I guess you all remember the Pimpest Plays made for Broodwar. I always enoyed them. As I couldnt find any similar for Starcraft II (I found something, but it wasnt good) i decided to make my own project. After a work of a lot of hours in which i searched the games, searched the replays/vods and cutted/edited everything together, i finally finished. I hope you enjoy the Pimpest Plays 2010/2011/2012:
As its blocked in Germany and some other countrys on youtube because of the music in the background ill post a daylimotion link as soon as I will be able to uploud it there
The editing throughout the movie* (for example, at like 5-6 8-10 mins in) makes it incredibly hard to see (the colors are so dark that you can't really see anything..)
There was a few typos (daylimotion etc) and the video itself is quite dark. Should be a lot brighter, sometimes can't see details, on creep for example.
i heared exvodsphoenix (one of the best sc1 moviemakers, learned from the best ^^, you see kAra movie sc1) is going to buy sc2 so i will force him to make a sc2 video too xD
Nice video but it looks very similar to the other top play videos. Also, one play that most people seem to not use that is great and underrated is this Genius storm drops. Genius also had some great viodray micro where each voidray survived with around 10hp during an all in. Naniwa and Kiwikaki using imortall drops to bust out of a contain. Some of lifes ling micro. Leenocks queen switch to block the hellions. I think it might be helpfull to get a thread going where everyone can suggest some plays and then someone can get a video together of them all. Nice job though .
I remember one of the most exciting plays I saw was at ASUS ROG Winter 2012, with BlinG doing a storm drop vs Polt on antiga shipyard, you should add this to your next pimpest plays
On topic, it was really well done, perhaps a little dark in places, I think brighter with more colour would be better
Terrible editing. This could've been so much better, but thanks to color filters, flashy screens and bad zoomins it's impossible to judge wtf is going on. Music could've been better too, metal rarely works for these sorta clips.
The selection of clips was pretty good though. I suggest you just try to remake it, with good production in mind instead of how these things usually look like...
pretty okay... One of the really good thing about the old pimpest play videos was the minimal visual editing though. I think to really appreciate the games you need as little editing and "loud" music as possible, it seemed really over the top. Good clips for sure, but perhaps you should look back to the old ones for some reference for 2013, or if you're going to edit it needs to be really really well done like super 15
Can we retire "Pimpest" to the depths? Not a very good video either (pardon the honesty). I don't think some poorly produced content really deserves a thread.
It was a good effort and entertaining in places. Including typos in your videos can be a real turn off though, like MVP's usage of the "snip" ability in the first clip. Keep practicing ^^
Definitely Squirtle vs MVP takes the cake of the video, and probably best overall series of WoL. For me. But you definitely missed Kiwikaki vs Stephano IPL game. And Grubby vs Nerchio on WCS. Yes Im protoss.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I know and realize my editing sucked, i really overdone there everything^^ Shouldve used 3 or 4 effects more carefully, but im still learning and will hopefully do better for my next.
there are a lot of games which are very nice and could be called pimpest, i just had to pick some - couldnt bring in all. But maybe a part 2 will come with more games and better editing.
for the music its difficult to touch everyones taste, this is the music i like so i enjoyed using it, but maybe i should use more "neutral" music in the next one.... :D
Well for a only alot of hours it is nice work and thanks for thinking about poor Germans. I really miss pimpest play too *sigh*. Peoples standards have become so high, that nothing is good anymore and there is so much going on that no one has the time to really find the top plays. But it is best to have someone else double check your video, before making it public to avoid typos and confusing effects.
I had seen most of the clips already to that was a bit dissapointing to me also the video would have been better without any editing, the colours where to dark.
At 12.40 minutes, "What already done !?" Great work, maybe put the names for colors in mirror match-ups (per exemple in #3 Huk vs Naniwa") next time. Missed a few games but you have to make choices so I understand.
