GOM eXP just announced at the end of the Code S Finals that they will be closing their doors at the end of this year. AfreecaTV have acquired the rights to GSL and will be broadcasting the tournament in 2016. However, this was not all there was to the post-finals announcements. The following was announced by Afreeca's CEO:
GSL in 2016 will come with free 1080p High Definition (as of yet unclear if there will be a Twitch broadcast, but it seems unlikely)
Legacy of the Void Archon Mode Showmatch on November 9th, in conjunction with NaDa's wedding ceremony, all streamed.
New Starcraft Broodwar League Hosted By Afreeca. Opening match on October 28th. details TBA.
The Blizzcon tiebreaker match between FanTaSy and HyuN will be played out in-studio on October 6th, 18:30 KST.

I was so sad at the beginning of the announcement but than I got so happy, but just like you I only remember these three announcements ! . Such a good year coming. If I am lucky I'll go to korea to see it live !
I hated the way they worded this. :-\ Half my friends thought GSL died when GOMtv became GOMEXP because of the way they worded that marketing campaign.

Was that confirmed? The way Tastosis made the announcement, they made it seem like we had to ask for it/show demand.

Pretty sure they said that they are not going anywhere and announcing free 1080p for non-koreans without casters for them is not that nice announcement would be.

I would assume this job falls to Team Salmon, since Tastosis would still be in America at that point. (The wedding is part of the same event as the special Legacy stuff.)

they have very little idea of the current scene or state of the game and I only say very little because tasteless was on stream watching the Ro16 of the SBENU Starleague trying to figure out which server do people play BW on these days
Well, kind of foreseeable given the way things were trending, but still...you have to remember that back in the heyday of WoL, when GOM was the only game in town, they really put their stamp on SC esports. Everything from the music, the staff (Mr. Chae, Tastetosis, John the translator), the format (Code A tournament, anyone?), the GOM player itself, the GSTL, the Code S ro16 selection ceremonies...they were the ones who directly took the inspiration from the BW leagues and molded it into SC2 as an esport
Thank you GOMTv for making Esport, and especially SC2 a thing all over the World. It would not have been without GSL Open Seasons with insane Casting, Production Value and Prize Money. Bow down filthy moba Plebs for SC2 and GOMtv have laid the foundation of your success.
I welcome our new Afreecaa Overlords, may they live long and prosper.
Goodbye GomTV. You probably gave me more hours of enjoyment than any other production house combined. Will miss you, but luckily your spirit will live on in AfreecaTV!

I've heard this will happen at the KR LOTV launch event (unless I misunderstood), but if so I assume there will be =p
When Nada said that he will become entartainer on afreeca... I didn't expect him to stream his fucking wedding :D That is nuts. Well, at least we will see how a korean wedding looks like.
About the rest. It's sad that GOM is gone, but I will lie, if I say, that I'm not happy about the 1080p quality. Watching Starcraft in poor quality was just torture.

Does anyone know what will happen to the casters? Both Tasteosis and the Korean trio JYP, Gisado, and Mr. Park? I seriously hope they don't grab new casters. I love the current casting people, and it would be a shame for it to change simply because the title has gone from Gom to Afreeca.

Copy/Paste with small additions.
Enjoyed it back in the days, so credit for that and every nice moment.
I'll miss GOM so much, they were responsible for my amazing 2010-2011 SC2 memories.
Hey anyone from GOM reading this, you're missing every GSL from January 2011-May 2011 including the first 3 GSTLs and the World Championship. Can you guys upload that before the end?

Yea I echo this.
While I wasn't a fan of the low res broadcast and how they ran things they put on a lot of great sc2 broadcasts. Kinda bummed to see it not be profitable for them.

The love for GomTV ain't got nothing to do with quality. It's the history we have with them, with Tastosis and John the translator. It's the epic games we watched with them and because of them. It's the mad hype, the random side shows they ran and the epic, hilarious music they played in breaks.
I get that a lot of that will be present in future seasons as well, and we'll develop a history with Afreeca too. But that doesn't mean it won't be hard to not miss Gom. They introduced me to SC2, and for that I'll always be grateful.

I thought the free ultra-low quality stream meant people were buying subscriptions and it was such a great decision that it was keeping GOM afloat. I mean GOM was a business and they definitely knew what they were doing, right?

