**Suppprts OBS** **Supports FFsplit** Hey guys, I made something for you.
A few weeks ago, I took a few hours out of my day and coded a simple app to help xsplit display your currently playing song, no matter what you're using to listen to music.
So, without further adieu, here it is!
**2/17/2013 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- Added spaces before and after text to distinguish when it loops.
Previous changes: + Show Spoiler +**1/27/2013 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- Added a preferences.txt file. Will remember your last used name.
- Also added the ability to start minimized.
- If you want the program to start when you log into windows, you have to do that manually by adding the jar to window's startup manager.
**12/4/2012 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- Non-essential update. Added the ability to start up with your name already listed.
**11/29/2012 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +**11/9/2012 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- App will now work with the Open Broadcast Software
- Fixed an encoding error. Foreign characters will now display properly.
**11/1/2012 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- App will now show appropriate error messages when something goes wrong.
- Removed the "set username" button, you can set your username by hitting enter now.
**10/31/2012 UPDATE** + Show Spoiler +- App now minimizes to tray when minimized.
- You can no longer open more than one instance of the app at a time.
Things you need:
- A last.fm account.
Wait, what? Why do I need last.fm? + Show Spoiler +Last.fm is acting as an intermediate, allowing the program to work with as many programs as possible. By accessing last.fm's scrobbling feature, I can pull the currently playing song from any user, regardless of what they're using to listen to it.
- A music player/streaming website. (Grooveshark, etc)
- XSplit
- The program
Video instructions: + Show Spoiler +
Text inctructions: + Show Spoiler +- Sign up for last.fm if you don't have an account.
- Connect your service to last.fm.
+ Show Spoiler +
- Start my program
- Input your last.fm username
- Locate the "CurrentSong.txt" file, which should be within the same folder as the program.
+ Show Spoiler +If you can't find "CurrentSong.txt", simply play a new song in your service. The file will appear
- Open xsplit
- Add a new title
- Enable remote text (Bottom section)
- Add the address of the text file to the URL text field.
- Remove the start and end tags
- Adjust other settings to your liking
- You're done!
Problems? + Show Spoiler +- "No songs found on USER_NAME"
+ Show Spoiler +you need to set your privacy options on Last.fm so that 'Hide real-time listening information' isn't ticked.
- "Could not find the main class: MainScreen. Program will exit."
+ Show Spoiler +You'll need to update Java. The current version is version 7 update 9
- Error: "user" not found.
+ Show Spoiler +Make sure you typed your username correctly. Otherwise, check your firewall settings.
- CurrentSong.txt is located in System32, regardless of plugin.jar location.
+ Show Spoiler +You have 32 bit java installed, and 64. Uninstall one
Souce code: + Show Spoiler +

Does this work with Open Broadcaster Software as well? I'd like to try it out.

I'm not familar with it, however the program utilizes xsplit's remote text function, so if OBS doesn't have that, then it wouldn't work.

I downloaded OBS to root around, and it looks like you can grab text from a file, so it might work.
Looks like OBS won't display text at the moment, and will be fixed with the next version, but it looks like it may work!

brilliant decision using last.fm. If it was coded for itunes and winamp/foobar/etc were all incompatible I would have barfed.
|
please make it compatible with foobar and OBS! :D

Is there a specific place I should be saving the plugin.jar program?? I'm getting an error saying "Could not find the main class: MainScreen. Program will exit."

I believe you need to update java!

After some quick googling, it looks like you can attach foobar2000 to last.fm through a plugin, though I'm pretty sure foobar2000 supports output to a textfile by itself.
http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_audioscrobbler
As for OBS, I believe it should work with OBS' text source function.

What I had to do was increase the fontsize to something like 20 just to get it to show up. I think the issue is that the font is down-scaled to the preview window, thus making it hard to see. In anyway, this program should work with OBS, as I've been using a Chrome extension for Pandora to display my song information.
XML support for text in OBS would be great, though.

The maker of OBS said the text not appearing was a bug that would be fixed in the next version. Should be fixed in a couple days, he said.

Could you make it so Minimizing it, allows it to Minimize to the System Tray?
That would be a great feature, since my stream is already cluttered with Windows in the Task Bar.
Thanks, and Great Program! Works perfectly with Grooveshark!

Alright, added minimize to tray support. You also can't open more than one instance of the program. Source code has also been updated.

It'll ask you if you want to allow java to access the internet. The app doesn't actually access the internet, just localhost (To see if there's already an app running).
Holy crap, thank you! That was super quick!
5/5 would download again

When I double click on the plugin.jar I get "Could not find the main class: MainScreen. Program will exit."
edit: didn't fully read through the op, see I need to update. Sorry about that.

