Sup guys,
I haven't played sc2 in about 4 years. I still gots a copy of HotS but I played like 10 online games before I quit. My question now is, do I need a copy of LotV to have access to the full multiplayer content? I don't care for the campagin, what I wanna know is whether I can still ladder.
I did a couple of ladder games yesterday and so much is still confusing to me.On ladder I was playing with 6 starting SCVs, then I palyed with an old friend of mine who has LotV and started with 12 (I think). What is this all about? Is blizz forcing me to buy LotV in order to have access to the current version of ladder? I thought it was not gonna be like this.
On another note, compared to heydays of WoL, has the game overall gotten "better"? Is Lotv a better game than WoL? Is the community thriving or was WoL more lively? What about the skill of the leading progamers, so many names I haven't really heard before. Is Mvp still the ony and only bonjwa to come out of sc2? Do the pros nowadays live up to his skill?
ps: sry if wrong section, pls move if it is and don't close. wanna know whether I should get back into the game.

Simple points, all my opinion:
Community is NOT as lively as WoL. Although, more refined may be a good term? The fan's still left are the more dedicated ones
Is LotV a better game than WoL? Yes. Sure, it may not have the hype that WoL did. But, at least from a spectators PoV, LotV is creating the best starcraft we've seen.
Pro's now days are the most skilled they've ever been. The competition is fiercer than ever. Is any as consistently better then his peers as MVP was? No. Are every players peers now 10 times as skilled as MVP were? Yes

Game is definitely better, the strongest expansion without a doubt even though it has introduced a few new stupid elements whilst removing a few at the same time.
Some of the new units are wonky or just weak, while some have become very powerful. The Disruptor is complete hit or miss, Colossus was nerfed to the ground, Cyclone sucks, Swarm Host (arguably) sucks. Adepts and Immortals are super strong, Lurkers and Ravagers along with buffed Brood Lords and Ultralisks, Liberators and tankivacs, lots of new strong stuff as well.
Expanding is constant, 4 bases being fully saturated by the time your third used to fully kick in back in WOL, and the apm requirements are definitely higher because the game just moves quicker in every sense. Aggression builds are much more viable with 12 worker start, but some builds are just dead, like FFE for a prime example.
It is also more work to play competently, there is shit loads of worker harass and other pushes and builds that can outright win or lose the game for you, so I would say the random frustration level is higher.
That's my opinion on LOTV, whether it's worth it or not idk, I think we all know RTS is just a very small and very passionate group at this point T__T

Yes you need LotV to play the most recent LotV Multiplayer. Every game is standalone now and WoL and HotS are only needed if you want to play the campaigns nowadays.
The sc2 community is maller than during WoL and is neither really growing nor shrinking right now. But don't worry the community is still very active and you will find games as fast as ever in LotV. On the pro side the players have only gotten better and the skill level is higher than ever. Although Mvp is the best to ever touch the gamr right now, players like Zest, Dark, TY, Maru, soO etc. are playing better sc2 than he ever did and someone will surpass him soon I think (although that won't be Life sadly).
Imo LotV is the best version of sc2 yet, but I guess it is a matter of taste. It has only gotten harder since back then. The 12 worker start and the lower amount of resources per base (you mine out faster) have made the game faster and more spread out.
Is it worth it? Yes of course. Maybe a sc2 forum is the wrong place to ask since we are biased, but I'm confident in saying that is is by far the best and active modern RTS out there. I will not say it's better than BW or WC3, but it's a different time and right now LotV is the shit .

LotV is quite a bit of a different beast than HotS or WoL, so I'd probably say that you should play with your friend some more before making a decision. If your friend has LotV then you can enjoy the benefits of multiplayer LotV for free, provided if you're in a party with him. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong!)
From my perspective, right now I like the mechanics of LotV more (starting with 12 workers is really, REALLY nice in my opinion) though I think I liked the "flavor" of HotS more. I should probably preface that I'm not the biggest fan of the tankivac (and I play Terran) so that has influence on my thinking of course. I think LotV has potential to be better than HotS when it comes to "flavor".

Hi decaf.
LotV is very different from WoL. I skipped HotS like you did and returned for lotv. It is a superior game all around though and very much worth it.
