It looks like Japan has started their own league system for intrepid Starcraft 2 players in the country. The format is split into seasons of 6-weeks each and split into three classes of competition that all run concurrently. The league starts on May 6th.
Tournaments will be streamed on http://www.twitch.tv/japanesports
The first is the open class, which takes place every Tuesday at 9pm JST in the form of 4-man single-elimination Bo3 tournaments. Each tournament distributes points to its participants based off of placement. 1st place 5 pts, 2nd place 3 pts, 3rd place 2 pts, 4th place 1 pt. Once you get at least 10 league points, you are eligible to participate in the second stage.
The second stage is the master league, which takes place every other Sunday at 9pm JST in the form of 4-man round robin Bo3 tournaments. Similarly to the open league, you receive points based off of placement. 1st place 5 pts, 2nd place 3pts, 3rd place 2 pts, 4th place 1 pt. The top 4 players by point-ranking are eligible to participate in the third stage. For Season 0, entry is limited to players who have reached Master's League or higher on any server, but for future seasons, you will be able to enter based off of your league points you've received in the open class.
The third stage is the premier league, which also takes place every other Sunday at 9pm JST on the weeks that the master league tournaments are not held. The tournament format is a series of 4-man round robin Bo3 tournaments. Winners of these round robin matches compete in a playoff each season to determine the victor of the season. The victor of each season will get an invite to a LAN finals to take place in January 2014.

Hmm, interesting. I thought Japan's gambling laws mostly deterred competitive gaming over there - but maybe I was mistaken? Either way, cool to see another region hop in to SC!
|
A really surprising change in JP. I know that JP is hardcore console gaming, PC is very rare there but if SC2 goes big, there might be hope.

Huh? That can't be the case as they have a huge competitive fighting game scene
|
good for Japan. I thought theyd never catch up with the rest of the world.
|
Excellent news, can't wait to see what comes out of it.
|
Excellent news actually, would be awesome to see Japan attend the global SC2 scene.
|
Cool. Very happy for Japan!
|
Good news ! Hopefully it will be a real good league and japanese players can get some exposure out of this!
|
|
Beautiful. We need more Japanese culture in the SC2 scene
|
Maybe Kuroa will play in it, I was always curious at the lack of well known Japanese players.
|
They should invite all the Koreans with GSL wins to help grow their scene, increase their skill level and develop their eco system. They should allow anyone without a realistic chance to sign up, too, so they can model themselves after perfection, MLG.
Is it possible for a NA to choose the Japan region, or are they not playing "make believe"?
|
Cool, glad to see everything expanding!

hooray one step closer to a sports manga based around competitive starcraft

I've heard the same thing about the gambling laws and that FGC pros in Japan often compete for small amounts of money, or prizes/food/store points.

Hopefully I'll see more out of Breek and Nemuke now. I'd like to watch if they have streams.

Wow in Japan! Esports making progress! :D

Good Japan, let the ESPORTS flow through you!

I still cant believe they dont dominate gaming scene. I always thought of them as of land of computers/technics. I really hope China and Japan can soon surpass Korea in sc2

Outside of Korea, Japan has pretty much the biggest eSports scene, it's just for fighting games :p

Japan are pretty big when it comes to fighting games and China has always had a huge fanbase and playerbase for DotA (and also WarCraft 3). "gaming scene" is in no way, shape or form limited to SC2.
This is pretty cool news, will definitely try to tune in if it's not inconvenient schedule-wise. Breek and Nemuke used to be pretty good ye? ^^

Wow, nice to see. I wasn't sure if they'd start something for SC2 in Japan after nothing really happened during WoL.

Whenever I think of Japan in StarCraft I think of that guy who beat Machine at WCG one year with hydras in ZvZ.
Cool to see a tournament pop up.
|
If they can make Jap players as good as their fighting game players that would be awesome
|
This is really awesome in my opinion. I have always loved all things Japanese especially their competitive gaming. I look forward to how strong their SC2 crowd is.

Awesome stuff! I hope they become international contenders~

They're the mecca of gaming in general. I don't think they care much about competitive gaming when they have such a large gaming industry in general.