1) Its like om watching a reflection of myself its that dark. Make sure when you are editing that you test it first to have the correct gamma and brightness. 2) The music doesn't fit at all. 3) About music, make it sync with whats happening. Draw inspiration from well produced FPS game movies (Quake or CS 1.6) 4) MVP vs Squirtle, it really really annoyed me when the commentary from tastosis just gets cut off and then back. Its a hype moment and you just killed if off completely by doing that 5) Instead of just showing off what pro players have done, i suggest doing stuff for the community. Let lesser known/complete unknown players submit replays with timestamps of "pimpest" plays (I hate that term). Gives them some much needed recognition.
Hate the music and Idra leaving vs MMA is not Pimpest play, also there are so many good ones left out. Some good, a lot of nostalgia, watched it till end.
Not a big fan of the editing. Effects are very rarely ever needed in game video editing, especially since the small details are the main attraction of these clips.
Still, thanks for the effort in putting these clips together. Next time use your own eye when you're editing clips, sit down and judge whether or not what you're trying to show off is enhanced or distracted by the effects you've chosen.
too dark. Some of the plays were pretty standard. BUt you missed probably the best play of the year. Nerchio Vs. Yonghwa Homestory Cup 5. Game 5 ( I believe) He defened his hatchery against DT's wtih drones. And didn't have detection yet. Crazy hatchery block.
when he did that. you knew Nerchio was just on a different level than younghwa. (at least back then)
Certainly a call back to the old pimpest plays. It felt even a bit nostalgic since I've seen 95% of the clips live unlike the brood war ones. (I still watch those too.)
A lot of people are pointing out the darkness filter, which I agree isn't really needed. Music choice, you aren't always going to win and I feel that type of metal fits with the "pimpest plays" theme. The text was kinda meh, but the transitions were pretty good. You can always redo it if you feel the need to
About the Dark Templer scene (Nerchio vs YoungHwa): I planed to put this one in too and as you can see its in the replaypack i uploaded, but at the end i totally forgot that game - i could beat myself for that -.- >.<
AGAIN: Thanks for all the good and bad feedback, it really helps me alot!
This is cool. I really love the ambition and the general idea. But the ambition is your downfall though. I believe you had more focus on making the video awesome with effects rather than content. Which is missing the point. But dont get me wrong, I am not pooping on your production, I am trying to give you tips for the future!
Things to think about next time (because I really hope you keep this up, the idea is awesome, but you need to polish it):
1: Too much material to cover: 3 years is waaaaay to much material to cover in one video, you should have done one for each year at tops. You missed some of the pimpest plays over the years (in my oppinion ofcourse, but I believe may would agree). 2: Keep awesome looking effects where they belong: Some effects (and screen cutouts), even though they are beautiful, it makes it hard to appreciate the pimpness of the plays at almost every occation in the video. Place video effects and unrelated awesomness in between the clips that show pimpness. That way the effects are more lovable and the pimpest plays more lovable. 3: Keep it to the original speed: It's hard to understand what happens when you speed up the gamespeed in a video, and again, it's hard to appreciate the pimpness unless you relive the play at the original speed. 4: Music sync: Who doesn't love music sync! It's awesome! You have done that really well in this video, but again, keep it where it belongs. Do not edit the actual video to match the sound by cutting out important stuff, speeding the clip or slowing the clip. You gotta match it by using longer/shorter clips (where it is possible, so you don't cut out important scenes) or do not audio-sync at all. Priority number one must always be the pimpest play!
All this comes from me with good intent and I really hope you can take it constructivly. I love this kind of videos and I really hope you dig deeper into this and perfect your already good skills!
Anyone remember the game on cloud kingdom where a top korean (terran) kept rebuilding a supply depot everytime it went down to rewall at the 3rd base location ?
that was really epic cant remember who it was, but i think it was prolly 2-3month ago.

WoW this is the kind of feedback i love to see :D It will really help me thanks! And to your "hope": Yes i will keep doing it and hopefully will get better in that kind of stuff, posts like yours make me get motivated (because thats all you need) even more :D

Glad I could help!
I also forgot to mention cropping. Dont do it! Mini-map is a vital part in understanding what happens in the game, even if there's a crazy ass micro bit that's going on, because questions always arise "is it a base-race? is it 5? 10? or even 25minutes into the game?" etc.
This weird darkness makes it very unpleasant to watch the video. Also I think most of the stuff is already in other videos, not very original. Other than that, average video I guess.
