They could've just asked foreign teams to join in if they really needed the numbers. I'm sure a few would've wanted to get in either for experience or to promote themselves.

Don't. WCS and the EU scene are still strong. SC2 will be there.
Prime is trying to join KeSPA. They are recruiting a League of Legends team and are trying to get into the LoL Proleague most likely.
MVP is no surprise. Ozone was last season's OGN Champions (LoL's "Code S") and are going to the world finals. They're by far the most lucrative asset the MVP team has, so they will get into KeSPA without much trouble.
LG-IM is the same. Have two League teams. Not as good as MVP, but their secondary team shows promise and they've been a mainstay in Champions for a long time.
To be honest, this GSTL is going to be really depressing and kinda pitiful. I hope for great games, though.

Teams have tried before. Its tough to keep a sqaud in korea if none of them are in the GSL, plus the infrastructure to run a team house is expensive and not many can afford it.
- Two teams without a sponsor - Three eSF teams - Previous season's champion and runner up leaving the tournament
How can this be anything but terrible? This is just, terrible. It's not even like Proleague is starting up again any time soon so IM MVP and Prime could have played in this before joining Kespa for 2014. I suppose the logical conclusion is that they didn't have a choice and had to leave in order to survive.

me too ;_; this is a truly depressing day for GOM, but seems like Kespa is making out ok, potentially getting 3 great teams. Artosis curse too strong. + Show Spoiler +
I can understand MVP, easily. MVP Ozone is one of the best LoL teams in a world, mega popular nowadays, and them not being in the LoL Proleague to stay in eSF would be a stupid move.
LG-IM don't have as good LoL teams, and their SC2 squad is much higher level, but I guess the money of being in the LoL Proleague and visibility to the sponsor would be good. Maybe if they can get into KeSPA then LG will start taking their sponsorship seriously.
The Prime not participating is the one that really boggles my mind. It's kind of a fuck you to MKP, Byun, Creator and everyone on their team. They don't have a LoL team right now and are just going through the recruiting process. I guess it would make sense if Prime can find a major sponsor, get picked up by KeSPA, and their LoL team turns out to be worth it, but right now Prime is a group with no team league anymore, only one relevant player in tournaments (Maru) and no League team.
sc2 is almost dead in korea, from what I hear? this move is like the worst possible thing. GSTL is now basically nonexistent, and without proleague to look forward, things look really grim.

Terrible for GSTL? Sure. For Korean SC2 scene? I don't think so, unifying the scene is the most important thing and this is (assuming IM, MVP and Prime really join SPL) very important step forward! And with the Kespa opening up, I also believe GOM will actually join them in the end and the unified teamleague will start from next year!

It's just the lack of teams that makes it sad.
Yeah and it seems it will be very stiff competition, all the teams basically have a shot at winning! Format looks awesome and everything. I have never cared for GSTL, but I will be watching this season!

It depends on if and when KeSPA will do a SC2 Proleague again.
While a CJ, KT, SKT, Khan, Stars, Jin Air, Prime, LG-IM, and MVP Proleague sounds fucking awesome, I'm pretty sure the act of not participating for all three teams is directly related to League of Legends and not SC2.

well, the thing is that IM and MVP mainly join kespa because of lol, not sc2. I think wax twittered earlier that korean teams would prefer it if their sc2 players would just switch to lol altogether.
it is really sad, since sc2 is really strong in europe, like ridiculously strong and thriving, but both the korean and na scenes are slowly withering away.

it's not dead it's just spread out right now, we need all the korean sc2 teams to be in 1 teamleague, or both teamleagues
Tbh I'm surprised Prime pulled out. They must be in desperate straits, given that, uh, they don't even have an LoL team yet and are not guaranteed to get a sponsor even through KeSPA.
I'm surprised Prime pulled out also. They're roster was already the 2nd weakest in GSTL, and too terran-heavy. Not to mention they came dead last, so I can't see them faring well in SPL.
Maybe if Creator, MKP, and Byun all simultaneously return to prime-form (dat pun) it could happen like when they won their first GSTL. They didn't seem too good at fostering new players.

thing is, will there be another sc2 proleague? and if there will be one, it will take at least half a year until it comes around again. in that time, basically most koreans will sit on their butts doing almost nothing, because there are only so many places in the WCS.

Yes I am pretty convinced it is true - they only go there because of LoL.
Imo, it is really shaping up towards unified SC2 scene. There were rumors that SC2 Proleague is delayed - that would make sense. Wait till GSTL is over, let also the other (interested) teams join SPL, GOM join Kespa and start the completely unified SC2 Proleague with like 12 teams sometimes around February/March next year with GOM and OGN hosting (or maybe GOM + SPOTV and OGN LoL only). Sounds awesome? I think it does!