I'm trying it now and I'm finding a problem.
The plugin doesn't seem to be able to detect my username correctly.
Error: Invalid - username.
I double checked with my profile. checked with caps and without and still having the same issue. Please help thanks.

Can you send me your last.fm username, please?
The only reason I can think of would be not having any recently played tracks on your profile. I can probably do a check for that to display the appropriate error. Will make hitting enter submit the username too...

Well, I can't see any abnormalities in your profile, and it's working for me.
Did you allow the java applet access the the internet? (Would have been a popup when you started it for the first time) If you didn't, that would prompt the not found error.

I'll try and recheck the firewalls then. Will edit any changes.
EDIT: Yes. It's working and its a firewall issue as it works when I disabled the firewall.
The security level for the firewall was too high. Thanks for the help.

Hey, thanks!
I wouldn't be totally opposed to a stream link either. I like seeing my work get used.

Hey I tried using this and it works for the most part except for a little problem. A lot of my songs use Japanese text, so when xsplit reads the file, it doesn't display the characters correctly because the .txt is encoded as ansi instead of unicode. I already tested that re-encoding the file fixes the problem, but the program will re-encode it back to ansi upon updating the song. Can you make it so that the .txt file is encoded using unicode/UTF-8?

I have found one problem, looked at the source code and found the solution as well.
I don't know for XSplit but for OBS it won't show the text you generate because the RRS feed you are retrieving from is using a strange version of the hyphen and that will cause OBS to not show the whole text at all. I just replaced the hyphen in your Plugin.writeToFile() method to this and it works without a problem:
+ Show Spoiler + public void writeToFile(String string) { String fullArtistAndSong; if (string.contains("–")) { String[] artistAndSong = string .split("[-֊־᐀᠆‐-―⁓⁻₋−⸗⸚⸺-〜〰゠︱︲﹘﹣－]"); char delimiter = '-'; String artist = artistAndSong[0].trim(); String song = artistAndSong[1].trim(); fullArtistAndSong = artist + " " + delimiter + " " + song; } else { fullArtistAndSong = string; } try { FileWriter fs = new FileWriter("currentsong.txt"); BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fs); out.write(fullArtistAndSong); out.close(); } catch (Exception e) {
} }
I hope I could help and thanks for the awesome software
Edit: Sorry I have no idea to format the text properly...
Edit2: If OP is okay with it I could upload a working version of this for OBS

I noticed the weird version of the hyphen when I made it, didn't think it would break OBS. I need to fix some other things in the output as well, so I'll implement your fix while I'm in there, thanks.
EDIT: I fixed both the encoding issue, and the hyphen issue. Thanks for the reports/help.
EDIT2: seems to be working fine with OBS.

Okay so this works pretty much perfectly except I can only assume I'm cursed and the program hates me as the only word it does not work with is 水樹奈々 who comprises like half or more of my playlist. Apparently the program doesn't like the character 々 and gets confused and just cuts everything off so it only writes out "水樹奈 -" in the notepad file, which is sacrilege as far as I'm concerned. I tested this with other variations, and sure enough, if 々 is written, it and everything after it gets cut off completely. Any text that does not contain 々 will work fine =/
I suspect this is the result of the hyphen fix (or whatever else you may have changed) as it was being displayed perfectly fine in notepad previously, and I don't see why merely encoding it differently would cut text off (it would more likely display unrecognizable characters, at worst). Personally, I wouldn't mind if you just gave me a version that excluded the output coding changes but retained the encoding fix, assuming that solves my problem.

Sure, I'll work it out.
You should be hitting the "enter" key after entering your last.fm username. Sounds like you're not.

It will show me the song that I'm playing on your program, and if I open the text file it says the song that is playing as well. It is only when I'm trying to show it in the text source that it won't show up.

Yup, I just made the video. OBS is a bit weird with text.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gAk7DOIJKA&feature=youtu.be
Basically, OBS messes up the text with small sizes. You just crank the size, then edit the size of it with "edit scene". Also make sure the color is visible on the background ^^.

I'd like to thank you, not just for this plugin, but because this thread allowed me to find out about Open Broadcaster, which is AMAZING. I just uninstalled XSplit and FFSplit because I don't plan on using either of them ever again now that I have OBS.

