With the release of Heart of The Swarm, Clarity Gaming will be opening its doors to take in and help foster up-and-coming talent. In doing so we hope to allow 8 players the opportunity to prove themselves in an established team environment. The final roster will be showcased week to week in various events while they compete for a spot on our professional roster and the opportunity to win a fully paid trip to a Premier North American event.
Clarity Gaming’s CEO: Brandon “Adama” Altman had this to say:
“Clarity Gaming is dedicated to the promotion of the next generation of eSports' torch bearers. Investing in the future of the industry is the responsibility of all of us who truly care about the growth and sustainability of professional gaming.”
Team Operations Manager Mike “winteR” Ortlani added:
“Our plans for the Clarity Academy will change the face of professional gaming by fostering new ideas and breaking from the bad habits of the established modes of thought. New talent is the lifeblood of any industry; this is especially true of an industry where being in your mid 20s is considered 'old'. Clarity Gaming is dedicated to providing the development of high quality gaming and our academy is representative of that.”
EDIT: A VOD from an interview with winteR concerning the Academy with some Q&A at the end: VOD Link Here Timestamps: 10:15 - Intro Background/Bio 29:30 - Academy Information 40:22 - Q&A from thread 58:00 - Viewer Q&A and wrap up.
Once accepted into the academy, 8 players will be participating in weekly in-house events and practice. The players will be reviewed each quarter (every 3 months, prior to main events) with the chance for a promotion to the professional team. Promotions will be based on the ability to produce results consistent with the professional roster.
1. The Academy roster will be made up of 8 players at any given time. 2. Following a player(s) promotion to the professional team, their open slot on the roster will be filled in the following quarter. 3. Each Quarter is 3 months: Winter (Jan-March), Spring (April-June), Summer (July-September), Fall (October-December). 4. Results will be measured in four categories: In-house tournaments, team leagues, online tournament results, in-house practice participation.

EDIT: Some Q&A from the thread thus far: + Show Spoiler +Q: Is there an age requirement? A: Not currently, this may change down the line.
Q: Which account code should I provide? A: Feel free to attach all of them. As HotS official release will be a continuation of your WoL account, that is the one we ask at a minimum. At the end of the day all accounts are better than 1.
Q: How Do we turn in our Application? A: If you're asking about the player application - Simple copy the form from the link, fill your info in and send it to the email listed: clarityacademy@gmail.com with subject line 'Player Application.'
If you're talking about applying for a media/management position then you should have a prepared resume like mine (shown as an example). Or a portfolio if you are a caster, and write up a cover letter like you would for any 'real' professional job. Send both in PDF format to the email listed above with subject line "Staff Application.'
Q: Is living in the Team House Required? A: No, it is not required. In fact the team house as of right now is not going to be specifically involved in the Player Academy. We hope to bring players into the house down the line but right now that is not fiscally feasible. Players who show enough promise who can also cover their end of living in the house would be able to move in.
Q: Why are you only taking players from ‘NA’ region: A: First of all, we want to start in the NA region because we are based there, and we understand there is a great need to help progress SC2 and the eSports industry in general here in NA.
We are accepting applications from: Canada, US, South America, Latin America. Some restrictions/stipulations will apply to players residing outside of the US.
We intend to expand into EU when we have more financial backing. Unfortunately we just can't take that large of a step right now.
Q: Will the recruitment tournament be casted?
The 4th and final tournament definitely will be. I am working on covering the Saturday portions of the first 3 as well, but that is not set in stone yet. That will be finalize by the application deadline.

Glad Clarity is doing this.

well guess ill get my app in.
though how are we supposed to turn this in? I see that I have to print some stuff such as some of the stuff in the application needs to be written, and submit a cover letter and a variety of other things, which is hard to convey in an email? So a word doc or something along those lines, and pictures of the forms?

This is awesome for Starcraft and Esports. The guys at Clarity are doing things right =D

Good luck to all applicants. This is definitely the sort of thing that I'd consider applying for, given that I was actually good enogh to play SC2 competitively.

Is it posible to be eligible living in South America?
|
Players have to live in north america? Damn shame, this wouldve been so cool

My only question is living in the gaming house required? As it stands I have car payments, school loans and car insurance to pay each month which requires me to work my current job. I would love to apply and I know I would work hard and I can fulfill the requirements that are described, therefore that is my only concern.

No, it is not required. In fact the team house as of right now is not going to be specifically involved in the Player Academy. We hope to bring players into the house down the line but right now that is not fiscally feasible.

