There is some persistent confusion over how placements, MMR, and your standing works. Your initial 5 placement matches will give you a division and league, however your first 20-30 games will have highly varying levels of skill and substantial MMR gains/losses. This is the game adjusting you to where you will best fit. If you feel you were placed at a level lower than you play at - embrace it! Go 3-0. Go 10-0. Watch as your league skyrockets to where you belong.
-----------------------------------------------
These ZvZs against people who main a different race are adorable. I wish they had been sensible and started everyone from a blank slate for races they haven't played but hey. At least it's here. Still it's a little painful for someone who say, mains Protoss, to just lose a lot until their Zerg MMR reaches to the point where they are well matched.
How is it for you guys?

I love the new patch. Had some really lopsided but funny games playing against people trying out different races, and got my ass beat playing terran
It's also good medicine for the balance complaint people. Things aren't as easy as you think from the other side. You can also learn timings and how to abuse other races better by playing that race.
PLUS it's fun to take a break from grinding your primary race to learn something else at a lower level.
tl dr probably the best patch ever, should have happened way way sooner but glad it's here now

I haven't tried it yet - still terrible with my main race.
But I can see your point- I feel like there should be 5 placement matches with each race. I'm a GM/masters toss but my Zerg and Terran must be less than diamond at this point. Wouldn't make sense to start me at masters mmr.
|
I love it! Playing Scarlett and Jimrising in a few PvZs today was a fun experience. I'd always think I'd done a sick job handling a 2-pronged attack only to glance at my main and wonder
"HOW THE SHIT DID 10 roaches and 30 zerglings get in here??"
Getting rekt by players way above me aside. You can tell from the MMR jumps after losses that it adjusts pretty quickly and withing 10 or so games it should be pretty damned accurate

How will it affect your multiple accounts PiG?
Do you think you'll still see as much use out of them?

Same here. I've seen some crazy "It's like an all in, except you don't" kind of builds so far.
I think some people that complain about the state of ultras will not enjoy learning the challenge of surviving until they come out. But all in all it will be a great learning tool for all of us to see when each race is vulnerable, how other players respond as our main race, and improve our play.

I mained with Zerg and got ranked in Master League right after my placement matches... The first time ever in five years! :'-)
And now I won another game and got placed in Master's rank 2 - I definitively don't belong there. I have the feeling that there are either way less people playing or the MMR system is kind of screwed up. I hope I didn't get the Master's badge for nothing, that would be too cruel...

I wish the 'new races' started with 0 MMR. My main is P (d2) and after 5 placements with Zerg I got into d3. I'm not used to different units, mechanics, build orders pretty much anything. I try to copy from what I gathered from pro matches I've seen but that's beyond useless. I'm so out of my element I don't think I belong anywhere higher than gold.
And I've already encountered people in similar situation as mine who immediately quit the game to lower their mmr but that's just inflates my already (too) high zerg mmr.

^Exactly that. In a very long run it will make sense that there is separate MMR for each race. But at the beginning it seems that every race has MMR based on last seasons 1v1. That is so wrong...
In many cases we will have people in Diamond/Master with Gold/Platinum MMR for some races, as it is impossible to be relegated.
I thing that with the start of the next season or with the new Balance Patch, MMR should be completely restarted for separate MMR to have any point.

First I mained placement matches with Terran. Got 4 wins and a signle loss. Ended up with Diamond 1 and about 200 MMR more than I had in the previous season. So that's cool.
Then I did my placement matches as Protoss. I was out of my depth against a Masters Terran and lost both my PvZ (as usual). 2-3 but still Diamond 1. Which is silly, last season I played Protoss on another account and I was struggling to get out of Diamond 3.
Well, I'll try Zerg, too. I expect to get 5 ZvZs, lose them all and go into gold league.

Honestly... I think Blizzard should probably bring back demotions this season, at least for a little while until things settle down a bit.
Lot of people are going to have inflated league compared to the MMR and it will make things really awkard
|
I went 2-3 in my placements as off race protoss but still ended up in diamond 3, I was hoping to start off a little lower than that considering i have very few games overall as protoss, but i'm losing a lot of mmr each time i lose so I don't think it will be an issue at all, just a shiny border :D
How long is this season going to be?
|
Well, huge mmr jumps caused so many players placed in higher leagues and they will remain there since there is no demotion, this season will be very inaccurate but everything will be accurate next season. Obviously everyone is happy overall, its really cool to be able to just jump play a different race when you're bored.

Yeah, but it's just the league border, the mmr will get adjusted and you will be playing opponents of similar skill once you play ~25 games.

I am master with my main race and I guess maybe gold with offrace. I get completely destroyed in all placement matches by masters and diamonds. Still get placed into Dia tier 2. I don't wanna offrace anymore since my mmr for those seem to start where my main race mmr is. Placement for offrace is a joke as it is right now.. I was looking forward playing offrace games but seems like I have to leave like 40 games to go down to the appropriate skill lvl..

You will lose like 80 mmr points a game, it really wont take very long to get competitive matches.

I don't think you can have master level with a race and gold with another unless you never macroed.
How is your MMR going to adjust if you don't play? We get separate MMR per race and people still find a way to complain... So you need to go -40 to adjust your MMR with your new race? So what? This will only happen this season, not the next ones.

Well, I am definitely not diamond with my offracing. I don't understand why it's not just the same way as if you buy a new account. No point in having a bunch of people just leaving games on the ladder to adjust their mmr, I have faced a lot of that as well when I play my main race.

That way it doesn't take as long to adjust your MMR to your real offrace level, except you go down in points instead of up at first. And with your proposition it wouldn't cause instea-leaves but it would give freewins against bronze and silvers so its unfair either way

Maybe so, I'm not too sure it actually is that much faster though, I switched servers recently and It didn't take that long to get into my real mmr. Sometimes I got promoted multiple divisions at a time.
I still think it's awesome that they have implemented separate mmr. It's just not fun to start way to high up, having to either lose a bunch or games in a row or leaving games instantly. The placement matches really have almost no impact on where you get placed. Seem to be mostly you main mmr.

If you go 0-5 in placement thats already a good MMR adjustment :D
Meanwhile i was 75 MMR off getting master random for the first time, and the new season just boosted me to master anyway. Talk about anticlimatic... So now i have to wait until the MMR settles down and for tier boundaries to be changed so i can road to master again... I'm afraid to play before that because i don't wanna lose 80 MMR per game and be 400 MMR away from master by then. Now that's a real dumb issue :D
