As was announced in This Thread last week Blizzard was in the process of internally testing their Desktop App.
Well it looks like the time has arrived for the first wave of beta invites! + Show Spoiler +
First Impressions At first look the interface comes across very clean and user friendly. + Show Spoiler +
You can also currently see any Real ID friends playing a specific game (Character Friends) are not currently shown (which sucks since 90% of my friend list are character only). Check out the right-side of the image below: + Show Spoiler +
Likes: I especially like that the app automatically updates all games rather than having to launch them separately. In this case, since I haven't played D3 in quite some time it started downloading updates to bring it up-to-date.
Another feature that jumped out to me as a positive is that the drop-down box for global play also included in the Desktop App.
Development Areas: One thing I noticed right away that's missing and I hope to see added: - Support for "Classic Games": WC1/2/3, D1/2, and even classic Blizzard/Silicon & Synapse games (Rock n' Roll Racing...etc). This might be unlikely but would still be pretty cool not to mention add potential revenue for $4.99 downloads of old school Snes games (which I'd be more than happy to buy).
I'm pretty excited for this and hopefully everyone else is as well.
I'm currently downloading the client and will post further updates here with more updates/features...etc. as I discover them. Also, if you've received an beta invite then I encourage you to share your feedback/experiences here as well.
Posted in SC2 General as this is where the internal testing thread was located...

Oh I might have to get in on that.

I hope I get into the beta :O I had my beta profile updated 2 weeks ago when I found out about the blizzard steam. I want it so bad >_<
Watch this turn out like HOTS for me where I get in with like 2 months before it closes :<

2 months? I'd say that would be lucky... for WoL i got in on the last day of the beta. Played more games that day than any other. Looks interesting but I hope it isn't a requirement.

Can you share a download link?

There is this 800 yr old technology that has a little check box during or at the end of installation that says "create desktop icon". That's all you should need lol.

The reason for this desktop app seems a little lost on you.

Chat with people? Why the hell would you need to do that anyway? Certainly not in diablo 3 and sc2 you dont.

OP, is there a chat function to talk to friends who have the SCII client on? I would love it if I didn't actually have to have SCII running in order to talk to clanmates and such.

If you really cared that much, you would be using facebook or skype. Unless you didnt know about those 2 things, then I take my comment back. But yeah, you dont need this garbage to chat w/ people.

So wait, the its bad that they are adding the chat feature from steam where I can chat right from my desktop with anyone playing Dota 2 and see if they have an open slot in their group or want to play? Because that is the main reason I love playing some Dota, because its easy to find out who is playing and if they want to play.

We already have a TS server, but it's already challenging enough to make sure everyone gets on there. It's much easier with SCII since that's the reason we all came together anyways. Why wouuld I want to ensure that everyone is on Skype or FB? I don't use the former, and I recently delted the latter anyways. This would be much easier and centralized for SCII related matters.

There is not currently chat support...However, this is a big discussion already on the beta forum and as many of the users there have noted, the groundwork for chat is already there so it should be implemented in the near future.

I don't know what other things should be there if not integrated chat. Autoupdate is nice, but I don't need application to update from 1 to max 3 games from blizzard.

In the Picture , you can see : Welcome , Mythandier. Is this the sc2 name , Diablo Name , or a nickname you chose in the setup ?
Keep posting stuff , this looks badass !

This looks cool. I hope I get an invite!
+ Show Spoiler +Completely unrelated, but I really envy your download speed. I get a measly 300 KB/s

Keep posting stuff , this looks badass ! The name you see there is my "Battletag" which is the name I chose to represent me on Battle.net. You can find this by going to your account summary page in battle.net. Hope that helps
I'll continue posting stuff as it becomes available.

Ahhhh, centralized hub for all my Blizzard games. Finally! Obviously, chat better be implemented or there won't be a ton of point to this. This first stage is probably just to make sure all the core functionality is working properly. I hope, anyway.
|
I really hope you can just start this thing up and see who is online, chat etc. I need to know whether to turn on my gaming PC if friends are on. :p

Character friends are not currently supported. I've added a picture to the OP and will continue to update as it develops.

Just one question and I`m sorry if it was posted already. Do you know if there is ingame chat from the desktop client, aka I could talk to my sc2 team while not actually being in the game?
|
I'd like it to have chat channels, like, i don't have to be in game to see who is online from my clan and to ask them for practice.
|
On June 11 2013 07:36 czaku wrote: I'd like it to have chat channels, like, i don't have to be in game to see who is online from my clan and to ask them for practice.
Or be able to talk to my b.net friends while watching an SCII tourney.
|
It would be so cool if the classic games could use this too. It would be easier to get my friend who plays BW into SCII.
|
I'm gonna get on this when I build my new computer. It looks like a great way to bring socialness to b.net.
|
Where can I register for beta? There's nothing in my beta profile settings.
|
Pretty sure they said all you needed to do was opt into the beta for any of the game universes and you were opted into the beta for the desktop client. Cant remember where I read this though.

I can confirm this. But all you have to do (to the poster above you) is look for the blog post on battle.net web page.
Found it! https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/battlenet-desktop-app-faq

I should buy D3 i guess lol

No. No you should not.

On July 03 2013 22:51 ArhK wrote:No. No you should not.
Yeah, you're better off getting Binding of Isaac. That has more randomization and better weapons and customization and challenge than D3. And better writing.
|
Have you guys tried D3 lately? I think it was worth the money. It was definitely not as good as D2, but it's entertaining, and with the new Monster Power thing, it's actually a challenge as well!
|
D3 train has left station long ago I think.
I'm sure not everyone that uses b.net also uses steam, but people are aware there's an option to add a 3rd party executable to your steam library right? I already have d3/sc2 added so if I'm in game my steam friends can see, and since I'm in the game I have b.net list.
As an optional tool I don't see anything wrong with this though for people that want to use it

Doesn't having Steam running eat up bandwidth, though, along with other resources? From my understanding, SC2 relies more on your CPU (and only 2 cores even though I have an i7. Goddammit blizzard).

LOL that was the most idiotic post I've seen in a while, ishyishy made my day.

Sadly there is no chat feature. Currently the best thing about this desktop app is the ability to log in once and be able to access any region. I wouldn't mind if it worked in the way steam works. A lot of the time on steam I hop into a game when I see a friend start playing it (Dota2/CS/etc). And it's nice to be able to invite people to games that are 'Online' but not necessarily in the game you are playing. I'd probably play a lot more D3 and SC2 if I could just have some sort of desktop chat and see what friends are doing and then join them, rather than consciously starting a specific game and checking to see what everyone is doing.

Do you have a download link to the client?

I don't think it would matter as you wouldn't be able to log in if you aren't in the beta?

I got in the beta, and I like a lot about it, but there's no chat! Then it's pretty pointless for me.

You can login once in SC2 already, and have access to any region. There's a less than obvious feature if you pull up the menu, and click the Globe thing in the upper right of the window(i think), it will change your region without you having to relogin.
Though, the rest of the features do sound nice.

Please tell me this thing finally has an invisible mode.
|
Meh not so keen on it, integrate it with steam or something please blizzard and then I'll care. For now its just quick launcher to a very limited collection of games.
|
Who cares really. Blizzard games are absolute trash. I haven't touched SC2 or D3 for a long time. Long gone are the days of quality games from Blizzard. Just trash.
Makes me sad thinking about how low they've gotten.

aww man it doesn't support BW. I was hoping it would help influence my friend who has BW to play SC2.