Yea, OBS is pretty good. I was pretty happy to find out it had a remote text feature too ^.^

Im having a little trouble trying to get this to work, im trying to use this with OBS but it seems that the CurrentSong.txt file is appearing in my System32 folder for some reason and OBS doesn't recognize it when it's in that folder, if I move it to my desktop is has no problem finding it but then it will no longer update and will instead just create another file in the system32.

I have no idea why it's doing that. The way java works is it defaults to the folder that the program is being executed in unless otherwise specified. In any case, you can just point xsplit/obs towards the currentsong.txt inside the System32 folder.

That's part of what makes it really strange though is that it doesn't seem to recognize it inside the system32 folder, it can see other text documents in there and if i move the file it's fine but it just doesn't seem to find it in the folder. I'll report back if i can find something.

Yea, redownload.
I'm not sure why it would do that O.o It takes ~5 seconds to update at the start of a new song, other than that, it just pulls from the text file, which is really just last.fm.

That's part of what makes it really strange though is that it doesn't seem to recognize it inside the system32 folder, it can see other text documents in there and if i move the file it's fine but it just doesn't seem to find it in the folder. I'll report back if i can find something. I'll do some testing and get back to you.
It seems I've found the solution, I had two versions of the most recent java installed(the 32 and 64 bit versions) and after removing the 32bit version the problem was solved.

Thanks for the great program and excellent instructions! ♥

I added something for myself to use, figure I'd update the public version too.
You can now add your name to the end of a shortcut target to make it automatically open with your name included. You can also put this shortcut in the start up folder so it auto starts when windows loads.

Noticed that this doesn't show any message if for whatever reason the scrobbler can't display song info (Missing ID3 tags, etc.) and also doesn't update for when there is no song playing.
Otherwise works great

It just pulls the song from the user's RSS feed, so I have no way to check if it's actually playing or not.

Hey Cereal,
I followed your guide for OBS, and your plugin isn't able to find my username (http://www.last.fm/user/lanceaeby). I had 2 versions of Java, removed both and installed the most up to date one, and still no-go. I allowed your plugin on both private and public networks too. Is there something I need to check for in Windows Firewall?
Any help is appreciated, I really want to use this awesome program! Thanks for writing it

Works for me. (Structures - Hydroplaning).
It'd have to be your firewall. You should have javaw.exe and java.exe allowed through the firewall.
|
Made sure javaw.exe and java.exe are both allowed on both Private and Public networks (in folder jre7), still not working . Does it matter where I saved your plugin? I have the plugin saved on a separate internal drive, while Java is installed on my C drive.

You could try moving the jar to the default drive. Not sure why that would make a difference, but I have no other ideas.

Click on "Add new", then "Text", then fill in the location of CurrentSong.txt in the source box.

Hey, great piece of software you've come up with here. However, i'm using grooveshark for my music source & xsplit as my scene editor. When i input the remote url, and remove the start & end tags, no text shows. i've checked if the source is correct, restarted xsplit etc. The source box comes up, just no text appears. Thanks for putting time into this little plugin.

Yes, It's in a folder on my desktop called "music ticker", along with the plugin.jar itself.

Stick "CurrentSong.txt" to the end of your remote URL (Without quotes) and you'll be good to go.

On January 07 2013 11:57 PiQLiQ wrote: Just wondering if ffsplit/xsplit is still popular now when OpenBroadcaster is out?
Some people prefer ffsplit to OBS due to performance.
I still use xsplit because I've had issues where OBS will switch scenes without prompting, along with some things being resized in my scene unintentionally.

Just wanted to say that I am now using this application. Checked out the source and it's well done.
Hooked Grooveshark and Foobar into LastFM so I can use multiple sources for music without changing my stream.
Thanks a lot!

Hey InfCereal,
Thanks for this software. I have a little problem though and hope you can help me out =)
When I use the Song Grabber it gives the Error: No songs found on "BronzeBas". I am using Foobar with the Last.fm Scrobbler and I can see the real-time changes being made on Last.fm while listening, but the Song Grabber just keeps on displaying the same error.
edit: Nevermind, found the problem. For future readers, and maybe add it to the F.A.Q., you need to set your privacy options on Last.fm so that 'Hide real-time listening information' isn't ticked.
Programs works great now! Thanks!

It's a java program, you should be able to double click it to open it. (Assuming you have java installed).

This weekend. Sorry it's so delayed, I've been busy lately with school, starcraft, girlfriend and trying to understand the MMR-Stats source. I should have just done it when you asked, sorry about that.
I'm just going to add a prefs file that will store your username, and if you want the app to start on start up, and the ability to start minimized.