No doubt, if only we could understand the words. Prolonged vowels is only fun for so long without context.
After 2+ years, I will finally start watching the GSL again.
GOM/GOM eXP is a shady piece of shit. I hate how they purposely block the Korean stream from the outside world, so that I am forced to watch the English commentators. That just made me stop watching the GSL entirely.

Well to be fair BW is far easier to understand from just watching than you'd think, so commentary is only flavor for hype moments, which Korean casters deliver really well
Sad to see! End of an era. I started with esports with the first GSL. My passion has died down in the past year or so, but it's still sad to see GomTV go! To this day, GSL was the only esports org I paid for and kept that subscription for 2 or 3 years.

Not when you are in Europe. Which means you are watching at work as a radio background. Without English commentary GSL died for me.
The only thing I'm worried about at the moment is the production quality. Will we still enjoy epic music like in GSL? Or all that will change with Afreeca TV. Beside, what will happen to the GOMEXP Youtube channel? What about all the VODs there?
On October 05 2015 02:55 WrathSCII wrote: Beside, what will happen to the GOMEXP Youtube channel? What about all the VODs there?
It will probably be abandoned. Nothing will happen to the existing vods but they won't add new ones anymore.
Aren't there still a lot of old vods that haven't been uploaded yet? Would be a shame if those were lost forever. Fortunately, some of those seasons were torrented back in the day, and even I have some games downloaded from those torrents. Hopefully if GOM isn't willing to maintain the YouTube channel, they won't be willing to do any copyright strikes so the community can flesh out those uploads without worry.
So sad Gom was like an old friend all these years, the GSTL memories, the open season when terran were nerfed because they could just stim and kill the protosses who didn't react fast enough to forcefield their own ramp and because zergs were droning till 70 pop without units. Naniwa Nestea incident, Tastosis...
I feel like a familly member just died
I hope tastosis will still cast and all the GOM employees will still have a job.
It's sad to see GOM go after all these years. I have so much respect for everyone involved in that company, even though they received so much shit the past year or so.
Hopefully Afreeca keeps Tasteosis (not sure why they would replace them) and we can see a Brood War GSL in the future as well. Really looking forward to the future of StarCraft!

They ignored just foreign part of their streaming IIRC, the Korean stream had 720(or 1080? not sure now) and I am pretty sure free 1080p would not save them. The numbers were good with shit quality...
Edit: Basically it is the other way around. Those who said that GOM has problems to keep GSL alive were right... Sadly
Kinda sad to see them go, I had a blast during the last 5 years, they did a lot for esports and SC2, thank you! Couldn't support their paywall policy, though, so the news don't surprise me that much. Hopefully Afreeca will acquire most of the staff to continue the awesome production!

pretty brutal if they don't put them up but then try to enforce their rights. GOMtv was heavily subsidized by Blizzard so hopefully they'll be good guys about it.

As one of those people who thought (and still thinks) it was a good business decision, I don't know how you can link GOM shuttering its business with that. It's clear that it was only even done as a desperate attempt to make money by a struggling company, and it failed. From my perspective, without seeing any GOM financials, the sequence looks like this:
1. GOM is financially struggling. 2. GOM tries to create a new revenue stream from a previously loss-generating segment by making foreign viewers pay for 1080p quality. 3. GOM continues to financially struggle so it shuts down.
Even if you take out number 2 above, numbers 1 and 3 would still have happened. Would they still be around today if they gave free HD streaming to foreigners, who generate almost no ad revenue and probably cause loss because of the extra production costs? Honestly, it's not possible to say without real data but I don't see how it's likely.
@Kofuku I wouldn't assume that without looking at their financials. Of course sc2 wasn't making them any money, but who knows what else they invested in. On stream they said they're leaving e-sports.
So many good memories watching GOM. The original 2 am stream. I just hope Afreeca can live up to their name. There's a lot more than stream quality that went into that business.
From the facts that I know, Gretech were trying to leave esports and sell GSL as far back as 2014 (and possibly longer). I wouldn't peg the blame on the GSL foreign stream as the primary cause. I think we all know at this point that SC2 is not the most popular game in Korea, but the thing about that studio is that you need to have it continuously booked with events to get the most out of it. This was something they did not do and possibly could not do.
On October 05 2015 10:34 afreecaTV.Char wrote: I wouldn't peg the blame on the GSL foreign stream as the primary cause.
If you're dumb enough to make a business decision like that and have terrible stream quality, you're bound to make a whole bunch of other dumb business decisions.

haha, this a thousand time.
That shitty gomplayer that was blocked on my workplace. I did so much stuff to get it to work and the hype when the player was loading and me thinking if it will work or not this time was for real.
The moment the GSL popped up and I heard Tastosis was such a relief each and every day.
From what I can see it all seems to be good news going forward. I feel GOM has been bad for Sc2 over the last few years, it was like pulling teeth to get them to go to twitch and even then they asked for $15 or we had to watch war of the ants. Of course we don't know exactly how this will turn out but I am hopeful.

