I think this will really aid in Suppy's improvement in HOTS as well as good practice partners for the rest of the team. I understand he has been in school for the past year and it is good to hear that he is taking the utmost advantage as a player for EG.
Edit: A lot of people have been speculating whether or not this is an April Fool's joke and I honestly doubt it. It is March 31st here in the states so it would not even count as April Fools. If they really wanted to shock everyone they would have said something along the lines of "We are merging with TL" or "We have signed Ma "sAviOr" Jae Yoon and we have made a deal with Kespa to allow him to play on EG-TL in ProLeague."
Edit 2: I think the reason for Suppy going to Korea is to get a taste of what it is like and if he wants to stay there for an extended period of time perhaps during the summer. As many people have pointed out 5 weeks is a relatively short amount of time for practicing but I still think this is a smart move for Suppy.
Edit 3: response from EGIncontrol and Suppy (superiorwolf)

Unfortunately this is so very true D:

This seems very plausible, but it's still april first in korea. The fact that it's a US announcement seems pretty legit though. Suppy is already really good, this is gonna be crazy o:
Sadly because of the period in time during which he made his breakout, Suppy does not get the recognition he deserves. He is indeed very skilled and this training should benefit him even more, although I wish he could stay for longer. :s
If this is true (I'm still bitter over some of the April Fool's shenanigans that's been going on today), I really hope Suppy can get the most out of it! He's a fantastic player, and if he can put in the time and learn the most effective way to practice while in Korea, he'll be even better.

It's still march in the USA. Could probably ask Suppy for confirmation on twitter or something.
@Mistertea: Suppy is in college, so obviously he can't go for very long.
It's also still March in Canada, interesting huh? Many companies (Blizzard to name one) frequently makes their announcements on March 31st. The tweet says he's going during may, which is when school is off (assuming he isn't taking summer school, which he has been doing in the past), which makes it seem more real. If it is a joke, wouldn't you want it to seem real, and not blatantly obvious?
Even if I'm wrong, so what? Nothing. I'm not buying it.

That's pretty much how I feel as well.
The best april fools are the ones people actually believe, aka the plausible ones. Bomber did an april fools last year that he was going to the military. Nothing funny about that, but tons of people believed it.
I just think if EG was going to do an April Fools it would be involving one of their most popular players, not suppy. And it would be more complicated than " He's going to Korea to train during the summer break "
They're probably doing it because Stephano is leaving Korea. But Suppy should really not fuck around and try to finish his studies when he still can. He's doing okay as a part time pro, and he's on EG sohis situation is golden.

Thier most popular players - Demuslim already said he likely will be, just not soon. Huk, well him going to korea wouldn't be anything new/special. Idra, not special either, and he has recently voiced he really isn't interested. Stephano just came back and basically said it was a nightmare. Thorzain wouldn't be news either. Machine? He has a really small fanbase, I don't think such an announcement would lift many eyes.
As someone above said, it's the plausible ones that are the better jokes, regardless of how "exciting" it is. You think it's just a coinsidence it was posted march 31/ap1?
Now of course, neither of us actually know for sure, but I can't believe it would be happening (just based on the timing, not the act itself)
Meh, first off, 5 weeks in korea wont really do much for anyone anyway... secondly, suppy is dedicated to school, he will never be the best, and third, he wont even get fielded in proleague or get to play in gsl.. so this is quite unimportant to me.

I totally agree, but to be honest if you are going for a progamer is extremely risky and not a viable option in the long run. There is no way you can compete against a korean who is practicing 12 hours and discussing strategies in the teamhouse. I hope Suppy will take this opportunity as visiting a foreign country and that he will enjoy the stay more than Stephano did XD
If it is one, its the most boring one I ever heard.
Indeed, and if it is, then suppy fans would be very disappointed.
Not really. A lot of foreigners have spent a month or so in Korea: Sjow, Destiny, Grubby, Illusion, State, Drewbie, and probably a few more. 5 weeks really doesn't mean much, on the other hand pros who spend a year or so in Korea improve a lot.

well he's actually pretty competitive with them already, see the top 8 finish at BWC.
he's not ready to mortgage his future on progaming and he is still one of the best foreigners out there. While having a 4.0 at UC Berkley.
If you are able to manage both, its the smartest thing to do honestly. Progaming isn't established enough in the west for everyone to justify putting off school.
As a side note is Suppy Korean by descent like SeleCT? I know he is American passport etc. just curious if he will have the same language barrier issues as Stephano.

