Edit: Rough translation pieced together from internet translators:
Jeon Byeong-heon of the Democratic Party Unity in Korea was elected as the next chairman of the Korea Republic E-Sports Association in Seoul on May 24 at the Lotte Hotel, Sogong-dong, and held a board meeting. The South Korean politician demonstrates a revival of interest in the 10 years of the history of e-sports. This is the first time a politician has been elected to such a position. The new president officiated at the University Graduate School of Economics, was a Presidential Secretary (?), and spent time at the Government Information Agency as Deputy Chief Secretary. He spent three terms in the National Assembly (?) and seeks to promote a healthy lifestyle encompassing the promotion of e-sports and an increase in government expenditure for esports (!). In regards to the match-fixing scandal of 2010, he said that the Players Association should lead the way by shouldering responsibility and criticism. This is the first time a politician, not a businessman, has held the position of President of Kespa. Many are expected to pay attention to this appointment globally. The inauguration ceremony will be held at a press conference at the VIP restaurant Capitol Hill (?).
According to starfinder ...old President is SK Telecom corp's vice president. It's unfair for other teams and he hasn't enough power to affect Korea government and other mega companies.
the new guy has.

I don't even know what to think of this.. I guess a translation might help.. but.. probably not.

Via MC's Twitter
"Korea congressperson join KESPA president it's The good news i think it's good for korea e-sports "
It certainly does give the organization some extra stature and credibility.
|
SNM said this should be good for esports. More esport power in the korean government, and the guy supports esports 100%.
|
Interesting. I hope it leads to that, rather than a simple magnification of Kespa's draconian rule.

This is interesting...hm an esports-involved individual in the government :O
I trust MC's judgment on this, he's actually quite perspicacious.
|
since league is getting bigger across the globe and Korea is the biggest esport country, I suspect this is more to do with league than starcraft 2. But he should be able to make the esport scene more viable and structural.
|
iirc KeSPA has long been sanctioned by the government, part of the Ministry or something. This move emphasizes more on that and shows that the government really cares about esport
|
Hmm, not really sure if this is good for kespa. Korea just finished presidential elections, with the saenuri party being voted in and this guy is from an opposition party... Guess we'll have to keep an eye out

he works for kespa.

If you want a translation PM a translator, they don't have time to read every thread.
|
I don't know what to think of this. On the one hand, Kespa isn't exactly an organization renowned for being all sunshines and rainbows. On the other hand, esports will grow because of this.
|
The really important questions are... Why did the old President leave? Who picked this guy (probably the sponsors that everyone says run KeSPA), and more importantly, why?
|
So, team8 has sponsor yet?
|
On January 25 2013 12:10 bduddy wrote: The really important questions are... Why did the old President leave? Who picked this guy (probably the sponsors that everyone says run KeSPA), and more importantly, why?

Doesn't matter, SC is KeSPA's flagship game and any money into korean SC is good news, really

League of Legends isn't a KeSPA-endorsed game, and Riot Korea doesn't want KeSPA getting their hands in the pie any time soon.
|
Well he is the only congressmn who has been opposing korea's stupid anti gaming law for months. This could be a great news for Korean e-sports, but im afraid kespa might make him their puppet..

Yes, LoL is the most popular eSport in Korea, but what you are claiming is wrong. I don't think KeSPA is in charge of the LoL league. They participate, but they don't run and organize the league by any means. Not every KeSPA team has an LoL team too. It is fair to say SC is still KeSPA's flagship since KeSPA harbour way more SC teams/players than LoL teams/players.
|
Almost looks like Flash photo-bombed that picture.
|
So, SC is still Kespa's flagship or SC2? Because I'm sure there are other games ranking above SC2.
|

