Otherwise their rankings are basically useless. We have a few ideas and this is the first thing I'll look at when this semester is over. The problem is that players form "regions" where they play tons of games. This causes each region to converge to a sensible ranking but makes it meaningless to compare across regions. Our current approach is to generate clusters in the graph of matches and make points transfer faster between clusters. However, this algorithm is really slow and it took over a day to run it last time we tried. If anyone has any experience with this, please, let us know. But yes, we are aware that this is a problem and we are actively thinking about it. EDIT: I just want to make it clear that the clustering algorithm mentioned is not in use atm. It is a proposed solution.

Do you really feel that we leave out some matches? Please let me know which and I'll add them. Also, what does this mean, really: "counts ones that have poor representation of the player's actual mapping onto the scene..." We count all games, isn't that what matters?

Yes, we're very aware of the shortcomings in the rating system. It's easy to come up with ideas but it's difficult to implement them in a way that doesn't create funny business in some places. I could elaborate but I've frankly had my fill of debating rating systems on TL.

I mean if he was leading in WCS points it brings the possibility of winning huge prizes at big tournaments. So what is this ? http://aligulac.com/ Aligulac is the largest database and rating system for Starcraft II. Every now and then a few hiccups occur when players beat up a large volume of lesser players, but usually it is a very useful resource for determining who is good at what point in time and an invaluable resource for match histories and the like.

I feel like when my parents told me about empty shelves when stuff was on ration cards in the 80's. So real back then, now we just giggle and go to Tesco
