I am curious for a bunch of small reasons and figured I'd ask here.
Will playing on 4:3 encourage awareness?

I remember Grubby did some commercial for a monitor (Benq?) talking about how the wider aspect ratio gave him more "view"... and people basically ripped him a new one (as is standard on TL). So it's only going to be different, not better or worse.

i wouldnt say i played worse or better, but it was probably a disadvantage as you simply cannot see as much :D

Yeah this post pretty much covers it. As for the OP's question, I think it might make it a little bit easier to see the minimap (since you have to move your eyes less), but in turn you also see less, so it's harder to micro big battles, spot observers etc, so I don't think it's worth it. IMO it's better to just practice awareness with a 16 aspect ratio.

I am curious for a bunch of small reasons and figured I'd ask here. I don't know what you mean by "visually aware", but I personally don't think the aspect ratio has a huge impact on my gameplay. I bought my first widescreen monitor only 2 years ago and before that I played with 5:4 aspect ratio. I also sometimes switched back because my other computer still has that 5:4 monitor. Obviously it's helpful to see more of the battlefield, but actually the only advantage or disadvantage I noticed was that on a wider monitor the minimap is farther away from the center of the screen. So if you spend most of the time watching either the minimap or the center, it might be even easier to use a narrow monitor.

whatever is gained by using either 4:3 or 16 is probably not very significant compared to change of habits and managing your attention better

Imo, I think blizzard did a poor job in designing the GUI. It makes no sense to have the two most important things to keep an eye on in opposite ends.

I agree. There is a good reason why monitors get wider and not higher. It suits our eye vision. For our eyes it's more natural to perceive things in the wide aspect.

Not worse than retaining the same arbitrary vertical FOV...