SeleCT is Korean and Suppy is of Chinese descent.
Ok cool thx for clarification. I knew SeleCT was Korean, now that you say it I remember reading about him being Chinese in his blogs about CSL.

I know some players have said that you need a long time in Korea to really learn, but I doubt it will be in vain with a shorter period. Also it could be to give Suppy a taste of what full-time progaming is like, since he won't be in school forever and will have to make a choice at some point whether to pursue progaming or something else.

Yeah I think for someone of his nature it's more of a choice between "do i want to do the progaming now and put off my life, or jump right into a career".
Hopefully for us it's the first; you can always go get a job once you are done with progaming.

I'm sure I'm not most people, but I don't care about a league which features players who dropped out of high school to work for a professional gaming team dedicated to building brand recognition for a large corporation (basically Kespa style proleague teams). If it is a legitimate profession, then we would expect professionals filling the ranks. I'm objecting to the kids filling the ranks of pro teams, and, more importantly, the horribly paid b-teams of pro teams-- the "practice slaves" as referenced by Huk in his last MLG interview. We Westerners tend to get very upset when 15 year old kids make our sneakers, but we don't get upset when they work to promote Samsung or Korean Telecom?
However, I consider it as legitimate of a profession as any other athletic profession. Until we see a 60 year old White-Ra or Nestea winning tournaments in 2043, then we have to assume that progaming is a transient existence. Because it is transient, we should expect players (as professionals) to have an exit strategy and a post-gaming career plan. This is basically what many Western pros are doing, they are either in university now, or they wait to be a full time pro until after university. The reason they are behind Koreans is that their Korean counterparts will likely have an additional 6-8 years of full time progaming experience compared to a Westerner. It's an almost impossible gap to overcome, and it's pretty obvious that the best Western progamers are the ones who went straight into progaming after high school, but they are still behind the Koreans who started earlier than them.
Can't wait to see him kick ass! Suppy has been one of my favorite zergs to watch stream, so I hope he'll still be up at reasonable hours for us back in Europe and USA. Should be interesting to see how the team house environment will work out for him also, as far as I know he's always just trained on his own. ( As in not in a team house)
Whoa. Will be awesome to see just how well he does. I mean he's so beast just as a premed at UCB, will be amazing to see what he can do with some more hardcore training :D

You know suppy beat polt towards the end of WoL in a showmatch? Before polt semi-retired to go study that is. He's pretty good. Obviously he isn't going to win GSL anytime soon, but he's also not a full time progamer.
I'm just saying that the foreigner scene will never keep up if they do not fully dedicate themselves. I'm fine with people wanting to transition in life I just want to see some more committed players.
Maybe we need less commitment from Koreans?
I'm sure I'm not most people, but I don't care about a league which features players who dropped out of high school to work for a professional gaming team dedicated to building brand recognition for a large corporation (basically Kespa style proleague teams). Similarly, I wouldn't care about a baseball league or baseball records where all of the players are taking steroids, and I don't care about the skill of athletes who graduate from East-Germany style athletic schools. I know that admiring the sacrifice of players in their passionate pursuit of progaming is a big thing on TL, but there are many things not worth sacrificing.
Kudos to Suppy for trying to have it all. I hope that he does great things when he can go full time after he graduates from school.
Do you not view pro gaming as a legitimate profession? If it is a legitimate profession you would expect a professional level commitment no? That seems to be the problem that koreans treat it as a profession and foreigners treat it as a hobby that pays.
Outside of Korea, it's not. SC2 has been around for less than three years. To mortgage your future and bet the rest of your life on being able to support yourself through playing it is beyond stupid.

nonsense. No one is doing that by taking time off to play professionally. First off, the time they are suggesting he is going wouldn't impact his education. Second, he could take years off if he wanted to and very easily rejoin school in order to pursue whatever future he wanted. I speak from experience, as someone who took 6 years off of school to play poker professionally and am now close to getting my degree in accounting. Let people choose their own paths and quit being so judgmental.
Best wishes for Suppy. I'm betting he got a phone call from Scarlett saying "OMG, it's great, you need to get over here."
That and of all the players currently on EG and in NA, he's a clear choice to send with regard to recent performance and desire. He's no stranger to hard work either, and I think Coach Park could do wonders with him.

First of all, I'm not aware of any Koreans who've dropped out of high school to become progamers. Players like Flash, Stats, Jaedong, etc, have all graduated high school. Secondly, why do you care if the teams are sponsored by big corporations? Do you care that sports arenas are owned by big corporations, or that people working regular jobs are at big corporations? What does this even mean?
Thirdly, are you ACTUALLY spending a lot of time practicing to using steroids? Spending a lot of time practicing is commitment and professionalism. Using steroids to play baseball is illegal. Sure, it'd be nice if the players could also have more free time, but that's what the job entails. Just like if you're a professional hockey player you have to travel a lot and sustain some injuries. All jobs involve some sort of sacrifices. Not caring about the top leagues for these reasons is absolutely absurd.