I didnt think it was because of gambling laws but simply because arcade games and home gaming consoles are just way more popular.

They are competitive. PC gaming is just not common over there. With a few exceptions (MMOs and such) PC "gaming" in Japan usually means visual novels and porn. Historically the biggest eSports (CS, Quake, BW, WC3, DotA etc) are more often than not PC games and so have had little following in Japan. They do have a thriving arcade scene and so do very well when it comes to fighting games. The Japanese SC2 community probably consists of a small number of hardcores.

Fantastic stuff, really hope to see some Japanese gamers getting into StarCraft!!

Interesting to see this. I'm not actually sure how good Japanese players are at all. I'd watch it just for curiosity's sake, but I have somewhat low expectations from how little I've seen JP in tournaments.
Also, thanks for the translation and posting the format. I actually think it's a pretty good league. WCS NA/EU should just use the same system ^_~

There is this website which has been running for a long time, and other websites for the Japanese Starcraft scene. Interest has never really been the problem, it's just the fact that its not a sustainable career in Japan. Even fighting games are not in eSports, so they are typically only competitive in arcades. A professional scene has never been possible, but many have tried over these long years.
This tournament is great news for Japan. If this is successful, hopefully they'll start getting some real money involved. All Japan needs is money. Sustainable careers. You'll see plenty of Japanese progamers at that point.

It's much less that competitive gaming is not popular, much more that PC gaming is not that popular for competitive gaming.
for the Japanese, multiplayer gaming is still very much an in person social experience, this is why it's done more in arcades or in public places with handhelds.

How long have you been living in Japan? Or did you just put your country to "Japan" for fun? It's not too far off, that playing PC games is linked to Erotic Games in Japan. Anime like "Ore no imouto ga konnani kawaii wake ga nai" show, in this case, a girl hording Erotic games and other stuff and lending it to her brother. "Boku ha tomodachi ga sukunai" also has a girl that plays "Eroge" on her notebook. Also it seems like families rather have notebooks than a normal computer, probably because of the limited space they get in their apartments.
Anyway, happy to hear that Japan is starting to develop "E-Sports". Fighting games or arcade games in general are not held with price money, but goods for the first place finisher. When I went to Tougeki 2010, the winners got 1 Hori Real Arcade Pro VX Arcade as their price. A friend of mine also told me that "DUNE", a Japanese KoF player, had organized a tournament with sponsorship and price money.

There is a love-hate relationship between the two countries. You can't just say that they are utter enemies....
They have a lot of history, but the cultures love each other. There is constant trade and exchanging influences. Many Japanese study Korean and vice versa. They dislike each other as far as history is concerned, but individuals don't really care about that, so overall it's easier to say that they like each other.

When I was there I checked a huge store in Japan that sold computer games and they didn't even have Starcraft so I wouldn't expect a high level of gameplay.
|
Saying that Japan hates Korea is silly. I doubt most people who live in Japan actually care much about who the islands belong to. I also think, even with that silly difference, that no Japanese would hate a Korean. Kpop is actually quite popular in Japan. Anyway, I definitely want to see some Japanese success here! I hope they won't be as neglected as the Chinese scene! (Oh the drama!)

Of course! Every country has extremists that reject and hate everything that isn't their nation. America has it and it's called the Republican media that shoves misinformation down people's throats. Does that mean every citizen that lives here thinks like they do? To seriously post shit like this is degrading to a population. So if i understood this correctly its online in (SEA region?) and they will all be online qualifiers untill the winner gets to go to LAN right ? Also if you would lose your group and not be able to go to stage 3, its possible to play in it the next week ?
Then stage 3 is all about winning to qualify to a playoff? sorry for being slow :D

I went to a gsl finals barcraft in tokyo a number of months ago and met the type gaming team, dont recall a player named Real. A buddy of mine is good friends with a few of them, ill have to ask him.
Gambling is illegal here in japan, but there are ways around it. They dont consider this kind of gaming gambling though. Fighting games are just a drop in the bucket here. Arcades everywhere, always packed, and so many crazy games. Lots of multiplayer games too. You can find like 20 guys sittng at a giant screen doing horse racing, tons of card gsmes, fighting games. Awesome arcades here... and more manga and anime than you could ever possibly hope to consume. Interesting culture...

