Mr. Chae and DaejanG discussed about Next year's GSL plan (a bit sarcastically) during the casting of WCS season 3 finals(in Korean). Definitely, next year's GSL will be different from this year's. Maybe It will be again independent from WCS. And a bit of aggression of his on some other people (or some broadcast companies?)

Dajang: What's the plan for GSL next year?
Chae: Next year? It is very bright. We will do as we want next year. We will do as I want.
Daejang: Indeed, it is bright.
Chae: Yes, it is. Because we couldn't do as we wanted this year, yes, we had dissatisfaction. Now, we will do as we want. Be ready.
Daejang: It's a great good news.
Chae: (laughing) An shocking announcement. Gom will do as they want next year!
Daejang: At least we keep on.
Chae: Ofcourse we do.
Daejang: It' would be not appropriate if we someone says "we are quitting" on his own authority .
Chae: So, now, this is my thought. To say harsh, people who don't want to work actively, should better get out of the scene. People who will work hard, who want to work hard, need to get more opportunities, don't they? It's really hard to work with somebody that does not like to do the job. Just talking for mutual profits.
Could you expand on some of the thoughts in this post? Much of what has been translated seems quite vague.. what do they mean by GOM 'doing what they want'? Will they operate independently of WCS? And who do they speak of when they talk about a 'partner concerned with mutual profits'?

Did you read the original post? He's not sure and literally said what you just said.

Actually, what he said is quite vague itself. Korean people are arguing harshly on this. What is definite is that Chae did not like Blizzard's 2013 plan. Also, Most people think that it's a aggression on OGN that they did not show enough tries on SC2 this year that was not like they said early. Others say this is all about some Korean reporters that are extremely criticizing on SC2 who mostly always insists that SC2 has fallen in Korea.
The mutual profit part is like (whoever he was offensive against on this) "if you don't wanna work hard, you'd better quit for both of us because we get more opportunity, and you can do other things not wasting your time for what you don't really want to do."
People who don't want to work actively sounds like OGN, considering how disinterested they seemed doing the last OSL and the S1 Korean finals. If what I heard was right, there was not much TV coverage to speak of. On top of that they kicked most of proleague to SPOTV.
Maybe GOM doing what they want could also mean OGN is out of the picture and next year it will again be just GSL for Korea. Would be really good as GomTV does their thing so well. I wouldn't be shocked if Blizzard wasn't all that impressed with OGN either and would just let it go.
Doesn't matter. It all comes down to how much money Blizzard puts down for the GSL. Where do you think GOMtv got all the money in early days of GSL for those fancy 3D GSL intro, 3D movie screen for the finals, and cute kpop girls? It's obvious that they all came from Blizzard. If Blizzard stops supporting the GSL next year, GOM will move to other games.

Doesn't matter, GSL will do what they want. If GSL wants to be a bunch of retards and piss Blizzard off and make sure that they can't do SC2 tournaments anymore like you're suggesting, then they'll do it.
My opinion is that they are instead going to host some great events and that they are going to be smart and support the rebirth of stability in the Korean SC2 scene.
I personally would love a fully self sustaining GSL to start running during off seasons. Blizzard already said that they are going to clear more of next year's schedule to allow for more independently run tournaments, and that they'll support and cheer for those tournaments to do well. I want to see OGN take WCS, GOM continue GSL/GSTL, and KeSPA continue with ProLeague. Maybe KeSPA would even want to work closely with OGN to see the continuation of the StarLeague series. Anyways, something along these lines would be best imo. People saying no more WCS are rash and not thinking logically imo.
I don't understand the translation at all. I don't care if GSL is with WCS or not, but I do worry if it is not viewership will drop for GOMTV. They have done so much for the SC 2 community, it would be sad to see them left behind.

I think they can do both. I would like to see and GSL and a WCS both run by GOM. If Blizzard spaces the WCS out enough, GSL could run in the off seasons, allowing more events for people to compete in. There is no need for the two to even be connected at all.

That would shooting themselves in the foot. Tasteless remains a premium caster and some of his interviews recently lead me to think that he's still quite interested in casting games.

I might have missed something but i always thought that except the first 3 GSL's Blizzard didn't give anything anymore.

I don't think it has ever really be clear how Blizzard has supported GOM.tv. At the end of the day though, they need to their own thing to keep themselves above water.

Being negative for the sake of being negative and providing no reason? I have always found GOMs support for their viewers to be well above anyone else. Their IOS support is second to none and you can take any of their matches on the go any time you want.
So, Just guessing as it is hard to really get what he is talking about but...is he declaring war on Blizzard? Is GSL going back to it's own form? Also doesn't GSL have Dota 2? If that is the case he could just be talking about how excited he is for Dota 2 and that will become the main focus for Gom? Fighting Blizzard is tough because they probably have the right to just take the game away from Gom.