The other way around actually, this is shaping up to be the best GSTL (for the people who are not strict fans of IM, MVP and Prime ^^)
Im so sad for the SC scene in korea. I have no problem with LoL but I would much prefer and RTS game dominating the scene. Now we have a Team League with 5 teams, 2 of which are problematic, while LoL is filling Footbal stadiums.
Also, Innovation will probably all-kill everybody.
That fruit map seems pretty interesting. Idk about those 500 min lemons though. At least we get a map with actual color instead of grey, black, or brown.

she is on GSTL roster. She needs to be there before R2 starts anyway, since they don't actually have any more zergs and assuming they also have the 'at least one player of every race' rule, it will have to be her.

blizzard can't force much to happen over there. Kespa is quasi governmental and controls a lot of broadcasting rights. They would kill SC2 before they allow blizz to take over like that.
It's fubnny because now higher personalities can't say LoL doesn't hurt us, because IM and MVP will not be part of GSTL because they want their LoL team to be part of proleague.
That's one of the first case of direct influence of LoL onto the SC2 scene that I know of. ( Like, one that is fact. )
wow that sucks team wise. On the bright side mouz is again my favorite team with no competition near em, helps channeling the inner fangirl. Love the maps as well.
Might also open the opportunity to troll some Proleague fans later, if there will be one and if IM and MVP will participate. But if Kespa really wants to cut teams down to 5-6 players, then I guess they want to make Sc2 a Solo thing. Which might mean GSTL would survive easily.
Oh gosh, and the worst part is that this looks like by far the best tournament format the GSTL has ever had. All-Star match? Individual Prizes? All-kill + Proleague format? Bo3 playoffs? Crazy fruit map? I get hyped just reading that. (the only thing that could be better imo is Bo7) And then...5 teams...
Oh well. I'm still more interested in a 5 team GSTL with this format than the previous 8 team ones, so at least they're still doing it.

When you think about it, this is actually really awesome. Like - what everyone says SC2 is bad at? Turtling and then few quick deathball engagements to end the game as opposed to constant movement around the map. Why is that? Mostly because of economy. Features like this will force players to actually move around the map and engage on a lot of places at the same time. I see what they aimed for, hopefully it works and more and more maps will keep on coming with something like this.

I think I really really really want to see some games on that map. Even if they made it as a joke I want to see some games on that map because it sounds awesome. Even if the logical person in me realizes it will most likely have same problem that Blizzards normal gold placement in middle of map has (it helps person ahead get more ahead because only they can take it) I still cant resist watching that map played at least once.
So we were hoping for a Proleague-GSTL fusion, but it seems GSTL will simply die and Proleague will be the one that is left. Which is fine by me.
Here is hoping that IM, Prime and MVP all join Proleague (which seems very likely except for maybe Prime), and that EGTL does too (not too likely though). Axiom-Acer are trapped in the wrong league for this season, but I guess they could join PL in the next season.
These days are becoming more and more interesting.
I'm pretty sure this GSTL season is to keep GOM's yearly ticket obligations, hopefully next year they scrap their yearly tickets (since it's pretty much useless) and hopefully a merge of proleague and GSTL.

Five teams, two of which barely have the requisite number of players in the roster. Not looking good. Ah well, I hope that Life will pick up the chance to catch up and all-kill once or twice.

Wait why are people so sad. It's sad to see IM and MVP leave ( and even Prime), but this lineup of teams looks delicious, the format is an absolute improvement, and I'm really looking forward to it. A fresh breath of fresh air over the WCS bollocks going on.

Hmm, 5 teams might not be so bad. Last season, there were a lot of complaints about the season dragging on for too long, and the teams are more equal now that we lost both the two best teams and 2 worst teams. Should be a close and tense season with a lot of new faces. I'm really excited!

The round robin is two rounds, so each team plays 8 matches in the regular season. So that's 20 regular season matches in total, which is only 8 less than in the last GSTL. At two matches a week it will take ten weeks to go through, plus however long the playoffs are, keeping in mind there will probably be breaks for the GSL Code S finals, the WCS Season Finals and Blizzcon.

Undead. Was dead, but now kinda alive. Oftentimes portrayed as walking corpses in search of live flesh and brains to consume.
Soul is a zombie since it kinda died by losing its sponsor and many of its core players, but is still kinda alive in GSTL running under what is essentially a skeleton crew of those left behind and foreign team Koreans.

Or the turtle Player just turtles right at the Lemons ...

Well sometimes being standard is all that matters. From my personal games on it (and those are a lot I have been using this map for customs since it was released on eu way back in wol) it offers really nice standard games. Dunno why a map has to be the sickest non standard super inovative one to be good/note worthy.
I think Arcade + Unranked should be f2p, if they'd care about kr they'd actually make the entire mp f2p in pc bangs.
Baffled at the prize pool. Did Hot6 commit to sponsoring before knowing how gimped this season will be? Feels like soul and azubu are just hanging on for the guaranteed $3k
I wonder what GOM will do to spice this season up since they have so few teams. Maybe they should have celebrity team matches like they have in golf and tennis.

Are you saying it was on and then it was removed or it was never on in the first place?
I can't confirm that, it's that the matches aren't on the schedule and all korean sites at this time (1 day till opening) that concerns me, but still I think it's just because it was announced on Saturday.

Wow. Nice catch. Massive disappointment there, really don't like that format its so dull.
So now there's no good team league left. And WCS has made the solo scene a mess. Seriously what in the hell is happening to SC2 this year?
At least we got a proper Code S again.