Awesome! Looking forward to it!

I'm getting the "Error: No songs found on "USER_NAME" error that has been mentioned. My privacy settings for last.fm are set up properly, and the Last.fm scrobbler properly shows the song that I'm playing in Spotify. I've toyed around with completely disabling my firewall with no success.

What's your last.fm username?

|
|
Very strange, I've got the last.fm scrobbler desktop app up and it's properly updating as I play a song.
edit: As a test I typed in your user name and your last song came up, seems to be a problem with my songs properly making it to last.fm.
|
Make sure you have your account set up correctly on the scrobblr, and make sure you actually enable scrobbling
|
Holy shit, finally figured it out after spending more time than I should have on this. I'm using Spotify and always use "Private Session" when listening to music. Doing this doesn't block the song from showing up in the last.fm scrobbler but does stop it from pushing to your last.fm profile.
Thanks for the program.
|
Finally got around to updating it.
You now have the option to start the program minimized to the tray. The program will now remember the last username you used. I fixed the buggy error messages.
If you want the program to run on startup, you can add the jar to window's startup manager manually
Sorry it took so long.

Hey, awesome program but i´m having a few problems with it (using obs but that shouldnt matter in this case). Its a bit hard to explain for me but basically when using scrolling text whenever a title gets longer the artist and title get closer together. Like "Artist - TitleArtist -TitleArtist - Title" instead of "Artist - Title Artist - Title" etc. Would it be possible to add a fixed space behind the end of one row? Here is a screen of what im talking about, notice that after the "OCR Radio" it starts over again but starts right next to the "Radio"
With even longer titles the space is completely gone and it just puts it completely together.

thank you

I haven't seen this before. I'll see if I can recreate it, it might be an obs thing.
EDIT: I can't recreate it, but I'll add the space at the end. Should make it look better anyway.
Ookay, all good to go.

I was so very happy to have found this program, and started praising it before I even had it downloaded. Alas, I'm having problems with it. I've looked quite thoroughly for a solution before posting here, so I hope you can help me.
First off, I'm playing music straight from lastfm for simplicity. No scrobbling here. My issue is this, the current song text only changes to my current song for a few moments before reverting to the previously played track.

Okay, WMP requires Last.fm's scrobblr to be installed.
Do you have last.fm app running? (You can get it from here: http://www.last.fm/download)
If that's installed and running, it will send the information from WMP to last.fm, where my plugin will pick it up so you can use it.

It's so you don't have to enter your username every time you start the program. The two falses are for run at startup and start minimized. Run at startup doesn't work, so there's no option in the gui, but the start minimized is a checkbox below the username input.
I'm at a loss as to why it's not working for you. Are the songs actually showing up on your last.fm profile when you scrobble them?
|
well, yeah. it shows up on the website too.
|
On April 05 2013 23:07 Demselflyed wrote: well, yeah. it shows up on the website too.
I don't know what to tell you. The program itself only pulls text from the RSS feed and puts it in a text file. It's very straight forward and there isn't a lot of room for errors. The fact that it works once, then never works again is baffling.
|
i think i found the problem... my last.fm profile does not update the songs im currently playing, and i have to refresh it so that it updates. so it effected my RSS feed. but even though i refreshed and my RSS feed is updated to the currently played song, the plugin doesn't.
EDIT : i think im good now. it seems that songs without artist screwed things up. EDIT 2 : alright, sorry. the plugin stopped updating again.

._.
Can you go through your songs while watching your last.fm profile (the website) and point out anything that specifically doesn't show up?
The only thing I can think of is either last.fm isn't recording some songs correctly, or something's going wrong with the encoding on my end.
|
Hey there, I made an account specifically to respond. I'm loving your application, but I'm having a similar problem, where the text displayed is correct, but about 30 seconds into a new song, it switches to the previously played song's text. I'm not using any media player, no scrobbling, just last.fm.
I've watched the RSS feed, and it's actually very strange. There were instances where the feed would not update for every song, usually every 2 songs played. There were also times when the feed would be accurate, with the currently playing song at the top of the feed, but the text would still say the previous song.
Just wanted to give you this feedback and hopefully we can diagnose the problem here.

Hi, thanks for the feedback.
I've noticed some strange things like that before as well, though I thought I fixed them. I'll go look at it again. One of the strangest things I ever saw while debugging, was the RSS feed being several songs behind, but the plugin being correct. Probably the cache messing with my mind.

Plugin.7Z is a compressed folder. Extract it to the directory of your choice and go from there.

