It's so easy to call out retirement after a loss like that. Plus he says that he's still enjoying the game.

It means a player who we've enjoyed watching all this time is gone. I think the word is also acceptable to use when going from full time pro to part time. Problem is gamers are the number 1 abusers of this word. They usually rage on twitter after a lose and now they're "retired." In this case, it's a maybe so no need for a thread IMO.

Thread should be closed/deleted until TargA makes a real decision.

There are way more progamers than what the scene can actually support. The thing is that the majority come back after a short period of time as if nothing has happened. They say they're retired and then keep showing up in qualifiers, hoping to make it into a big tournament to have a reason to come back. I mean at this point; I almost feel like "I'm retiring" is a way for a player to fool himself into playing without pressure for a while, rediscovering the passion for the game and then returning to being a pro.

Naturally, but gradually scaling down the amount of matches you play has to be a better way to "retire" than abruptly stopping for a few weeks/months only to come back and have to start the process over again. I know that life-changing decisions don't come easy or are easy to stick to, but recurring comebacks only serve to make it worse.

HOTS is basically the same game as WOL minus the brood lord infestor. It's been the same game for 4 years. You either love it or you don't. If you're the kind of person who goes for new games, you'll be bored in 2 weeks anyway. Not to mention, if they quit for a year, you would hope they would pursue some career and be too busy to just come back on a whim.

They quit because of a combination of rational and emotional reasons (no results, it's pointless, losing feels bad) and come back because (they are missing the thrill, it's hard to find other things to fill their time with, it's something they are good at). Pretty easy to understand with just a tiny bit of thought.

I also saw Tod vs Targa the other night, and ofc, when you start accumulate losses like this I think it is easy to lose some self esteem. Everyone needs to take a big victory now and then. Come on Targa, we know you have it in you, get that beast out and start crushing again! For the swarm!

Most pros sacrifice education for having a shot at (often very short lasting) esports fame so they either have to find a job in a labour market that has no use for their skillset or go back to school, which means a couple of years of having no income.