If Blizzard tries to take away Starcraft II from Gom, I would cackle maniacally for a few hours and then promptly die from an overload of stupidity.
I don't think Blizzard would be too sad if OGN agreed to run all WCS events through their starleagues. GOM could just continue on not being a part of Blizzard tournaments
Sounds like a really positive attitude. Vowing to give it their all, and put out the very best product they can next year with no compromises and really put forward their vision of what HotS should look like as an e-sport. GOM has always been a great organisation, so hopefully we'll see great things and maybe some innovation over the next year!

He's definitely not declaring war on Blizzard. When he says "people who have the will", I think he means people who believe in Starcraft, which he seems to be strongly aligning himself with.
It sounds like he's talking about OGN. OGN doesn't really need SC2 because it takes time out of their LoL rebroadcast schedule which is infinitely more profitable, so they have less motivation than GOM.

My bet is on WCS KR by GOM + GSL by GOM. + maybe a few OSL. That would be the best way to go for the korean scene.
Nah the best way would be either no WCS KR or a WCS KR run by Blizzard. The Korean companies shouldn't be forced to run this crap.
There is no WCS Korea unless Gom runs it. Blizzard isn't going to build a studio out there. Also, why are Korean companies special but ESL and NASL are fine running "crap" as you put it.
I hope WCS and OGN exist on their own and both give equal WCS points. If a player wants to play in both, let them. WCS finals should be the best players who can stay the most consistent against the widest range a players. We may get a handful of people at the finals this year who did good for 1 season only.
It would be awesome to see WCS and GSL's in Korea just so players have more options, but saying they can do what they want without Blizzard won't happen with it being there IP.
I guess all this info will be confirmed at Blizzcon, hopefully its big/better next year.

It's not like GOM has to do sc2 to survive, they have other games now(more popular ones if you go by crowd size too). If Blizzard is dumb and rejects their idea for a GSL separate from WCS we might just lose GSL forever.

If GSL is gone then so i am. GSL/OSL is the only tournaments that using the prepare for your opponent system which i vastly prefer over weekend tournaments. WCS honestly killed it for me by changing them into qualifiers for a season finals weekend tournament

If OGN is out, that would be pretty great for GOM. We could finally end the war between the two and get all our starcraft from one place. Plus it would keep all the sponsor money on one place. Better for players and GOM.

The problem with OGN is it is a full sized network on TV and unlike online, stream based events, they have limited time slots. I would also like to see them host SC2, but I think they might just double down on League. I dont know if it would be better for the Korean scene, but an end to the infighting between GOM and OGN would be a huge help.
Hmm. I wish Gom well, but I really don't want them going rogue AGAINST Blizzard. They won't win and it could really tear the WCS system apart. The rest of the world doesn't have a GOM and I hope that some disgruntled Korean companies don't ruin it for everyone.
I am pretty sure that it sounds more like OGN. Blizzard and GOM always had a good relationship. Even, Mr. Chae has been lukewarm with his criticism on the current WCS system.
Yea, this is the right move. Even though a lot of ppl like the LoL system, even they have a hands-free approach to Korea. The Koreans have run this for a decade now, just let them do what they want.

The last thing we need is Blizzard owning anything and everything related to SC2. They already get royalties from tournaments like IPL (when it existed) didn't they?

I believe Blizzard has said they do not receive money from events. They don't charge or force people to pay to show SC2. Thought there may be specific business relationships with companies like IGN, but we don't know about those.
I hope GSL and OSL return as independent events but seed/give points the same way EU and AM WCS do - as in both of them each thereby giving twice as much in Korea.

Considering the OSL is tradition and PL is starting soon? OGN will continue to produce SC2 content. LoL is already in their prime time slot and gets a good chunk but they still have room for SC2 too.

If they go back to the old frequent GSLs, while OGN runs 4 WCS seasons, I'd expect the GSL to become the most prestigious event again. I think the old GSL quick paces fit this scene better than WCS does. I'd rather look up who's the current GSL champion, than who's the current WCS season champion.

