Apicella has shared through reddit about how the qualification process for Anaheim will work. There will be an open bracket on-site, in addition to online qualifiers where entrants are selected through invites and fan voting and one online qualifier that is double elim and totally open.
Qualifiers
There will be seven different Anaheim Qualifiers for the 12 pre seeded pool spots. The qualifiers will be open to citizens of the Americas or physical residents (so yes Violet, Polt, etc. can play in them).
- There will be three 16 player qualifiers. Players will be added through a combination of invites and fan voting. Format will be GSL groups to a single elimination bracket. 1st place of each qualifier will receive a pool play spot.
- There will be three 28 player qualifiers. Players will be added through a combination of invites and fan voting. Format will be single elimination. 1st place in each qualifier will receive a pool play spot.
- There will be 1 open online qualifier on Gamebattles. Format will be double elimination. The top 6 in the open qualifier will receive a pool spot.
Open Bracket at MLG Anaheim June 20-22
The open bracket at Anaheim will be open to any player globally. 192 Player Open Bracket; Top 4 Winners Bracket Players advance to Championship Pool Play; Top 4 Losers Bracket Players advance to Championship Bracket. Format can be found in the link at the beginning of the post.
Qualifier Dates
Qualifier dates will be announced soon and will start in April. Casters TBD.

Excellent, thx for the info!

North america is still strong, and kicking. lets hope this is not the single one MLG this year

Thank you for the information- I wish we could get a little more information regarding specifically when the competitor passes will go on sale.

28 player single elimination qualifier? How is that supposed to work?
Pre seeding to get 4 walkovers?

That's exactly what they expect, considering the qualifiers are not open to Koreans living outside North America.

Well yeah, but as far as I know there are no Korean pros living in South America.

At the end of the day, MLG is trying to make the best event for the viewers, which means making sure fan favorites are in streamed matches.

I'm fine with this, let's hope some teams send players from EU and KR. If not Scarlett vs Polt will still be nice to watch .

If no monster koreans come to the open bracket then Polt ezpz Actually expect Bomber to try out for the OB and would be a blast to see the Acer terrans there :D Sadly no Proleague players will most likely try out :/

Are leagues really expected to pay for every flight for pro players? What about sponsors and teams?

I'd rather watch some kid who got their on his own dime win than someone who got a paid flight, just because they are popular on the internet.

The amount of US only qualifiers combined with fan voting isn't that great.
It just means in all likely-hood we'll just end up with Scarlet, viOlet, Polt and then some Koreans that Western teams can afford to send out like probably Jaedong, maybe Dear or an Axiom player, who will just sweep the open bracket because of serious lack of competition as all of the decent US pros will have already made it through due to qualifiers. These players will inevitably do the best so it just means we still end up with probably all Koreans in the RO8, which is the only point onwards I can really see myself watching.

I agree, I also think it makes the tournament seem more exciting if the money is shifted from flights and hotels to prize money. More risk reward for players and teams is more excitement for viewers!

Anyway, interesting concept, I'm just happy open bracket is back. NA needs ways for unknown players to make a name.

I think this is a pretty good plan for MLG's viewership numbers.
Day 1: foreigners vs foreigners Day 2: foreigners vs Koreans (always hype) Day 3: mostly Koreans, but it's the championship bracket which creates more hype.
They aren't going for Europeans since hosting the event in Anaheim means they can't hold it at a good time for EU.
|
Will the qualifiers be broadcasted?
|
This sounds very good, gonna be great
|
I hope the invites are at least somewhat connected to former MLG champions, I'm okay with public voting but it would be nice if the other seeds weren't just doled out to the most savvy business choice. Or at least, I hope, spread amongst NA teams evenly at the very least. I'm sure there's a happy medium somewhere.

Will we have to sign up for the open bracket before ? Or we register when we come to MLG ?