When i download from the dropbox i only get one file, as opposed to the folder of 3 files in the video. That one file is labeled "Plugin.7Z" and if i click it it just launches spotify and i can't enter in my Last.fm username in it anywhere. Any help? I can't find the currentsong.txt anywhere. When i download the dropbox the aforementioned file goes into my downloads folder, can't find any of the other stuff though there. Plugin.7Z is a compressed folder. Extract it to the directory of your choice and go from there.
Ah ok, i just didn't have any software to open .7Z files but i got one and now it works, tyvm.

It should be in the same folder as the .jar file. If it's not, you can look in your System32 folder, as some people have reported it showing up there. If it IS there, it's because you have 32 bit java installed. Installing 64 bit java will fix the problem.

EDIT : i think im good now. it seems that songs without artist screwed things up. EDIT 2 : alright, sorry. the plugin stopped updating again.

could this work for di.fm or rdio.com?

I made it for use with rdio, so it will work with it. I'm not sure about di.fm. Usually, if it will scrobble, it will work.

When i open the plugin and have Windows Media Player Open and play a few songs it still gives me the No songs found on "xXNeonWarriorXx" error. Is this compatable with Windows Media Player or am i missing something?

I can't find my CurrentSong.txt file, I have been looking in the folder where I added the plugin, as well as in the System32 folder as intructed above. I tried to check if I had both 32bit and 64bit Java, but I am not sure how to do this. I checked it in the list of software that can be uninstalled from "ControlPanel - Uninstall Software", I had one listed as "Java 7 Update 45" and another "Java 7 Update 45 (64-bit)". I uninstalled the first of those. I have been playing music from spotify with the Song Grabber plugin open and Spotify checked "Scobble to Last.fm" with my username/pw and the Song Grabber is telling me what song I am currently playing. This last part tells me that the "CurrentSong.txt" file should exist, but I can't find it. I would love some help! Other then that the plugin seems pretty nice, I just need to get it working.
I almost forgot to ask! inside the System32 folder, is there a new folder with the .txt file?

Regarding the last question, I'm not sure. I've never encountered the problem myself. I don't think it would be, though.
The only problem reported here was the file ending up in the System32 folder, so I'm not entirely sure where else it would be.
I'm assuming that the Preferences.txt is also missing?

You'd have to set up windows media player to scrobble to last.fm. You'd have to research how to do that yourself, I don't know right off hand.

I'm having the same issue. After checking the entirety of my System32 folder, and the location I saved the plugin, both the CurrentSong.txt and Preferences.txt files are nowhere to be found. The program itself works fine and shows which song is being played when active, though. Playing songs from foobar, being scrobbled through last.fm.

Try running the program as administrator, or creating the files yourself.

Tried creating the text files with the proper names in the folder. The plugin didn't read them. Tried running as an admin, and it didn't help.

Alright, I have class for the next few hours, but when I get back, I'll look at the source and add in more error messages, then we can try this again.

This time, nothing popped up when I tried to run it with Java.

._.
Well, I've just tested it on two computers and a mac, all with success.
Which version of java do you have installed, and is it the latest version?

I have Java 7, and I updated it after the first attempt failed to see if that was the problem. I'll check to see if it's 64 or 32 bit, and try the other type to see if that fixes it.

Okay, I changed versions, uninstalled the other, made double sure it was all up-to-date, and the program now runs. It also notices the preferences text file and loads my last.fm profile accordingly, though I had to create it myself when it didn't after two launches.
CurrentSong is still missing, and it doesn't write to the text file I created with the same name.

Are you still running as administrator?
Sounds like it's just having issues reading and writing, which sounds like a permissions problem. However, it's not showing any errors, so I'm not entirely sure...

The permissions have it available to be edited by any user, too.
Edit: I decided to try and install the new .jar again. This time, the files somehow turned up in my System 32 folder in this latest reinstall, despite my having... no remnants of Java 32 on my computer at all. Not sure what's causing that, but it works entirely now if I go through and have OBS read that one. Seems like a funny issue.
Second edit: Scratch that, I got ahead of myself. Can't even be found by OBS, but the text file updates and works.

Please excuse the bump
This program no longer works. Not sure if it is a Last.fm thing or what but this program is now outdated. Shame, as it worked soo well.

Go for the firefox add-on "Untamed now playing", it works with basically any webpage you'd ever use. spotify, last.fm, youtube, grooveshark, pandora.. it has like 30-50 webpages on the list.
It writes the current song name to a file, which you can read with OBS/Xsplit and show on stream.