I didn't base it on those 2 Anime shows, but gave them as an example. From my experience there is still a quite negative image of people playing video games in Japan (which anime also depict. Dunno if I have ever seen a Gamer or PC Programmer shown as a super awesome person in an Anime). PCs were mainly used for eroge or other adult stuff, that was not allowed on consoles. Even the huge fighting game community doesn't get much love. There are much more sponsored players in the US or Europe than in Japan, even though the Japanese dominate pretty much every game.
Anyway, GL to the Japanese guys. Hope they can make something happen

From your examples listed, I'm not even going to go into it because you sound like some weaboo that seems to have some strange view of Japan from your weird ass animes and is stating it as a fact when it is actually just some obscure observation that no one I have spoken to even has ever heard of before.
I'm going to take you saying "seems like families have notebooks than normal computers" to mean you've never actually been to Japan or have only visited for a short time. In Kanagawa and Tokyo at least, everyone I know has a desktop computer. Even my friends who live in little apartments still have room for computers. Hell, even my girlfriend's mother has her own PC. Japanese houses and apartments/mansions are small yes, but small enough to not have room for a computer? That is another telltale that A. you either have never actually been to Japan, or B. you went to some desolate prefecture that shouldn't be generalized as all of Japan.
So to answer your question, no, I didn't just put Japan as my country for fun. Thanks for asking though.

I wrote "seems like" as all my friends in Japan use a notebook instead of a PC, some families of my friends even use it for the whole family, aka it's the only computer in the apartment. Did not want to generalize something I cannot back up by statistics. If you have more information on that subject, I would be very interested in it. Japanese sources are fine as well. And I've lived in Japan for more than 8 years now.
I work in Akihabara (the video games, electronic town in Tokyo for those who don't know) and I have to agree a majority of PC games sold here are erotic games (can we even call this a game ?). It doesn't mean PC gaming is not popular at all here, but associating PC games in Japan with porn is not a mistake imho.
Recently the Playstation/Xbox games are more often on PC so I wouldn't be surprised if more japanese switch to play with their PC instead. However, japanese youngsters often live in a 20 square meters 1 room appartment with tatami flooring and not much furniture (at least nothing big like a desk). They like to play sitting on the futon with the TV often set directly on the floor, so playing with a mouse + keyboard is not really convenient in this case.

Well, even someone who has always lived in Japan can't be sure about how popular notebooks are vs desktops, so the "seems like" sounds legit. However I am pretty sure notebooks have a bigger market share here compared to Europe for instance (based on how many notebooks are shown compared to desktops in big shops such as Yodobashi Camera + own experience).
Obviously it depends on who you know in Japan. If you speak about married persons with a house, obviously they have room for a desktop PC, if you are considering younger people they may live in a 1-room. In some small households, even in Tokyo, you will have mostly tatami rooms with no desk. I think the amount of families with these old fashioned appartments is constantly decreasing, so that the amount of desktops is likely to increase in that regard. So well, maybe the children born in these households will be more likely to get into PC gaming, but habits in Japan are hard to change.

But actually almost every japanese plays with the US version of the game. What surprises me the most about hearing this is that as far as I know there's no Japanese language version of Starcraft II - or any other Blizzard game here, for that matter. Never been quite sure as to why that's the case.
It's definitely true in my experience that PC gaming isn't nearly as big as handheld or console gaming, but I'd stop short of characterizing all computer gaming as eroge. If you only used Akihabara or Denden Town as examples, then yeah, maybe. There is from what I can see a definite lack of Japanese-made PC games and they don't tend to like the Western ones that are made, so there's not a whole lot of market at the moment.

Starcraft was released in Japan but BW wasn't.

I'm going to take you saying " seems like families have notebooks than normal computers" to mean you've never actually been to Japan or have only visited for a short time.