Such a good idea Clarity!
Love it when teams step up to the plate and decide that they want to help grow eSports from the ground up. It would be awesome if every team was able to run an academy like this.

Pretty interesting stuff from clarity!

Should we be waiting until HotS comes out and use that Account and Character code. Or is it alright if we include out HotS beta or WoL one? I do not think my HotS will be delivered in time for the app deadline.

Yes, it really would. But it also takes a lot of time from an organizational standpoint on top of the added costs to make it worthwhile to players. It's very hard for teams to cover that cost on top of paying player salaries and trips and the like to have a professional roster that is relevant.

Clarity always being awsome. I wish i was masters. Do you guys still have no sponsors . GLGLGL to you guys.

No one on the team has a trust fund. Our team owner Brandon makes a comfortable living outside of eSports and he has enough room within that to back the team. Our operational budget is nowhere near as high as other teams in the industry which helps keep us at a sustainable operational level. If we suddenly decided to pick up a player like Polt or Squirtle (before he joined LG-IM), we would be stepping way beyond that sustainable level.
As for the Academy, it does not cost all that much up front. The big investment is in man hours spent organizing all of this, and going forward with managing the players. Clarity is made up of a team of people which are here doing what we love for the betterment of the industry. Once a player within the Academy reaches a level worthy of promotion and being sent to an invent is where money really becomes involved.
Instead of using that money to pick up and contract another big professional player, we have decided to instead use it to incentivize our Academy. That way we can help up and coming players get to the level where they too can earn money playing the game. For the players who don't reach that level while they're with us, they will at least reach a well rounded understanding of what is expected and required of them to become a true professional player.
|
In regards to the 3 staff picks that are admitted into the academy, what do you base the acceptance off of?

oh meant to ask this earlier, as in terms of media/staff positions, Have any use for someone that has all the free time in the world that just likes to write, and has no real qualifications? More like is there anything to apply for just to volunteer for something?
|
I came here to echo KiF1re's question. I've had a short story published and have written a couple IEM previews for a league of legends site. i think a lot of people don't have much a portfolio, I'd say.

Well realistically anyone with or without a resume is still applying for a volunteer position. As far as staff applications go we are looking for anyone and everyone who is interested in working with us in order to gain more experience and further themselves.
So yes, we are interested in writers, casters, video producers, management staff, etc. The reason we are asking for a resume and a cover letter is because I think that if you want to call yourself a professional x, y, or z you damn well better reflect that in your actions and in the content you produce.
Even if you don't have a portfolio, resume, cover letter prepped I would still like to see you submit something in the way of that. For the two of you - writing samples would be great to throw in. But I really want to see the people applying for staff positions actually treating their application like they are applying for a real job. You would never email a potential employer with just "hey, I've never done this before as a job, but I enjoy it as a hobby. I don't really have much to show you that I am good at this." You would email them with a cover letter letting them know why you would be an asset to the organization, with your resume and supporting work to back that up.
So if you really think you're interested in being say a manager but you really don't have any experience (or enough of it) to list into a full resume then try and get creative. Create a captivating cover letter that explains where your management skills helped you somewhere in real life. Send in writing, video, etc samples. Even if it's not a full portfolio. Just do anything you can do to show me you are a innovative thinker and help you stand out from the average person who shoots me a PM saying something like "Hey if you ever need any help with stuff, I would love to be a part of Clarity."
At the end of the day I need to see that you're qualified to handle the tasks I give out without me around to hold your hand. Even though you're working for free, I still expect professional quality out of your work.
Sorry for the long response, but I hope this helps and greatly hope to see some applications from you both!
Edit: The Resume I posted of mine as an example is something I put together in about an hour a couple of weeks ago. I used the very same format as my architecture resume and just focused all of the content to show what I have done and can do as a manager. There is content directly done in SC2 and eSports, and there is also examples of things I have done in 'real life.' I firmly believe anyone is capable of making themselves a portfolio like that even if they don't have formal training, a degree, or SC2 Specific experience.

Final results of what? The initial accepted applicants? They will be notified Saturday 3/16.
In terms of the final 8 roster - that will be decided following the Final recruitment tournament on 4/13.
For you and other players - I have just sent out an initial response to the 34 of you who have applied today with details and what to expect from here. Those of you who really stand out in your application will be contacted early. Those who are not contacted early will still have time over the month of recruitment tournaments to make themselves more appealing and prove themselves in the tournaments.
I hope that answers your question. :o

yeah ahah it does, thanks
edit: I wasn't one of the people who already applied, but I just sent it in woop woop woop woop xD

Did you receive the initial reply email? If so it contained details on what to expect from here on out. We will not be making initial contact to players until this weekend (3/9-11). Everyone will be notified between then and Saturday 3/16 on whether or not they have been accepted.
If you did not receive the initial reply email, please resubmit your application and make sure the address is correct (clarityacademy@gmail.com). Otherwise we do not have your app!

