IdrA has written an article on his thoughts on the new WCS 2014 plans. This is in regards to production, region-locking, and more. Most notably by the end, Greg seems pretty positive for next year stating: "These changes should go a long way towards fixing that and 2014 could be a very good year for StarCraft".
http://www.ongamers.com/articles/former-professional-starcraft-player-greg-idra-fields-chimes-in-on-the-2014-world-championship-series-details/1100-167/
Excerpt:
Overall, it is clear that Blizzard heard all of the complaints the community had regarding last year's WCS. They made impactful changes, all going along with the general consensus of public opinion. The new broadcast schedule will be a shot in the arm for non-Korean StarCraft at the direct cost of Blizzard, and is an excellent move by them. The partial region locking is a good and much needed change, and while it does not really go as far as it should they were somewhat hamstrung by their policies from last year. Despite an overall feeling of negativity in the StarCraft community over the last year, event quality and viewership numbers as a whole have been doing well, and are largely the victim of oversaturation and public perception. These changes should go a long way towards fixing that and 2014 could be a very good year for StarCraft.

If Idra uses the word "good" without "retarded" or some variation thereof in the same sentence, it's good.

Idra said something was good without making the other person apologize.. starcraft 2 will be best game 2014. It is idra approved

so is the idra bump the opposite of the artosis curse?

A gg by Idra, what is the world coming to.

Someone must have used IdRa's ID for this. Can't be him, I miss the hate.

IdrA...... likes...... something?
These changes are too radical I'm freaking out

I think his thoughts on the game itself are still the same, though. ><

Its kinda hard to believe some people on TL have more Hate than Idra LOLOLOL I can't agree with Idra More I think 2014 is going ot be an amazing year of Starcraft 2 one not easily forgotten

I agree, should be a great year for Starcraft 2. Looking forward to it!

I really like Idra writing and casting! Nice to see him still involved with sc

If they listened when we criticized the wcs system, will they listen when we criticize the lack of lan and micro as well?

Wow, IdrA said something that wasn't negative, insulting or disrespectful?
2014 might be a good year for him, too. I might actually read the article.
Edit: I just read it, and I have to say, IdrA tells it like it is here. Still interested in what his role is going to be, exactly, aside from being a part time streamer and occasional writer or guest caster.

|
Glad to see he has mellowed out since leaving competitive gaming.

I really enjoyed that article. I can agree with or understand the thoughts behind every point in there. Well written, IdrA.
|
That was actually a pretty good article. Also I am glad he is positive about it.

The line it is drawn, the blessing it is cast.

I though it was a good read. Thought the article was pretty on point.

Little disheartening that people aren't taking the article itself more seriously over making a remark on Idra.

I like how IdrA is cautiously optimistic, there's only one gripe (or I just need clarity with it) that I have with his article and its this:
The additional unrestricted slots each season are, in particular, completely nonsensical. There is absolutely no reason for them to exist if this is not intended to be an international competition, they exist purely so that Blizzard can say they aren’t just handing foreigners easy money. My understanding of what he is saying is that WCS is not suppose to have any players from any other region to participate, ie Koreans stay in Korea, Europeans stay in Europe, Americas+ stay in America (the unrestricted slots serving no purpose to this end).
But this is contrary to what Blizzard said in the Team Liquid Q/A (from the very Q/A that he linked and specified in his article):
Q. You created a partial region lock. Why not a full region lock? While we do want to make sure there are fair opportunities for players to compete in their home regions, we still want to ensure that the WCS system is working to bring top level competition to viewers and identify the world's best StarCraft II players through the global ranking system. WCS as of 2013 was not intended, nor designed to be an Olympic style competition that completely isolates regional players from each other before having them compete on the global stage. We explored the Olympic style system in 2012, and for the most part, the regional events received low global viewership or little support. The part I underlined is completely refutes his assumption (from what I understood from his article) that WCS was meant to regional in the Olympic sense. To use a hockey analogy Blizzard made WCS 2013 to be the NHL while WCS 2012 was the World Cup. but people are thinking that it was still suppose to be the World Cup.
If IdrA is not saying what I think he is saying (rather he is saying the opposite) then my post and point is moot
EDIT: I should specify this, but I thought it was a great article by him, just this one point that bugs me.

