Starting October 24th, Marcus Lindmark will be the new CEO of DreamHack AB. Marcus started to work fulltime at DreamHack in 2007 and has before that been part of the DreamHack Crew. Marcus has huge experience in all DreamHack’s fields of operation and will lead this company in an exciting and expansive period of time.
Marcus will take the CEO position after Robert Ohlén who has led the company since 2011, and has had a fantastic journey with DreamHack. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Robert for the time and wish him the very best in the future.
In connection to the appointment of the new CEO, DreamHack is also re-organizing the leadership structure within DreamHack. A new management team including Marcus Lindmark (CEO), Stefan Magnusson (Vice President) and Tomas Lyckedal (Business Development) will drive the company’s direction. Tomas has worked with DreamHack since 5 years back and has held the position of ‘Head of eSports’ earlier, and he will carry on to be the spokesperson in esports related matters and develop the eSports side of things within the company.
We also want to welcome Bas Bruinekool to DreamHack as he joins as Technical Producer and TOM for DreamHack’s media productions. In reference to that, we have earlier recruited Kimberly Åhage, Pontus Rundqvist and Martin Edsman on a project basis to DreamHack AB. Kimberley will lead and develop DreamHack’s cosplay activities, Pontus is working with the DreamHackthon project and Martin is joining as Producer for our media production team.
DreamHack will also move to a new office space during the Autumn and we wish both new and old customers welcome to DreamHack’s new Headquarters in Telefonplan in Stockholm.
After the news reached the internet that Robert is leaving DreamHack we realised that people have many questions and speculations about the development. Here’s some answers on some frequently asked questions:
Is there an internal power struggle within DreamHack? No. The daily operation at DreamHack between owners, management, employees, the board and our crew is working all fine. The plan how DreamHack should be led and developed is crystal clear and there’s no internal conflict between owners, leadership, employees and the board about this.
Has Robert been the subject of a Coup d'état? No, this has been a long process in which over the past months the board and leadership within DreamHack has unanimously seen a need for change within the leadership of the company and communicated with Robert, it has not been something that has happened suddenly or overnight.
Why is the board relieving Robert as CEO at DreamHack? At the end of the day its about the faith and confidence internally for Robert Ohlén as CEO was missing. DreamHack has had great development and growth with Robert as CEO but we’re sure that in order to continue development we needed these structural changes that have now happened.
Will more employees leave DreamHack? No. No other staff at DreamHack have given notice to leave or been given notice of dismissal. Instead we have recruited fresh blood and new staff to strengthen our organisation.
Will DreamHack stop with activity X or arrange competition in game X now? DreamHack’s CEO has never been an essential part of the process when it comes to game selections and those kind of questions. It will not be that way in the future either. Development of content and eSports is done by project leaders in discussion with the management team, crew and sometimes consultants.
I hope the first guy that build this "communication template for organization that fire people but want the customer base to not creep out" has some kind of royalties on it.

Don't hold your breath on that one:
DreamHack’s CEO has never been an essential part of the process when it comes to game selections and those kind of questions. It will not be that way in the future either.
Didn't expected a thank you, knowing that the former CEO is slightly annoyed about the situation. But I guess they have to stick to the template that annoys the lowest amount of customers.

We have a statement on one side, and a tantrum, passive aggressive tweets and general unprofessionality on the other. Not saying DHs statement is the correct one, but Ohlen doesn't do much to add to his credibility. He actually does exactly the opposite.

Agreed. He should realize that his attitude is doing no good to anyone currently
Yeah I see no reason to favor Roberts version of events over dreamhack's. After reading this statement I have confidence that dreamhack will continue on just fine.

Yeah, the longer this continues the more convinced I am he was probably not fun to discuss decisions with..