You don't see the brood war ones say "good marine control". You don't see soccer (aka football) highlight videos label plays. You don't see NBA basketball best plays label stuff. *edit: this is a little unfair, some of the brood war pimpest plays give names. But try to be a little better than "biggest air battle" or overuse of "epic". A lot of the brood war videos that name stuff go for like "boxer's ninja proxy" or "willpower hold lurkers" or something to that end).
basically don't label the play or "huge air battle", just label the game ("X vs Y 2011"). Keep it as simple as possible. The play is supposed to speak for itself
stopped watching at idra moment because you can't have pimp plays mixed with silly moments or stupid moments (of which there were ones earlier in the video)
I think it's bad to be honest, independent of issues with darkness. Poor selection and against the spirit of pimpest play/highlight videos.
It's a good attempt but the post production often makes it difficult to see what's going on. Also, I don't understand why a lot of these clips made it in; pimpest plays is supposed to be about a particularly good strategy, piece of micro or specific mind game. Things like Idra leaving vs Bomber, or that TT1 base trade don't belong in this list. Mostly the clips were appropriate however.

I think i know what you mean but i dont agree in all points (but in some). You compare Starcraft with soccer and other stuff. I dont think its legit. Starcraft is much more abstract and harder to understand than a cool soccermove. I always noticed in the BroodWar ones that for scenes i didnt see before the understanding what happened is really difficult. so I think the labels are needed here for guys who dont know the games they (the scenes) are from. but i guess my labels a shit and its true. I shouldnt use words that judge the plays like "epic", "strong" and so on, i shouldve stayed objective and just label by describing. in this point youre right but if i delete the labels completely for some scenes its hard to understand whats happening.
anyways a good tip helped me a lot, i will keep an eye about this next time
Really cool video. You just forgert Darkforce vs Bratok long time ago with the first mass use of ghost against zerg where Darkforce used mindcontrol on one ghost to EMP all the other
Before i watch im just going to say this. I dont believe it will be anywhere close to BW pimpest plays. Beacuse those were some pimpest plays I dont even think are possible in sc2.
After watching some actions didnt really belong in "pimpest plays" (idra leaving vs mma, kyrix vs mkp micro..). But as other pointed out they are highly repetetive on other videos. Video was too dark for my taste. The texts introducing the actions sometimes overlapped with them so we actually missed some of it (happy marine split come to mind). Some really good plays missed (sase holding baneling bust), but thats because you took 3years and wanted to make single video. I think one year would be better. The music was good and fitting i feel.
I watched the whole video and enjoyed it as a compilation, but not as a video. Good choices of moments to show, but overproduced, I don't personally think the effects make it unwatchable as some seem to, a bit of editing can make a video more memorable and outstanding, but in this case it backfired a bit. It would be better labeled as "Best Moments" rather than "Pimpest Plays" with stuff like Idra GGing, that long but inefficient stalker micro, and that extremely long zergling vs zealot base race, those are interesting stuff, but not pimp plays. Sticking to the casters and game sound would have been better than playing your favourite music over it, a lot of people are gonna have different music tastes and enjoy it less. (fwiw, I think it feels very un-starcrafty, that it's the same band playing almost every song, and guys, it's not metal, it's much closer to punk or mainstream rock) But I liked the clips shown, would have been great with some links when possible, to be able to watch the whole matches.
Missing some good plays from players like squirtle (micro vs bboong), leenock's triple infestor, kiwikaki/ mc's air play, some nydus plays, .. and yeah as the majority said, the vid is a bit dark and some useless clips in it (like idra leaving a game..).
It feels like you based a lot on foreign scene, dunno why.
Personally I think that Moon's baneling bomb vs Slush isn't his "pimpest".
The sickest one for sure for me was just a week or so later vs Bomber at DH Summer in the semi-final on Tal'darim. Baiting Bomber so hard and burrowing midfight to win a lost battle. Saw that live and had the sickest chills as a zerg player ever. Until Life, at least.
