamond/master level players duking it out with players that are incredibly better then they are.
Enjoy your amateurs getting destroyed in group stages. I'd rather just watch the couple top level players that are going to make the semi finals. I find no entertainment in bad play.

A handful? You must have some freakish large hands then cause there are a lot of pro's attending. You sound like only amateurs are attending or something, after the first group stage we will see a lot of good players play against each other. Yes the first day wont be full with great matches, so?
Watch the recap from day1 and tune in for the next days/stages. Why whine about matches you dont have to watch? Or even better, dont watch at all.
DH obviously does not aim to be another korean stacked tournament which is good. a tournament has to position itself on the market like product nowadays. why be number 4 after GSL/MLG/IPL in terms of korean superstars and prize pool? sure the level of gameplay at group stage is not comparable to a GSL ro32, I like to watch DH nonetheless, its a bit different, so thats good!
differentiation and variety in the tournament scene is definitely better than to focus to be the same like the others. in the long term, the whole scene will grow better due to distinguished production approaches.

There is like 40 "pro players" going to play in DH. I wouldnt call it handful.
You discredit a tournament because there is some unknown players attending? I can say exaclty the same about open bracket in MLG. Its funny u say about skill gap when in MLG its even worse.
And its also funny most of the people complaining is either American or Australian, I understand you have no one decent to cheer for from your country, so you want koreans to play - watch MLG instead.

America is far more successful at this game than Poland.
Thirty-two groups? Hot damn that is a lot. I didn't even bother to watch the last dreamhack due to the lackluster roster, but this looks like an improvement.

What does the success-level in sc2 compared between Poland and "America" have to do with anything? Did you not read his comment?

Successful? Maybe, depends how you look at it but Mana, Nerchio, Diestar, Tefel vs Idra, Sheth, Illusion, Vibe or?.... i would put my money on Poland there atm. Not that it matters, he doesn't claim Poland is better or what ever so i dont really get your point.

No one is forcing you to watch this Again some people doesn't seem to understand how Dreamhack is operating.
Dreamhack is a computer/digital festival, Its purpose is to provide entertainment in which the public is encouraged to take a part of the events which includes the various competitions. The participation from the visitors at the festival is a core element of Dreamhack. This is what the sponsors expects and the reason why Dreamhack exists. The upcomers/locals/ semi pro/ novelties are just just as important as the "superstars". And again, if you don't like it then simply don't watch it.

And still the top 3 from Poland (Nerchio, MaNa and DieStar) would beat the top 3 from US of A.

Or... You can choose only to watch the final day when all the amateurs have been eliminated (hopefully not). Again none is forcing you to watch.
OMAGAD, these amateurs are in this tournament and i have to watch them? Why? Why do they have to have a tournament to go to and be e-famous for a second? Why? Why dont they just do like MLG and... pretty much every fucking tournament out there, providing the same players. Resuting in the same finals and giving money to the same people. Why dont they do that? Why do Dreamhack have to have a open tournament? Whats that BTW? NVM it sucks!! ... STFU