Hehe agreed. Imagine a press release like this instead:
Is there an internal power struggle within DreamHack? You bet your ass! The amount of backstabbing, name calling and beard pulling we've had between the board, the management and the employee federation has been freaking biblical in proportions. We tried to bring in mediators and negotiators with experience from middle east, but they just shook their heads and left for some easier assignments in IS-controlled areas in Iraq instead. I tell you, it aint been easy lately!
Has Robert been the subject of a Coup d'état?
Yes. This has been a long process in which over the past months the board and leadership within DreamHack has unanimously seen a need for change within the leadership of the company and communicated with Robert through various means like poisoned darts, nasty signed post-its, hidden spiders, honey traps, you name it. Hell, we even sold his desk on alibaba to some dude in Arizona, but he just wouldn't take a hint! It has not been something that has happened suddenly or overnight, I can tell you, oh no!
Why is the board relieving Robert as CEO at DreamHack? We just can't stand the guy anymore. There is something about him that rubs us the wrong way these days. Besides, we have agreed to put one of our pals as the CEO. He might not be as qualified, but he's a good bloke and he does what he is told to without protesting or trying to reason or raising interesting points or challenging decisions in any kind of way. Our buddy, he is!
Will more employees leave DreamHack? Ha! Just wait and see. Christmas is coming. Need I say more? Some people better shape up right now and they know it...
Will DreamHack stop with activity X or arrange competition in game X now? We're pondering going into activity XX, and our consultants are already into activity XXX. Me, I'm having a glass of XXXX every now and then! How about that?

It was not a Coup d'état, some people don't like him or his work and he was released, simple like that XD At least thats what it looks like to me. Ohlen is pissed becuase he was released from a CEO position when nothing was going terribly wrong and no scandals happened.

He's just one guy and he might have gotten screwed over pretty hard. I'd be angry as well. And to be fair, if he would be "professional", in other words politically correct, then people wouldn't be talking about this nearly as much. He can't be expected to sweep this under the carpet with sweet talk just like DH is trying to do.

Dreamhack released an official statement, he did nothing but, and i'm sorry, bitch. How is DH sweeping something under the rug if they're the only one actually making a statement?
The only thing Ohlen is doing is calling people retards (literally) for thinking it might have had something to do with gamersgate. That's literally all the content of his tweets. Bitching. I don't know what you would do if you "got screwed over pretty hard", but i'd certainly get the truth out there instead of slandering.

I wouldn't mind if Ohlen was throwing Dreamhack under the bus, it's the passive-aggressive crap that is really irritating me somewhat. Perhaps he is bound by some legal agreements not to actually discuss certain things, but then if he signed those kind of NDAs or what have you he shouldn't be hinting at stuff at all.

He was asked if he's under NDA, his answer was that he makes his own laws and does what amuses him.
Not that it would be any answer to the question, but if he actually would want to set things straight, he would've simply said "yay" or "nay".
edit: to my knowledge, there is no clause that actually forbids you from disclosing wether or not you are bound to a NDA.

Although actually it'd really spice things up if they did it that way in esports. Imagine Marcus Lindmark coming out on stage at Dreamhack to have that conversation with Robert Ohlén before the finals. Though in the real world that'd probably result in being decked.

Well, looks like the Dreamhack organization certainly wins in terms of professionalism, providing (slightly) more insight into the situation, and less passive aggression than Robert Ohlen.
Good to hear an official statement being made instead of just going off Ohlen's obnoxious rage tweets.

I'll take honest anger over dressed up niceties any day of the week.
Frankly, the word "professionalism" is used far too often as an excuse for blatant lying in these kinds of situation. Not that I am saying that anyone here is actually lying.
There's no honest anger, what kind of definitions do you have? There's a spiteful, bitching arse out there, who literally does nothing but trying to taint DH reputation without actually having an explanation why - how's that a statement "fueled by honest anger"? He doesn't do or say anything, he's simply being passive aggressive, which isn't even remotely "honest anger".
Not to mention that, since he doesn't disclose what "actually happened" (assuming that DH lied, which he implies, but doesn't say, which is exactly what kids in puberty do), the only reasonable thing to do is to assume that there is nothing that "actually happened". He got fired. His tweets show clearly, that there might be a reason, since apart from being spiteful, passive aggressive and slanderous - nothing comes from him.
Btw, professionalism in official statements doesn't mean "lying". It's bullshit. It means, you ignore questions that kinda feel iffy to answer to. Which DH didn't. A professional statement has alot of words, but doesn't answer any questions, which the DH statement did (they even tried to answer to the conspiracy-theories). I have yet to see a statement of a reasonably sized company with a good name that straight out lied.
How would you be if the company you helped found and put a lot of work in suddenly kicks you out?
Depends. What if you change "suddenly kicks you out" to "fires you for a reason"?
edit: people here assume that DH did Ohlen wrong, but so far, there's literally NO "evidence" pointing to that. None. The only thing we have is a statement from DH, and nothing from Ohlen. Would you act like this if somebody fires you unrightfully, or would you try to explain WHY it was unrightful rather than slandering? I know i would try to make people understand why i rage, to not look like a fricking spiteful idiot.