I love the effort, but I think it's a bit over-edited. Let the stories and plays shine through - the weird contrast colors and camera movements / pace changes were really distracting and sometimes made the stories confusing. More of the original commentary would have been fine to give us some context (ex. "that is also not a good use of a third command center" "must have been trying to kill the rocks" (paraphrasing) would have been good to have when they killed their own CC, otherwise we're not sure what's going on). It feels like you expected everyone to have seen all these games already, and you probably shouldn't assume that when making one of these videos.
Sorry for being a such a negative nancy, but I miss the BW pimpest plays and everything else about professional BW nothing quiet like it anymore and nothing can ever replicated it's success or how awesome it was again or even come close to it for that matter *sob*

I know how you feel... While I enjoy the SSL, the TLS and Gambits cup it still doesn't compare to how good the professional scene was... I would love to see a pimpest play made for the first half of 2012.
The fact that the next SSL will be held where the last OSL concluded and that Sonic managed to get Yellow and NaDa to play a legends match gives me a little bit of hope that we might just see another real pimpest plays in 2014

Omg yeah, I was watching that live it was 100% epic!
Great video for starters! Though, it could be better. As I used to edit shit like this all the time back in the CS 1.6 glory days, here are some tips I'd give:
Shorten your text. Telling a story 3 or 4 words at a time is annoying. Keep it short and sweet. If you must tell a story, it's better to use a paragraph in one scene than several scenes and few words at a time.
Adjust the colors. There is an option in every video program called "Color BALANCE"...use it to balance the colors, and then enhance some slightly.
Use cut-scenes. Instead of fast-forwarding and showing everything leading up to the scene it's cleaner-cut to just jump right into the scene. If you must show stuff prior to the scene-in-question, just use regular speed. (This one is iffy when dealing with SC2 as some displays of skill are over a longer period of time. I just personally hate the use of fast-forward, it seems tacky and lazy.)
Use animations for introductions. Even if your editing isn't professional, you could still animate the introduction a bit with built-in text effects and color effects to distinguish each scene, or player, or race rather than leaving plain-jane, white text to do the job. Here's an example of what I used to use when I made ESEA Clips of the Week.
This is an example of my work I couldn't find much more because most of my clips are physically on a harddrive, and because it was soo long ago. Overall, great start. I realize that editing videos isn't the same for every game, scene, movie, or clip. But these are some general tips I could give you to help you improve your videos.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't stand watching more than 2 minutes of this. The editing was just... bad. The filters and level adjustments just made it impossible to watch.
I've made several movies of this kind myself, and I remember experimenting a lot with color correction, gamma and levels myself. Fortunately, I grew out of that habit as time went on. Hopefully you'll do the same. It's a phase everyone goes through it seems :D
For the music I can't really complain. Everyone got different taste in music I guess.
you missed the kiwikaki vs stephano where kiwikaki set the new standard of archon toilet.
AND you missed some epic MMA vs DRG games, MVP vs July
I really enjoyed it though, missed some semi important games I think you should've included but the amout of amazing plays out there is to much so I doubt it'd be possible to fill em all in one video.
Really disappointed with the video quality of this. The colors seemed all wrong and caused me to focus on all the things that were wrong instead of actually focusing on the pimpest plays T.T;
I'd much rather have seen normal resolutions with normal colors ^^;;
Did this guy even watch his own video before publishing this?? I admire his passion and effort to make a video like this, but come on... I've never had such a bad headache while watching an sc video. -_-
I thought I did a pretty good job managing that thread by myself, and it seemed to be extremely popular, I can't remember how to check how many "Views" a thread got, but I remember it being over 11 thousand last time i checked (which would have been 2 years ago)
EDIT 02: Figured out the views thing, as of right now it has 35194 views which makes it the "Most popular" pimpest plays thread for sc2 to date. Again, it's great you took the time to make this and contribute to the community, but watch your mouth.
Good video, but some more editing would make this video even more memorable. I can't really say much more than has already been said. Keep practicing! I'm sure these will get better as your editing skills improve and with HotS creating even more epic moments.
Remember watching the BW pimpest plays-videos a while after SC2 came out and felt that BW was way superior. Over the years there sure are some epic moments in SC2 as well. Really nice nostalgia since I've seen most of them already. Although I didn´t like some of the editing but it was a really nice video, thanks!