SC as in StarCraft as in the StarCraft franchise.
|
damn you Flash. Real champ knows when to suit up
|
This should be interesting. I can;t wait to see how this all unfolds.
|
The newly appointed president of Kespa has been known to be supportive of the gaming industry in a non-biased way unlike others so we'll see what happens. Many Korean netizens are also hoping he'll deliver. I really hope he promotes some individual leagues though.
|
I'll translate this from a Chinese Source which translated it from the Korean Source. It's not a full translation, but I think most of the important information are in there.
If there's any issue with the translation please let me know and I'll change it.
A member of the Korean Democratic Party, Jeong Byung Hun, officially became the fifth president of Kespa today. This is the first time where a politician becomes the leader of Kespa. This position was previously held by the higher level executives of hanbit and SKT.
Mr Jeong Byung Hun was active in the public communications committee of the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and has been very concerned with the IT and the gaming industry. Previously, when the ruling party was pushing for its forced shutdown rule for youths and was faced with strong opposition from the industry, Mr Jeong was also actively putting forth his voice of opposition.
The eSports industry is also hoping that the politician would be able to bring about a greater influence for the industry, and also inject new life into it. Mr Jeong was inaugurated this afternoon at the National Assembly Building, and many representatives from the industry, including player Flash, attended the ceremony.
This is an interview with him which one of the Korean media company did.
You paid a visit to the association. What was your impression of it?
I wasn't there specially to see what I could learn about it. I was just there to visit the staff which I would be leading in the future, and to encourage the people.
What made you want to become the president of Kespa?
Another suggestion was to become the president of the Gaming Industry Association, but I personally felt that if gaming was turned into a sport, it'd probably eliminate the prejudice that people have towards gaming, and I'm really looking forward to that. Also, as the founding nation of eSports, Korean eSports hasn't been able to receive support from the country, and moreover, the industry is very messy, and all these makes me very disappointed. Even though it's not an easy task, I will take on this responsibility of growing this industry and of changing the perceptions of the society in a positive way.
It's widely rumoured nowadays that the eSports world is in danger.
There is indeed some danger lying in the Starcraft 2 league. As compared to leagues in Starcraft 1, whether it be the number of players, or the number of viewers, the numbers are less, even to the extent where teams are disbanding one by one. But I understand also that on the other hand, the LOL leagues are very popular. What the association needs to do from now on will be to make some big changes and to activate the casual gamers, and from there, we'll be unshakeable when we face danger, and grow into a deep rooted tree.
What's the first issue that you'll be looking to solve?
The issue with Team 8 will have to be solved first. After that, we'll work hard to improve the society's perception of us, and integrating with similar organisations, through reforms, to expand influence amongst the fans.
Are you talking about building new teams and the issue with the already disbanded Airforce Ace?
The issue with Airforce Ace, we'll have to discuss with the defense department before coming to any conclusion. The association will also be working to solve other issues in the future. As for building new teams, I will strive to bring everyone good news in the near future.
The association has always been very dependent on SKT. Will that continue?
We are unable to reveal any details now. But we're looking forward to SKT continuing to lend their support as they did before. To receive continued support no matter the circumstances in the outside world, that is very important.
|
Thanks for the interview, interesting times ahead.
|
i really like this guy. iv noticed that alot of the respectable korean ppl have the same opinions on issues as TL (in this case, that sc2 doesnt have a casual player base like LoL(.
|
wow, they talk a lot about Starcraft in that interview. Hope they have a solution in making SC2 popular.
|
So it's a possible return of Airforce ACE, nice!
|
SK Telecom's the only reason we have Proleague right now

Thanks for the translation Weirdkid! Interesting change, will probably strength esports if he does what he says he will do lol
|
This sounds great. I hope he also reaches out to blizzard so that they bring back some of the features which made BW so popular.
|
Sounds good for eSports. Hope that will be the result of this
|
This is very good for e-sports in korea and the world, if it manages to get some press, the fact that a relevant political figure is at the head of the largest e-sports organization in korea gives it some validity across the globe.
Many politicians have been flamed for gaming in their free time, it would be nice if that image could change a bit
|
Bringing politicians into ESPORTS doesn't seem like a good idea But I don't know this guy, he's maybe passionated about ESPORTS and doesn't only look at numbers. From the interview, it doesn't seem to be the case.

This must give esports in Korea some extra credibility so I am totally down for this.

I suppose its pretty big, but I don't really understand KESPA organization.

Basically they're a terrible organization that did some really terrible shit in the BW scene in Korea. I wish they had absolutely no chance in SC2, but alas.

Feel free to regail me with their thrilling tales of inspiration and beauty. Until then, I'll continue believing that they handled their business like power-crazy tyrants with complete disregard for their employees (players).

A less overly controlling organization comprised of kespa and esf coming in? One can hope..
Oh man if it was only possible to have a proleague with 14-16 teams..

i think kespa did more good than bad :/ what do you mean by disregard for their players? key players get paid well, trainees get paid like interns, they get vacation time and the team decides what the player should do in prioritizing, not kespa.
