Hello!
Recently I got a friend to try sc2. He liked it, bought it and considering he never played any RTS before, he is now sitting comfortably in bronze league learning the game. As he is laddering he is getting bronze/silver players on regular basis. He got gold opponent once afaik. But this happened today, and I must say, I'm shocked af. Haven't heard about that extreme matchmaking in SC2 ever, maybe this happened. But this is in lotv. How the hell, such mismatch happened in the first place? Does this happen more often than I'm aware of?

Check if the person lost or gained points. If not they were probably playing unranked. If your friend was also on a sick win streak it is also possible that they match if it isn't peak times/long search.

Probably unranked, guy also kinda looks like a portrait farmer.

Ok, my friend lost, but the enemy didn't. Still, how can even unraked gave a bronze enemy impossible to defeat?

My guess would be that the master guy is leaving games to drop his MMR. 425 games played this season but only ~180 wins seems kinda strange to me. Also, unranked MMR behaves retarded sometimes.

Yeah, almost certainly a master player that dumped his MMR for Flash knows what reasons.
I was about to say that there is nothing Blizzard can do, but maybe it is reasonable to have a cap on how fast you can lose MMR. No one drops 2 leagues in skill over a season, let alone 5 leagues as it was here. Well, unless you break an arm or something, or maybe change race...
Or it's that bug with MMR that has been around lately... :/

Much wider.

Is that true? Because when Unranked was introduced, Blizzard said Unranked was an exact copy of Ranked, the only difference being that you're not put in leagues or given ladder points.

I'm pretty sure unranked has a different MMR than ranked so your league doesn't matter, if you just started playing unranked you'll be matched up with bronze and if you win gold, plat, diamond, etc...

You'll probably be better off posting in the Blizzard forums. But TL already gave you some good answers.