Ofc they run at the same time and LoL does get priority. They did this over the last season too and KeSPA got their stream in order so they could alternate between OGN and their stream. It worked out. They spread it out and OGN still carries some SC, but not as much as they did in the past.
I wouldn't mind seeing an independent GSL again. I was really disappointed when I realized that if the pattern continues, out of 3 seasons in 2014, GSL would only get one of them. So for 2/3 of the year I'd be watching casts of tastosis with no live audience or players

People just don't like reading things by Blizzard or even when other's point stuff out.
Not sure why people want OGN out. Before, we had both OSL and GSL, two tournaments Koreans could go to for money.
[Edit] - I wanted to clarify what I meant when I said before. Obviously we still have OSL and GSL now but what I meant was, before we had them outside of the WCS system. Last year we had 2 OSLs (well technically one was still BW but it was still StarCraft) and 5 GSLs. 7 major tournaments for Koreans. This year we had 2 GSLs (well technically 3 if you count the non-WCS one) and 1 OSL. Next year, Blizzard said they wanted to do just 3? So that means if it stays the same, 2 GSLs and 1 OSL when before we had 5 GSL and 2 OSL.
Rain was almost the champion between OSL and GSL too (that type of hype helps keep the scene too).
No OSL just means less tournaments and potentially less hype. OSL and MSL (and at one point, GOMTV Classic) all coexisted at one point, so there's room for two major tournaments in one area.
Also less Korean tournaments is one of the reasons why many Korean players are going to NA and EU regions instead of staying in KR.

I hope this means a return to the old way. Post-WCS Gom has been not as good, but at no fault of their own. GSL before WCS was the absolute best. Though I am biased because I don't like WCS and think it is killing the ability of pros to stream and has eaten into too many other tournaments.
On October 28 2013 16:21 Goldfish wrote: Not sure why people want OGN out. Before, we had both OSL and GSL, two tournaments Koreans could go to for money.
I want them out because the current situation isn't that they're arranging tournaments on top of GSLs/WCSs. Seems to me like in 2013 they half-heartedly ran two events with funding from Blizzard. Events that could otherwise been done better by GOM.
It doesn't really seem like they want to be doing anything with Starcraft anymore so let them go. I don't think anyone is calling for fewer tournaments but if we aren't getting more, then it would be nice to have the remaining ones be as good as possible. I was so happy when we got back to GSL with S3 after all the piggybacking. Chobra is great and I like DOA but overall the experience wasn't that good. Everything about the GSL is just so well done.

I would say there would have been 5 GSL's this year as per last year, it was a good number and flowed well.

Sheesh, this is Blizzard we are talking about. Blizzard - the creator and owner of SC2.
It's astonishing that people can treat Blizzard with such little respect, especially when they are riding off the company's success.
Apologies if I misinterpreted the vague interview.
The same way KeSPA treated Blizzard when they did Brood War broadcasts for almost a decade through OGN?
Sarcasm aside, I would rather have a happy medium where concurrent GSLs and OSLs run, but they're only limited to a maximum of three a year. Given the current environment, they could do two, running them concurrently with some overlap; e.g. GSL finals is during Ro16 of OSL and vice versa; which means that players peaking at different times can go deep in one tournament while the other doesn't have them (thus non Starleague matches of players doing deep runs = must watch games). Similarly, having two different tournaments give these tournaments a chance to have a broader map pool (2 maps specifically for the tournament + 5 standard ladder maps; or even 3 + 6 with options to ban out 1 standard and 1 non-standard map) give players more time and chances to do mind-games.
In any case, I'd rather have both OSL/GSL and have both give a fair chunk of Blizzcon points.
If OGN is out wouldn't it mean that the big Kespa teams are out as well? I can't imagine SK Telecom or Samsung dumping money on a game that's not even on TV.

Im interested to hear what GSL is going to do. I don't there is much wrong with how they are running GSL at the moment, there is still other ways id rather it go but i like the most important side Code S. It is still clearly the biggest and best competition in the world of Starcraft and if you want to be the best at the game you have to be doing well in that tournament. So i hope they get to keep doing what they do and don't alter it and make it silly. (my nightmare is them introducing more BO1 series ;_; )

Sheesh, this is Blizzard we are talking about. Blizzard - the creator and owner of SC2.
It's astonishing that people can treat Blizzard with such little respect, especially when they are riding off the company's success.
Apologies if I misinterpreted the vague interview.
Let's get one thing straight here, Sc2 is successful IN SPITE of Blizzard, not BECAUSE of Blizzard. Back on topic though, I think it makes a ton of sense for WCS Korea to be a separate entity and to leave OGN/GSL alone because this gives Koreans incentive to actually play in Korea.

I would say there would have been 5 GSL's this year as per last year, it was a good number and flowed well.
So blizzard blocked a tournament organizer for hosting more starcraft events on their own? Are you really sure about that? Because I may often complain how stupid blizzard is, but I wouldn't even dream of thinking that they are capable of doing this.

We don't actually know how much money Blizzard has pumped into SC2 as an eSport, or how much they've done behind the scenes to make it prosper. So claiming, beyond any doubt, that SC2 is successful in spite of Blizzard seems really disrespectful, to be honest. Go take your pitchfork elsewhere.

Maybe not but we do know that WCS hurted the scene cause of a couple reasons. 1 No other tournament was allowed to be cast at the same time and since WCS is going on all the time its nearly impossible. 2. GSL/OSL means a lot less now since its "just a qualifier".