We have a statement on one side, and a tantrum, passive aggressive tweets and general unprofessionality on the other. Not saying DHs statement is the correct one, but Ohlen doesn't do much to add to his credibility. He actually does exactly the opposite.

Robert didn't found DreamHack. He came on board almost a decade after the festival started. And from what I've heard and read, his takeover of the company in 2009-11 wasn't exactly bloodfree either.
How is this bullshit? There is literally nothing for them to refute other than vague accusations and third party theories based off of those accusations. Based on Roberts behavior they might as well be trying to save his face.

I was never aware Dream Hack needed a CEO, thought it was just a gathering of gamers. That tells me how much I follow mainstream games such as SC2 and LoL.

I'll take honest anger over dressed up niceties any day of the week.
Frankly, the word "professionalism" is used far too often as an excuse for blatant lying in these kinds of situation. Not that I am saying that anyone here is actually lying.
I second that. Flatly ignoring the truth just because of the way it is framed is a big mistake. Would you rather take beautifully decorated pile of shit or a horribly decorated pile of jewelry ? Truth is the truth, even if it's expressed in a crude manner.
"Was there a coup d'etat? No!" "This was a long process..."
If that's so, I can't imagine that Robert wouldn't have had more time to process, accept, and move on with life to the point where he would be less bitter about it.
I think the most honest part of this is where they specifically say that the board had lost confidence in having Robert as the CEO, without going into exactly why that was.
Whatever the reason, I'm hoping that truly nothing changes. Well, except for the guy in the limousine with Geoff during the hype advertisements. How good is the new CEO with Champagne bottles?

I don't see why he would only be bitter if it was a sudden firing. Maybe a long, hard-fought firing would make him even more bitter.

I can't think of a single truth that Robert has posted. So far all he's done is suggested that the situation and DH's statement is BS. However, he hasn't offered up anything better...
At this point I would say he's just "yelling fire" instead of fanning flames... Makes me question if there's even smoke.

Can you please point out to Ohlen's version of the events, if it is the truth? Because I can't find it anywhere

And DH's statement did not trigger your bullshit alarms? There hasn't been any real official explanation of anything, from anyone. And there most certainly will never be one. Robert can't reveal any "secret" behind all of this or he'd get sued. DH won't reveal any "secret" behind this to avoid negative consequences on their public image.
Who's in the right? Probably no one, but we'll never know. And we shouldn't have to know. We're not judges, we're spectators. And each one of us can decide which side he finds the most "probably" right.
After having been on the wrong end of the political side, several times, I'd rather side with Ohlen on this one. Both his and DH's communications around this are triggering flashbacks of things I'd like to forget. There *are* corporate assholes who are very good at saying the nicest things publicly but happy to fuck anyone over anything that could serve them better. And when that happens and you're the one who gets fucked, it pisses you off and you just want to shout at the world. And this behaviour, under these circumstances, is *not* unprofessional. At all.
So... Ohlen bitched on Twitter, DH released the usual politically correct bullshit statement, we don't know anything about anything that actually happened, so until we get real information (which may never come, but we can hope for news from Richard Lewis or Slasher), siding with one or the other is a purely subjective thing.

He just had what he lived for ripped out from under him, it's sad but completely understandable that he is super mad about it even publically so. The comments about passive aggressiveness and unprofessionality is all super good until you're the one who gets their passion destroyed.