While it probably won't make him a GSL champion, if he takes the time there seriously, I could see him becoming a serious competitor in the foreign scene. And more importantly, I think getting a taste of what it is like to train in Korea gives you a mindset of how to structure your own practice sessions.
Wish Suppy all well in Korea. I guess that he may learn a lot while staying and playing in Korea. It all just seems like a short-term travel after graduation? Besides, Korea is much more closer to China and Suppy may have less trouble visit friends and relatives in China as well. XDDDD

Based on my knowledge from what others said on a previous thread when I brought this up, Flash didn't finish high school with the rest of his age group.
The point about large corporations wasn't railing on corporations, it was about the distinction between amateur and professional. That's a big difference when teenagers are involved.
You just missed the steroid comparison completely. It wasn't about spending time to practice, it was about unacceptable sacrifices. Back when steroids were used, they weren't seriously banned (as in the official rules of baseball). It ended up being an exercise in game theory, if you wanted to keep pace with the rest of people playing baseball, you had to take steroids. The analogy here is that taking large risks to get ahead in esports should be an unnecessary sacrifice which should be looked down upon.
In contrast, the likes of Mr Berkman prioritised their own well-being long after retirement over their teams’ imperative to win now. Like all of us, professional athletes respond to incentives, and baseball players who doped did no more and no less than what they were paid to do.

The same way Spring Training for Baseball makes a difference. Suppy is a player who has never been coached by anyone with the skill set Coach Park has. Just learning from Coach Park how to train on his own and better ways to practice could give Suppy an edge over a lot of NA players. Considering the rumors that the scene might get more regional, boot camping in Korea to kick ass back home seems like a really smart move.

Based on my knowledge from what others said on a previous thread when I brought this up, Flash didn't finish high school with the rest of his age group.

In contrast, the likes of Mr Berkman prioritised their own well-being long after retirement over their teams’ imperative to win now. Like all of us, professional athletes respond to incentives, and baseball players who doped did no more and no less than what they were paid to do.
but unnecessary sacrifice is a pretty big grey area. A lot of singers/actors start really young and sacrifice their childhood. So is the case in sports, even though 14-15 years old don't play basketball professional in the States, the top ones might as well be because they spend almost all their time practicing and travelling with their teams.
Honestly I don't understand why so many people say 5 weeks won't do that much. That's probably true for an established pro who is already playing full time but for a player like Suppy 5 weeks of intensive training in Korea can achieve a lot. I think you people overestimate the notion that going to Korea will not help your improvement short term which was brought up by Idra a couple of times. I definitely think that there is some truth to it but I think it depends on entirely on approach, mindset and mentality.

Everything you listed is far more established that SC2. People who spend their childhood practicing music also educate themselves in the creation and production of music. People who practice any professional sport also have the ability to train in coaching, physical education/training. What they are dedicating a large amount of their time can be directly translated into a career in a related field. SC2 does not have that yet. From my understanding, Suppy is a very scoring student at Berkeley, which is one of the most prodigious universities in the world.
Suppy is on a career path that could earn him as much money, if not more, than the majority of professional SC2 players. There is no reason for him to sacrifice anything and claiming he should do so it short sighted.

I agree that it's a gray area, but I don't think it's something that the community has actually had a conversation about. From what I read on these forums, most people are of the opinion more sacrifice = more worthy of respect. I think that's a very dangerous approach to take especially when we're discussing kids and young adults who are doing something primarily for our entertainment.
I agree with your example of child actors. As it turns out a lot of them can end up really messed up later on in life because of their childhood experiences. However, athletes usually fare better because there are strict guidelines which state how much they can practice in leagues, and the stresses demanded of the body physically limit the amount of time that you can spend in athletics.

Damn, he is pre-med at Berkeley, rocking high grades and is still this good at SC2. Well I am an underachiever in all ways. I would like to correct my previous statement, his earning potential could be on par with Flash depending on the branch of medicine he goes into(full career, until retirement, to be clear).
Good for Suppy, I am glad he is getting the opportunity from EG. I think the focus on development of players is something that a lot of foreign teams could work on a bit. From the outside looking in it seems like a fair few acquire players while they are on the up and up and expect purely self driven results. While that isn't to be ignored and is a good expectation and quality to have of and in a player I love seeing this kind of investment being made in talent.