I will not be surprised if MLG continues with their fan service to those entered into the polls for the invite qualifiers. Really a horrendous way to go about doing qualifiers which can potentially boost the fame of players like Bails, Koma, and Sonic for instance. Really makes me sad that there is only 1 GB tournament with 6 spots instead of it being more spread out and more spots.
It shouldn't be 50%/50% qualifier spots and only one elimination possibility for a tournament. @_@;; + Show Spoiler +though this is 'just' for pool play, i still think it's important.

Still treating the NA SC 2 scene as if it were voting for political candidates. Pretty soon, people are going to stop playing and just start campaigning for why people should vote for them. I don't know whether to laugh or play a different game, or both. I still wish tournaments were played out via voting, too. Take it the whole 9. I vote for minigun to win.
Every game should be a showmatch, and, then, after the game, viewers should vote for who they want to win/advance. That would be swell. Make it happen, champs.

If you're going to make a joke/spectacle (in a comical sense) out of NA, then I believe once it is already tarnished... go all the way. Make no bones about what is going on. A fraudulent tournament should be as fun as possible. I'd love to see two people that everyone hates matched up against each other, putting on a show, and then seeing who would win the "fan" voting. Playing games/winning is overrated. It's all about what the people want. Who cares if you won if no one likes you? MLG gets it. They just need to take it a little further.
Plansix, you might be a good poster, but... why would anyone vote you into a forum if you weren't as popular as another member? Who cares about quality. That's just so overrated to me. I just don't like half-ass things. I feel like MLG is teasing me. We all want minigun to win. It's all about making the viewers/customers happy.

Say I wanted to vote for Avilo. Who cares if you vote in bad players if they always get knocked out in the first round. It makes the whole system so "who cares..." for a lack of a better word. At least give me a chance to vote for bad players to advance a few rounds to make this system not the worst thing possible. I mean, it makes no sense as is.
I'd like to vote for nathanias to live past 10 minutes. So maybe the other guy can be forced to go afk for a lil bit. It should be more fan controlled. Just my opinion though.

o.o... While I do think Playa is going a bit overboard... Wouldn't you agree that it is odd that half of the pool play spots are only available to those who are invited or voted in to a chance to even participate? I don't think this should mean we immediately shouldn't watch it, but rather, encourage more pool play spots for people who qualify through open skilled environments. This just seems natural >.>
+ Show Spoiler +Rather than reductive I'd call the aforementioned posts drama-inducing :p

Meh, I'll gladly pass on this one. I cannot believe that there are no qualifiers for Europe and Korea. I mean, while I am not expecting MLG to reimburse the traveling expenses of the qualified players, I would wish that there was some way for them to go around the open bracket.

You began to invite Koreans via the partnership with GSL. Of course no organizer ever should pay for flights. Koreans/Europeans need to be able to afford their own flights so they actually pay for grabbing money out of the NA eco-system rather than getting paid to take that money out of the system.

I think this might be the crux of the issue? I get not wanting to pay for KR travel, but I'm not sure why it couldn't have been set up for KR to pay their own way here with a pool spot. I mean, if you think about it from a team perspective, it's a helluva lot harder to make the decision to invest in your player in an open bracket than it is in pool play (guaranteed stage/advertising time)
I don't doubt a lot of thought went into this and this was determined to be the best solution for a variety of factors, not all of which are known to us looking in from the outside. It's just a bit unfortunate for those of us who really aren't going to book an entire trip on the "hopes" enough top tier Koreans enter the OB.
Either way this is probably the perfect spot to have these sorts of tournament restrictions. There will be plenty of locals who don't have to travel far. I hope this is a really successful event. I shall be tuning into the stream and keeping my eyes open for a potential live event later this year. glgl

I would say 2 EU and 0 KR qualifiers., open bracket will likely have 4-8 Koreans coming out of it.

That shoul'nt be an argument though, you can't give the koreans less spots, because they are better. Ofc. there will be a lot of koreans coming out of the open brackets, but that is just the reward they rightfully get for being better.
