While a good gesture from Blizzard, it's a gesture that shouldn't have to exist in the first place. It's simply yet another way for them to squeeze money out of people, and it irks me whenever this subject comes up. Take a look at Steam, which allows one to freely update one's profile name on a whim. Since, as with Blizzard, your account is tied to your e-mail, not your name, there's no worry about name collisions or whatnot. That is, profile/usernames need not need be unique. At least Blizzard doesn't pull what Microsoft does for Xbox Live, where your profile name does indeed have to be unique. The only not-for-profit reason I can think of for having this microtransaction in place is to prevent flooding Blizzard servers, etc. with name changes. However, this is easily mitigated through several other means, and shouldn't require a monetary investment to pursue. ~ End rant ~ Sorry, little nickel and diming techniques like this just make me cringe.

It's just so you can remove clan tags from your name. They aren't nickel and diming anything. If you care so much that it is hard for you to change your name with Blizzard then why don't you complain you cannot change your name after 500 posts on TL?

It would be completely fine if this was a free2play game and the monetizes on there little extra things. But I don't know about you, but I have payed fucking 50 Euro for SC2, so I would expect not to pay for nonsensical reason. I don't actually want to change my nickname, I have one that I use universally and I like it but still, it makes me go nuts everytime I hear about the idea of paying for it. It is just so monumentaly idiotic that it overflows even my very high level of idiocy-resistance that has been nurtiured by many years on the internet.

Yeah it's because in the past we didn't have to pay a dime or otherwise spend any considerable amount of effort in order to be able to play StarCraft under a different name. Plus the fact that we could do so whenever we goddamn pleased. That's why.

They are nickel and diming by making users pay money whenever they want to change their names, a service that costs them essentially nothing. If you care so much that it is hard for you to change your name with Blizzard then why don't you complain you cannot change your name after 500 posts on TL? Apples and oranges. When other online games lets one change profile names at one's leisure, coming up to a "pay me to advance" roadblock is naturally frustrating. Gaming profile names should not be immutable. Plus, TL at least provides an explanation for their "500 posts" rule, and it's not one I'm gonna bump into anytime soon, anyway. : )

You can't really separate costs like that though. If you really think like that you could also say that Blizzard maintains servers, patches their game and occasionally bans a hacker, all of which cost money, but you only paid for the initial game, not the subsequent services which Blizzard provides for free (my point is obviously that it is not really free, it is part of the initial cost of the game, but it need not be). Maybe their game really should cost 52 Euro if they didn't charge for name changes (not really since apparently Blizzard doesn't want to implement paid name change, but hypothetically the point stands). Obviously name change could be free and that would be fine, but personally I would actually prefer name changes to have a small cost associated to them (maybe $5 or something along those lines). That way it is much easier to keep track of who you are playing and therefore knowing whether they are an asshole, cheeser, hacker or a generally nice dude.
