When Steppes was in the pool, there were rarely post 2-base situations. The game has evolved. It will be interesting to see what changes can occur in play when forced to use maps that were not intended to have "safe three base" play.
All my games on steppes went past 2 bases, I just assumed that if neither player cheesed then there would be a long game o.o
I think one of you were playing wrong... maybe both. 5rax reaper all day everyday, son.

Well, I was trying to be a macro player back then, so I would take a fast third (as protoss) at the gold base and turtle.

You could get macro games on the map. The tight confines just made it a lot more energetic. I honestly don't remember a lot of games that "went long" - what we think of macro now wasn't quite so standard then.
(Of course, my memory could be going - but I recall a lot of "quick build the wall, the zerglings are coming" and "dammit, another four gate". And the 3-rax stim timing.)

In beta there were many many 1 hour TvTs on that map... Tanks did way more damage back then than now. I had a 1 hour+ one vs morrow or demuslim can't remember, anyway they ran out of gas b/c of having like 1 gas denied or something like that and lost the game ;o Don't remember exactly.
Had some long TvZs too. It wasn't so bad if you played T, you could make it a macro game. Unless P proxy gated inside your main which happened like half the games.
Voting has ended. The results will be up in a few weeks, if they go by their original plan. However, there has been some reddit discussion including psione from blizzard to publish the maps one by one.

Well, honestly this would be quite annoying, the same way it'd be extremely annoying if you knew you had seven diseases among twenty and your doctor tells you one each week. I'd rather know the seven diseases at once, so I can think in advance of ways to cure them (what to veto, is this map playable in at least one match-up, etc). So yeah, I hope they tell us at once and rather quickly.

The maps won't be added to the ladder until Season 4 actually begins, post-BlizzCon. However, we'll look to reveal a winning map every few days starting on Monday, October 6. The idea being that this will allow for a chance to discuss each map in depth. What the map has meant to StarCraft II in the past and what is could look like in the upcoming season.

Good idea! I just hope Metalopolis and Antiga Shipyard are part of that bunch. >_<

Is it possible that balance changes will be made, e.g. if Steppes makes it, that it might be rebalanced a bit?

Maybe we can do a day-by-day breakdown of how to abuse terrible maps and win free ladder points

It's terran favored in TvP. Drops, super vulnerable naturals, easy islands, mains siegable from the low ground o.o
I always faked a proxy gate and build up on my natural. But Zealot build time was OP back then. Hope Metalopolis makes it, I can't wait to go oldschool Kiwikaki with the MsC added in and just murder every Zerg.
And would be funny if someone evolves steppes into a slightly bigger map afterwards. Had the best macro games on that map, because the defenders advantage was so big in the lategame.

I'm super eager to know what the map pool will end up being. Building up on the suspense like that is a good idea ! Plus, I like how Blizzard is pushing for a more varied map pool (incorporating 3player maps in 2014 season 3, etc) On another note, how are you guys at Blizzard going to proceed for the 2015 Season 1 map pool ? All new maps ? Using maps from 2014 Season 3 again ? Please consider using community-made maps !

As for me, I'm super afraid, but you must be the optimistic guy.

... they already did with Catallena, Foxtrot Labs, Deadwing and Nimbus, which weren't that exciting nor balanced -especially Nimbus which is broken as hell, PvT is a nightmare on this map. They should just add solid maps, I don't care if they're community made or not as long as they're reasonably standard good maps.