Hey all, just a quick update as I thought this might be beneficial for applicants and those still considering if they want to apply.
This Wednesday 3/6 at 9PM EST I will be interviewed on our weekly show "Spotlight on Clarity." The Academy will be a large focus of the interview. If you would like to tune in to listen we'll be answering some viewer questions at the end. Link to more information here!
|
Hey just a quick question here, which I think everyone is also thinking of: what would be the bo format for the final tournament after the first 3 qualifiers? and what will the map pool be?
|
Is the tournament in WOL or HOTS?
|
On March 05 2013 12:48 shorez wrote: Hey just a quick question here, which I think everyone is also thinking of: what would be the bo format for the final tournament after the first 3 qualifiers? and what will the map pool be?
The tournament will be in HotS as that is what the Academy will be focusing on. That is why we have pushed back the first tournament until 2 weeks past HotS release.
The BO format is listed under the tournament schedule. The final tournament will be BO3 double elimination, just like MLG/IPL. It will probably have a BO5 finals. Map pool and the rest of the details will be released after the application deadline passes and we know how many people are fully accepted.

If so, you'll notice if you re-read that I noted there will be no initial contact until this weekend (3/9-3/11).
If you did not receive that email at all - it means we did not get your application. So please PM me if that is the case.
EDIT: I just checked the spam folder and found 1, possibly 2 emails that may not have been received. Will be replying soon.
Thanks, Mike

Just wanted to update this thread with some new info:
1. It looks like at this point we will likely be seeding the entire applicant group into the first recruitment tournament on Friday/Saturday 3/22-3/23. Hopefully everyone who has applied will be able to make it to that first tournament. 2. We have contacted the top 16 or so applicants today (Sunday) and will be in touch with more of you by the day. 3. If you are not contacted early, do not fret. I will be expanding contact more every day as the application deadline draws closer. I am only one person, so please be patient if you don't hear back super early. 4. The application deadline is now pushed back to Tuesday 3/19 following MLG Dallas. Note: This will -NOT- push any of the other dates back. 5. Tournament details: Map pool, Brackets, Finalized start times, etc will be emailed out by Tuesday 3/19 -AT THE LATEST- but may be sent out as early as Saturday 3/16. 6. Follow the following twitter accounts for more frequent updates: @Clarity_Gaming & @WinterSC2
Thanks!

Hello everyone, First of all I would like to thank everyone for their patience this week. I'm sure many of you were eager to get some initial contact and were disappointed when none came. I actually had a much busier week than I originally thought and am now out of town for the weekend and through early next week. Because of that I ended up not making any further contact with players past the initial 16 'stand out' applicants. Despite not reaching out past those 16, there are still a many more of you I am interested in talking more with. I intend to do that starting sometime mid next week after I return home.
What you need to know: 1. Once you've been added to the skype group you will have access to more frequent updates from myself concerning events going on throughout the week outside of the recruitment tournaments. 2. We have a total of 52 applicants. -EVERYONE- will be seeded into the -FIRST- recruitment tournament on Friday 3/22 - Saturday 3/23. 3. Depending on how close we feel the competition (skill gap) is between the bottom 20 or so players will determine if we seed more than 32 players in tournaments 2 and 3. 4. Outside of the tournaments, our 'daily' events will be another avenue to show off your prowess as a player outside of streaming and ladder stats. Every 51 of your will have access to these events if you so choose. 5. Recruitment tournament #1 Brackets will be finalized and emailed out on Tuesday 2/19 after the application deadline passes. 6. -ALL- tournaments, events, etc will be played on Heart of the Swarm.

If evidence is 100% irrefutable the said player will be cut from the Academy process moving forward. 11A. Any unlisted rule or disagreement must be comminucated to a match admin prior the start of a match. 11B. Match admins reserver the right to alter, change, add, or remove any rules at any point in time.
Tournament #1 Brackets: Friday 3/22: TBA Tuesday 3/19 Saturday 3/23: TBA Friday 3/22 following the end of Ro. 8.

Good luck to applicants. I decided to not apply because I'm simply too rusty. Perhaps the next time.