I didn't realize that some Koreans would be grandfathered in. That is a disappointment, I was so excited.
I actually would have preferred if Blizzard stood their ground and didn't region lock at this point.
Blizzard didn't listen to so many calls for a region lock before WCS 2013, most of whom (including me) told Blizzard it would lead to WCS AM and EU being full of Koreans, and to decide not lock the regions.
Now, lo and behold, the regions are full of Koreans, and Blizzard is doing what so many wanted prior to 2013, and lock the regions.
This change of heart reveals massive incompetence on Blizzard's. The fans asked for something, and someone at Blizzard, decided that region locking wasn't necessary and couldn't foresee the absolute obvious. It wasn't like the idea that Koreans would dominate was some secret or surprise result, many predicted it. And SC2 suffered, especially the foreign scene, as a result. Very disheartening that such incompetence exists.
Had they stood their ground and made the argument the level of play was better, at least they wouldn't admit to such incompetence.
When are people who can actually listen and think critically going to be employed by Blizzard?

Had they stood their ground and made the argument the level of play was better, at least they wouldn't be shown to be incompetent. They couldn't really change the rules mid season. A lot of team made plans and spent money based on Blizzards plans. Although WCS had flaws, switching it up mid season might have done a lot of damage to teams and players. Also, GSL and the other groups helped Blizzard create WCS(per Mr. Chea) and it was their mistake as well.

I wasn't asking for them to listen mid-season. I was asking for them to listen before the season. WCS 2012 was awesome and regions were locked.

Also, once the league was announced, its is pretty safe to assume they were locked in, papers signed and hands shaken. There was a lot of money that got moved around and you can't just pull the rug out from under that, even if the reasons might be good. These are big companies and that is really bad business, like "breach of contract, I take you to court", bad business.

WCS 2012 sucked compared to the other tournaments of 2012 and it was feeble compared to the other WCS seasons we've had. It was also a completely different set up so you can't really compare its region locking "success" to the hypothetical situation of region lock in WCS 2013 and 2014.

I think WCS 2012 could have been awesome if it had been its own thing and not tacked onto NASL finals, MLGs, DreamHacks and other stuff. Stand-alone tournaments would have improved presentation and quality; I remember WCS NA and US having problems with player fatigue and overscheduling, and players dropping out of the parent tournament in order to focus on WCS.

Well, the article, I think, is hard to say a whole lot about. To me, it's just a reaffirmation of the opinions I already have.
Moreover, this is the internet. I don't know where you thought you were going when you came here, but you should know that the most obvious aspect of any post (in this case, IdrA) is going to get the most attention.

wait so you sided with region lock at the beginning (fair enough) but since blizzard didn't for 2013 and isn't going completely full-out on it in 2014 you would rather they kept their previous stance... because somehow it's incompetent that they didn't recognize the complaints at the beginning of the year and also incompetent that they aren't standing their ground after the year's passed?

I think foreigners should still have to beat some koreans if they want a bunch of money and an invite to the global finals. Maybe not all koreans but some would be nice. Or someone other than TB (but not blizzrad) needs to make some tournaments for only NA players. I for one want to watch a foreigner EARN his spot, not be given one and then get crushed. It saddens me greatly that some NA players arent willing to practice because "it will be too hard" or "ill just lose to a korean anyway". cmon guys...

I dont think I understand fully what you mean. IF someone wants to be a professional gamer they need to put in the time. I dont want some NA scrub to make tons of money when other people who do dedicate thier lives to SC2 dont get anything. I dont wanna watch someone who doesnt want to dedicate time to thier "job".Blizzards job isnt to give handouts to NA players for playing the game. If someone wants the money they are free to practice and earn it,but no one will just give them money.