Unfortunately this is so very true D:
Still, going to Korea and training with the best SC2 coach they have to offer is a story worth telling. Good luck out there sir and we will be cheering for you.
Why would this be a joke? Suppy is or at least was very good, though I have no idea what his skill level is at the moment, so he should make a decent addition to their Korean roster.
I really hope this is not a April fools joke. I have watched Suppy play lately and he has really improved, I'd be excited to see how much more he could improve if he got the opportunity to train in Korea! tbh I think if he was not a college student and focused his efforts on Starcraft 2 full-time, he could become one of the best but that's just my opinion and that is a rather large investment from Suppy.
the april fool's probably is that this is not an april fool's. not sure i'm buying it though. i guess it could be good if it happens but haven't a lot of people said it takes a lot longer than a month to get any real benefit out of training in Korea?

not a big sacrifice at all.. i spent entire summers drinking and playing soccer. i still got into med school.
only things that really matter are GPA which suppy has and MCAT which im sure he will be fine and being a progamer is UNIQUE how many premeds can say they were a progamer and got to travel the world to play games? if anything this will help him get into med school
med school isnt just about community service/research although yes it is important but it is not a deal breaker like everyone thinks.. as long as you do a little you are fine
this experience brings a lot more interesting and uniqueness which can help him more than being the standard applicant
If you guys watch state of the game, Artosis states several times it's useless for any pro gamer to only go to South Korea for a short time. Many top Koreans/Artosis all agree it's only worth it if you plan to stay for a min of 2 years in Korea or more if you really want to improve learn.
Artosis then again says someone can come to Korea for a short period of time and learn small things here and there but not really improve when they return home. If suppy is going just for 5 months of pro league sector, hope he can provide better results then stephano did.
Artosis and wolf also state it takes a good 2-3 months just to get used to a Pro Korean gaming house/culture. Suppy is use to having all the free time in the world and options as a young college kid, He has to learn to do nothing but starcraft 2 and no time for himself, hope he can make it, Coach park wont allow him to do anything else.

Well I am pretty sure Coach Park knows what is going on and has a much better idea on how to improve a player in a short period of time. Since Suppy won't be diving into Pro-league, I am sure Coach Park has other plans on how to teach him to become a better player. Boot-camping with the best SC2 coach in the world is never a bad idea.
The end of May is when UC Berkeley, the university that Suppy attends, concludes their spring semester. Also, five weeks is totally reasonable time, during the summer.

why exactly? many people don't even attend to premed school, drink and fuck theirselves through summer and get directly into med school at the age of 18. you don't have to explain your summer. many of them continue doing this through the semesters also and still manage to graduate.

I call this bullshit. Unless you're from some country that with money you can attend anywhere. But here in US, especially Berkeley as one of the best school in the world, it's fucking impossible. Also no one can attend med school at age of 18 without preschool.

ok i don't know about the us system, but here in europe if you want to go to med school, you begin taking extra classes in biology and chemistry at 16, and after you pass an exam in biology and chemistry at the end of high school and you get directly in med school. education is actually 100% free if your grades are good. also many university programs are even harder to get in to than med school (though med school has some of the hardest exams once you're in).
also i'd like to add that the doctor license is regulated pretty universally around the world, in this sense it doesn't matter if you're from berkeley or from an university from ukraine. you have to study the same books. where as there could be a huge difference in for example economy education between 2 institutions..
A typical track in the US is to go pre-med, take MCATs and apply to med school. I don't think pre-med is required, but you do need a 4-year degree of some sort. As SpecialistSC mentioned, most programs do look at volunteer/clinical work so the fact that Suppy is playing SC2 in Korea is kind of nerdballer. I don't think the situation is that dire though, as he's still a sophomore(?) Anyway, I believe, Suppy! Do us proud!

yes it's a typical track. but you can get in directly after high school. it's actually much more typical in europe to get in directly than to attend pre-med 1st (we do have pre-med here too). it's in the culture here to prepare for admission tests/exams in the last 2 year of high school so everybody who takes it seriously gets accepted usually, because 2 year is enough for almost anything.
also the school itself is 6 year here but residency is shorter, and you have to take the same exams throughout. bottom line, you need to produce results at exams/tests, and nobody cares what you do in the summer.
Honestly when people say they are pre-med is retarded, all that means is that you are going to medical school after your undergrad degree. Your undergrad may be bio, biochem. But it is not some awe inspiring thing.
edit: not to say I am not totally impressed that he is both getting a 4.0 atUC Berkeley and a top 16 NA GM. But I could take the prerequisite courses for the mcat while majoring in english and still call myself pre-med.