In your first post it's almost like your trying to educate the reader. You force your opinion and so called "knowledge" of Japan on others and pretend it's fact. And here we are: forum posting 101
Back on Topic:
I'm a huge fan of Competitive Gaming in general (SC2, DOTA, Fighting Games) and I've always thought japanese players with their hard work and dedication (comparable to Korean players) could definitely translate those skills to more mediatized games such as SC2 or Mobas. I'm really glad to finally see it happening and I hope this could help dynamize the asian scene outside of Korea.

I didn't say all computer gaming in Japan was eroge of course, I just said it's big enough to be somewhat associated to the image of PC gaming in Japan. And well, imo Akiba must be at least representative of a big part of gaming in Japan. But yes, there are some other japanese popular games on PC (Monster Hunter and FFXI for instance). Until recently it was actually funny to see these FFXI benchmarks running on gaming PCs in shops here, as if FFXI and its antique graphics would be able to benchmark a recent PC ^^
But now some good hardware shops (Tsukumo, Ark) in Akiba have pretty nice gamer hardware (headsets, mouse, keyboards, mouse cable holders, chairs...). Most of them with some foreign game playable (often it's an FPS).
When WoL was released I remember there were signs announcing it in some streets near the shops selling it. This is why more recently with HotS, I actually searched a bit for an EU version of HotS (as my WoL was EU I need to upgrade with an EU box version). I went to a shop that appeared to be selling like 95% of PC games in eroge and 5% in foreign games, so that the guy didn't even seem to know SC2... I didn't search too long but in the area I was there were tons of eroge and no trace of HotS (well it was before the release but I was looking for some announcement). I think that was the wrong place to get my game but still, pretty disapointing (that's where I remember seeing these SC2 signs when WoL was released).

That's very interesting to hear. Was there any competitive sc1 scene ? Because if it didn't it means that the success of a SC2 pro scene in Japan will only be assured by SC2 alone without the whole broodwar legacy, without any big names... Only Heart of the Swarm.

When I went to Tougeki 2010, the winners got 1 Hori Real Arcade Pro VX Arcade as their price. You just used 2 comedy (one completely anime/otaku as whole subject) anime as proof? Oh man, if we based off every country on 2 shows you happen to saw form there then i guess watching a show like trailer park boys means nobody in America has a real house and everyone lives in a trailer right. Do you have any idea how insane your logic is?
I don't know why that other guy says such stupid things but you are totally right. In japan 70% of all sold PC games are eroge or visual novels. There are a few exceptions, like S;G but mostly they do Rancer Hatoful, etc.
Not like I'm not rooting for SCtoo over there but their gaming culture comes from arcades and consoles, that's just the way it is.

I propose there be anime graphics for starcraft 2 with cell-shading. It will look like an episode of CarbotAnimation's Starcrafts.

I'm so excited for this. When I studied abroad in Japan I saw a lot of SC2 since all the time zones lined up perfectly! I'd be able to start watching American and European tournaments in the morning and such and also catch the GSL since it's in the same time zone as Korea. I always wondered why I didn't see many Japanese pro gamers in the international scene at all since I't so so close to Korea. Anyway, I hope to see their scene grow more and more!

I'm surprised to find so many Japan-knowers/Japanese-speakers here. I'd figure one would find more people interested in Korea. "Yokohama" are you a fellow Yokohama:er? : D
At the discussion whether PC = eroge or not, I'd say having a PC is not weird at all (where would you otherwise look at Outlook Express?). However "playing games on PC" is quite "nerdy". Even if it isn't eroge, it is way more "nerdy" than playing games on console or at the arcade. My view of it is that being "nerdy" is becomming more and more okay, but it still looked down upon by majority of the society.

Blizzard please make a Japanese language pack for SC2. There are some many people who dont start playing because they do not understand English.

I think that the we play on NA because judgement of players skill is based on NA ladder ranking. Though I am agreed with you that KR should be the better option.

Like iNcontroL keeps on saying, Terran, you've got a free scouting resource. Instead of being greedy by using all that command center energy on mules, use them on scans if you feel something's weird.
Tempest carrier should be pretty easy to sniff out especially if you see the fleet beacon and two stargates, as well as a weirdly tiny Protoss main army.