Indeed.
Gom business model was driven by pure idiocracy and stubbornness. While the whole world has learned that free 2 play is the way to go, streamers are getting neverending voluntary donations, and micro transactions and crowd funding pay off better for those who do it than any kind of forced fee ever could, gom has chosen their own way of failure.
Not only they have opted to go this way, there must have been someone at the top that was stubborn enough to pull it through until the end instead of initializing the change for the better.
This contributed to the general decline of interest into SC2. But GOM ofc as well suffered from this general lack of interest in SC2 both in korea and the rest of the world which exist for a wide variety of other reasons anyway.

I believe GSL 2016 will be on both AfreecaTV and Twitch. I also cannot imagine it not having English casters.

Sounds like awesome news to me. I subscribed to the first few years of GSL and its services only got worse and worse. I welcome this buyout and hopefully we'll get real 1080p videos this time around.

Good riddance, thanks Afreeca for the 1080p.
GOM stealing OGN's SC2 spotlight? More like OGN chose to pull out of SC2 to focus on more profitable games.

Tastosis confirmed?
They really want to keep everyone, including Tastosis and even Gyuri.

is there any reason it would? it doesn't cost anything to keep a yt channel, does it?
even if afreeca has the rights now what reason would they have to shut down the channel? maybe they move the videos to their own domain or something, idk (not familiar with afreeca)
Wonder if they'll go for a standard hold hand into double ring into kisses build, or if they will do some kind of rush. I can see Nada playing the meta in some way though. I think we can expect cheese as well. Is the wedding bo5? Does anyone know who Nadas main training partners will be? What team is his wife on?

I remember watching on that shitty gomplayer through bullshit work around links at 4 am and getting absolutely hype. I really hope they keep tastosis. The GSL wouldn't be the same without artosis being a dork.
the fun early days of SC2 are over either way, I think ... Tastosis aren't nearly as entertaining now, imo
Damn, that's sad news too see GOM go like that.. but it's also good news that Korean SCII will finally be streamed for free in HD. Always thought GOM was strange for doing things that way, especially when you had WCS America and WCS Europe doing shit for free.
GOM, you were really cool. I went to the GOM studio and had a blast there. The memories were awesome. I'm going to forget about disliking the way you went down and just remember the good things. Goodbye GOM, and thanks for everything that you've done.
That said, super hyped about a company that can actually continue hosting awesome SC2 action took over GSL. Thank you AfreecaTV. I will once again watch the GSL vods (and live every blue moon)

Where's the like button when you need it? <3 all around!

It's just that in some Asian countries they count age differently than we do here in the west. In China and Korea (not sure about Japan), babies are one year old the moment they are born, and grow by one year every New Year's Day. Say a baby was born on December 31, he'd be counted as two years old the very next day, even though he's really just one day old.
It's the old way of doing things. Today, a lot of people will give two numbers when they talk about age. If they only give one number, it's most likely the "Korean" age depending on where you are.
This fleeting moment was and always will be the peak of SC2 and the GSL. Never forget "John the Translator" -- for a brief moment, we experienced that which needs no words. It was real, and let's never forget the emotion of that day!
Pay wall sucked. Moletrap was the worst English caster of a major SC2 tournament of all time. And the Gom player was awful.
HOWEVER. GSL gave me the happiest and most memorable moments of SC2 that I've ever had. From Mvp to Squirtle to Seed to MC to Mr. Chae to Tastosis to Gyuri to the Street Fighter announcers, and on and on and on. I will miss Gom, and it's weird and oddly sad to me that it's going away. We love you Gom, but luckily it seems like not much of the amazing stuff about Gom will change on the switch to Afreeca, which makes me happy.

It is tonight. 1:30AM PST. I'm hoping it will be streamed on twitch under the old GSL stream as I got an email 5 hours ago saying: gsl just went live! Legacy of the Void Launch Events [ Seoul, Korea ].
If not Afreeca will be streaming it here: afreeca.tv/36846298 Not 100% that it will be an English stream, but it seems like it.