In contrast, the likes of Mr Berkman prioritised their own well-being long after retirement over their teams’ imperative to win now. Like all of us, professional athletes respond to incentives, and baseball players who doped did no more and no less than what they were paid to do.
That was in 2011, and Flash is currently 20, so he graduated when he was 18. I don't understand what you're saying about corporations. Would you prefer if they were sponsored by smaller companies so that they made less money...?
"It wasn't about spending time to practice, it was about unacceptable sacrifices." Yet you don't mention what these unacceptable sacrifices are? All you talked about was not graduating high school, which was incorrect, and that big corporations are involved. If it's not about spending time to practice, then what is it? That's really the only sacrifice they're making: time spent practicing instead of pursuing another career path. The only other possible sacrifice I can think of is the potential for injury, but the same could be said about pretty much any sport as well.
Hasn't Suppy has been going to University as well as gaming? Maybe this is for EG and also for himself to decide if he would continue going to university and gaming at the same time, or take one or the other, hopefully gaming seeing as he is very talented and a very like-able person

Nothing. I'm not buying it.
o.O ok sorry, lol. My family lives in Canada, I happen to be in the US. I could have also said central, south america, and mexico, but I happened to go with the country I'm in. I'd also have been forgetting any number of islands like Cuba etc. I didn't look at where you live.
I'm not disputing your ability to not buy it. You're more than welcome to do so, I was simply stating evidence as to why I could see it being real.
Plus, this isn't cruel, funny, or otherwise interesting. I don't think it would make a very interesting april fool's joke. On april 2nd, EG is like "lol april fools," but who cares? XD

He's still in school.
Why does it seem like half the foreigners are trying to be progamers while in school? What is the point? They can't possibly be competitive with the koreans like this...
Sure, maybe they get the last laugh when they have good careers to transition into later in life but in the mean time they will be mediocre pro gamers.

Thanks for the information. I guess I was mistaken.

medical school is a lot of memorizing this thing about medical school being so great and medical doctors being so great is a bit overblown. the PhD kind of doctor is a totally different animal.
i've watched a lot of 30+ year old nurses make far better diagnosticians than many MDs... and of course they get fuck all credit for doing it.
I know this wasn't an april fools joke, but it got me thinking... EG should have done an april fools day announcment saying "EGIdra to Proleague!" but use Bryce's picture XD

it all depends on society traditions, prestige on the profession, etc.
while it's prestigous everywhere to some extent, in the USA doctors get paid ridiculously well and in a developing country in Europe they get paid ridiculously bad. here being a doctor isn't that big of a deal, having a degree isn't worth all that much since you won't get a job anyways;)
also they receive the Dr. title after graduating, while for example a materials science engineer studies for 5 years for master's, then researches and studies another 4 years for PhD, from aspects harder things than an MD, and still society thinks they're not "real doctors", it's pretty lame.

Damn, he is pre-med at Berkeley, rocking high grades and is still this good at SC2. Well I am an underachiever in all ways. I would like to correct my previous statement, his earning potential could be on par with Flash depending on the branch of medicine he goes into(full career, until retirement, to be clear).
he has the potential to earn much more than flash does!

well, i know that if you are planning on being a practising MD .. throwing around the term "retarded" in the way it was in that post is ill advised.

On topic: Looks like this is real so I'm happy to see Suppy with a huge opportunity.

Hopefully that community will start to take note that even the highest paid pro-gamers in the world do not make mind blowing amounts of cash. Part of being a professional at any thing is seeing how money time and effort you should invest into what you are doing and the return you will get. Suppy is clearly talented, but investing 2 years in Korea would be a huge mistake for him considering his current prospects.

The huge opportunity is having the life experience. Money and prospects aren't important in life when you get these opportunities.

I don’t think we can assume that 2 years in a Kespa training house would be a more enriching or rewarding life experience than his education at Berkeley, which is considered one of the best universities in the world. If anything, I would say that is up to Suppy and not really something we can comment on.

Damn you for such a logical last sentence! Agreed, only thing left to do is cheer him on when he gets opportunities, or cheer against if you're an antifan. Either way some yellin will happen.

Yeah, quantifying the worth of life experiences is something best left to the person who plans on having those experiences. Or Judges in personal injury and wrongful death litigation, but that shit dry as hell and just depressing. But that doesn’t really apply here.

Great post.... Personally I would say Berkeley but all that matters is Suppy
